AMERICA’S TEACHING ZOO
UNDERWOOD FAMILY FARMS
America’s Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College, which is home to monkeys, raccoons, lions, rabbits, lemurs, turtles, snakes, spiders and more, is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is a unique opportunity for visitors to observe and interact with wild animals while learning about conservation from the students enrolled in the Exotic Animal Training and Management program, said Mara Rodriguez, who works on the zoo’s operations staff. “The animal family includes birds, mammals and reptiles from around the world and our student population comes from all over the world as well,” she said. Animal presentations are offered at noon and 2 p.m., “and summer is a great time to join us for tiger splash at 3:30 p.m.” Animals and their handlers walk around the zoo’s grounds throughout the day, giving guests the opportunity to learn more about the animals and take photos. There are also interactive stations, with touchable items and activities. America’s Teaching Zoo is located at 7075 Campus Road in Moorpark. General admission is $9 for adults; $7 for children and seniors; free for children under age 2. For more information, visit www.moorparkcollege.edu/teaching-zoo or call 805-378-1441.
Pot-bellied pigs, goats, rabbits and ponies are some of the resident animals at Underwood Family Farms. The Farm Animal Center features educational exhibits, a sandbox for children to play in, and haystacks to
climb, as well as critters such as donkeys, sheep, chickens, ducks, birds, cows and horses. Children less than four feet tall and weighing 75 pounds can also ride a live pony that’s led around a fenced enclosure by an attendant. The Farm Animal Center is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $5 Monday through Friday for children over age 2; and $8 Saturday and Sunday for children over age 2. Entry for children under age 2 is free. The weekend admission cost includes a tractor-drawn wagon ride around the farm, an animal show and the opportunity to pick your own fruits and vegetables from their fields. Additional activities include panning for gold, a moon bounce, electric train and mini tractors, and petting and feeding animals in the barnyard. Underwood Family Farms is located at 3370 Sunset Valley Road in Moorpark. For more information, call 805-529-3690 or visit underwoodfamilyfarms.com/animal-center-moorpark.

CAMPING COMFORTS Five must-haves when enjoying nature
When it comes to kids and parents camping together, the goal is always
safety and comfort – and having the right gear when experiencing the outdoors will provide a much greater chance for a successful trip. Tim and Ashley Coates, owners of Real Cheap Sports in Downtown Ventura, offer their advice on the “must-haves” that both children and adults should take with them on camping excursions to have the best possible experience.
TOP 5 KIDS ITEMS 1. Kid-size backpack filled with a headlamp and water bottle, sunhat, warm layer and wind-rain jacket. 2. Frisbee: Promotes good exercise, hand-eye coordination and group activity. 3. Hammock: Relaxing and promotes naps. 4. Trekking poles: “Our seven year old daughter walks a lot further without complaints” Ashley Coates said.
TOP 5 ADULT ITEMS 1. Camping pillow: For a comfortable car ride and car naps, when sitting in a camp chair, or in bed in your tent. 2. Camp blanket: For if it’s colder than expected at night. 3. Camp chair: Place a camp chair just outside your tent door to put our shoes on and off, in the kitchen to cook and eat, in climbing belay areas, and by the campfire. 4. First aid kit, Dr. Bronner’s Camp, insect repellent and sunscreen. 5. Water/shower shoes: For camp showers and water play. “Plan a trip now,” Ashley Coates said. “Don’t wait for your kids to get older, be easier in the car, walk farther, sleep better. Just go. And, just because one trip is challenging, doesn’t mean the next one will be.” By Alicia Doyle
5. Handkerchiefs: Helpful for keeping cool by wetting; useful to blow noses or clean scrapes

Rules of the waves local surfer gives tips, advice on places to surf, staying safe on the beach BY CHIPPER BRO BELL
W
hen you first arrive in Ventura you can’t help but notice the beauty (unless it’s super foggy or at night) and “royalty”: rolling hills, the historic downtown, delicious food and great local beer and wine. The Ventura River is on the westside and the Santa Clara River is to the south; both spill into the great Pacific Ocean. Channel Islands National Park is poised right off the Ventura Coast, celebrating whales, dolphins, seabirds and other wildlife. (Check in with Island Packers for details on how to get out to the islands.) Ventura has been called one of the best places to live in the world because of that beauty and lifestyle, and it is prized for the diverse environment that surrounds it. Ventura’s beaches are world class and unique. If you’re looking for a fun beach escape, here are a few suggestions. Kiddy Beach is a favorite for parents and is located at the end of Spinnaker Drive. Pierpont Beach, at the end of Seaward Avenue, has lovely sandy beaches and fun surf and is great for walking and beach combing at low and medium tides. Ventura is also one of the best places to surf in California because of its diversity of surf breaks. From beach breaks to point breaks to reefs and coves, Ventura has it all. Swell height, intervals and direction determine where you are going to surf. Ventura’s own point break is called C Street, also known as “Surfers Point,” and is a great beginner, intermediate and advanced point break. It has a rocky shore and a shallow seagrass bottom with rocks. C Street is a favorite for west and south swells and is good for long boarding. South of the Historic Ventura Pier is State Beach and a bit further south you will find Pierpont Beach. Pierpont Beach boasts sandy beaches and jetties. Surf is great with a south summer swell. Some river rocks are sprinkled and tossed with the ebb and flow of the tides. This beach also makes for great low-tide beachcombing. North of Ventura you will find Emma Wood State Beach, a world-class surf break

with three shallow reefs. Further up Highway 1 is Mondo’s Beach, which is a favorite for beginning surfers. Hobson County Park is great for surf camping. Whatever beach you are going to visit, you will need to be aware of your surroundings. Know where you park. If you are transporting boards from car to beach, or are on a highway or promenade, be sure to look out for pedestrians and bikes. When you arrive on the beach, check the sand and look for debris and sharp objects, especially glass. Along the shore line look for inshore trenches and be aware of the shifting tides and currents. Find a landmark — the best landmarks are in front of lifeguards and lifeguard towers — and stay in and around your landmark. If the current is flowing from the west, it will be moving down the coast. If it is a south swell, it will be moving up the coast. Watch children and beginning swimmers closely. The Ventura Coastline also has rip cur-
rents. A rip current looks like discolored water, with sand and foam in it; it moves away from shore. The way you handle yourself in a rip current: NEVER PANIC and STAY CALM; tread water, float on your back, breath, smile and swim parallel to the beach and at a 45-degree angle. If you are in need of a surf lesson, there are many qualified surfs schools in the area. Make sure that the staff is lifeguard and/or CPR First Aid certified. If it is a child or group lesson, make sure the ratio of students to instructor is 4:1. Whether you are beachcombing, surfing world-class waves, hiking in the coastal rolling hills or swimming in the wild rivers, being prepared is key. Understanding your surroundings, recognizing rip currents and playing to your abilities will promise an amazing and safe summer enjoying Ventura’s royalty. Chipper is a local surfer in Ventura.
