For brides-to-be, dress trends highlighted during bridal fashion week included embellishments like three-dimensional flowers, feathers and crystals. Many women are also gravitating toward the deep V-shape plunging neckline to flatter their upper bodies while giving the look of an elongated frame. In continuing trends, puffy bridal sleeves are back, including off-the-shoulder styles. At Dressed by Angel in Camarillo, where owner Angel Kevorkian makes customized wedding gowns, brides-to-be are requesting “a more special, intimate kind of dress,” said Kevorkian. “This is a pre-generation way of sewing and customizing — my mom made my dress and I made my daughter’s dresses.” This year, her customers are requesting remakes of their mothers’ wedding dresses, or using part of their mothers’ or grandmothers’ wedding dress to incorporate into their gowns of choice. In these designs, “I’m mostly adding sleeves or using part of the fabric from mom’s or grandma’s dress,” Kevorkian said. In other offerings, “I also have off-the-rack dresses that I can re-design to make whatever the bride wants.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

Kevorkian also specializes in making customized dresses for mothers of the brides-to-be. “I have a big selection of dresses for mothers of the brides that are really hard for them to find,” she said. “Some moms are actually stressed out because they may have a dress, but they don’t like their arms showing, and want to change it around.” At Mission Tuxedos in Ventura, slimand ultra-slim-fit suits and tuxedos have been in fashion for the last several years, “and show no sign of losing popularity,” said Jim Vasquez, owner. For instance, the Sterling Wedding Suit by designer Michael Kors — which features a slim-fit coat and matching modern slim-fit pants with an adjustable waist — is made with lightweight Venetian Super 130’s wool fabric, giving it a comfortable fit. In new selections for the men, “indigo blue suits for grooms are a new popular trend in 2019,” Vasquez said. Mission Tuxedos also offers the classic black suit, four shades each in grey and blue, as well as a suit in tan. ver the past couple of years — and leading into 2019 — there have been a couple of hot food trends for weddings, from comfort foods such as street-style tacos to formal and elegant plated dishes like grilled prime filet mignon. At DJ’s California Catering in Ventura, “What’s been a popular trend is comfort food — things that people enjoy when they go out for dinner in general,” said Doug Biggs, president. One of the foremost among them has been street tacos, “bringing what you see out there

with food trucks to weddings, with people getting away from the traditional buffet.” The tacos come with traditional side dishes, like rice and beans, “and we do a Southwest salad with grilled corn, black beans, tortilla strips and chipotle dressing,” Biggs said. “And from there, guests move onto a full salsa bar with a variety of freshly made salsas, guacamole and fresh limes, with grated Mexican-style cheese.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

