Established in 1953, the Guelph & District Human Resources Professionals Association (GDHRPA) was created to promote the value of people in achieving business goals that result in organizational success. With just over 500 professionals and students from all sectors, including retail, manufacturing, health care, and financial, GDHRPA provides resources and education to Human Resources Professionals within Guelph and the surrounding area. The GDHRPA recently announced the recipients of its fourth annual Employer of Distinction Awards. “The Awards were developed out of a desire to promote the importance of Human Resource Management in business success, and to offer the opportunity for both the community and Chapter members to learn from best practices that we know are happening right here in the area–some of which are driven by the professionals
within the GDHRPA,” says Melanie Hill, GDHRPA Employer of Distinction Committee Chair. “We wanted to demonstrate how positive human resource management practices can have a real impact on business outcomes.” Every January, two businesses are awarded in the categories of: an employer with less than 200 employees, and an employer with 200 or more employees. Business must show how their human resources initiatives have been implemented; the measurable impact made on business indicators such as goals, objectives, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction; and the resulting measurement of employee workplace satisfaction through recruitment, retention, engagement, and performance. “There are so many examples of HR practices a business could implement to make them an outstanding employer,” says Erin Murray,
GDHRPA Employer of Distinction Committee Member. “They are often the little things like pot luck lunches, thank you cards and flexible hours, or it can be the large scale things like innovative compensation plans, and robust health, safety and wellness programs. Ultimately, it is the ongoing practice of valuing employees and this can happen on a daily basis.” The 2012 Employer of Distinction recipient in the large employer category is NGF Canada Ltd., and Hospice Wellington was recognized in the small employer category. Both organizations are commended for their person-centered approach, and fostering environments that encourage employee health and wellness, communication, flexibility and support–resulting in an engaged workforce that has allowed these organizations to achieve significant success in their operational and organizational goals.

Representing the first not-for-profit in the region to win the award, HR practices at Hospice Wellington have increased employee engagement and commitment to the organization. Staff, volunteers and the Board of Directors have supported the development of the organization over the past 31years. “I cannot tell you how thrilled we are to win this award and how much it means to us to recognize the hard work we have all put in to make our organization an exceptional place to work and volunteer,” says Rosslyn Bentley, Executive Director at Hospice Wellington. Hospice Wellington has very low absence rates, less than 2% compared to a healthcare comparable industry standard of 12%. There have been no workplace injuries since opening in May 2010. Hospice Wellington has one of the very highest rates of productivity – cont’d on pg 7
