Pro Fit Case

•

The Speedplay Zero Pedal System is featured in the Speedplay Pro Fit Case as it offers the most options for customized adjustment of any clipless pedal system. system The Speedplay Zero is the only pedal system that provides precise, independent control of all five axis coordinates essential for total optimization of the foot-to-pedal interface. These five fit-position coordinate adjustments, explained below, include the X-Axis position, the Y-Axis position, the Z-Axis position, the Angle-of-Rotation on the Z-Axis, and th Angle-of-Tilt the A l f Tilt on the th Y-Axis. YA i

Rev. 20090814

15

The X-Axis equates to tread-width position or what is commonly referred to as “Pedal Q”. The X-Axis position is affected by the side-toj of the Zero cleat on the shoe. The tread-width p position side adjustment range can be further modified by choosing any one of the five choices of Speedplay pedal spindle lengths included in the Speedplay Pro Fit Case. The Y-Axis equates to the fore-aft position of the foot relative to the pedal spindle.

The Y-Axis position is affected by the fore-aft adjustment range of the black plastic Zero cleat Base Plate on the shoe. The Y-Axis can be further modified by choosing the Speedplay Aluminum Fore-Aft Extender Base Plate in the Speedplay Pro Fit Case which provides an extra 0.1969in (5mm) forward and an extra 0.5512in (14mm) rearward adjustment than the standard Base Plate. (4-Hole shoe soles eliminate the need for the standard Speedplay cleat Base Plate and achieve the fore-aft adjustments using the slots located directly in the shoe sole.)

The Z-Axis equates to the distance from the foot to the spindle spindle. The ZAxis position is affected by modifying the stack height of the Zero cleat by adding Speedplay Leg Length Shims beneath the Zero cleat to position the foot further from the pedal spindle

Rev. 20090814

16

Angle-of-Rotation on the Z-Axis equates to the range of rotational freedom of the foot or what is commonly referred to as “float”. Float range is affected by adjusting the heel-in/heel-out float-range screws on the Speedplay Zero cleat cleat. The Zero cleat position may also be “fixed” fixed at any point within the 15 degree float range if a fixed (no-float) foot position is preferred.

Angle-of-Tilt on the Y-Axis equates to inward/outward tilt of the foot on the pedal. Foot-tilt position is affected by adding one or more the Wedges to the shoe beneath the Zero cleat. The Wedges in the Speedplay Pro Fit Case are made by Bike Fit Systems (www.bikefit.com) and can be used to tilt the Zero cleat either inward or outward in 1 degree increments.

Sales Information

#1 in Easy, Dual-Sided Entry Speedplay invented the easier-to-engage, dual-sided clipless road pedal as an improvement over traditional pedal designs. Speedplay pedals were developed by cyclists, for cyclists, not adapted from a ski binding. The pedals are self-locating for faster, easier entry. No more looking down, no kicking over, no fumbling to clip in at every traffic signal.

UP

UP Rev. 20090814

18

#1 in Light Weight Speedplay's unique, inverted design with the engagement mechanism located in the cleat, makes Speedplay lighter than traditional clipless pedals. By simplifying pedal design and a d us using g lightweight, g t e g t, qua quality ty materials, ate a s, Speedplay Speedp ay reduces educes the weight of pedals without sacrifices or compromises to structural integrity. It is also important to recognize that the weight of pedals is "rotating weight" rather than "static" weight. With Speedplay pedals, this reduction in rotating weight provides a significant performance advantage over heavier p pedal systems. y

Rev. 20090814

19

#1 in Float Design Every clipless road pedal on the market provides for the option of rotational float. The fact that float is universally incorporated into every clipless road pedal should be all the evidence needed to emphasize its biomechanical necessity. Not all types of float, however, are created equally. Speedplay pedals, unlike some other brands, were designed to float on the dra drawing ing board board. One design design, beca because se it was as originall originally adapted from a ski binding, never anticipated the requirement of providing rotational float when it was developed. Therefore, this brand eventually had to be reengineered to allow for rotational movement. This design was later modified by adding some rotational heel-slop to the pedal/cleat interface, and they now call this float. When you see how Speedplay’s Speedplay s rounded pedal body fits into the rounded cavity in the cleat to form a natural pivot, it is clear that float was fundamental to its design. Quite simply, the friction-free, non-recentering, over- the-pedal-axis, micro-adjustable float designed into Speedplay pedals puts them in a class by themselves. Speedplay’s pedal designs are the most sophisticated mechanical devices ever developed to accommodate the sophisticated, diverse range of biomechanical variations required by the shoe-tobicycle interface. Speedplay pedals were designed to prevent biomechanical issues as well as to aid in the rehabilitation of existing injuries.