These dishes are not only delicious, he said, “It’s a lot of fun to go through and build your taco the way you’d like it.” Another food trend this wedding season goes in the opposite direction, with “very elegant” plated dinner service. For instance, a first course of choice at DJ’s California Catering is a lobster salad with pomegranate poached pear, organic grapefruit Supremes, locally grown Haas avocados and citrus vinaigrette. “So we’re kicking it up from the standard garden salad to doing something with seafood,” Biggs said. This is followed with a popular main course of grilled prime filet mignon, “and we’ll kick it up with a selection of our locally sourced wild mushrooms and a nice light au jus; then we’ll pair that with another great seafood entrée. And typically that’s a wild salmon, and rather than a sauce, we’ll top with fresh mango salsa.” When it comes to desserts, Biggs said that many couples are showcasing just a small, ceremonial cake as opposed to a traditional cake, and serving up dessert bars with bite-sized treats such as miniature pies, cupcakes, brownies, chocolate-dipped strawberries and lemon bars. Other desserts, such as those made by Scofield Catering and Management in Ventura, include amaretto cake, éclairs, flourless cake, raspberry ganache and hazelnut crunch cake. “Another trend we’re seeing with dessert along with the street side tacos is a churro bar,” Biggs said. “We’re pairing that with molten chocolate for dipping, freshly-whipped cream, candy sprinkles and a variety of jams.” Another huge trend for 2019 is a menu with gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options for wedding guests. White Sage Catering in Ojai, for instance, offers vegan, gluten-free, paleo and vegetarian menus. “There’s so many diets out there — it’s a given that we have to include this,” Biggs said. “On our upscale menu, we’ll do our pistachio-encrusted eggplant with lentils — and that particular menu is both vegan and gluten-free. They want the day to reflect them and what they are about.” For tabletop décor, “anything in the fern or palm family is very popular right now — less flowers and more greenery is the trend,” she said. “People are trying to make their weddings feel more homey, like it’s their own furniture and doesn’t feel like a rental,” Acevedo said. In the past, “it seems like everybody was doing the standard colors, white or off-white, so we decided to kick it up a notch and started bringing velvet in blues, grays or pinks. Let this checklist be your guide for the perfect wedding NINE MONTHS AND EARLIER m Announce your engagement. Select a date for your wedding. m Hire a professional wedding consultant. m Determine the type of wedding you want: location, formality, time of day, number of guests, etc. m Determine budget and how expenses will be shared. m Develop a record-keeping system for payments made. m Consolidate all guest lists: bride’s, groom’s, bride’s family, groom’s family, and organize as follows: 1) those who must be invited 2) those who should be invited 3) those who would be nice to invite m Select and reserve ceremony site. m Select and reserve your officiant. m Select and reserve reception site. m Select and order your bridal gown and headpiece. m Determine your color scheme. m Buy a calendar and note all important activities: showers, luncheons, parties, get-togethers, etc. m Order passport, visa or birth certificate, if needed for your honeymoon or marriage license. m Select and book photographer. m Select maid of honor, best man, bridesmaids and ushers (approx. one usher per 50 guests).

SIX TO EIGHT WEEKS BEFORE m Mail invitations. Include accommodation choices and a map to assist guests in finding the ceremony and reception sites. m Maintain a record of RSVPs and all gifts received. Send thank-you notes upon receipt of gifts. m Determine hair style and makeup. m Schedule to have your hair, makeup and nails done the day of the wedding. m Finalize shopping for wedding day accessories such as toasting glasses, ring pillow, guest book, etc. m Set up an area or a table in your home to display gifts as you receive them. m Have your wedding portrait taken. m Change name and address on drivers license, social security card, insurance policies, subscriptions, bank accounts, memberships, etc. m Select and reserve wedding attire for groom, ushers, father of the bride and ring bearer. m Select a guest book attendant. m Mail invitations to rehearsal dinner. m Get blood test and health certificate. m Obtain marriage license. m Plan a luncheon or dinner with your bridesmaids. Give them their gifts at that time or at the rehearsal dinner. m Find “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a six pence (or shiny penny) for your shoe.” m Finalize your menu, beverage and alcohol order.

TWO TO SIX WEEKS BEFORE m Confirm ceremony details with your officiant. m Arrange final fitting of bridesmaids’ dresses. m Have final fitting of your gown and headpiece. m Finalize rehearsal dinner plans; arrange seating and write names on place cards, if desired. m Make final floral selections. m Make a detailed timeline for your wedding party. m Make a detailed timeline for your service providers. m Confirm details with all service providers, including attire. Give them a copy of your wedding timeline. m Finalize addressing and stamping announcements. m Decide if you want to form a receiving line. If so, determine when and where to form the line.

m Contact guests who haven’t responded. m Pick up rings and check for fit. m Meet with photographer and videographer confirm special moments you captured. m Meet with musicians and confirm music to be played during special events such as first dance. m Remind bridesmaids and ushers of when and where to pick up their wedding attire. m Determine ceremony seating for special guests. It will help during the receiving line and reception. m Have the Post Office hold your mail while you are away on your honeymoon.

THE REHEARSAL DAY m Put suitcases in getaway car. m Give best man the officiant’s fee and any other checks for service providers. Instruct him to deliver these checks the day of the wedding. m Arrange for someone to bring accessories such as flower basket, ring pillow, guest book and pen, toasting glasses, cake cutting knife and napkins to the ceremony and reception. m Arrange for someone to return rental items such as tuxedos, slip and cake pillars after the wedding. m Provide each member of your wedding party with a detailed schedule of events for the wedding day. m Review ceremony seating with ushers.
