Venezuela hails the US by holding elections and congratulates President-elect Donald Trump.

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela acknowledges the United States of America for holding its presidential elections on the 8th November, 2016.

The Bolivarian Government of Venezuela congratulates President-elect Donald Trump and hopes that progress can be made in a future that respects the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations, which enshrines the sovereign equality of States and the selfdetermination of People, among others, through respectful bilateral political and diplomatic relations.

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela hopes that in this new stage, which begins for the American nation, new paradigms can be established with our Region based on the recognition of the cultural, social and historical identities of our countries and respect for the Intervention in internal affairs, the right to development and peace.

We also hope that the United States of America will be able to address the major economic, social and political challenges facing humanity and in which its actions areimportant for global peace and stability.

Venezuela congratulates Daniel Ortega and the Nicaraguan people for victory in the presidential elections.

The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro Moros, on behalf of the Government and the Venezuelan people, conveys his hearty congratulations to President Daniel Ortega, Vice-President Rosario Murillo and the dignified people of the Republic of Nicaragua, for the undeniable Perfect Victory of the Sandinista Front in the Presidential elections held yesterday.

The victory obtained by the Nicaraguan people is the result of an extraordinary mobilization of the popular forces that, once again, demonstrates the high level of political awareness and commitment to continue strengthening the Socialist, Christian and Solidarity Project that concentrates the majority of Nicaraguan people in the construction of a sovereign, independent, free and peaceful homeland.

The exemplary demonstration of the Sandinista forces, guided by the values of unity, love, respect and dignity, is inspired by the historical gesture of Augusto César Sandino, and exalts the transcendence of this victory against imperialism and its allies which seek to restore the dark night of neoliberalism in our region.

A mural in honor of commander Hugo Chávez opened in Algeria

A large mural in honor of the leader of the Bolivarian Revolution of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, was inaugurated in Algiers, capital of Algeria, painted on a facade by the Algerian artist Hicham Gaua.

The opening ceremony was presided over by the Venezuelan Ambassador to Algeria, José de Jesús Sojo Reyes, who emphasized the affection that the Algerian people always professed to the commander, "lover of peace, but of a peace based on justice."

The mural is large and portrays Hugo Chavez smiling and dressed in military uniform.

At the opening ceremony, the diplomat was accompanied by several Latin American and African ambassadors.

Venezuela and Algeria established diplomatic relations on March 23rd, 1971 and with the arrival of Commander Chavez to the

Presidency of Venezuela, and as part of South-South cooperation, bilateral agreements, memoranda of understanding and cooperation programs multiplied exponentially in Strategic areas such as energy, politics, communication, education, culture, commercial, industrial and agriculture.

The revolutionary leader reiterated his satisfaction with the strengthening of these relations of cooperation and expressed his solidarity with the Algerian people for their struggles "people who have achieved this beginning of the century in the struggle for a common destiny, for a better destiny," he said.

In addition, Algeria, as one of the main oil and gas producers in Africa, has expressed its support for President Nicolas Maduro's initiative to promote a stable price for oil. www.aporrea.org

Kenyan develops a drug for

superbugs

A Kenyan scientist has developed an antibiotic to treat disease-causing bacteria that are immune to the existing drugs, or superbugs.

Mr Ryan Awori, 27, announced his innovation on Tuesday at an international science conference in Berlin, Germany. His drug — Mursamacin — is derived from roundworms in soils found in central Kenya. The worms release beneficial bacteria which produce antibiotics that destroy rot-causing organisms.

SUPERBUG MDRA

Speaking to the Nation at the Falling Walls Conference in Berlin on Tuesday, Mr Awori said: “We looked at whether this antibiotic can be used to destroy disease-causing bacteria which are resistant to commonly used drugs. We began six years ago, and we have seen that it works by destroying the bacteria that cause skin infection and mastitis in cows.”

The antibiotic is the result of a collaboration between Mr Awori and researchers at Trek Science, a start-up biotech company, in partnership with the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (Icipe), the University of Nairobi and the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (Karlo). The drug is expected to be in stores in five years, once it gets approval.

“Over 50 per cent of skin infections in the country are caused by methicilin-resistant Staphlycoccus aureus bacteria,” Mr Awori said. “Mursamacin destroys this superbug and works eight times better than the common antibiotics.”

MEDICAL PROCEDURES Microbial resistance happens when micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites change on exposure to antimicrobial drugs, particularly antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, antimalarials and anthelmintics.

Such resistance makes it risky to carry out medical procedures such as organ transplants, chemotherapy, diabetes management and major surgery, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Mr Awori said he hoped his presentation at the Berlin conference will help his team to secure funding to develop the drug, which would be a “great solution for a global concern that affect Kenyans”.

Mr Awori’s presentation was one of 100 scientific innovations to be discussed at the Falling Walls Conference, which will be officially opened on Wednesday.

The meeting seeks to come up with solutions, ideas and innovations to solve many of the world’s problems — such as cancer, infectious diseases and food security.

Its opening coincides with the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989. www.nation.co.ke
