THIS IS HOW THE WIND SHIFTS

The “This Is How The Wind Shifts” tour came through to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Approximately 400-500 attendees braved the snow and found themselves at Mill City Nights. Though it wasn’t the massive turnout I had expected (probably because of the weather), the show had some really awesome moments. Glass Cloud kicked off the night with five songs before ISSUES took the stage. It was apparent that the majority of the crowd was

there to see ISSUES (or maybe just Tyler Carter). Regardless, the band put on an incredible show and I highly recommend checking them out on their upcoming tour with A Day To Remember. Crowd response was good throughout the nights with lots of moshing and even a wall-of-death during SECRETS’ set. Silverstein did themselves justice at the end of the night. Amazing sums up the evening.

album reviews Awful Adequate Average Appealing Amazing

THE BLACKOUT

‘START THE PARTY’

‘Start The Party’ is the title of The Blackout’s fourth studio album, and it’s clear to see why. Opening track, and first single, “Start The Party” serves as a template for the rest of the album; heavy guitars, screeching vocals, and straightforward memorable lyrics all prove recurring features of the record. Second single “Running Scared” is another highlight, its catchy chorus and melodic guitar riffs signal it out as ideal rock club fodder. “You” is a stand out track, taking a turn towards the down-tempo with acoustic guitars and languishing vocals, whilst “Free Yourself” proves that the band still maintain their heavier side. Closer “Throw It All Away” showcases more melodic traits, multi-layered vocals mixing with ease. All in all, it’s nothing too challenging. Simply pop infused rock music, purpose built to get you moving.

BY: JESSICA GOODMAN TO KILL A KING

‘CANNIBALS WITH CUTLERY’

‘Cannibals With Cutlery’ is the debut album from To Kill A King. This 13-track release is filled with upbeat piano melodies and soothing vocals. Emotive lyrics that take us on a journey while the percussion of each song acts as a strong foundation. “Cold Skin” which is to be the first single, is a fine-tuned mixture of elements, with memorable riffs, repetitive backing vocals and a popular rock-like chorus. “Gasp” showcases the bands desire to combine instruments, stopping and starting with orchestral strings which branch out into a slow tempo line of drums. “Rays” is a refreshing track with chugging riffs and contagious energetic vibes while progressional track, “Letters To My Lover” closes the album with a vocal whisper of repetition.

BY: BEKKA COLLINS

UNIFIER

‘COLORADO’

‘Colorado’ is a collection of 12 tracks from the four-piece known as Unifier who were previously Future Ghosts. This release is filled with heavy musical layers but still remains fun and pop-punk like with gripping riffs, compelling beats and well executed vocals. “Bitter? Better.” displays a captivating melody intertwined with an overused structure, but one that is fun to work with. “Single Room” experiments with a larger range of elements and the addition of simplistic but poppy gang vocals have you wanting to join in within seconds. “Shadows” has already gained the band some praise with it’s upbeat and powerful nature and the album comes to a close with “#41” which rounds off the album perfectly. A stellar edition to your music library and an album you won’t want to miss out on.

BY: BEKKA COLLINS

TEGAN AND SARA ‘HEARTTHROB’

The album title ‘Heartthrob’ epitomises the new sound Tegan and Sara have subtly and progressively developed into – tracks with mature heartfelt lyrics but set to synth-pop riffs. “Closer”, the first single, is an immediately infectious hit which resembles Robyn, the Swedish pop star. “I Was A Fool” embraces an 80’s dance feel, as Tegan sings about a past relationship. The whole album focuses on the highs and lows of love and “Love They Say” tackles the subject head on. “Drove Me Wild” and “Goodbye, Goodbye” are two highlights of the album. The sister duo have come from folk-rock origins to a new, more dance and pop influenced genre that compliments them well. This album reflects a promising future for this duo.

