Just imagine From the Heart Tactile textiles! The great joy to be had in employing a range of techniques to turn materials into a oneoff creation lies behind the launch of Heart Space Studios earlier this year. Expert, experienced tutors chosen for their craftsmanship are your guide to working with fabric, thread, beads, fleece, leather, paper, metal and wood, among other media. The creative process starts with drawing, researching and sampling, with your skill and confidence enhanced en route to producing something that’s personal, meaningful or just plain useful. Whether kept or given, love is woven into its very fabric. Over a dozen different workshops include bookbinding, embroidery, embellishment, patchwork and felt. August’s courses include pattern cutting, bead making and corsetry, with September bringing a cobweb felt day course, the start of a six-week textile art course (inspired by ripe, delicious fruit), a cushion-making hand-quilting day, business cardmaking class, infinite squares on an artistic quilt and kimono techniques. Much positive feedback has already been received, with one student saying: “Many thanks for a really lovely two days – I was

Take wing at Hawkwood Hawkwood College’s beautiful Gloucestershire setting is the starting point for some delightfully diverse learning. Whether you’re seeking a new skill, new friends, inspiration or inner peace, its tranquillity provides the perfect backdrop. Classes
run throughout the year and plenty remains to contemplate in 2011 – not least a gathering in celebration of 11/11/11! The nimble-fingered will enjoy picking up nuido, a form of Japanese embroidery, while similarly creative courses include soap-making, landscape painting, willow work, a weekend casting with plaster of Paris, rag rug making, Chinese brush painting and the chance to produce your own singing bowl. There’ll be 10 times the fun when the Aurora Wind Ensemble takes a three-day study of works for wind dectet (a minimum musical proficiency applies for participants). Enhance your wellbeing via yoga and a naturally nourishing skincare class or explore your spiritual side via courses covering ‘green days of the dancing stillness’, sacred clowning and the lost secrets of Hawaiian shamanism. Courses & Training Guide 2011 Celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2011, its spacious studio encourages artist to explore their work and exchange ideas. Technical support nurtures the production of original prints while courses, workshops and master classes educate the public in printmaking. Choose from subjects like screenprinting and etching (both at beginner and intermediate levels), monoprinting, collagraph, relief printing and block printing. A low-tech screenprinting course embodies the punk era’s do-it-yourself attitude and a folksy, handmade aesthetic, while a power gravure master class sees you make your mark on perspex with the help of power tools. Doubtless the mood will be calmer during the three-week course on contemporary art taken by a former Tate St Ives audience development associate. A 90-minute talk in November will discuss why contemporary artists use print. Demand for all courses is great so book up before it’s too late. FFI TEL: 0117 929 0135, EMAIL. Draw, dance, DJ Express your creative side at the University of Bath’s Institute of Contemporary Interdisciplinary Arts. A high-quality programme of courses and workshops, led by professional tutors and high-profile visiting experts caters for beginner level upwards. Open to the general public, the programme spans introductory skills and openended experimentation, introducing participants to exciting contemporary practices en route. Music lovers can choose from visiting musician-led courses and workshops covering samba drumming, conducting, chamber music, computing for sound, DJing, voice and more, while dance offerings at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels include contemporary, ballet, street and jazz. Nurture the thesp within via acting and performance technique classes and specialist workshops from visiting companies or give rise to your inner artist via the chance to explore painting and drawing’s more traditional skills through a range of creative approaches and discussion. There are also courses in digital art and photography at various levels. The institute’s diverse and unusual activities portfolio has led to its unique place in the Bath cultural scene. Its programme is open to ages 16+ and runs during the university term, with daytime, evening and weekend activities available. Magnificent seventh
Hats on!
Backwell School’s community courses for adults are a great way to learn a new skill and they could change your life. It’s never too late to learn something new and this will be the seventh year the school has organised a programme of courses for adults in the local community. All are leisure courses, with the emphasis on learning in an enjoyable and supportive environment and with paperwork kept to a minimum. This year the school is welcoming four new tutors while new courses include stained glass, sugarcraft, interior design and creating a photo book. Further choices include art, block printing, creative writing, sewing & textiles, French, Italian, photography and digital imaging. Courses run on Monday and Tuesday evenings and the school’s excellent facilities. As a performing and visual arts specialist school, Backwell is keen
There are more new courses being offered by the Adult Learning Service this autumn than you can shake a stick at. Indeed, shaking a stick at something seems to be about the only subject in which it doesn’t run a class. Its curriculum includes wellbeing, arts & crafts, DIY, music & dance, languages, cookery, computing and more, and within these broad categories you’re sure to find something to engage and enthral. New offerings at its St Pauls Learning & Family Centre range from the placid – yoga, hat-making, crafts recycled and recorders & guitars for beginners – to the slightly more energetic woodwork, bicycle maintenance, sustainable gardening, creative writing, drama workshops and the lively fun of Rajasthani gypsy dance. Over at the service’s Stoke Lodge premises there’s more hat-making (beside bread and pastry

