EDITOR’S LETTER
I
I have come to respect the Krummholz tree. This bent and twisted tree grows in rugged environments such as cliffs, mountain tops and canyon walls. This tree can live up to 150 years despite its unpleasant surroundings. Due to the continual exposure to fierce, freezing winds, their branches oftentimes bend so far down that they meet the ground. What inspires me most about this tree is how it perseveres in the face of adversity. As an entrepreneur, it is necessary to acquire this attribute. Incidents, sometimes on a daily basis, can either take a turn for the better or the worse. But how we choose to respond to these events, time after time, will aid in determining the level of strength and resilience needed to overcome during these situations. And over a lifetime, similar to the Krummholz tree, we learn to grow stronger and choose to bend, not break, in the presence of hardship. I’d be lying to you if I told you that I’ve never felt like giving up. It’s very common and natural for entreprenuers to feel this way from time to time. We question ourselves, as do others, about our goals and aspirations. About the risks we take each day and about the sacrifices we make. Which brings me to another similarity we have with the Krummholz tree: those living in the harshest environments, can only survive where they are sheltered by rock formations or snow cover. Just as on our own path, it is of vital importance to surround ourselves with people whom are strong and supportive. People whom believe in our cause and have our backs, especially when we feel we’re on the edge and can no longer endure the rigorous path. These will be the people whom will remind us of our intentions and whom will prevent us from breaking. Afterall, just like the Krummholz tree, our survival may depend on it.

The perfect gift for those who love healthy eating and sustainable travel. What is the use of the most beautiful rooms and an inviting pool, if you are referred to the side dishes in the restaurant? For vegetarians and vegans a holiday in a hotel can be a challenge. But there are excellent alternatives - you just have to find them. The travel journalists Thomas and Karen Klein also thought about this and invented 2011 toghether with their friend Peter Haunert the hotel cooperation and website VeggieHotels for 100% vegetarian hotels and b&b´s. In addition to the purely vegetarianvegan hotels, more and more venues now offer their guests an excellent vegan cuisine next to their conventional dishes. The founders of VeggieHotels therefore devoted a special web portal to the most recommended hotels in this area in 2015: VeganWelcome. With their work, they not only made known some guesthouses that are run by enthusiastically-minded people, but also became pioneers of a tourism where ethical principles and sustainability are no foreign words.

If you’re reading this, I’d bet that you would test positive for glyphosate. And you’re probably thinking, ‘’glyfo-what?’’As much as it would be nice to think that food is just food, it’s simply not a luxury we can afford. When I first learned about the pletora of additives in our food, I felt angry. Now, I just want to help other people learn the truth. That said, let’s venture down this rabbit hole. ‘If you want to be healthy, start by not eating poison.’ TELEVISION: WHERE IT ALL BEGAN From the 1900s through 1950s, most foods were processed and packaged to keep them fresh. Shortly after World War II, the world of marketing exploded with the introduction mass visual marketing and the color television. Almost overnight, processed foods with mystery additives became not only accepted, but preferred. Suddenly, diet sodas, sweeteners, fast food, and TV dinners became the choice of the new generation. Entering 2018, the richest country in the world is plagued by epidemics of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, autism, attention disorders, anxiety, and depression. THERE IS HOPE As a culture, we’ve reached the breaking point and people are looking for solutions. Whole foods, Natural Grocers, and farmers markets are making a come back. Ingredient and origin labeling are mandatory. For anyone wanting healthy options, it’s becoming easier. 38