Rev. 20090814

20

#1 in Float Adjustment Unlike any other brand, Speedplay Zeros allow rotational float to be micro-adjusted within the 15-degree float range or set to a fixed position. Two limit screws on each cleat control the amount and angle of float with separate adjustments for inward and outward heel rotation.

Rev. 20090814

21

#1 in Cleat Positioning and d Adjustment Adj t t Precision P i i No other pedal system offers fore-aft, side-to-side, and rotational foot positions that can be adjusted independently. Unlike the inexact set-up of traditional, one-piece cleats, each of the three adjustments of Zero cleats (two for Light Action and X), can be set or changed without affecting the position of the other adjustments. This feature also eliminates guesswork and misalignment when replacing cleats, a concern of all cyclists from consumers to top professionals.

Fore-Aft Adjustment

Side-to-Side Adjustment

Rev. 20090814

22

#1 in Platform Size Don't confuse pedal size with platform size. Platform size is the contact area between the shoe and the cleat where your foot actually applies power. The Speedplay cleat provides a pedaling platform contact area that is up to 25% larger than other brands.

Rev. 20090814

23

#1 in Low Stack Height With the lowest stack height available, Speedplay Pedal Systems provide better power transmission than any other brand. For example, a change to Speedplay with a 3-hole shoe sole will require your seat height to be lowered a full 3.9mm from Shimano Dura Ace pedals and an even greater 5.7mm from Look Keo pedals. When using a 4-hole shoe sole, seat height must be lowered an additional 3mm over these previous measurements.

Rev. 20090814

24

#1 in Energy Transfer Direct power transfer through the pedals is essential for energy efficiency. Therefore, the manufacturing tolerances between Speedplay pedals and cleats are tighter than those of other brands. The springloaded gate mechanism of traditional pedals has excessive for-aft "slop" built-in as an inherent and unfortunate byproduct of its design. This excessive slop between the pedals and the cleats only becomes apparent when riding, where it robs energy with every pull phase of the pedal stroke. Traditional Pedal and Cleat Slop Magnified to Show Detail

Pull Phase

Push Phase

The two enlarged photos above clearly show the slop between a competitor’s pedal body and the cleat. The photo on the left side was taken during the pull phase of the pedal stoke and the photo on the right was taken during the push phase of the stroke. Compare the size of the gap in each photo (between the screw head and the flat part of the pedal body) to see the extent of the fore-aft slop.

Rev. 20090814

25

#1 in Locking Security Unlike other brands which rely on a spring latch, Speedplay pedals have a true-locking mechanism that isolates spring tension from locking security. Speedplay's design, which does not rely on spring tension for security, makes entry and exit easy but virtually eliminates unintentional release when sprinting or climbing.

Rev. 20090814

26

#1 in Cornering Clearance Speedplay's unique, inverted design results in a thin pedal profile that is not vulnerable to the danger of scraping the road when cornering as with larger pedals. With Speedplay pedals, a rider can continuously pedal through corners when riders on other pedals are forced to coast.

Rev. 20090814

27

#1 in Aerodynamics In recent wind tunnel tests, Speedplay proved to have a significant aerodynamic advantage over the other pedals tested. Switching to Speedplay can save up to 33 seconds per hour - the equivalent to the speed gained when switching from a standard front wheel to a deepprofile, aerodynamic front wheel.

Rev. 20090814

28

#1 in Durability The locking edges of Speedplay pedals and cleats are hardened alloy steel, unlike our competitors who use engagement edges made of plastic. Plus, the locking mechanism of a Speedplay cleat is fully recessed, so you will never wear down the pedal contact area from walking like other brands with plastic cleats.

Metal-to-Metal Locking Edges

Rev. 20090814

29

#1 in Serviceability Speedplay pedals are the only pedals to offer a built-in grease port for ease of bearing lubrication. Unlike other brands, replacement parts for maintenance and rebuilding are available for Speedplay pedals and cleats to ensure long life and customer satisfaction.

Rev. 20090814

30

#1 in Compatibility Speedplay cleats fit more shoes. Speedplay is the only road pedal system that is compatible with both 3-Hole and 4-Hole shoes. Frog cleats fit any SPD-compatible shoe, road or off-road.

#1 in Pedal Ergonomics Ergonomics is defined as the science related to human abilities and limitations relative to the work environment. Its anatomic, physiologic and mechanical principles, when applied to design, aim to make products that are efficient, comfortable and safe. Speedplay's design philosophy of precision fit, user-friendly function, user safety, and efficient performance is the very embodiment of this science. No other brand can match Speedplay's custom fitting options, user-friendly features, or designed-in safety. As a result, Speedplay has become synonymous with cycling comfort and injury prevention.

Rev. 20090814

32

#1 in Package of F Features and dB Benefits fi One glance at Speedplay’s unique menu of features and benefits and it is clear that no other pedal system even comes close.