BY: HELEN WHITTLE THE GLASS CHILD

‘I’D LIKE TO REMAIN A MYSTERY’

‘I’d Like To Remain A Mystery’ is a fourteen track album that rings true to its title, as mysterious vibes and electronic experiments feature within this collective of songs. Reflective and somewhat movie-like, The Glass Child has found her comfort zone among simplistic yet catchy guitar riffs and almost haunting piano melodies. Yet a lot of the tracks seem to follow a similar format making it difficult to hear when one song starts and another ends. “Somewhere I Belong” sounds like a different artist and focuses on the storytelling of lyrics, while “Oceans” showcases what The Glass Child does best. Closing the album is “Stuck In My Mind” which is a heavier track with more interesting elements and diversity. For the most part this album is sweet-sounding yet partially predictable, but a definite good effort with occasional glimpses of genius.

AN INTERVIEW WITH

BEFORE YOU EXIT WORDS BY KYLE KOTAJARVI & NICOLE THOMAS

BEFORE YOU EXIT are

a pop rock three-piece from Orlando, Florida. These brothers are just in their teens but despite their age they are already impressing fans across the globe with their mature approach to music and authentic talent. Their name, inspired by the sentiment “make a difference before you exit” shows the band are willingy to work hard continuously until they get to the top. Currently supporting Action Item on their Resolution Tour, we got a chance to speak with the boys to find out how things were going on tour and what they had planned for the future. Please introduce yourselves and your roles in the band. Connor: Hey, I'm Connor. I'm 19 years old, I sing and play guitar and piano. Toby: Hey I'm Toby. I'm 15 years old. I play guitar, piano and I sing. Riley: I'm Riley. I'm 17 years old. I sing for the band and we're all brothers. For someone who's never heard of your music before, how would you describe it? Connor: It's pop from a rock perspective. Energetic and upbeat on some songs, and a little slower on others. Recently a lot of music has been transitioning from physical copies to digital. How do you guys feel about that? Connor: I would say us for it's honestly however people can get our music is all that really matters to us.

I think digital is a really cool thing. Riley: There's always gonna be something about having an actual CD and being able bring that CD with you that’s important. Is it harder for you guys being a younger band? Are your parents supportive? Connor: People have asked us that before, but I think it's awesome being a younger band because a lot of people don't really know what to expect. It's always cool to be kind of the young guys. It's great to tour with people we look up to. Toby is like 15. Most kids Toby's age are still like drinking juice boxes and playing in sandboxes. Toby: I still do that (laughs). Connor: And yeah, our parents are really supportive. Our dad is actually on tour with us right now. If you guys could collaborate with any other artist, who would it be? Riley: John Mayer. Connor: Justin Bieber. Riley: Maybe Adam Levine. Connor: That would be awesome. Toby: I think Bruno Mars would be good too. Favorite artist you guys have toured with? Riley: All Time Low and Allstar Weekend. We haven't done too many tours but we’re lucky to have played with both of these bands. How do you guys go about picking your setlist? Connor: We always play our new songs.

Riley: We tend to start with an upbeat song. Slower songs in the middle. Then upbeat at the end. What’s the craziest gift you guys have received from a fan? Riley: Someone actually named a star after us, so there’s a “Before You Exit” star now. Connor: It’s cool and really unique. Riley: Connor also got an autographed Katy Perry poster. So you guys have a lot of female fans, how do you feel about that?

Riley: Rebecca Black “Friday” Toby: I would say “Call Me Maybe”, but I really like that song, so it’s not embarrassing. Connor: We’re all into Top 40 stuff. If you could go to any other country, where would you guys pick? Connor: We’d wanna go to the Phillipines. You guys just came out with a new single “I Like That”. Where did you guys record that?

Connor: It’s awesome. We can’t complain. Toby: We kind of wish we had guy fans (laughs) Connor: Females are the best.

Connor: We produced it ourselves with these other two guys in Los Angeles, and also at our house. The album was done in a mixture of my bedroom and also their studio out in LA.

Yeah you guys need some mosh pits and some wall-of-death action.

What are you guys planning this summer?

Connor: Oh the girls go nuts man. Circle pits…(laughs). No just kidding. That’d be pretty crazy though.

Connor: This summer we hope to be touring and stuff. We’re still trying to figure out plans and everything. We wanna push some songs to radio and see how they do there.

What are some embarrassing songs I would find on your iPod?

