he benefits of massage are many, especially for Patty Flanagan, who returned to “wholeness” thanks to body work from certified therapists after her fifth heart attack and stroke in 2006. She has since owned and operated several schools for massage, and is currently the owner of the Kali Institute for Massage and Somatic Therapies in Ventura, which has educated massage therapists for 20 years. “The benefits are endless and span all aspects of body, mind and spirit,” Flanagan said. Some of the top physical benefits of massage include lengthening shortened muscles, breaking up adhesions in the muscles and connective tissue, and bringing fresh, nutrient-rich blood to the area to help the body heal naturally, said Abby Nielsen, academic director and therapist at the Kali Institute. Various techniques may be used to accomplish these things, Nielsen noted, such as pinning a muscle and gradually bringing it through its full range of motion to restore length both manually and neurologically. “Techniques such as cross-fiber friction literally break up areas where connective tissue has become stuck or fibrous,” Nielsen said. “Massage increases blood flow by physically moving blood around the body and as areas of adhesion are cleared, fresh blood is able to easily flow into areas that were once stuck and blocked off.” Bonnie Vice, owner of the The Massage Place (two Ventura locations) since 2005, is an expert on the benefits of massage “When it comes to well being, some of the benefits of massage: can lower stress, decrease chronic pain, improve sleep, relief from sore muscles, increase energy, strengthens immune system, release from emotional and physical tension,” Vice said. “Getting massages regularly will help keep a good balance between the body, mind, and spirit.” Nielsen agreed, adding that massage can also promote relaxation, reduce stress and anxiety, help regulate blood pressure, decrease inflammation, reduce pain and aid digestion. “We live in a world where we are chronically over-stimulated,” said Lisa Kroner, educator and therapist at the Kali Institute. “Too many tasks, too much driving, too much information — they all take their toll on the body,” said Kroner, noting that massage works to release muscle tension and improve circulation. “When these functions are improved, clients also benefit from increased immune function, improved digestive function, better sleep patterns and more energy.” The biggest misunderstanding about massage is that one session fixes all your pains and knots, and that you did one thing or action that caused the pain, Flanagan noted. According to her, tension builds on a daily and hourly basis, and is caused by a multitude of factors, including stress, diet, inactivity, misuse and overuse. As a result, our bodies adapt to new/ old stressors, creating chronic holding patterns and shortening of muscles. “If left unattended, this tension develops into pain,” Flanagan explained. “The reality is that for chronic pain, consistency is the key to lengthening the duration of relief. Both she and her husband are doctors of chiropractic, board certified in integrative medicine and certified functional medicine practitioners. ore and more women these days are embracing the pinup look, which combines the youth and innocence of the ’40s and ’50s with the sex appeal and strength of today’s feminism, according to Liz Burge, owner and stylist at Bombshell Boutique in Ventura. She describes this look as “classic beauty meets tattoos and vamp hairstyles,” and the key to pinup fashion “is taking pride in one’s appearance, pride in being a woman and not being afraid to be yourself.” “But it’s more than just fashion,” Burge said. “It truly is a lifestyle and a state of mind.” While there is something to be said about dressing comfortably, she said she’s finding more and more women who want to embrace the powerful and sexy women they are. “They’re tired of the sweat shirts and yoga pants,” Burge said. “They want to take time to invest in their natural beauty.” In addition, the pinup world is all-inclusive. “You can be a woman who loves to show off your curves, or you can be a Rosie the Riveter, the type of gal who likes to get dirty,” Burge said. “It’s all about owning what makes you beautiful, and taking pride in who you are.” The pinup look includes a variety of fashions, generally derived from the ’40s and ’50s youth culture, from flirty dresses, pencil skirts, peasant tops, seamed stockings and tight sweaters to T-shirts, cuffed jeans and bandanas. A great example of the pinup look is someone like Dita Von Teese, Burge noted. “Footwear could include kitten heels to cowboy boots, maybe even Keds-type tennis shoes,” she said. “Put this all together with some vintage jewelry and red polished nails, winged eyeliner, and maybe a classic updo like victory rolls, and you’ll be able to grace the pages of a calendar.” For beginners or others who’d like to attain the pinup look, Burge said that YouTube has great hair and makeup tutorials. Struggling with mental health or substance use disorders? Tribe’s Clinical Director Nancy Swanson, better known as “The Ninja Therapist,” recommends these five tips for choosing the right treatment program: 1. Look for a personal touch. How much time does a program clinician spend getting to understand your story and history before you commit? 2. Addiction and mental health disorders take a heavy toll on families, and everyone needs to learn new ways of relating. Great programs have full family participation, so ask what the program offers families.

4. Addiction is powerful and early recovery can be rough. Medications are available to curb cravings, allowing the addict/alcoholic to more easily focus on the business of recovery. Insure the program supports “MAT,” or medication-assisted treatment for an unspecified duration (everyone’s journey is individual). 5. Alcohol and drugs are not the problem - they have been the alcoholic/addict’s solution. At the core of most addiction is trauma, so let’s work through that and move forward in a joyful and productive life. Ask about trauma-informed treatment.

3. Assess the level of positive peer community. What steps does the program take in creating a nurturing, honest, and supportive community environment. Sobriety and joy rarely flourish in isolation.