Rev. 20090814

33

#1 in Custom Fitting O i Options Speedplay offers the most comprehensive fit options for both pedals and cleats than all other brands combined. Speedplay is the only pedal system that offers 5 independent fit-position coordinate adjustments for the shoe/pedal interface. The Speedplay Pro Fit Case contains each of our custom-made options and is available to bicycle fitting professionals to assist in solving virtually every biomechanical challenge.

Rev. 20090814

34

#1 in Workmanship Speedplay products are hand-assembled and packaged in our factory in San Diego, of locally-sourced components. Premium quality materials are used throughout to create a high performance product.

Rev. 20090814

35

#1 in Value Low price is only one of the components of value. When you consider price, quality, and the features and benefits of a pedal system, Speedplay’s value is unmatched by any brand. In fact, Speedplay’s lowest priced pedals surpass the features and benefits available in the top-of-the-line pedals of our competitors.

Rev. 20090814

36

The Price of Cleats Speedplay vs. vs the Other Brands When comparing cleats, it helps to understand that there is a significant difference between a Speedplay cleat and any other cleat. Speedplay cleats are precision engineered engineered, house a sophisticated engagement mechanism, and are constructed from premium-grade materials. Unlike any other, the Speedplay cleat allows for self-locating, dual-sided entry, and with the Zero, provides for the unique ability to micro-adjust the range of float or fix the cleat’s position. The Speedplay cleat is also built in layers to allow independent fore-aft and side-to-side cleat set up without the need for a special positioning tool. The layered-cleat design can also accommodate both 3-hole and 4-hole shoe soles. The h d hardened-alloy d ll outer t surface f off the th Speedplay S d l cleat l t iis considerably id bl more durable than plastic when walking and because the contact surface that mates with the pedal is recessed, walking on the cleat will never wear down the pedal-to-cleat connection. As a last detail, Speedplay cleats do not have the annoying tendency to squeak when riding as is common with traditional plastic cleats. Once you compare the Speedplay cleat to a single piece of injection-molded plastic, it is pp the difference. easier to appreciate

Myths Myth #1 Speedplay pedals cause hot spots. Reality In truth, Speedplay pedals do not cause hot spots. Hot spots are caused by a number of factors that may occur simultaneously, including: • Shoe soles that are too flexible • Shoes that are too tight around the forefoot and restrict blood flow either from g shoes, straps p that are over-tightened, g or socks that are too thick ill-fitting • Riding with a cleat that is positioned incorrectly (typically too far forward). • Riding in prolonged hot conditions • Riding a greater distance or with a harder effort than you are accustomed to riding • Riding with insoles that are too hard Myth M th #2 Speedplay pedals are light but the cleats are heavy. Reality In truth, the combined weight of Speedplay pedals and cleats is typically lighter than the combined weight of other brands. In fact, the combined weight of our systems can be as much as 20% lighter than the comparable price point pedals of our competitors. Because Speedplay pedals are so light, some competitors have tried to create a misconception about the weight of Speedplay cleats. In an effort to compete some have even gone as far as using advertisements and printed compete, specifications on their packaging that list the weight of a single pedal, suggesting the weight is for a pair. At www.speedplay.com, you can compare pedal models from Speedplay, side-by-side with other brands, and see the actual combined weight of each system. Once you compare for yourself, you will discover that Speedplay pedals and cleats are invariably lighter than those of other brands. Myth #3 Speedplay pedals have too much float. Reality In truth, there is no such thing as “too much float.” The range of a pedal’s float should only be dictated by either personal preference or biomechanical necessity. The concept of too much float is a misconception put forward by other pedal companies that sell pedals with a limited float range. The float range of these pedals is a result of a limitation of their design. These pedals simply cannot provide any more float. Without substantiation, they infer that pedal systems with a greater range of float than theirs are undesirable.

Rev. 20090814

38

Myths, Cont. Myth #4 You can’t get all of your power into a small pedal. Reality In truth, pedal size alone makes no difference in terms of power transmission. The important factors that affect power transmission with all pedal systems are shoe sole stiffness, shoe-sole stiffness stability of the platform from side side-to-side, to side and proper fore-aft fore aft cleat position. Some companies with large pedals have made pedal size an issue. These companies assert that the pedal alone is the platform. In fact, the platform in all clipless systems is the pedal and cleat combination when engaged. The key point to remember with Speedplay’s unique inverted design is that the pedal is compact, but the cleat is large and provides a comfortable, stable pedaling platform when engaged. Myth #5 Speedplay pedals require too much maintenance. Reality In truth, cutting-edge performance products like Speedplay Pedal Systems require some minimal routine maintenance. Considering all the advantages of Speedplay pedals, the recommended routine maintenance will ensure optimal performance and long term enjoyment of your investment. In Review If Speedplay pedals really did all the things that these myths imply, we wouldn’t ride them either!