making) with cooking with fresh herbs, wholefood cookery and fish dishes bringing delicious diversity. History – and film – buffs will love a course charting the rise and fall of Hollywood, while you can brush up on historic art by investigating the painting techniques of the Old Masters. Food for thought Tuition is on a back burner at Teoh’s Cookery School over the summer but the autumn will once again see students learning to appreciate good far-eastern food. As one of them, you’ll learn about Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian, Thai and Indonesian cuisine, with lessons covering student introduction, a guide to ingredients, food preparation, cooking and (most importantly) eating. Most ingredients can be found in local grocery stores (the Teoh’s shop sells more specific items). Classes are small and most last around four hours, costing £50 per person, with meat, seafood, vegetarian and vegan students catered for. Vouchers and gift cards are available if you’d like a classmate. Suffice to say, this is one school where nobody goes truant. FFI TEL: 0117 907 1191, WEB: WWW.TEOHS.NET

Let us play Access all areas If you’ve got the music in you, the experts at Access to Music will bring it out. Its full-time one- and two-year performing musician course at levels 2 and 3 is designed for musicians, vocalists and singer/songwriters looking to create, record, perform and promote original music either in bands or solo. Those interested must be aged 16 or over, and while no previous qualifications are necessary, some of the college’s partner institutions may have entry requirements. Application is via interview/ audition during which you will demonstrate you have the skills, drive and motivation to complete the course. Once accepted, you can expect to nurture your muso mojo to make it in the biz, as a solo singer-songwriter, MC/ rapper, pop singer or in an indie band, metal group, jazz ensemble or folk duo. As well as catering for performing musicians, the college also offers a digital musician course along similar lines. Appealing to musicians, producers and composers seeking to create, record and promote original music using digital audio workstations, it’s the perfect course for those into synthesizers, samplers and sequencers. Students will use software like Reason and Logic to create and realise their music. FFI TEL: 0800 281842, EMAIL: INFO@ ACCESSTOMUSIC.CO.UK

All the world’s a stage and there’s a world of training on offer here. A stage design class brings the chance to make your own set model and artwork while technical training days guarantee a session shadowing the tech team during a performance this season. Budding Bards get a ‘writing for theatre’ class, while those after the specific skills to bring his words to life on stage have a ‘playing Shakespeare’ course as an excellent grounding. The great man’s sonnets form the basis of a ‘movement for performance’ class teaching students how to tell a story with their body. Other acting skills courses range from beginner- and intermediate-level options through an improvisation workshop coinciding

