En este objetivo ya estamos afianzándonos. De este modo, durante estos meses de verano Vejer se convierte en escenario al aire libre de conciertos de música clásica, festivales de danza, zarzuela, recitales de poesía, etc..

We are already consolidating this objective. In this way, during summer months, Vejer becomes an open air scenery for concerts of classical music, ballet festivals, “zarzuela” (Spanish operetta), poetry reading, etc…

SALUDA ACOVE Estimados lectores, Desde la Asociación de Comerciantes de Vejer de la Frontera (ACOVE) y a través de este escrito quiero expresar la gran suerte que he tenido de nacer en este pueblo tan maravilloso como es Vejer de la Frontera, el cual, con los años está dando pasos agigantados hacia una calidad tanto en la vida cotidiana de sus habitantes como en la de un turismo y economía sostenible sin precedentes.

Siempre queda mejorar en todos los sentidos y no se puede parar. Por ello, desde nuestra asociación junto con el buen hacer de nuestro Ayuntamiento, nos ponemos manos a la obra para que esto se cumpla renovando ideas, proponiendo nuevas, fomentando el consumo local y dando a conocer todo lo que nuestro pueblo tiene todavía por explotar y explorar. Estamos en una situación de proyección cultural, turística y económica inmejorables la cual está al alcance de cualquier visitante o emprendedor.

Aprovecho la ocasión y me dirijo a los socios para agradeceros la confianza y el apoyo recibidos. De igual modo, hago extensible a Ana, el agradecimiento por la oportunidad que me ha brindado para aparecer en estas líneas.

There is always improving in every sense and cannot be stopped.

That is why, from our association, together with the good work of our Town Hall, we start working so that this is achieved, innovating some ideas, creating new ones, encouraging local consumption and announcing everything that our village has yet to be exploited and explored. We are in an excellent situation of cultural, touristic, and economic projection, which is at any visitors or entrepreneur’s reach.

Tienen ante sus ojos, el resultado de un proyecto que requiere de mucho esfuerzo, que se prepara durante todo un año, con mucho tesón y cariño, y que nos llena de orgullo poder sacar a la luz.

You have before your eyes the result of a project that requires a great effort, that is prepared along a year, with lots of perseverance and affection, and that fills us of selfsatisfaction to be able to produce.

Nuestra mayor ilusión es que ustedes, puedan disfrutar y leer la revista, que hablen de ella, la compartan, que se sientan orgullosos de nuestro trabajo y que incluso la coleccionen.

Sus paginas nos muestran diferentes historias relacionadas con Vejer y sus alrededores, de sus gentes y costumbres, de su cultura, de la gastronomía de la zona, todo ello acompañado con unas fotos magistrales que espero les hagan enamorarse de este bellísimo lugar.

Our biggest illusion is that you can enjoy and read the magazine, that you talk about it, that you share it, that you feel proud of our work and that you even collect it.

Its pages show us different stories related to Vejer and its surroundings, its people and traditions, its culture, the gastronomy of the area, all of it accompanied by masterful photographs, that I hope, will make you fall in love with this gorgeous place.

If you know it already, we will help you to discover some places that might surprise you, or if you haven’t been lucky to visit it yet, we reveal historical curiosities such as Hazas de Suerte, the Tower of Mayorazgo, and other many interesting themes, loaded with spectacular images. E

n mis idas y venidas, he tenido la suerte de toparme con Vejer de la Frontera, el lugar donde cualquier humano, joven o adulto soñaría con estar. Y es que no hay un palmo de este maravilloso pueblo que no merezca la pena contemplar. Una continua sucesión de postales, de lienzos, de obras de arte...

No sé muy bien si será su luz; sus románticas calles empedradas, sus atardeceres; sus gentes, amables y auténticas; sus macetas llenas de flores, sus coloridos talleres de artesanía; sus monumentos; su imponente altura, sus magnificas vistas, más allá en la cima de la vieja peña, o su mar, su inmenso y maravilloso mar, con esa playa de dorada arena... No sé qué será..., pero Vejer es especial; único; irrepetible (e irresistible).

A mí, déjenme que les confiese, que me ha conquistado.

Regocíjense con las fotografías que aparecen a continuación, espero sean capaces de deslumbrarles, fascinarles con sus diferentes ángulos; y despertarles las ganas de conocer mejor este bendito cerro, antiguamente llamado cerro de las maldades.

Que resulta incomparable.

I

n my comings and goings, I have been lucky to run across Vejer de la Frontera, the place where any human, young or adult would dream of being. And it is that there isn’t an inch of this wonderful village that doesn’t deserve being contemplated. A continuous succession of post-cards, paintings, works of art….

I don’t know very well if it will be its light, its romantic cobblestoned streets, its twilights, its people, kind and authentic, its clay pots full of flowers, its colourful craft workshops, its monuments, its impressive height, its magnificent views, further than the summit of the Peña Vieja, or its sea, its immense and marvelous sea, with that golden sanded beach…I don’t know what it will be… but Vejer is special, unique, unrepeatable (and irresistible). Let me confess, that it has captivated me.

Be delighted with the photographs that follow, I hope that they will be able to leave you speechless, fascinate you with their different angles, and awaken your desire to know better this blessed hill, formerly called malice hill.

It becomes incomparable.