FEATURE

THE JEZABELS The Jezabels are a four piece indie, alternative rock band from Sydney, Australia. Consisting of vocalist Hayley Mary, guitarist Samuel Lockwood, drummer Nic Kaloper and keyboardist Heather Shannon. Since their formation in 2007 this talented quartet have been creating music which demands to be listened to. While they have a range of musical influences the band simply refer to their sound as “intensindie”. In 2009 The Jezabels independently released ‘The Man is Dead’, the first in a trilogy of EPs, which was followed by ‘She’s So Hard’ and ‘Dark Storm’. Melodramatic yet uplifting, the band have an ability to create irresistible pop hooks, and each release is as impressive as the last. The absence of a bass player is not missed either as keyboardist Shannon simultaneously contributes with pounding keys and tinkling melodies. Along with the bold drumming from Kaloper and Lockwood’s melodic guitar work, it’s astonishing how The Jezabels produce such a dramatic sound that you can’t help but want more of. Winning ‘Best Independent Release’ at the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) music awards in 2012, The Jezabels’ full length album ‘Prisoner’ is their long awaited debut. Released on September 16th 2011 it is more than a captivating collection of songs, telling a story as the album unfolds.

lower and upper register. Her powerful voice has often been compared to the likes of Kate Bush, yet there is something so unique and mesmerising about her talent that it’s difficult to come to any solid comparison. The Jezabels’ past experience in the studio has resulted in ‘Prisoner’ being their best work yet, and judging by their constant appreciation for their craft, we are expecting big things from their next release. After touring throughout the majority of 2012, perfecting their live shows and creating a bold stage presence, the band released their first live DVD which seems to be impressing fans across the globe. While it may seem like The Jezabels will disappear for a while, we have a feeling that after their well deserved break they will be back working, producing something more impressive than our imaginations could conjure up. We look forward to watching the band progress over the rest of this year, and suggest you follow along with their journey too.

INTERVIEW

HALFWAY TO HOLLYWOOD

Halfway to Hollywood are a pop-rock trio from Vancouver, BC. With Grant Walker as guitarist and lead vocalist, Brenden White on bass and vocals, and Roman Zugarazo on drums, the three create a very charismatic group of musicians to look out for in 2013. Brenden White took some time to sit down with us and reflect on the bands most recent tour, upcoming EP, and musical influences.

BY: KAYLEE SMOKE

So you guys recently got home from your cross Canada tour. How was that compared to previous tours? Colder! There were slightly better turn-outs. Relatively speaking, you know? We don’t have legions of fans, but it was a lot better this time. Last time we lost money, this time we didn’t lose anything. It was nice seeing a lot of old faces and seeing new ones. We got to crash at a lot of people’s houses this time around, so that was good. If you could put together a tour with any bands you want, who would you put on it? A dream tour would be us getting to play with All Time Low, Marianas Trench, Simple Plan, Allstar Weekend, The Summer Set, The Cab... bands like that. We wanted to tour with Fighting For Ithica from Vancouver, they’re good dudes. Recently you guys have released your new single “Green Lights” on iTunes, how does your 2013 release differ from your 2011 EP release ‘Speechless’? Grant and I wrote the old EP, and we wrote the new EP as well. The last EP we recorded all ourselves in our own studio-type thing and we didn’t really know what we were doing. We got someone else to mix it, at least. This time we worked with a producer, Danny Craig, who plays drums in a band called Default. He’s an awesome dude and works really hard. We wrote 30 to 40 snippets, half songs, choruses and stuff. We did full band demos with about twelve songs. The first batch, there was one song he liked. The rest he didn’t, so we went back and wrote another eight songs. Brought those to him, he liked one or two. We did it again. He taught us a few things about lyrics and structure. It was definitely a matter of being more consistent. Our old songs, I don’t want to say we got lucky - but it was kind of like “oh, it happened. It worked out well for us,” but now I feel like we have a new plan to have more control over it. How far into recording the new EP have you gotten? Any news on a release date or a name for it? It’s all done, we’re just waiting to do photos. The EP’s called ‘Party Like It’s Prom Night’. We were hoping to release it in mid to late February on iTunes, and then a CD release right before the next tour.

