Leadership of Venezuela

As a proposal to reduce the asymmetries between the small island nations and the continental countries, Minister RodrĂguez cited as reference, the expertise of Petrocaribe, as well as of the countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America - People's Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) that, through social, economic and cultural projects, have brought progress to the Caribbean countries.

In the interview, the Minister for People’s Power for Foreign Affairs highlighted the leadership positions currently held by Venezuela in various forums of political concertation worldwide. In this regard, she recalled that the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela exercises the Pro Tempore Presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR); In addition to being part of the Council of Human Rights and Council of Economic and Social Rights of the United Nations.

"We can not go through a process of economic integration if we do not reduce the asymmetries that exist between our people. Small Island States are the main victims of climate change, and climate change in turn is the product of an inhuman and unjust development model such as is capitalism," she added.

Venezuela raises its voice for the extension of the Security Council of the UN emerging southern powers must be taken into account. "For Venezuela a possible enlarged Council could be made up of a total of 25 to 26 members, including the five current permanent members, six possible new permanent members and 15 elected or non-permanent members," said Ramirez as quoted in a note from the Permanent Mission of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the United Nations.

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has once again raised its voice in favor of expansion of the Security Council of the United Nations (UN), so that its fundamental objectives can be fulfilled in order to maintain peace and world security.

He mentioned that the exclusion of a large part of its States has resulted into important proposals for humanity to be discarded, such as the cases of Palestine and Western Sahara, which are 50 and 25 years old respectively on the Council's agenda, without having reached no decisive measure for the solution of these conflicts.

The UN is made up of 193 countries, of which 15 are represented in the Security Council and only five are permanent members with veto rights, which unfortunately reduces the participation of most countries in decision-making.

There are also sanctions committees, 70% of which focus on African countries. In this regard, Ramirez reiterated the willingness of the Bolivarian Government to work towards a reform that strengthens the United Nations system and ensures its work on behalf of humanity.

At the UN General Assembly session on the reform of the Security Council, Venezuela's permanent representative to the United Nations, Rafael RamĂrez, said that

Tanzanian Government to build depots at a cost of Sh7bn In its effort to decongest Dar es Salaam Port, the government will next month start constructing an inland container depot (ICD) worth Sh7.286 billion at Ruvu in Coast Region. The minister of Works, Transport and Communications, Prof Makame Mbarawa, told reporters that there are also plans to to widen and deepen the berths of the port and construct a new one at Mtwara Port that would enable large vessels to dock.

Tanzania Ports Authority director general Deusdedit Kakoko (left) and Suma JKT Principal Legal Counsel John Mbungo exchange documents in Dar es Salaam yesterday after signing an agreement for the construction of a dry port at Ruvu Darajani in Coast Region. Looking on is the Minister of Works, Transport and Communications, Prof Makame Mbarawa. The proposed Sh7.2 billion facility is expected to reduce truck congestion in Dar es Salaam.

Speaking in the city yesterday after witnessing the signing of the agreement to implement the project between the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) and Suma JKT of the Tanzania National Service (TNS), Prof Mbarawa said the work would be completed after nine weeks and 500 hectares had been set aside for the purpose.

The project, he said, would be followed by a similar one at Dar es Salaam Port specifically for servicing imported cars and vehicles. Also, existing berths No 1-7 would be expanded and made deeper to allow large and modern ships to dock, especially when the tides were low.

TPA was represented by DirectorGeneral Deusdedit Kakoko, while TNS Principal Legal Counsel, Col John Mbungo signed the papers on behalf of Suma JKT. “Once the project is completed, we expect an accelerated movement of goods, especially containers, from Dar es Salaam Port to the ICD, something that will decongest it, and since the Tanzania Railway Limited is expected to be used in the movement, traffic jams will also be minimised,” he said. He noted that the government was satisfied that the contractor had the capacity to efficiently undertake the project. Prof Mbarawa also revealed that there were plans to remove all ICDs outside the city.

“Contractors for these projects have been sought using the existing tendering system. Currently, the contracts are being verified by the Attorney General (AG) before establishing their due diligence”, he said declining to disclose the names of the companies and value of the projects at least for the moment. For his part, Col Mbungo assured the minister that the project would be implemented on time and integrity following past experience in undertaking major government projects.

Prof Mbarawa said the next plan was to construct a 300-metre wide berth at Mtwara Port that would enable large ships to dock.