UN AÑO MÁS VEJER BRILLÓ BAJO LA LUZ DE LAS VELAS

esde las delegaciones de Turismo y cultura del Ayuntamiento se ha organizado por tercer año consecutivo una noche de velas en Vejer, en la que se pudo disfrutar de una velada, iluminada tan solo por la luz de las velas, en algunas de las calles del casco histórico.

El ambiente estuvo amenizado por música clásica, en cada uno de los rincones que entraban dentro del recorrido perfilado por la iluminación de las velas.

ONE MORE YEAR VEJER SHINED UNDER THE LIGHT OF THE CANDLES.

F

rom Tourism and Culture Delegations of the Town hall, it has been organised for the third consecutive year a candles’ night in Vejer, in which everybody could enjoy a soirée illuminated just by the light of the candles, in some of the streets of the old quarters.

The atmosphere was liven up by classical music, in every one of the corners that were inside the itinerary sketched out by the candles light.

Tras la realización del concierto el pasado año de un piano y 200 velas, en la que la Plaza de España, que destacó como un escenario impresionante, el ayuntamiento pensó que sería espectacular llevar esta idea a distintos rincones del casco histórico, y que por unas horas Vejer resaltará su belleza a las luz de las velas y bajo la solemnidad que sus calles desprenden. ¡Una noche aun más mágica, fuera de lo normal!

After the piano concert last year and 200 candles, in which Plaza de EspaĂąa stood out as an impressive scenery, the town Hall thought that it would be spectacular to take this idea to different corners of the old quarters, and that for some hours Vejer will emphasize its beauty under the light of the candles and under the solemnity that its streets give off.

ste festival nace de la iniciativa de tres amigos, un músico y dos publicistas, enamorados de la música y de su tierra, que soñaban con poder unir sus dos grandes pasiones.

Un sueño que deciden hacer realidad en marzo de 2015.

Imaginan el proyecto, lo plasman en papel y empiezan a contarlo a todo el que les quiere escuchar: administraciones, marcas, músicos y profesionales del sector. Las reacciones positivas les hace ver que su sueño no sólo es posible, sino también necesario.

his festival was born from three friend’s initiative, a musician and two publicists, in love with music and their land, who dreamt of being able to connect their two great passions.

A dream that they decide to make a reality in March 2015. They imagine the project, they express it in paper and start telling it to anyone who wants to listen to it: administrations, brands, musicians and professionals of the sector. The positive reactions make them see that their dream is not only possible but also necessary.

Así es como Jazz Vejer empezó a coger forma, con el objetivo principal de vivir la música en un entorno maravilloso, uniendo a artistas de la tierra con artistas internacionales, noveles con consagrados y acompañarlo de todo lo que la mágica comarca de La Janda y la provincia de Cádiz ofrece: historia, naturaleza, playas, gastronomía y sus gentes.

This way is how Jazz Vejer started to take shape, with the main object to live music in a marvellous environment, connecting artists of the area with international ones, new artists with renowned ones and accompanying it with everything that the magical area of La Janda and the province of Cadiz offer: history, nature, beaches, gastronomy and their people.

a Cervecería abre sus puertas en la entrada de Vejer , ubicado en la Avda. Los Remedios numero 5, antes de la Corredera.

Un lugar nuevo, muy recomendable donde se unen la tradición popular del papelón de pescaito frito y el mejor marisco.

Saborea sus gambas, langostinos, patas rusas, pulpo a la brasa, sus pescados… ummmmmm!! … hacen que tu paladar sienta el verdadero sabor del producto fresco y de excelente calidad.

A tenor de esta industria es como el Atún ha formado parte de nuestra Historia reciente, si entendemos como tal el periodo que abarca desde que éramos fenicios hasta la actualidad. n

Thanks to this industry Tuna fish has formed part of our contemporary History, if we understand it as the period that comes from when we were Phoenicians to the present. n

Pero dos o tres mil años no es mucho tiempo en la historia de este animal venerado. El fue el dueño de los mares y reiteraba su ciclo migratorio muchos miles de años antes de que el ser humano habitara estas costas.

Sabemos que en aquel entonces lo hacía ocupando el litoral libre y a su antojo. La riqueza marina de antaño propiciaba que hasta la orilla del mar llegara todo tipo de pescados.

No existía la presión humana que respondería a una necesidad.

We know that at that time they did so taking up the unoccupied litoral and as they pleased. The former marine wealth caused that all kind of sh reached the seashore.

No human pressure for such an urgent necessity as to be nourished existed. And the fauna of the Earth had not started to adapt its uses and behaviour to that new predator yet, which was cleverer than anyone they had known until that moment.

Se creó un modus vivendi y un sistema de relaciones entre las fuerzas productivas que ha permanecido durante siglos. Pues a pesar de las modificaciones lógicas que se han de dar al pasar las páginas de la Historia, la Almadraba ha mantenido una base laboral ancestral que ha dotado a nuestras costas de un componente cultural diferenciador entre los pueblos marineros; nos ha otorgado una identidad indudable y ha ayudado a que se transmitieran mensajes como el respeto y la admiración al medio marino, la comprensión de la lógica de las pérdidas y las ganancias cuando se trata de asumir las bondades caprichosas del mar, y también a entender la Almadraba como una industria solidaria.

From that meeting, it is not only that human beings and tuna fish had started a narrow and accurate relationship, by which the first one got to know a way of life and production based on the knowledge of the other and the maintenance and improvement of such a peculiar device as the Almadraba; but it also provided with a unique anthropological contribution defined by the relationship among those tuna fishermen.