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR Keep in mind that research is constantly finding new side effects and disproving others. My goal is simply to educate. You make your own decisions! 1. HIGH-FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP: The insulin spike from HFCS conditions your brain to crave more. For kids, you might as well give them cocaine. Also, it decreases insulin sensitivity and increases fat storage in comparison to regular sugar. 2. COLORING: Blue 1, Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 are all associated with allergies, asthma, cancer, and could be a major contributor to children ADHD. 3. ‘NATURAL FLAVOR’ and ‘ARTIFICIAL FLAVORING’: First of all, what does that even mean? Call me skeptical, but I’m pretty sure it’s just a ‘’legal’’ way of getting around FDA labeling laws. Ultimately, why would you eat something if you don’t know what it is? 4. Sweeteners: Stevia, aspartame, sucralose, splenda, etc. have been linked with allergies and problems like ADHD. Ironically, even the taste of a fake sweeteners can spike insulin levels, which causes fat storage and low energy. 5. SUGAR: If you can cut out all the other additives and sweeteners out of your diet, do it! Instead, have some real cane sugar, in moderation of course. 6. SODIUM NITRATE: Sorry bacon lovers… I feel your pain. High sodium diets are correlated with

various cancers, digestive issues, hypertension, and maybe even diabetes. Just do your best! 7. CARAGEENAN: This food thickener can raise blood sugar levels, trigger digestive issues, and maybe cause ulcers. 8. PRESERVATIVES: Sodium Benzoate (aka Benzoic acid & benzene) is in so many things. Though considered safe by the all-knowing FDA, it’s been found to cause a variety of side-effects including hyperactivity in children, ADHD in college students, and is correlated with various cancers. 9. GLYPHOSATE: The main ingredient in Monsanto Round-up. It is designed to kill everything that isn’t genetically engineered to survive it, but Monsanto claims that it is not absorbed by the body and has no side effects. However, studies show positive tests for it in humans and even fetuses.
as antibiotics and anti-inflammatories given to keep the cows alive. Lastly, there are enough hormones in milk to make an 800 pound cow in 4 months. If you think those hormones aren’t affecting you, you’re lying to yourself. Do I love ice cream, yogurt and cheese? Yes I do, but I try to limit my exposure. I recommend you so also. *Furth Research at Healthline.com and NCBI (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
IN CONCLUSION ‘You probably don’t even remember what it feels like to be healthy.’ One of the problems is that it’s nearly impossible to study any single one of these additives because many of them cause no measurable reaction in humans unless combined with other additives. The best solution is to try and eliminate as much as possible. It sounds hard, I know. I’ve been there. Just start thinking of these things as ‘poisons’ to slowly cut them out of your diet. Personally, my focus, energy, and attitude have improved greatly. It’s like I’ve come out of a brain fog into a sunny day. I have clients and friends who will say the same. Try it out and let me know how it goes at thompson.joshua@live.com.
a. Just avoid it! Unfortunately, it’s in nearly every wheat, corn and vegetable product in this country. b. Interesting note: Citizens in Hungary burned down every Monsanto field in their country because Monsanto bribed the government to keep Round-up legal. 10. DAIRY. It would take a couple pages to break the surface on this topic. If you are getting your Dairy from the supermarket, it has been altered by processing. For one, the cholesterol changes into a toxic form called an oxysterol during the processing. Second, when cows are corn and grain fed, their whole digestive system has to adapt to a lower ph which stresses their liver and proliferates bacteria. The milk and meat is then full of inflammatory acids, pus, blood, and a variety of medications such

For a moment, imagine it’s 2,000 years ago. You’re all alone in search of food. You’ve been trudging along all day without success. Suddenly, a lion appears in the path ahead of you. Unfortunately, the lion sees you also. It’s too late to run. You have a bow and arrow, but that is hardly enough to save you from this ferocious animal. In this moment, all you can think about is how much you wish you had the support of your tribe. Suddenly, you hear footsteps quickly closing in behind you. You’re too afraid to turn around, but you notice the lion has become hesitant in its advance. Next you hear roaring voices and the sound of spears whisking overhead as the lion retreats to find a meal elsewhere. Only then can you muster up the nerve to turn around and notice your tribe has come to save you. That is the beauty of being part of a tribe. Are you and your business part of 42

a tribe? Who’s got your back in both good times and bad? While there’s untold value in being part of a tribe, it is important to know that all tribes aren’t created equal. How do you find the tribe that’s right for you? A few things to consider are culture, resources, industry mix, and vision. According to Webster’s Dictionary, “culture is the set of shared attitudes, values, goals and practices that characterizes an institution or organization.” Culture isn’t what’s written in your handbook or what rolls off the tongue. Culture is how the organization actually functions. For example: If someone in the tribe is in a tough situation and it’s highly likely that several members of the tribe would come to help, that is culture. Likewise, if no one cares about your success or lack thereof, that is the culture. Again, culture isn’t what we say it is, it what actually is!