Trapeze with ease In these difficult times we all need a little escapism, so what could be more thrilling than the chance to pick up some circus skills? Roll up! Roll up! Daring young (18+) men and women are invited to transport themselves through the air with no difficulty whatsoever thanks to a five-week Circomedia course on the flying trapeze. Run in the evening, the next is likely to start in August, but please contact Circomedia for confirmation. Whenever it starts, students will begin learning on a static trapeze (as well as corde lisse – which involves performing acrobatics on a vertical rope) before progressing upwards. Many choose the class as a challenging way of keeping fit, with upper body strength key to success. Others use it as a way of retaining skills already acquired. Whatever your reason for coming, there’s the possibility of participating in a very informal course-end show wherein you can demonstrate your prowess to friends and family. A maximum class size of eight ensures students

Upcoming half-day taster sessions on 7 August (flying trapeze), 4 September (beginners’ aerial) and 30 October (circus skills) give the inquisitive a flavour of what to expect from tuition, while existing and emerging professionals should note the special week-long training programme from 19-25 September. Entitled ‘What Next?’, it will cover a wide variety of performance areas, including burlesque, cabaret, contemporary and traditional circus, dance, theatre and more. The week will feature oneto-one master classes, small group workshops and an interesting new session – creative playtime – during which artists with ideas will be able to explore them with the help and support of others. She bangs the drums Musician Satveer Kaur has been playing the dhol (bhangra drum) for around seven years and is a veteran of many a St Werburghs jam session. She also offers tuition in this wonderfully distinctive instrument (which makes a wonderful sound, too, in the right hands). The drumming is done upright, with the drum worn sideways so both skins can be played. One end is covered with goatskin and is played with a dagga; the other has a nylon skin and is struck with a tilli. With one side establishing bass and the other beating out a rhythm, this is multi-tasking at its most melodic. “If you can rub your stomach while patting your head, you should be a quick learner!” says Satveer. Like any good teacher she makes the difficult look very easy, but her friendly manner is guaranteed to put all at ease, ensuring progress is made. Classes can be arranged flexibly, so those who’d rather learn alone can get one-to-one tuition while those keen to round up some mates can go for group lessons. Satveer herself has performed in front of hundreds at gatherings in Eastville Park, so maybe one day you’ll also captivate an appreciative audience. FFI TEL: 07824 955478.

Academic Courses
A question
of degree If you thought universities and colleges just offer courses and qualifications in traditionally academic subjects like English, Maths and Natural Science, think again... For the journey… The City of Bristol College is recognised throughout the UK as a top Access to Higher Education course provider and has a range of pathways to advance your learning. Its university level prospectus for 2011/12 is now available and explains how classes taken in the evening or daytime over one or two years can prepare you for degree courses at university or a foundation degree or HNC at the college. No formal qualifications are necessary – your life/work experience, commitment, existing skills and potential will be assessed when you apply. The college’s Access pathways include art, media & design, combined studies, health, social work, physiotherapy, initial teacher training, science, engineering & computing and nursing & midwifery. Once ready to progress, foundation degrees in areas such as accounting with management, administration & business technology, aerospace engineering manufacturing, business, complementary health therapies, digital media production, substance abuse and food & beverage management await. Other courses such as engineering (mechanical) or engineering (mechatronics) are offered as HNCs with an option to progress to a foundation degree, while those keen to rise still higher will find postgraduate certificates in education run in partnership with UWE. As one former student says: “Just go for it. Don’t sit around building regret – jump in with both feet.” FFI THE HE CENTRE, ASHLEY DOWN CENTRE, CITY OF BRISTOL COLLEGE, PO BOX 2887, BRISTOL, BS2 2BB. Spa’s in your eyes If you expect your journey into academia to take you somewhere special – literally and metaphorically – then a Bath Spa University postgrad course is just the ticket. After all, how many universities can boast their own parkland and estate and medieval buildings? The Newton Park campus estate’s stunning open spaces encourage clear thinking and bring inspiration, while the university’s Sion Hill art and design campus has recently undergone major redevelopment and boasts some of the country’s best facilities and equipment. A strong environmental ethos and staff who care (and an absence of hustle and bustle) will free your mind for the serious business of academically challenging and vocationally relevant taught courses. Art and design subjects include curatorial practice, brand development, fine art and investigating crafts, while early years professional status, specific learning difficulties/dyslexia and professional practice in higher education are among the offerings from the School of Education. Many of the tutors taking the School of Humanities and Cultural Industries’ creative writing MA are practising and published writers, while its literature and landscape MA draws upon the staff’s internationally recognised expertise in the field.
The school’s other MA courses include heritage management, travel and nature writing and feature film-making. Performing Shakespeare is one of the School of Music and the Performing Arts’ MA offerings alongside theatre for young audiences and songwriting. Variety within the Science, Society and Management School’s range includes biology and geography, both of which can be taken as a graduate certificate or diploma. Open options With increasing tuition fees in the headlines, more and more young people fear being unable to go away to university. The solution? Let university come to you! The Open University offers the chance to get a top degree without the worry of massive debt being a burden in the years – or even decades – after graduation. There’s no need to leave home and the flexibility of study means you can fit tuition around employment so you can learn while you earn. This is something particularly attractive to those aged 18-24 who are keen to get their career underway while acquiring the qualifications to send them up the career ladder. It’s a double whammy of the finest order! Students can also stay close to family and friends. Want proof Open University students can compete with those from traditional universities? In March its law students beat those from 32 other universities to win a national mooting tournament held at Gray’s Inn in London, elite universities Durham and Exeter being defeated in the last round and final respectively. Want to find out more? Drop in to an open day on 10 September at 4 Portwall Lane, Bristol from 11am-3pm when you can talk to educational advisers, view course materials and find out more about student support and the like.