A modus vivendi and a relationship system among the production forces was set up, which has remained for centuries. Even though the logical changes that must take place to go through the pages of History, the Almadraba has kept an ancestral labor basis which has provided our coastlines with a distinguishing cultural component among the sailor villages; it has given us a doubtless identity and it has helped us transmit messages such as respect and admiration for the marine environment, the understanding of profit and loss’ logic when one must assume the capricious kindness of the sea, and also understand the Almadraba as a solidary industry.

CALABAZA ROTEÑA: Autóctona de la villa de Rota, aunque su cultivo se ha exten- dido a toda la provincia. Se diferencia de otras variedades de calabaza por su apariencia ex- terna, de color verde oscuro y muy verrugosa, con interior amarillo. Se come cuando aún está verde, guisada con judías verdes.

CARDO O CARDILLO: Re ere a la planta cuyo fruto es la alcachofa o alcaucil, es decir, la alcachofera, popularmente llamada mata de cardo. Dándose el nombre de cardillo o cardo a los tallos de dicha mata.

ACELGA Y ACELGA BRAVÍA: Plantas comestibles de hojas grandes, anchas, lisas y jugosas, cuyo pedúnculo -denominado penca- es grueso y acanalado por el interior.

Las acelgas bravías, también llamadas acelgones, tienen una apariencia parecida a las espinacas, son silvestres y crecen en toda la costa andaluza. Las acelgas, por su parte, son la versión domesticada, de la huerta.

ALCACHOFA Y ALCAUCIL: Las alcachofas son conocidas en la comarca como alcauciles romanos o picúos, precisamente porque su característica más destacada es que las hojas terminan en punta. Mientras que el término alcaucil, a secas, re ere a un tipo de alcachofa autóctona, con hojas redondeadas y de color claro.

AZOFAIFA: Azufaifa. Fruto del azufaifo, carnoso pero con semilla leñosa, de color encarnado por fuera y amarillo por dentro, dulce y comestible.

CHÍCHARO: Nombre que reciben los guisantes en toda la comarca y la práctica totalidad de la provincia.

CHUMBO: Higo chumbo. Fruto de la higuera de Indias, más conocida en la zona como chumbera o tuna. De color verde amarillento, espinoso, y pulpa comestible.

HABICHUELAS VERDES Y PÍAS: Habichuelas verdes es el nombre dado en la zona a las judías verdes, de forma cilíndrica y alargada. Las habichuelas pías son una variedad de habichuelas verdes autóctona de la comarca y prácticamente desaparecida, a excepción de algunas huertas en las que se continúa cultivando para el gasto de la casa.

Son planas, más tiernas que las verdes y de color claro con manchas oscuras, de las que toma el nombre de pías.

BERENJENA PÍA: Variedad comarcal de berenjena, de piel clara con pintas o manchas rojizas, y sabor muy diferente al de la berenjena negra.

BONIATO: También llamados batatas o patatas dulces. Se trata de un tubérculo que suele comerse asado o cocido. De sa- bor muy dulce cuando se cocina, adquiere mayor dulzor cuanto más lenta y larga sea la cocción. Los hay blancos y rojos, el color re ere al interior y no a la piel del exterior. Por lo general, el rojo se consume como postre mientras que el blanco se incorpora al potaje.

CABRILLAS Y CARACOLES: Moluscos gasterópodos terrestres, comestibles, de concha en espiral. Ambas especies son similares, diferenciándose principalmente en tamaño y color, más grande y de concha más oscura en el caso de las cabrillas. También di ere el lugar de recolección, pues mien- tras que las cabrillas se encuentran en los cultivos de secano, el caracol pre ere zonas más húmedas y umbrías.

PALMITOS Y PALMICHAS: El palmito es una planta de la familia de las palmas. Se dice de él que es la palmera andaluza. Tiene tronco subterráneo o apenas saliente, hojas en forma de abanico, ores amarillas y fruto rojizo, elipsoidal, comestible y con hueso muy duro, que es conocido como palmicha.

PUERRO Y AJOPORRO: Planta herbácea con hojas planas, largas y estrechas, y ores de color blanco rojizo, cuyo bulbo alargado es comestible. El ajoporro es la versión silvestre de esta planta, con hojas semicilíndricas, ores encarnadas y un cierto olor y sabor a ajo. También recibe el nombre de ajete.

TAGARNINA: Planta herbácea silvestre, comestible. Crece a ras de suelo en herbazales, márgenes de caminos, ejidos, etc. Tiene forma de estrella y hojas rizadas y espinosas.

TAPÍN: Es el nombre que reciben en la zona los calabacines, una variedad de calabaza de pequeño tamaño, forma cilíndrica alargada y carne blanca cubierta por una piel verde. En cambio, se conoce como calabacín a otra va- riedad de calabaza con forma de pera.

HIGOS Y BREVAS: La breva es el primer fruto de la higuera, de color oscuro, nace a principios de verano. El higo es el segundo fruto de la misma planta, de piel verde y menor tamaño que el anterior. Higos y brevas son las frutas autóctonas de verano en la comarca, mientras que las naranjas son las de invierno, pues la presencia casi constante del viento de levante en la zona impide mayor productividad de los frutales.