The earliest known civilizations settled near Mesopotamia, which means “land between two waters.” Nomads settled there because the water resources made other resources such as food and fertile grounds plentiful. For the first time in history, people could settle in one place. They began to build permanent homes. This was possible because they could survive there. What resources are available in your tribe? Are they effective? How much time is devoted to research and development of resources? Innovation is important in any tribe. The right resources should aid you in accomplishing your business goals. Your personal wellbeing and the wellbeing of the tribe as a whole is dependent upon the resources offered. In early tribes, there were hunters and gatherers. As the tribes grew into civilizations their needs changed. Later tribes would have hunters, gatherers, soldiers, builders and chiefs. As the tribes grew so did opportunity for additional roles. Having the support of a tribe can work wonders for your business. Find a tribe that supports you and your goals, considering culture, resources, industry mix, and vision. The tribe should ideally aid not only your business, but personal growth as well. The road of entrepreneurship is the road less travelled, not the road untraveled. There are others on the road, find a tribe that will help you reach your destiny. If you can’t find one, create one! That’s what we did at VENTRE. When we started, we were only going to focus on online resources such as coupon, events, job postings and our loyalty program. The mission was simply to find ways to drive consumers to small businesses who’re often disadvantaged because the lack the capital to invest in most forms of advertising. Eventually, we realized something was missing. We had to rework the formula. We needed more interaction between our members. This was necessary if we were going to function like a tribe. The problem for us is that we’d been part of other organizations and experienced things we didn’t like. The relationships often seemed ingenuine with the obligatory meetings and forced passing of leads. We didn’t want any part of it, so we had to figure 46

We began to explore every annoyance we’d experienced with other groups. We kept what we liked, removed what we didn’t and added a bit of our own flare. When it was all done, we had the SYNERGY Project. The SYNERGY Project is a masterminds/networking event. These events allowed our
members to get to know each other better and help one another across hurdles. It represents the strength of our tribe. These meetings create a culture that visitors notice and most want to be part of it. “This is really different,” they say! They notice the support and how it feels like family. Some people aren’t comfortable with that, so they don’t become a member. We’re perfectly fine with that. We only

