URBAN PLAY

A man carries elements of play inside himself from the very beginning. More importantly for architecture as a direct feature of civilisational development, “Humanity has advanced, when it has advanced, not because it has been sober, responsible, and cautious, but because it has been playful, rebellious, and immature”-Tom Robbins. As Johan Huizinga would assert, play is older than culture and man was playing before he has become civilized. He went so far to say that play has been playing a central role in developing of human culture. In adulthood, however, Play has been repres-

sed. It becomes purposeless in people’s minds. This phenomenon is especially strong in capitalistic societies of today in which man has more and more responsibilities, both at home and at work. Studies had shown that it is workload and issues related to other “have to do things” that are main causes of stress. I believe that these playful impulses that remained deep inside adults could be helpful in dealing with challenges imposed by everyday life. This role could be strengthened to lower stress levels, especially in commuter situations that usually just waste their time.

A concept of mine tends to make these responsibilities easier to deal with and to bring more joy and fun into the life, which will inevitably result in more ideas and therefore in better tomorrow, that is the one of the main reasons for our existence. I see my project as a natural tool for civilisational prosperity that could be established as a strategy for generations to come. Moreover, I see it as a valve from routines of finishing daily errands and escaping to another world, heterotopic, imaginational and perfect one.

A CULTURAL EPICENTER
Location: Kulturforum, Berlin, Germany
This location as space in present time does not exist since all Kulturforum’s objects are far away from each other. Each one of them is located on its own island, which makes them individuals. Therefore, my point of view was to create one bigger entity that will connect all of them in one organism. In order to achieve that, a new individual is needed. By strong individual gesture, I am forming a new island, which in the moment when becomes the island, automatically activates other islands and creates one archipelago. According to the better connectivity, the building is eaten by the city, it opens to the city and to the public usage. Permeation of museum (private) and public spaces is of crucial importance if we want to activate this lost island. Clear and strong structure, will only point out more the spaces around it, which will, in the circle, point out the first (structure) spaces, and so on to the endless circle. The city of Berlin is becoming a part of the exhibition that could be seen from terraces and penetrated spaces. This structure should represent the heart of the whole organism, archipelago, which is pulsing as a center of gravity, vacuuming and spreading the energy of the city of Berlin.

KOSMOPOLIS
Location: Stuttgart, Germany
Wichtigster Bezugspunkt des Projekts ist der sozialpsychologische Aspekt. Die Empfindungen der Besucher sind wesentliches Entwurfskriterium. Für den Prozess der Sozialisation spielt Kommunikation die Hauptrolle. Es muss daher darum gehen, Räume zu schaffen, die Kontakte zwischen den Menschen fördern, Treffpunkte der Kulturen, Orte der Kommunikation, des Gesprächs, auch des visuellen Austauschs. Um der Komplexität des interkulturellen Dialogs, aber auch der Kommunikation verschiedener Nutzergruppen gerecht werden zu können, bedarf es verschiedener räumlicher Erfahrungen und räumlicher Verbindungen. Die Idee des Projekts basiert auf dem Archetyp des Platzes, wo sich Menschen und Funktionen verflechten. Der Platz ist nach wie vor das wichtigste räumliche Verbindungsglied in der Ordnung von Stadträumen. Die besondere Topografie des Ortes ermöglicht es, auf verschiedenen Ebenen Platzräume zu schaffen. Die Anordnung der Volumen folgt den topografischen Gegebenheiten und ist so gewählt, dass die Freiräume trotz der beengten Grundstücksverhältnisse so gut wie

möglich aktiviert werden können. Der größte Teil der Funktionen ist in einer angehobenen Plattform untergebracht. Dadurch ergeben sich Freiräume auf der +/- 0,00-Ebene, die als Vorplatz für den Mehrzwecksaal dienen, als Kommunikationstteils erweitert und als Treff- und Aussichtspunkt gestaltet ist. Dieser Stadtbalkon, der durch ein Café funktional bereichert wird, ist mit seiner schönen Aussicht über Stadt und Schlossgarten als Entspannungs- und Kommunikationsraum konzipiert. Zwischen diesen Freiräumen auf den unterschiedlichen Ebenen stellen kommunikative vertikale Räume die Verbindung zwischen Nutzern und angegliederten Funktionen her. Dabei bildet die Plattform auf der Höhe zwischen 8 und 12m das Rückgrat des Gebäudeensembles. Hier findet über offene, flexibel gestaltete Räume die Verknüpfung mit den darüber und darunter liegenden Funktionen statt, hier wird das Zentrum für Migration zu einer Einheit zusammengeführt, die auf dieser Ebene wiederum einen öffentlichen Platzraum im Innenraum bildet in den die Wegebeziehungen münden.

THE STRUGGLE
Location: New Belgrade, Belgrade, Serbia
New Belgrade is one of the rare examples in which a dream of modernism has almost come true. City is divided by wide streets into a grid, creating atrium blocks with parks inside of them.
Exhibition pavillion of IT technologies
The building simbolizes domination of artificial technologies above nature, caused by technological habits of contemporary mayority.
Nature and artificial have been always in struggle, therefore IT pavilion is composed of two rectangular volumes one above the other. The upper volume is artificial, with glass facade and metal “space construction”. The ground volumen is “natural”, with grass facade and natural concrete in interior.

Location: Vracar, Belgrade, Serbia
residential/cultural
Mix of residential,public and cultural activities into one entity. The location is on the top of the hill in wider city centre. Therefore, it gives a great opportunity for viewing the city from residential towers as well as from public horizontal balcony. Unlike old “block” structure, new sollution opens to the public and revitalise urban importance of location. Open ground floor connects public to the theatre from the east and clinical centre from the west. Grass field for water supply on the south allows free views towards the city and gives “air to take a breath in chaotic contemporary metropolis”.

Location: Zvezdara forest, Belgrade, Serbia
Period of academic studies represents a life period when you ask yourself a lot of questions. In that period we are confused by the reality which is all around us, we are starting to recognize and to make conclusions, to be the persons with our own thinking. We are getting to know ourselves. That is the period in which are discovered, for the first time, elements of a grown man, but there is still space for playing the GAME!!
Student accomodation
Space in which “two friends” are playing is more rural than urban. Two friends are calling you to play with them and with their contents. They are approachable to everybody, which is very important in forming students’ personalities as individuals, in this world of reality that is all around us.
The game is the thing which makes people happy, and if we just know how to play we’ll know how to enjoy our lives. Life on its own is one big game, and if we do not know how to play it we are not living at all.