LIMÓN LUNERO: Los limones luneros, o lunarios, tienen la peculiaridad de orecer con cada nueva luna por lo cual dan limones durante todo el año. Son muy comunes

TOMATES DE PRIMOR: Reciben el apelativo de primor porque tanto la extensión media de los terrenos de cultivo (entre 1 Ha. y 1.5 Ha.), como el propio proceso de trabajo (totalmente manual, sin maquinaria) permite que los agricultores les dediquen gran cuidado y cariño.

TRIGUERO: Espárrago triguero. Yema o brote de la esparraguera, de tallo recto y cabezuela comestible, de color verde. Es silvestre y brota sobre todo en los sembrados de trigo, de donde toma el nombre.

ZANAHORIA MORADA: Autóctona de la provincia. Sus hojas son más grandes que las de la zanahoria de Nantes, la raíz termina en punta y es de color morado.

INGREDIENTES: Aceite de oliva virgen extra, cinco o seis dientes de ajo, cinco o seis tomates maduros en el caso de que no se encuentren buenos tomates, se puede utilizar una lata de tomate natural-, un par de cucharadas de azúcar, dos o tres pimientos verdes y algo más de un cuarto de kilo de mojama cortada en daditos.

PROCESO DE ELABORACIoN ANTIESTReS: Una vez que hemos decidido que estas vacaciones de Semana Santa las vamos a gastar –yo diría “requetegastar”- en disfrutar del entorno y gozar un poco más de la naturaleza, procederemos a la elección de los parajes que nos ofrece la costa Atlántico gaditana.

Estos parajes son tan variados ecológicamente como vírgenes, paradisíacos, salvajes y ricos en yacimientos arqueológicos. Así que después de un paseo por las dunas de Bolonia, haremos una visita a la ciudad romana de Baelo Claudia.

Allí podemos imaginarnos que estamos en una terma o asistiendo a la representación teatral de Electra, la obra escrita por Sófocles. Otra opción es pasear por el parque natural de la Breña de Barbate, incluiremos una visita a la ermita visigoda de san Ambrosio, y nos imaginaremos la ceremonia donde Leovigildo y Recaredo se convirtieron al cristianismo.

Un paseo por la orilla de la playa, desde el cabo Trafalgar hasta la playa del Palmar, es otra de las posibilidades. Durante el paseo, ordenaremos el guión de nuestra particular película de la batalla de Trafalgar. También podemos visitar Medina Sidonia y situarnos en el punto geodésico que está junto a la catedral de Santa María Coronada. Desde allí, disfrutaremos de la misma sensación de libertad que la protagonista de la película “Titanic”, cuando abre los brazos al mundo desde la proa del barco. Comprenderemos a Ícaro y su tenaz idea de volar. Desde este punto se ve casi toda la costa atlántica y gran parte de la serranía gaditana. Un lujo al alcance de cualquiera que sepa elegir un día claro, como

estoy seguro que hicieron los geógrafos Ibn Batuta o Tolomeo para dibujar sus mapas.

Para este plato, es conveniente adquirir los trozos de mojama de los extremos. En primer lugar, porque son más económicos y, en segundo, porque son de la misma calidad. La mojama extra finamente cortada y las huevas secas las dejaremos para el aperitivo. Trocearemos en daditos la mojama y la dejaremos en agua antes de salir de excursión. Una vez que tenemos el

De postre, no es mala idea dejarse abrazar por Morfeo y entregarse a un nuevo sueño. Esta vez dejaremos que nuestro subconsciente decida el argumento.

We will keep the extra thin cut salted tuna and the dried spawns for the aperitif.

We will cut the salted tuna in cubes and put it in water before leaving for the excursion. Once we have browned the garlic and perfumed the oil, we will add the tomato, with a bit of sugar to take away acidity, the peppers and we will wait till everything gets fried.

We will add the cubes of salted tuna at the same time that we rectify the amount of salt.

PROCESS OF ANTI-STRESS ELABORATION: Once we have decided that we are going to spend this Easter holiday – I would say “Requetegastar” (spend in extreme)- enjoying the environment and enjoying a little bit more of nature, we will proceed to choose the locations that the Atlantic coast of Cadiz offers us.

These landscapes are so ecologically varied as virgin and paradisiacal, wild, and rich in archaeological remains. So, after a walk along Bolonia sand dunes, we will come for a visit to the roman city of Baelo Claudia. There we will be able to imagine that we are in a thermal bath or attending a theatre performance of Electra, the play

by Sofocles. Another option is going for a walk in the natural park of La Breña in Barbate, including a visit to the visigothic hermitage of Saint Ambrosio, and we will imagine the ceremony where Leovigildo and Recaredo converted into Christianism.

A walk along the seashore from Trafalgar Cape to the El Palmar beach, is another possibility. During the stroll, we will order the script of our own film of Trafalgar Battle. We will also be able to visit Medina Sidonia and place ourselves in a geodesic vertex that is

Quien no ha ido paseando por la orilla de la playa y no se ha agachado a coger una orejita que sobresale de la arena, como diciendo, cógeme soy para ti.

Who has not gone for a walk along the seashore and has not bent down to pick up an “orejita” that comes out the sand, as saying “Pick me up, I’m for you”?

Es un deporte local, ya que son muchos los adeptos a practicar esta búsqueda incansable. Es todo empezar, una vez que comienzas a verlas, no puedes parar… de buscarlas!