While these works are useful analyses of established creative economy ecosystems, they don’t provide leaders with practical advice on how to start or expand a creative economy ecosystem.
This book is intended to fuel the global Creative Economy movement, energizing leaders—like you—who strive to build resilient economies, engage youth, create jobs, and spark wealth formation. Our vision for this book is to highlight the creative entrepreneurs often bypassed by traditional “tech” accelerators, economic development strategies, and private sector investors. With this book, we place creative industries entrepreneurs at the center of economic development strategies that are not only effective, but essential.
Our experiences building creative ecosystems from Kuala Lumpur to Kuwait, Baltimore to Brisbane, tell us that entrepreneurs are the visionaries, the do-ers, the risktakers essential to successful economic development. Without entrepreneurs, there simply is no economy in your city, your region. We hope this book will encourage more leaders to invest in Creative Economy entrepreneurs, and more regions to support creative ventures—from startups to scaleups.
There is a lack of Creative Economy publications focusing on the role and value of entrepreneurship. THE DIVIDENDS OF DECENCY By DONALD LEE SHEPPARD with JOHN LAWRENCE REYNOLDS “People who conduct business without principles destroy themselves and do terrible damage to their colleagues, their organizations, and to those of us who emphasize truth and respect in our business dealings,” says former business executive and entrepreneur Donald Lee Sheppard. From modest beginnings, Sheppard quickly rose through the ranks of major international benefits consulting companies before launching his own employee communications firm, Sheppard Associates. In his new book, The Dividends Of Decency: How Values-Based Leadership will Help Business Flourish in Trump’s America [Figure 1 Publishing, April 2018], he underlines the importance of businesses maintaining strong moral values not simply because it is “the right thing to do” but because the practice pays off with better long-term bottom-line performance. He supports his premise with fascinating insights into the struggles he faced in his own business endeavors, presenting a compelling narrative urging readers to counter Trump’s corrupt influence. Part business manifesto and part memoir, The Dividends of Decency provides readers with solid advice, teaching and showing by example how companies can achieve outstanding success when following established codes of ethics rather than deceit and dishonesty. Neither an ethics guide nor an autobiography, The Dividends of Decency stands as a unique business profile of two decidedly different individuals, their values in distinct contrast with each other. In compelling
text spiced with anecdotes and personal experience, Sheppard demonstrates that principles and profits are not mutually exclusive, and that conducting business in a principled manner can significantly improve a company’s profits and elevate its relationship with employees, customers, suppliers and partners, shareholders and the community at large. “Examples of values-based CEOs who achieved outstanding success for their companies are not just easy to find,” Sheppard notes, “they’re prominent throughout the business media.” Then, with a directness typical of his book’s candor he adds, “If you can’t make it in business by maintaining a reasonable degree of ethics, find something else to do.”
about DONALD LEE SHEPPARD
Along with advocating for virtuous practices in the workplace, The Dividends Of Decency offers: • A comprehensive understanding of why Trump’s business model doesn’t work • A list of universal ethical quality constituents • Sheppard’s “Win-Win-Win” strategy as essential to business success • A pyramid structure illustrating the levels of corporate social responsibility • A workable definition of integrity for business leaders and entrepreneurs • Seven concrete steps to creating a meaningful code of ethics in the workplace • A list of dividends to be earned by promoting diversity in the workplace • Trends that promise hope for the future of American business

They have partnered with AFRIpads in Uganda, which trains women to work for themselves making and selling reusable pads. Each pair of underwear you purchase helps to fund this cause. This cause in turn give girls access to protection during their cycle to help prevent them from missing school. According to the article, Women can Bleed Green on alternet. org, a woman throws away 250 to 300 pounds of feminine hygiene products in her lifetime. In addition the Ocean Conservancy found that tampon applicators made up 2.2% of debris on U.S. coastlines.

Paul and Gary set a task for themselves. Paul wanted to build at nice tent and Gary wanted to build a house. The first day out, Gary was able to build his tent. It was a very nice tent to say the least. Gary on the other hand was busy leveling the ground for nearly a week. It took another two weeks for Gary to lay the foundation. Day after day, Gary labored upon the house. After a few weeks, Gary took notice of the ease of Paul’s life. He could come and go as he pleased while Gary had to work.
One day Paul came by and noticed that Gary was feeling a bit down because his project wasn’t happening quickly. After Gary expressed his frustration, Paul said, “Why don’t you just build a tent? It’s much easier.” Paul said, “You have a very nice tent and I’m happy for you; however, I don’t desire a tent. It is my desire to build a house.” Paul said, “I understand, but that being the case, you should not be down on yourself. By all logic, building a house requires far more time and effort than a tent.” I shared this story to make a point regarding expectations. We errantly measure our progress against others. If they are in the same market as we are, doing the same type of business that we are, then the comparison may be legitimate and we may need to make adjustments. However, that’s not usually the case. We have to realize that some businesses are far easier to build than others. Some businesses need repeat customers daily, while others may only serve the same customer once in five years or a lifetime. Understanding the type of business we’re in can save us a lot of frustration. How do you gain that understanding? You can start by doing research. Don’t stress about that! It doesn’t need to be a long drawn-out process. Talk to a coffee shop owner, clothing designer, realtor, etc. It will be time well spent and the understanding will work wonders. Mind your business. How else will you come to understand it?

