Chapter 7 THE ROYAL FAMILY: MAKING A DIFFERENCE
The Royal Family of Bhutan is embodiment of benevolence for the Bhutanese. The present Queens of Bhutan have been pioneers in the establishment of non-governmental
organizations and play a pivotal role in addressing a range of social issues. Women and children’s issues and rights, poverty alleviation, juvenile delinquency, youth unemployment and counselling are areas in which the Queens have played a crucial role. Their Majesties the Queens and members of the Royal Family interact very closely and openly with people from all walks of life, during several visits to different and remote parts of the country each year. This enables them to understand the ground realities for themselves and design need-based and relevant developmental programmes and projects. They also actively support fund-raising initiatives, both within the country and abroad. Their Majesties the Queens are supported by other members of the Royal Family, which includes the Princes and Princess in gracing many public occasions of varying degrees of importance.