It is a local sport, since there are many people who practice this tireless hunt. It is just starting, and once you begin to see them, you cannot stop…searching for them!

Son unos magníficos tesoros que nos ofrece la mar, bien sirven para decorar botellas, garrafas, peceras, etc , como para usarlas en pendientes, engarzadas en oro, plata, cuero… decoran carteras y hasta se hacen pulseras.

They are magnificent treasures that the sea offers us, well they are useful to decorate bottles, jugs, fish tanks, etc., as to use them as earrings, set in gold, silver or leather… they decorate wallets and they even make bracelets.

Para los cristianos protege del mal de ojo, atrae la suerte y la prosperidad. En otras culturas es conocida como “El Ojo de Shiva” o el tercer ojo el que nos permite ver mas allá de lo evidente, una mirada nueva en momentos de oscuridad.

For Christians they protect against evil eye, attract luck and prosperity. In other cultures, they are known as “Shiva’s eye” or the third eye that allows us to see further than the evidence, a new sight in darkness moments.

¿Y ustedes se preguntaran, que son en realidad?

Pues son los opérculos, las puertas de unas caracolas, que ellas mismas se encargan de fabricar y según el tamaño de la caracola, así es el de la orejita, las hay minúsculas hasta bien grandes.

Cuando las caracolas se desprenden de ellas son arrastradas a la orilla.

La caracola a la que pertenecen se llama Astraea rugosa o Bolma rugosa.

Si hasta ahora no se habían fijado en ellas, no dejen de mirar a la arena cuando vayan por la playa y sin duda las verán.

They are the operculums, the lids of the seashells, that they fabricate themselves and depending on their size, it is the orejita’s, they are tiny and quite big. When the seashells get rid of them, they are swept along to the seashore.

The seashell to which they belong to is called Astraea or Bolma rugosa.

If you haven’t paid attention to them up to now, don’t stop looking at the sand when you go by the beach and you will see them definitely.

The Municipal Museum of Traditions and Customs of Vejer, located in the Monjas Concepcionistas Convent (16th century), holds an expositive show of our most recent history. The visitor will be able to notice the way of life of the last century people from Vejer through a collection of tools and essentials related to the labours in the country and ancient professions.

He will also be able to know the rooted and unequalled customs such as the “cobijada” (typical dress of Vejer for women which consists of a cape that covers from head to toes) or the craftwork and get close to the origin of “Hazas de suerte” (Plots of fortune), the evolution of the old hay huts or get to know the atmosphere that was lived during the pig slaughtering season.

The attendance of public to the museum and the nice opinions become bigger considerably along the time. A great interest visit to Vejer of the epoch.

VEJER HERMANADO CON LA REPÚBLICA DOMINICANA

E

l busto de Juan Pablo Duarte (Santo Domingo, La Española, 1813 - Caracas, Venezuela, 1876), fundador de la República Dominicana, esta instalado en Vejer, concretamente en una zona cercana a la calle República Dominicana, a la altura de la Avenida de Andalucía. Ya que Juan Pablo Duarte fue hijo de Juan José Duarte, vejeriego que emigró a las Indias en busca de mejoras económicas y sociales a través del comercio entre ambos continentes. De hecho, el busto se trasladó desde estas islas hasta Vejer en barco.

Hace ya unos años fue el bicentenario de la conmemoración del nacimiento de la fundación de la sociedad secreta ‘La Trinitaria’, un 16 de julio pero de 1838, y el objetivo de esta sociedad no era otro que lograr la independencia ante la ocupación haitiana. Y es que Juan Pablo Duarte, libertador dominicano, nació en una época especialmente convulsa de la historia de la isla, ya que en esos momentos la soberanía sobre la misma cambiaba frecuentemente de manos entre España y Francia.

En 1822 la isla pasó a ser completamente posesión de Haití, que logró así unificar todo el territorio.

Se convirtió en el líder de la Trinitaria, una sociedad secreta de ideas independentistas.

Se le reconoce como Padre de la Patria junto a Francisco del rosario Sánchez y a Ramón Matías Mella.

Ha día de hoy existe un hermanamiento con la ciudad dominicana de Moca.

Juan José Duarte, fue vejeriego tal y como descubrió en 1933 el erudito dominicano Emilio Tejera, quien puso fin a todas las conjeturas sobre el árbol genealógico de uno de los fundadores de su Patria.

VEJER TWINED WITH DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

T

he bust of Juan Pablo Duarte (Santo Domingo, La Española, 1813 - Caracas, Venezuela, 1876), founder of Dominican Republic, is located in Vejer, in particular at the height of Avenida Andalucia. Since Juan Pablo Duarte was the son of Juan Jose Duarte from Vejer who emigrated to the Indies searching for economic and social improvement through the trade between both continents. In fact, the bust was moved from those islands to Vejer by ship.

Some years ago it was the bicentenary of the commemoration of the birth of the foundation of the secret society “La Trinitaria”, on 16th July but in 1838, and its purpose was no other than to get the independence of the Haitian occupation. And it is that Juan Pablo Duarte, Dominican liberator, was born in an especially tumultuous period of the island’s history, since at that moment the sovereignty over it changed frequently from Spain to France. In 1822 the island was property completely of Haiti, that way it was able to unify the territory. He became the leader of the Trinitaria, a secret society with pro-independence ideas.