We decided to go another way: we designed an opaque bottle, made with an industry-leading 20% recycled glass, to protect our scents. Big city ideas intertwined with all the at-home amenities you could ever need was married quite nicely here. The bathrobes were soft, the space looked as if it had never been disturbed. Being away from the other half for a business trip means I get to leave my towel on the floor if I wish. This is the Life of Riley. A sliding barn door separated myself from the bathroom and shower mess I had accumulated over a 3-day stay. The products were just so good I had to lather up often. The modern rainfall shower head may have also been a big part of why I could never make my dinner plans on time. The hot water never ran out and I made a mental note to keep an eye out for more of these properties in a city near my future work. This is how a good stay should be.

Lord Baltimore in downtown Baltimore is winning by proximity alone. Just a couple of blocks from Inner Harbor and 15 minutes from BWI airport, this historic hotel has proven that you don’t have to gut an old building to remodel. Lord Baltimore kept its dramatic 1920’s stair railings, gold carousel entry doors and original elevators—the “charm by aesthetic” is in the air. Lord Baltimore Hotel photographed by Marco Ricca

oused in a stunning French Renaissance building, the spacious lobby past check-in has Old World New York businessman written all over it—you get the feeling you’re on a luxury cruise, even if it’s just for a moment. The spell of Lord Baltimore is working.
A casual conversation next to the piano with a very pulled-together female traveler comes to mind. “It’s the Rubell Family that brought this sublime hotel back to life. The Rubells believe that the key to economic success of a city is dependent on its cultural relevance,” she shared with me before disappearing back into her French martini and Renaissance designs.

the Suite My arrival to pristine custom designed bed sheets and a dessert surprise in the mini fridge put a smile on my face. The modernist look is very becoming to your weary eyes. Grey and black hues dominate the space, the closet and safe were the perfect size for my mentionables and unmentionables. Like the perfect NY apartment, settling in on the higher floor was effortless. All sounds of downtown Baltimore become a low hum.
Views from the room were not disappointing and the hot water for my tub never ran out. The flat screen TV looked like a fun amenity if this weren’t a work trip. Don’t recall hearing a guest next door and would have thought I had the entire floor to myself had it not been for passing maids hard at work in the morning. It’s the old bones of buildings like these that are ideal for peace and quiet.

rust us at Ventre Magazine when we say that Jackson 20 knows your sweet spot. Attached to a quirky-upscale Alexandrian Hotel and sitting a crab cake’s throw from the Potomac River is Jackson 20 Restaurant— the perfect complimentary introduction to Old Town Alexandria. Purposely park 3-4 blocks behind the eatery. Strolling the King Street Mile with its up-close views of historic 1700’s era homes is reason enough to venture here—no matter how humid or cold the day. Equally charming to this neighborhood is Executive Chef James Hudson’s culinary technique and genuine appreciation for modern, upscale southern dishes. Start with the black skillet corn bread with green chili, corn and whipped honey butter. The dress code here is upscale casual and bucks tradition in decor only. The flavors of the hearty corn & pepper chowder with lump crab is everything a low energy conventiongoer needs. The artful mix of entrees means you may fill up before getting to the star of the table—the crab cake. But still, do try. My lovely host and super attentive server and even my busboy recommended such. Order a crab cake à la carte or choose a crab cake sandwich with apple smoked bacon and be the envy of the table. With my heart set on the buttermilk fried chicken with Parmesan truffle fries, coleslaw and hot sauce, the Texan in me thanked the food gods for bringing me here. We pledge our allegiance to return.