Further, higher, deeper Freediver Sara Campbell dived to 96m in the Bahamas to break a world record; Simon Pegg travelled to the year 2233 when playing Scotty in ‘Star Trek’; and Josh Lewsey was at full-back when Jonny Wilkinson sent that drop kick over to win the Rugby World Cup for England in Australia. Whether scaling the heights, descending to the depths or venturing forward in time, they all have one thing in common – a degree from Bristol University. If you’re interested in following in their flippers or rugby boots, find out more at an open day on Wednesday 21 September. You’ll need to book in advance: interest is great as we go to press so you’re advised to register yours as soon as. Prospective undergraduates will be able to find out about departments and facilities, meet academic and support staff, talk to current students about their experiences and get advice on funding and how to apply for their course. The university’s handy prospectus lists courses from accounting & finance and aeronautical engineering to veterinary science. Sara, Simon and Josh left Bristol with German & Italian, drama and physiology
Choosing which university to attend is likely to be the biggest decision of your life thus far, so getting the right information beforehand is vital. Poring over a prospectus is a natural first step, but nothing beats attending an open day, and those at the University of Glamorgan promise to be as impressive as they are instructive. Highlights at its Treforest site include a civil engineering demonstration in which you’re invited to smash a Kevlar-reinforced beam! Eagle-eyed legal types can make close inspection of the Law School’s state-of-the-art moot courtroom with its video facilities, while the site’s WYSIWYG centre is the only one of its kind outside London. There’s hands-on finding out at the university’s Glyntaff site, where those keen on chiropractics get a talk and tour of the centre. Prospective forensic science undergraduates can contemplate the journey from CSI to the courtroom, while no stout footwear is needed to find out about the field work experiences making the geography department Wales’s best. Medical scientists can even discover what bones can tell us about their former owner. Back in Cardiff, your Swoosh swishness is under investigation via a graphic communication seminar determining how well you know your logos. Fashion trends are brought into focus while a media technology workshop posits whether you’re in Cardiff or somewhere else. The next undergraduate open days are on 16 September and 22 October, with those interested in attending asked to register in advance. FFI TEL: 08456 434030, WEB: WWW.GLAM. AC.UK