He is known as the Father of the homeland together with Francisco del Rosario Sanchez and Ramon Matias Mella.

Nowadays it is twined with the Dominican city of Moca.

Juan Jose Duarte was from Vejer, as the Dominican expert Emilio Tejera discovered, who set for an end to the conjectures about the family tree of one of the founders of its homeland.

ARTE VEJER EN LA CALLE

L

a intención de Arte Vejer es continuar promocionando la cultura y la expresión artística existente en el municipio. Para ello la Asociación Cultural tiene preparado un interesante programa de actos que irán desarrollando a los largo de los meses.

Se llevo a cabo una exposición andante en la que numerosas personas salieron a la calle a mostrar su arte en diferentes facetas: pintura, música, danza y fotografía a través de un recorrido que partió de la Plazuela siguiendo por Puerta de la Segur, Corredera, hasta la Plaza San Francisco.

Una interesante actividad que contó con gran cantidad de público que asombrado e ilusionado por el evento se iba incorporando al recorrido.

VEJER’S ART IN THE STREET

T

he intention of Vejer’s Art is to continue promoting the culture and the artistic expression existing in the township.

For that reason, the Cultural Association has prepared an interesting programme of acts that will develop to over the months.

A walking exhibition was held in which many people got out in the street to show their art in different facets: painting, music, dance, and photography, along an itinerary that started in the Plazuela, following by Puerta de la Segur, Corredera, up to Plaza de San Francisco.

An interesting activity that counted on a big amount of public that, amazed and excited because of the event, was joining up the tour.

FERIA DE LA PRIMAVERA

C

omo cada año Vejer celebra su Feria de Primavera, ubicada en el Recinto Ferial “La Noria”.

Comienza por la noche con lºa inauguración oficial del alumbrado extraordinario a cargo de las Autoridades Locales, Las Cobijadas Mayor y de Honor y los Presidentes de peñas y asociaciones.

Cada año un representante de una asociación del municipio acompaña al Alcalde para accionar el botón del encendido del alumbrado. Este año el honor fue para la asociación de comerciantes ACOVE. Acudimos a la feria ganadera, que este año cumplió su XXX edición, organizada por la delegación Municipal de Agricultura y Ganadería.

El viernes, fiesta local en Vejer, se celebró en la feria el Día de la Mujer en la Caseta Municipal con varias actuaciones y degustación de manzanilla. El año que viene no se lo pueden perder!.

SPRING FAIR. WOMEN`S DAY

s every year, Vejer celebrates its Spring Fair, located in “La Noria” Fairgrounds.

It begins by night with the official opening of the extraordinary lights by the Local Authorities, the “Cobijadas Mayor y de Honor” (women covered with a black cape as in the ancient times, which today is the typical costume of Vejer), the Presidents of the clubs and associations.

Every year a representative from an association of the township accompanies the Major to turn on the button that switches on the lights- This year the honour went to ACOVE, the business association.

We went to the livestock fair, this year it was its 30th edition, organised by the Provincial Delegation of Agriculture and Ranching.

On Friday, local holiday in Vejer, The Women’s Day was celebrated in the Municipal Stand with several performances, and a tasting of manzanilla wine. Next year you cannot miss it!

En el Pabellón de la Provincia de Cádiz, se presentó, y dio a degustar, la marca de calidad Ternera de la Janda, a cargo del Alcalde, José Ortiz, el Concejal de Agricultura y Ganadería, Miguel Ángel Peña y una representación de carniceros y ganaderos locales, que son los que más conocen el tema.

Para promocionar la oferta vejeriega se ha editado Vejer Magazine, la revista de Vejer, y estamos encantados de poder participar en promocionar este pueblo que destaca por su encanto natural, su amplia y variada oferta turística y cultural y su gastronomía, basada en productos de la tierra y del mar.

ejer has been the protagonist in the International Fair of Tourism, that is celebrated in Madrid in Winter. In the Pavilion of the Province of Cadiz, it was presented and it gave to taste the quality brand of Veal from La Janda, in charge of the Major, José Ortiz, the Farming Town Councillor, Miguel Angel Peña and a representative group of local farmers, who are the ones that know more about the subject.

Later on, an exquisite tasting of stuffed veal and cake of veal could be enjoyed; the later one was live cooked by the chef Jesus Recio, owner of the restaurant Valvatida, located in the historic quarter of Vejer.

The tasting was accompanied by ecologic beer Besaro, made also in the township with water from Santa Lucia natural spring.

Vejer is present in this important International Fair of Tourism, confirming its tourist destination as an excellency point of reference in the province of Cadiz, in which one can enjoy nature, monuments, culture and wonderful gastronomy.

To promote Vejer’s offer, Vejer Magazine has been published, and we are pleased to participate in the promotion of this town, that stands out because of its natural charm, its wide and varied tourist and cultural offer and its gastronomy, based on products from the land and the sea.

LAS CLOACAS DE MEDINA SIDONIA

M

edina Sidonia es la capital de la comarca gaditana de La Janda.

Dista 28 Km. del pueblo de Vejer. Guarda en su interior secretos ocultos y joyas de enorme valor. Si estáis en la ciudad podéis acercaros y descubrir su pasado romano.