Red Herring is one of those local finds that makes you wish you lived nearby. Eagle Rock has always been a destination for off-the-grid hip, and thrill seekers new or old to the area will find their suburban lives filled with unique vintage finds, cooler haircuts and bellies pleasantly filled.
Eagle Rock
In harmony with Eagle Rock’s tucked away and edgy settings is Red Herring. Pastel pinks and dark colors bring vintage glamour to life and on full display in a charming two story space. Lusty comfort food cooked with soul is how you can sum up this perfectly captivating experience. Chef Dave Woodall (#chefcrush), and his wife Alexis Martin Woodall (#dreamerswin) have lots to be thankful for. There’s absolutely nothing criminal about the buttermilk fried chicken & waffles with maple syrup. What is criminal is not ordering the candied bacon. Crab cakes often come with a side sauce often ignored, but don’t dare make that mistake at Red Herring. We reminisced for 3 days afterwards about the monstrous Duroc pork chop with grilled peaches, hazelnut, cornbread mollica, basil and yogurt. Every dish is made from scratch with every savory note not going unnoticed. I’ve often been called a fast eater, but not at this place. This dinner getaway will remind you that eating out can be a luxury. A community jewel defines this space with genuine good vibes and sincere service flowing through the air. With rumors swirling about of a new locale in Downtown LA, we volunteer as Red Herring ambassadors.

VITA Italian Bar & Grill (Vita means “Life” in Italian) is an extremely unique eatery that is literally full of life and one you wouldn’t normally find attached to a hotel alongside the Interstate 10 Freeway. Hidden behind a roadside gas station is a gem that locals here are proud of, and as enthusiastic foodies, we were happy to make the short drive and see why the Yelp reviews were all a buzz. The parking is easy, the space is warm and bright, and the decor is witty and eclectic. The rolling mountains of the San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire seem to dance all at once from this particular spot. There is not a bad table in the house. Locals bond over re-imagined minestrone soup and an intriguing host of farm-to-table dishes made with tender loving care. They break long enough from their plates as you enter to see who else has discovered their new secret eatery. Local community is celebrated here with most ingredients sourced from Cal Poly Pomona farms nearby. Their appetizer and small-plate game is strong (calamari, yellow tail, octopus, fresh burrata and more). Our choice of the whole pig meatballs in a fire roasted tomato sauce, young basil, mozzarella and grilled focaccia made lifetime fans of us. But do save room for the main attractions.

We didn’t know we were mushroom ravioli lovers until Chef David Wolfskill presented us with his culinary take. Wild mushroom raviolis topped with shaved fontina and chives and layered on a bed of chianti shallots, black garlic, and porcini cream was harmonious and memorable. The raviolis were light and delicate and the multi-layered sauce was bright and flavorful. My guest opted for the chicken Marsala with forest mushrooms, herbs and mascarpone polenta. Every flavor profile was complete! Rest assure, our forks didn’t miss a bite of the locally-made cheesecake as it hit the table. We agreed that the “whole pig” pizza with braised shoulder, house meatball, pancetta, and mozzarella would travel back home easily. Couldn’t tell ya how it tasted the next day, as it didn’t make it through the night (and could have easily been consumed in the car ride home). To enjoy the sweet life with friends and family is a true passion for Italians--VITA Italian Bar & Grill is the perfect anchor for that mindset. VITA Italian Bar & Grill is destined to become more than just an accidental find, it’ll be reoccurring destination. Some things shouldn’t be kept to ourselves.

The Italian guest with me almost climbed into that wood oven with the pizza, the smells were that enticing and the cheese that welcoming. Hand-crafted pizzas with market-fresh ingredients is why LA Weekly calls this place “The Life of Pie.” Every bite makes a friend.

Gosh, this place feels like the pulse of Los Angeles. We entered street side through Delphine’s Restaurant and came into this old school oasis of Instagram-worthy colors and refined food fit for Hollywood royalty. The bartender said we just missed newly single Chris Pratt, but stand tall regardless, as this scene attracts palate-savvy men and women from all sides of Mother Earth. Another inducing, lusty factor is the avocado toast with pickled onions and cilantro on a toasted baguette with a dash of paprika. Add the garlic shrimp and thank your server repeatedly for suggesting such. The blackened fish with quinoa was perfectly seasoned and worthy of its own specialty shout out. When you encounter food this beautiful, you should speak about it. The palate-stimulating food comes from the culinary team of Delphine’s Restaurant, that chic eatery you just breezed through. If you valeted your car and just whisked in, then plan to stay and get familiar with the space. Living Room and Station Hollywood have their own bars that are warmly anchored next to each other. Step outside to Station Hollywood’s al fresco setting and find your light or clamor inside for the best seat in the house. Living Room and Delphine’s Restaurant (attached--main floor of The W Hotel) truly has the best people-watching scene that Hollywood has to offer.

