The X-Axis equates to tread-width position or what is commonly referred to as “Pedal Q”. The X-Axis position is affected by the side-toj of the Zero cleat on the shoe. The tread-width p position side adjustment range can be further modified by choosing any one of the five choices of Speedplay pedal spindle lengths included in the Speedplay Pro Fit Case. The Y-Axis equates to the fore-aft position of the foot relative to the pedal spindle.

The Y-Axis position is affected by the fore-aft adjustment range of the black plastic Zero cleat Base Plate on the shoe. The Y-Axis can be further modified by choosing the Speedplay Aluminum Fore-Aft Extender Base Plate in the Speedplay Pro Fit Case which provides an extra 0.1969in (5mm) forward and an extra 0.5512in (14mm) rearward adjustment than the standard Base Plate. (4-Hole shoe soles eliminate the need for the standard Speedplay cleat Base Plate and achieve the fore-aft adjustments using the slots located directly in the shoe sole.)

Angle-of-Rotation on the Z-Axis equates to the range of rotational freedom of the foot or what is commonly referred to as “float”. Float range is affected by adjusting the heel-in/heel-out float-range screws on the Speedplay Zero cleat cleat. The Zero cleat position may also be “fixed” fixed at any point within the 15 degree float range if a fixed (no-float) foot position is preferred.

Angle-of-Tilt on the Y-Axis equates to inward/outward tilt of the foot on the pedal. Foot-tilt position is affected by adding one or more the Wedges to the shoe beneath the Zero cleat. #1 in Float Design Every clipless road pedal on the market provides for the option of rotational float. The fact that float is universally incorporated into every clipless road pedal should be all the evidence needed to emphasize its biomechanical necessity. Not all types of float, however, are created equally. Speedplay pedals, unlike some other brands, were designed to float on the dra drawing ing board board. One design design, beca because se it was as originall originally adapted from a ski binding, never anticipated the requirement of providing rotational float when it was developed. Therefore, this brand eventually had to be reengineered to allow for rotational movement. This design was later modified by adding some rotational heel-slop to the pedal/cleat interface, and they now call this float. When you see how Speedplay’s Speedplay s rounded pedal body fits into the rounded cavity in the cleat to form a natural pivot, it is clear that float was fundamental to its design. Quite simply, the friction-free, non-recentering, over- the-pedal-axis, micro-adjustable float designed into Speedplay pedals puts them in a class by themselves. Therefore, the manufacturing tolerances between Speedplay pedals and cleats are tighter than those of other brands. Myths Myth #1 Speedplay pedals cause hot spots. Reality In truth, Speedplay pedals do not cause hot spots. Hot spots are caused by a number of factors that may occur simultaneously, including: • Shoe soles that are too flexible • Shoes that are too tight around the forefoot and restrict blood flow either from g shoes, straps p that are over-tightened, g or socks that are too thick ill-fitting • Riding with a cleat that is positioned incorrectly (typically too far forward). • Riding in prolonged hot conditions • Riding a greater distance or with a harder effort than you are accustomed to riding • Riding with insoles that are too hard Myth M th #2 Speedplay pedals are light but the cleats are heavy. Reality In truth, the combined weight of Speedplay pedals and cleats is typically lighter than the combined weight of other brands. In fact, the combined weight of our systems can be as much as 20% lighter than the comparable price point pedals of our competitors. Because Speedplay pedals are so light, some competitors have tried to create a misconception about the weight of Speedplay cleats. Myths, Cont. Myth #4 You can’t get all of your power into a small pedal. Reality In truth, pedal size alone makes no difference in terms of power transmission. The important factors that affect power transmission with all pedal systems are shoe sole stiffness, shoe-sole stiffness stability of the platform from side side-to-side, to side and proper fore-aft fore aft cleat position. Some companies with large pedals have made pedal size an issue. These companies assert that the pedal alone is the platform. In fact, the platform in all clipless systems is the pedal and cleat combination when engaged. The key point to remember with Speedplay’s unique inverted design is that the pedal is compact, but the cleat is large and provides a comfortable, stable pedaling platform when engaged. Gap
This is a helpful tip when teaching customers the entry q of Speedplay p p y road technique pedals. Once the customer is engaged in the pedals for the first time, focus his or her attention on the gap between the instep of the shoe and the outside face of the crank arm. Ask the customer to memorize this gap. Then make sure the customer places his or her foot on the pedals with the same gap between the shoe and the crank arm each time. Be sure to only teach this tip in a safe f riding idi environment. i t With a little practice, the customer will not need to look down to get in.