En el Cerro del Castillo, los fenicios levantaron una población bajo el nombre de su capital natal, Sidón. En el transcurso de las guerras púnicas, en el siglo III a.C., los romanos conquistaron los terrenos peninsulares que estaban en manos de los cartagineses, levantando un castellum sobre el mismo Cerro del Castillo. En torno al siglo I a.C. levantan una nueva ciudad romana, a la que Augusto concedió el estatus de colonia con derecho romano, denominándose Assido Caesarina Augusta. Fue una de las villas mas importantes del sur de la península. De aquellos tiempos forman parte lo que les contamos a continuación.

El conjunto arqueológico romano alberga restos de viviendas, una calle pavimentada y la cloaca que discurre por debajo de la misma, los sótanos de una gran edificación formada por bóvedas monumentales y otros dos tramos de cloacas, cuyas dimensiones permiten la visita del público. Medina Sidonia conserva 20 m. de galerías subterráneas cuya función sería la de alcantarillado durante la época romana. Estas construcciones hidráulicas, del siglo I d.C., muestran el alto grado de urbanización alcanzado por la Assido Caesarina.

Sus muros estaban hechos de sillares de piedra arenisca y las bóvedas son de medio cañón corrido. El suelo es lo mas llamativo ya que es el original de la antigua Assido , estaba impermeabilizado por una capa formada por una mezcla de cerámica triturada y cal. Fijaros en los registros circulares que hay en las bóvedas, y que conectaban las cloacas con las distintas casas de la ciudad. Sobre todo este conjunto arquitectónico está ubicado el Museo Arqueológico de Medina Sidonia.

Por ello Medina Sidonia tal vez sea una de las ciudades mas históricas de Andalucía. Han pasado por ella fenicios, romanos, musulmanes y cristianos...

Este conjunto arqueológico romano nos detalla la enorme importancia de la ciudad en el siglo I. Fueron descubiertas en 1969, aunque hasta 1991 no se acondicionaron para ser visitadas.

Y hoy en día, respetando el lugar para que perdure muchos años más, todos las podemos visitar y disfrutar.

THE SEWERS OF MEDINA SIDONIA

M

edina Sidonia is the capital city of the Cadiz area, La Janda. It is 28 km far from the village of Vejer.

In its interior it keeps hidden secrets and great value jewellery. If you are in the city, you can come and discover its Roman past.

In the castle of El Cerro, the Phoenicians built a city under its capital city native name: Sidon. During the Punic Wars, in the 3rd century b.C, the Romans conquered the Peninsula areas that were under Carthaginian control, building a castellum on the very same Cerro del Castillo. Around 1st century b.C they erected a new Roman city, to which Augustus granted the status of colony with Roman rights, calling it Assido Caesarina Augusta. It was one of the most important villas in the South Peninsula. From those times the following we explain you about formed part of.

Nowadays a part of the urban network of the city can be visited.

The Roman archaeological group holds rest of the houses, a paved street, and a sewer that goes under the same one, the basement of a great building formed by monumental vaults and a couple of other two sections of sewers, whose dimensions allow the visit of the public. Medina Sidonia preserves 20 meters of subterranean galleries whose function would be as sewage system during the Roman times.

These hydraulic constructions from the first century a. C, show us a grade of urbanisation reached by Assido Caesarina. Its walls were made of sandstone blocks and the vaults are medium barrelled. The floor is the most remarkable, since it is the original one of the ancient Assido, it was impermeable by a layer made of crushed ceramic and lime. Have a look at the circular marks on the vaults and that connected the sewers with the different houses of the city. Mainly all this architectonic group that is located in the Archaeology Museum of Medina Sidonia.

For this reason Medina Sidonia is perhaps one of the most historical cities of Andalusia. Phoenicians, Romans, Muslims, Christians..... have passed by it.

These archaeological Roman remains tell us in detail the great importance of the city in the 1st century. They were discovered in 1969, although they were not set up for their visit till 1991.

And at the moment we are be able to visit and enjoy them if we respect the place so that it lasts for many years.

En su planta baja es una dependencia abovedada con saeteras, y de ella por una escalerilla tortuosa de piedra se sube al adarve y de allí al cielo o techo almenado. Posee, sobre dos almenas, una espadaña, respondiendo a la capilla que a la casa del Mayorazgo contigua poseía.

TORRE DEL RECINTO DEFENSIVO DE SANCHO IV.

Esta Casa del Mayorazgo de estilo barroco, data del siglo XVIII, es una casona solariega y ocupa toda la superficie comprendida en esta esquina de la fortaleza. La construyó Sancho IV en Vejer.

Su interior con dos patios está alterado por las obras realizadas. Su fachada es barroca de piedra tallada. Desde el adarve se divisa perfectamente la Plaza de España (llamada Plaza de los pescaitos).

Al ser actualmente una casa en la que viven varias familias de vecinos, se puede visitar en horas prudentes para no molestarles, y siempre pidiendo permiso. No cobran entrada, aunque se puede dejar un donativo en el buzón instalado en el patio principal, para contribuir con el mantenimiento de los patios y de la Torre.

TOWER OF MAYORAZGO

I

t is one of the towers of the walled enclosure, located in its southern part. Its name is due to its location in the “Casa del Mayorazgo” (House of the primogeniture). The tower forms a corner standing out the line of the wall.

Its fist floor is a vaulted room with loopholes, from which one climbs a tortuous stone stair up to the bailey of the wall and from there to the sky or crenellated roof. It has a bell gable on two crenels, responding to the chapel that the adjacent house of Mayorazgo has got.