The epitome of Southern CA living is seeing the renowned design influence of Frank Lloyd Wright as reflected in Hollyhock House with its panoramic views and picturesque setting in East Hollywood. When you see the wonderment of this setting—a unique combination of home and gardens—you will be astonished to learn that the lady of the house was not originally pleased with this masterpiece, which she commissioned back in 1919. Owner and oil heiress Aline Barnsdall subsequently handed over Hollyhock House to the City after a storied history. The self-guided tour is brief, but very much worth the gander. For safety issues, the entire home cannot be toured, but you will be captivated by the creative genius of Frank Lloyd Wright as you experience his early efforts to develop a unique style of architecture for Southern California, which he termed “California Romanza.” An on-site virtual tour is in the pipeline and the views from Barnsdall Art Park is worth the visit alone. Surrounded by a modern theater and art galleries, the Hollyhock House of today is coming closer to realizing its original purpose.
“Selecting a thirtysix acre site known as Olive Hill, Wright and Barnsdall worked together to develop a plan that included a home for Barnsdall and her young daughter, two secondary residences, a theater, a director’s house, a dormitory for actors, studios for artists, shops and a motion picture theater. But because of financial and artistic differences, only the main home and two secondary residences were built.”

I
In life, we suggest work meetings at your local art gallery or museum often. The Broad in Downtown LA was our creative host as we spent time with writer and public relations guru Denise Weaver. Dressed to thrill, Denise breezed in perfectly Cali-cool in red pants and a short sleeve designer top that lit up her face. How some people don’t break a sweat during these hot summer months is an enigma unto itself. If you didn’t know her, you’d mistake her for a model passing through town, much too chic to live anywhere near your simple existence. And you’d be right, Denise Weaver is native to the City of Angels and considers West Hollywood proper her home. Denise stays relevant, most recently dressing Gisele in her client’s designs during a press stop in Brazil. Her public relations firm Pistol & Stamen has created successes for a range of clients like Tahari, Diesel, Alexander McQueen, David Meister and Adrianna Papell to hundreds of placements on the Today show. If you’re crushed on a dress or gown as seen on any well-heeled morning news anchors or any number of film and TV starlets and harlots, chances are really good that it’s a fashion placement by her West Coast office. The name Pistol & Stamen comes from the reproductive parts of a flower, and like a pollinating seductress, the mischievous look Denise dropped on me as she came up the escalator explains the synergy of rising brands that make long-term commitments. Anyone looking for exposure— whether it be print, digital, or social media platforms—or celeb endorsements (which is just a smidge of what keeps Denise in fine feather) look to this tall drink of water for help.
Shrugging off the “white picket fence with two kids and a dog” scenario, Denise makes time for business like no other, and dabbles in real estate in her spare time. Denise shared as we pass Basquiat and Warhol paintings. This may be a peek into why Pistol & Stamen received a rolling credit for the Oscars alongside Dior—its untethered focus on where you focus, you will excel. If you miss Denise behind the scenes at premier events or oncamera taping various segments with EXTRA TV, it’s time to escape your bubble. When not growing careers locally, she takes time for herself, reading a book while in Rome or laughing with old friends in NYC over a few bottles of wine. “Rome is one of my favorite cities and I’ve been often. I love Thailand, Denmark, and Cuba, too.” But with steady eyes always on future opportunities, she claims “no matter where I am, I’m always thinking of my next steps. I like to keep things new. Getting out of the office and making personal connections around the world only benefits my roster.” It’s a life that is about results. Ventre gets a sense there’s no tolerance for divas in her office, where she keeps the temperature polite and sweet. It’s all about a disarming approach and getting to the core of who people are and what they need. If looking to find your tribe on the East or West Coast, it starts with risk takers like these. Denise Weaver is many steps ahead in that game. “It’s never a perfect time to launch something. Just make a plan and do it!”

