ALBA stands in solidarity with Venezuela against imperial onslaughts

The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America - Trade Treaty of the Peoples (ALBA-TCP), a 12-year-old mechanism, expressed its solidarity with the Venezuelan government and people that have been targeted by imperial attacks. In a statement signed on Wednesday in Havana, Cuba, and read by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, the regional integration bloc warned that the sole objective of the imperial forces is to defeat the government of President Nicolรกs Maduro and thus, prevent the independence of the Great Homeland. In that sense, ALBA has decided to support the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the Bolivarian Revolution and defend them from the multiple forms of aggression they are subject to by imperialism and its local allies, who seek to defeat the legitimate and constitutional Government of President Nicolรกs Maduro Moros, as well as stifle the historical project: the independence of the Great Homeland, said the document, read in the commemoration of ALBA's twelfth anniversary.

OUR AMERICA WITH MORE UNITY, INTERGRATION AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

In the activity, also attended by President Maduro and his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro, the group also expressed its emphatic rejection of all attempts to reverse regional progress in terms of unity, political consensus and integration achieved in recent years, as well as the imposition of projects of neocolonial domination similar to the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), whose unfortunate consequences we already know. It also reaffirmed the rights of Venezuela as a MERCOSUR State Party and its legitimate right to exercise the pro tempore presidency of the organization, faced with the aggression of the new Triple Alliance (Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay), which illegally aims to suspend the Bolivarian nation from the regional bloc, with the excuse that Caracas has not adopted MERCOSUR's membership norms. On the other hand, ALBA expressed its support for the Venezuelan government's efforts to engage in a dialogue with the opposition, a call promoted by the Government as a way for peace and stability of the country. www.avn.info.ve 2

Promoting the unknown about Africa Uganda launches East Africa's largest solar power plant The Republic of Uganda has launched a 19 million U.S. dollar solar power plant In the remote eastern district of Soroti. The project which is the largest in East Africa, is the latest addition to Uganda’s power generation plants, to feed its increasing demand for power as the east African country strives to fast track its development. The plant runs by Access Power Middle East and Africa and Luxembourg-based Eren Renewable Energy will power over 40,000 rural households in eastern Uganda. The Managing Director of Project Origination at Access, Vahid Fotuhi, told Xinhua at the launch of the plant that although the station has a nominal capacity of 10MW, it is scalable to 20MW. ‘‘This is a source of inspiration, it shows that there is a possibility of it not only becoming a national but an international player in the area of sustainable energy generation.’’ He said that in future the electricity produced by the plant will be increased to 30MW. He stressed that the construction of the solar plant shows the potential the country has in generating solar energy.

Frustrated by the expensive and not readily available hydro energy in most parts of the country, many Ugandans in rural areas have been investing in their own solar panels to light their homes at night and keep small businesses running. Villagers are optimistic that the new power plant will improve their livelihood. Achom Naomi who runs a nursery and primary school near the power plant said once the school accesses power, the educational standards will improve and there will be increased enrollment of pupils. The Ministry of energy figures show that electricity demand in Uganda is expected to increase constantly at an average annual rate of about 8%. Annually, 50MW of new generation capacity is needed to be added to the national grid in order to avoid supply shortages. www.hiiraan.com