A lot of bands have dream producers that they’d love to work with, is there anyone you would like to work with? I’d like to say Danny’s the man. He’s awesome. He literally spent three months putting his time towards us. I still text and call him all the time. I talk to him about everything but I’d like to work with Andrew Goldstein, from The Friday Night Boys. I think Grant would probably agree with that. That would be a dude I’d really like to work with. He’s done a lot of producing work since the band broke up and I always thought his songs were really awesome. You guys seem very hands-on with where you’re heading as a band. Have you set up any goals you’d like to work towards? We’re trying to tour as much as possible, maybe get into the USA by next year. Ideally, we’d like to build up enough of a fan base in Canada, or wherever, so that we could open up and get on some tours with some bigger bands. Release music and get signed if the the opportunity is a good fit. That’s kind of what we’re looking for, just to advance ourselves and see what we can do. Do you think the power of social networking could help you get there faster? I think about ninety percent of any success that we’ve had is due to social networking. We have kind of neglected YouTube in the past, but we’re going to try and do some more stuff there. That’s probably one of the better social media websites for a band. You get the music and you see faces. We all know music sales help influence the music industry, what are your thoughts about sharing a music file as opposed to that sale on iTunes? The problem is, is that it’s not a black or white answer. People can share it and still buy. We put a lot of work and a lot of money into making our music. It would be nice if people appreciated that. We want people to share our music. In the past, we’ve actually given away our music for free. We had “Last September” up for free for six months and people were still buying it. It’s pretty cool to see that people see some value in music you’ve created. It’s good for a band like us. It just shows that people care about you, and that they’re willing to pay for something you’ve made.

FALL OUT BOY ARE BACK

As I’m sure all of you have heard by now, Fall Out Boy are officially back. Not only did the band reunite, but they also announced a string of tour dates, a new album titled ‘Save Rock and Roll’ due out May 6th and 7th, and released a new single titled “My Songs Know What You Did In the Dark (Light Em Up). What a huge day for music.

BY: KYLE KOTAJARVI

The song in itself is not what you would expect from a band that has come from the likes of TTYG and ‘From Under the Corked Tree’, but it is a progression from the band’s last two albums. If it weren’t for Patrick Stump’s familiar voice, the song would seem somewhat unidentifiable from Fall Out Boy’s older material. I’m not saying it’s not a good song. What I’m saying is it’s a step forward for Fall Out Boy. They said it themselves, “The future of Fall Out Boy starts now.” The song starts out with a hip-hop inspired sample before the full band kicks in. Vocals are very upfront in the mix, with drums coming in behind the vocals, and guitars a little farther back in the mix. The mix is resemblant of a top-40 song, but it’s not over polished-like you get with a lot of that genre. The verses of the song are the strongest lyric-wise and vocal-wise. Stump sings with such passion and fire. The chorus is a little anti-climactic and repetitive. Though the "whoas" are catchy, it just seems like it's missing some tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Though when Stump screams "I'm on fire" in the chorus, the hopes and dreams of a million Fall Out Boy fans come true. It's a really good first effort from a band that's been gone for more than three years. We've missed you Fall Out Boy. INTERVIEW

buckcherry

While Buckcherry were on their Canadian tour and preparing for the release of their sixth album ‘Confessions’ out on February 19th. Singer, Josh Todd, sat down with December Leanne to discuss the process & preparation of the new album, the bands current tour, rumoured short films & other extras.

BY: DECEMBER LEANNE

Can you give us a bit of a brief history on how the band started? Keith and I got together in about 1997. We met through a mutual friend, and started writing songs together, then we figured we had some song writing chemistry and decided to get the band together. Now we’re coming up to the release of our sixth record, ‘Confessions’ on February 19th and we’re very excited.

“Gluttony” were you guys expecting that response and are you happy with it? I am. When you’re writing songs you’re isolated away from the public and you feel like the stuff is great, but you really don’t know until it gets there. Then you get their reaction. When a lot of people react in a good way that means you touched on something, and that’s the moment where it’s most gratifying, as a song writer.