TOWER OF THE DEFENCE ENCLOSURE OF SANCHO IV. (13TH -14TH CENTURIES)

This baroque style Casa del Mayorazgo, from the 18th century, is an ancestral house and occupies the whole space included in this corner of the fortress. It was built by Sancho IV in Vejer. Its interior with two patios has been modified by the works made. Its baroque façade is made of curved stone. From the bailey one can distinguish perfectly the Plaza de España (called the “pescaitos” square).

Since it is a house where several neighbour families live, it can be visited only at prudent hours so that they are not disturbed, and asking always for permission. They do not charge for a fee, although one can leave a tip in the box placed in the main patio, to contribute to the maintenance of the patios and the tower.

LAS HAZAS DE LA SUERTE

E

n dos municipios de Cádiz –Vejer de la Frontera y Barbate– pervive una tradición jurídico-histórica que se remonta a los tiempos de la Reconquista, cuando el curso del río Barbate trazaba la frontera que separaba la Corona de Castilla y León de los territorios bajo control musulmán. Entonces, se concedió a esta tierra una Carta Puebla que recogía cuáles eran sus derechos y privilegios; mejores y mayores que otras similares porque los monarcas cristianos trataron de incentivar la repoblación de esta estratégica comarca gaditana.

Aquel fue el origen medieval –se dice que en la segunda mitad del siglo XIII– de una figura que, hoy en día, se regula por un Reglamento para el aprovechamiento de los bienes municipales denominados Hazas de Suerte del Común de Vecinos de Vejer de la Frontera.

comunal en España, y en particular en Andalucía, cuyo usufructo recae, como su nombre indica, por sorteo cada año bisiesto a favor de los vecinos incluidos, desde una determinada antigüedad, en el padrón de habitantes de los municipios de Vejer y Barbate.

Si bien la explotación agropecuaria de los terrenos y fincas adscritos corren a cargo de un censo de colonos que, a la postre, ceden una parte de los beneficios de la explotación a los beneficiarios de los sorteos, agrupados en unidades familiares.

Tales beneficiarios no pueden ser incluidos nuevamente en el sorteo mientras los restantes no hayan sido agraciados con dicha suerte.

El gobierno y gestión de las hazas recae en una junta vinculada orgánica y funcionalmente al propio municipio, si bien las diferencias relativas a la interpretación y aplicación de los reglamentos han de ser dirimidas, en caso de persistir conflicto, por la jurisdicción ordinaria.

Los límites de los territorios adscritos no coinciden con los de los términos municipales al ser éstos posteriores, dándose el caso de incluir terrenos pertenecientes al término de Medina, o que Barbate administre hazas ubicadas en el de Vejer de la Frontera.

Esta institución data del siglo XIV y ya desde ese momento, con motivo de la pretensión de los duques de Medina Sidonia de incluir tales propiedades comunales en su propia jurisdicción, se suscitaron controversias que fueron resueltas por la Cancillería de Granada, siendo el valedor de los intereses de los vecinos de Vejer el insigne Juan Relinque; Rivas de Neira y Cobarrubias fueron los magistrados que fallaron a favor del mantenimiento de dicho sistema.

Todos ellos tienen dedicadas sendas calles en Vejer con sus respectivas ilustraciones para general conocimiento.

I

n two municipalities of Cadiz, –Vejer de la Frontera and Barbate– a legal-historic tradition lives on, that goes back to the times of the Reconquest, when the course of the river Barbate established the border that separated the Kingdom of Castile and Leon from the lands under Moslem control.

Then, this land was granted with a “Carta Puebla” (Town Charter), that gathered up which ones were its rights and privileges; better and bigger than other similar ones because the Christian monarchs tried to stimulate the repopulation of this strategic area of Cadiz.

That was the medieval origin – it is said that in the second half of the 13th century – from a figure that, nowadays, it is regularised

by Regulations for the use of the municipal state called “Hazas de suerte (Plots of Luck) of the neighbours’ common system of Vejer de la Frontera” The hazas de suerte are the only expression of the common property in Spain, and in particular in Andalusia, whose usufruct passes to, as its name indicates, by a raffle every leap year in favour of the neighbours included, from a certain age, in the register of inhabitants of the municipalities of Vejer and Barbate.

Although the farming exploitation of the lands and connected estates run by some census settlers, that eventually, give a part of the benefit of the exploitation to the beneficiaries of the raffles, grouped into family units.

Such beneficiaries cannot be included again in the raffle, while the rest have not been blessed with such luck.

The government and management of the hazas fall on a board, organic and functionally linked to the municipality itself, whilst the differences regarding the interpretation and application of the regulations must be resolved, in case the conflict carries on, by the ordinary jurisdiction.

The limits of the connected lands do not coincide with the municipal territories’ ones since these were later, that being the case that lands belonging to Medina are included, or that Barbate manages hazas located in the ones of Vejer de la Frontera.

This institution comes from the 14th century and from that very moment, due to the ambition of Medina Sidonia dukes to include such common properties in their own jurisdiction, controversies appeared that were solved by the chancellor’s office of Granada, being the defender of the neighbours’ interests Juan Relinque; Rivas de Neira and Cobarrubias were the judges who passed judgement on that such system was kept.

They all have dedicated streets in Vejer with their corresponding illustrations for the general knowledge.