Power lunch at The Henry on Robertson Blvd just got a lot more interesting, especially when your companion is Los Angeles native, Alana Sands. Only the lucky valet guys were able to see which Tesla or sports car she pulled up in, as I was indoors holding center court that warm summer day. This interview with Alana will not fall into the trappings of others. Moments after sitting down, the preconceived notions that life handed everything to this natural beauty is a common mistake. But don’t make that notion, I whispered to myself. She spoke of mixed Spanish roots, but it’s the Native American side of her that will resonate the most to anyone in view. Every feature accentuated her high cheekbones— her warm articulate words, her strong kindred presence. Unless you follow her Instagram or are one of her fitness coaches, you’re not going to believe she has three boys under the age of 15. “Working out first thing in the morning in front of my boys means the world to me. I want them to know a routine of whole health, and speaking it is not enough,” she chimed in just before her fish entree arrived. “My son Emerson noticed my abs on vacation this summer. ‘You work so hard for your abs, mommy.’ Look, what’s better than that?” A personalized state-of-the-art home gym doesn’t hurt either. But our higher self wants us to be prosperous, right? Then let’s continue. Discipline intertwined with tenderness seems to be a bit of her magic. The allure of women like these is definitely not lost on the gay male.

Alana’s truest overnight success story is Emerson Ryder Jewelry (named after her first two sons and inspiration). A luxury jewelry line that is extremely personal to the beholder. Fans include Michael Jordan, Jessica Alba, Madonna, Caitlyn Jenner and Rhea Wahlberg, to name a few. A 14K gold, ruby and diamond snake ring at $750 or a custom dog tag at $12,500 sounds lusty, merely by typing the words. VENTRE |

The price points get heavier than that, and that conversation with yourself, or your other half, should be in private. Local retailers range from Jaimie Geller Jewelry in the Pacific Palisades to Ciel Spa inside the SLS Hotel in LA. To say that her pieces connect with locals and purveyors of finer things is an understatement.
Alana Sands is recognizable from TLC shows like The Celebrity Plastic Surgeons of Beverly Hills or Plastic Wives. Miscast in this genre—I personal believe—Alana is that twinkle of charm you see on a host like Samantha Brown of Travel Channel’s Passport to Europe. Hollywood will get this one right. VENTRE TIP: We often notice sales on the Emerson Ryder site! Type in code name: CRUZ (her third son’s name) for select specials. Because special things come in 3’s. OUR STORY In 2014, two friends found themselves looking up at an elephant and something clicked. HOW WE HELP
Through strategic partnerships with organizations dedicated to making the world a better place for elephants, we make sure that a portion of every sale goes towards helping create a sustainable future where elephants thrive. By aligning ourselves with both global and localized grassroots operations, we aim to make a difference for elephants everywhere. While every elephant herd faces its own unique challenges, the tactics needed to overcome them all have one thing in common : humans working together. With partners on the ground wherever there are elephants, we aim to use our products and the lifestyle they inspire as a vehicle for real change.

WHY WE CARE
It’s estimated that there were once 7-10 million African elephants roaming the African Continent while around 200,000 Asian elephants lived in the forests and grasslands of Southern Asia. Sadly, due to habitat loss and human conflict, both of these populations have dwindled severely. From 2010 to 2012 alone, an estimated 100,000 elephants were poached for ivory. That’s essentially one elephant loss every 15 minutes—a 50 percent decline in population in the past 35 years. There are roughly 470,000 African Elephants left in the wild and less than 40,000 Asian elephants. The high rate of elephant deaths combined with their incredibly long gestation period (22 months) could lead to a world without wild elephants by 2050. With people being the #1 cause of this steady population decline, we feel that it is our duty to do what we can to bring it to an end. Together, we can create a sustainable future where elephants thrive.
