Tim and Ashley Coates, owners of Real Cheap Sports in Downtown Ventura, offer their advice on the “must-haves” that both children and adults should take with them on camping excursions to have the best possible experience. HOOKED Pier fishing, fun summer pastime BY MICHAEL SULLIVAN

W

hile summertime is the season for exploring, learning new things and keeping up with traditions of adventure, such as camping and traveling to exotic places, one beautiful aspect of living in Ventura County may often be overlooked: pier fishing. With two piers (Port Hueneme and Ventura) to choose from, it’s one peaceful and often rewarding pastime worth trying out. And one does not need a fishing license to enjoy the bounty. Fred Monzano of Santa Paula comes to the Ventura pier once or twice a week, hoping to hook leopard shark or halibut, which he noted was a rare feat, having last caught leopard shark in January. He has yet to catch habilut. “I use sardines for bait but I am trying to catch halibut for dinner,” Manzano said. Nevertheless, hanging out in the cool breeze, taking in the salt air, chatting with friends and passersby and enjoying the sparkling ocean is its own reward. He had actually been sharing a sushi mackerel and mussel snack with some friends at the time of this interview. He said that the most common fish to catch are mackerel and crab, as witnessed when, a little further up the pier, a family pulled a net out of the ocean with two crabs wriggling around. Sabiki lures and jigs are the most common bait for pier fishing. But there is a whole gamut of rods, bait and tackle to choose from. But if there is any consistent advice when it comes to pier fishing — or fishing anywhere — that would be patience, persistence and variety. If one tactic isn’t working, try something else. Fishing isn’t for everyone, but for those who enjoy it — it will provide many hours of summertime pleasure.