Do you find it difficult to remain inspired in an industry that’s constantly changing? There’s so many things, so much information out there to get inspiration from; I read a lot of books. The key to Buckcherry’s success is that we stick to our guns and do what we feel is right as a band, there’s always outside forces that try to discourage you from your dreams or being who you are. We figured out early on, that as long as we do what feels good inside that it will always work out, and that we write good songs then that’s it.

Rumor has it, you guys will be releasing a short-film along side the new album, what can you tell us about that? Yes, I wrote a short-film, it’s about 30 minutes long, has a director, has been casted, there’s been some trouble with funding, so we’re going to make it around a DVD of the live show as well. We’re working on that and it will probably be out after the record release.

With ‘Confessions’ being the sixth album does it differ from your previous albums a lot? This one is a conceptional record, it revolves around the “Seven Sins”, and it’s something Keith and I have been talking about for a long time. A few bands have done it, but we wanted to do our take; and think we did a really good job. What was your favorite part of recording the new album? I write all the lyrics, so it was definitely tackling each sin and the subject matter and trying to make it a great song. It was really challenging but interesting. Some of the songs are poetic in a way, and when I listen back to them I’m really pleased with it, and feel like the sins are timeless and something that people can listen to for years and years. Were there any difficulties that joined you guys while recording the new album? There’s always difficulties, usually with a song not quite coming together like how we thought it was going to be, then not being as good as we thought. Having to re-write songs and sometimes having different visions and band-mates might butt heads. But it’s all part of coming out with great material, you have to go through all those conflicts, to get to something really special. The fans seem to love the first single

Is the DVD based on the Seven Sins also? Yes, the story is basically about this teenage boy who comes home from school one day and finds his father has committed suicide. While through the grieving process he acts out the Seven Sins. He also meets this love interest and he learns how to forgive his father, and fades off into the sunset with this girl, it’s pretty cool. Tour talk, what’s been your favorite thing about the current tour? Just being back in these major markets up here in Canada. The over-whelming response while being in the dead of winter. It’s cool to come up see snow everywhere, then you get to where you’re going and the place is packed. What does the rest of the year look like for Buckcherry after the album is released? We’ve always got plans. We’ve already done over a hundred shows since we’ve finished recording, so we’ll be going worldwide. We just got back from the UK, took some time off, doing the Canadian Tour, then more time off then meeting with Kid Rock in the states. Then we’re heading to Europe and doing summer festivals out there, and trying to do an Australia & Japanese run. We tour a lot on our records because we base our foundation on our live shows. That’s where we shine, and it’s the best part of this business. The only way to make money is to be on the road now.

up & coming

BELLA DIEM Bella Diem is a band of rising stars. Hailing from Birmingham, UK (as so many up-and -coming musicians do these days), the dual-fronted group set themselves apart from Peace, Swim Deep, Jaws, and the rest of the ‘B-Town’ scene with their acoustic melodies and vocal-driven tracks. Forget what you’ve heard so far; Bella Diem are a class of their own. The band formed at one of the UK’s leading music colleges, Access To Music, and graduated from there last year. Since they started playing together, they’ve toured across the United Kingdom and played various festivals such as Sound City, Fringe Festival and The Great Escape. The band have firmly established themselves within the music scene in their hometown and have even sparked interest from Birmingham’s leading event company. This year already looks to be filled with big opportunities for the band.

With a debut album in the not-too-distant future, Bella Diem are a band you really don’t want to say you missed out on. The group are next playing at Birmingham’s Hare & Hounds, alongside Leeds-based Ellen and the Escapades and Manchester natives The Travelling Band, on March 15th. Until then we suggest you keep up to date with the band as we expect 2013 will be a more than promising year for this up and coming act.

TWITTER: twitter.com/belladiemmusic FACEBOOK: facebook.com/bella.diem.music

“Bullet” is the groups latest single which was released in January of this year. Twanging guitars, steady drumbeats, and tender harmonies entwine and flow with ease. Vocals soar gracefully, with lyrics that echo long after the track ends. It’s well crafted, with enticing melodies and enough hooks to make the track feel familiar after just a couple of plays, before you know it, you’re smitten.