Alan Sugar isn’t the only one offering bright sparks the chance to further their career with an apprenticeship. City slickers Here’s a good idea which is bound to get a resounding thumbs-up from the most demanding captain of industry. The City of Bristol College offers apprenticeships (at level 2) and advanced apprenticeships (at level 3) which are just the job when it comes to getting ahead in business (or act as an excellent base for a foundation degree). Diverse options include barbering, beauty therapy, craft bakery, front office, multi-skilled hospitality, plastering, professional cookery and youthwork. If you are offered an apprenticeship, the college will work with you to team you up with a local employer; business & administration apprentice Stephanie, aged 17, has her placement at the college itself. Make it in music Despite what those immensely popular talent shows would suggest, there are roles in the music business other than lead singer. Consequently, the music practitioner advanced apprenticeship offered by Access To Music can help many fulfill their dream. This full-time, level 3, two-year course is for
anyone with the business flair to work in the music industry as a sound engineer, label owner, event promoter, music artist, manager or journalist. If you’re keen, you should ideally have a level 2 music business/music performance/music technology qualification, or a portfolio of music industry practice plus level 1 maths and English. You will also be invited to attend an interview/audition. The qualification is designed to equip graduates with a flexible range of technical, business, marketing and self-management skills to meet the needs of the ever-changing music industry. Among numerous other disciplines you will undertake a skills analysis and develop a professional career plan with support from mentors and instructors, engage in guided projects which build skills for your chosen career and explore revenue streams within the music industry. You will also benefit from Access to Music’s unique employer-matching service. FFI TEL: 0800 281842, EMAIL: INFO@ ACCESSTOMUSIC.CO.UK, WEB: WWW. ACCESSTOMUSIC.CO.UK

Higher groundings The news coming from Norton Radstock College is that an apprenticeship can be developed in almost any job for which an employer

sees a need. It’s a growing area, with a direct progression route into higher level study if the apprentice and employer choose. Becca Thurston, apprenticeship coordinator at the college, says: “I would recommend anyone who is completing either GCSEs or A Levels to strongly consider an apprenticeship route as you not only gain valuable qualifications but also work experience and usually an opportunity to progress within the company for which you are working. There are now also opportunities for higher level apprentices to gain qualifications at levels four and five, which is degree level.” The college’s apprenticeships include conservation, waste management, heritage management and teaching assistance and also in business support areas such as administration and customer service. Apprentices can be any age and it’s a great opportunity for anyone who is looking for a career change. Norton Radstock College apprentice Mark Woodford is 39 and has recently completed an apprenticeship in health & social care for adults. Taking a course to learn French, Italian, Spanish or Japanese means you won’t get lost in translation. Second helpings The Bristol Language Centre provides a wide range of courses for speakers of English as a second language. Choose general or intensive English, business English or take a Cambridge exam (FCE or CAE) or TOEIC for professional English. The centre also offers EAP, foundation and IELTS for university preparation. Practical, real-life English is taught in a lively, multi-lingual setting, mirroring the modern English-speaking world. Classes focus on active participation, using up-to-date materials, integrating speaking, listening, reading and writing, and covering core areas of grammar and vocabulary. Feedback is actively sought to ensure classes are as useful, relevant and motivating as possible, and there’s even the freedom to choose what you study on Friday afternoons and make suggestions for the social programme! All around the world The joy of learning French, German, Chinese, Spanish, Italian and Japanese in a supportive and friendly atmosphere is on offer at Languages in Bath. If you enjoy exploring the world’s cultures, you’ll love the chance to share experiences of being abroad and find enthusiastic tutors with a passion for people and places. The group’s small classes will quickly build confidence in understanding and speaking, and there’s plenty of opportunity to practise the new words and expressions you’ve learnt. A weekly ‘live’ session combines with learning via information and online media, with these two different learning forms complementing each other perfectly. Evening classes are run under the auspices of St Gregory’s Catholic College in Combe Hay Lane. FFI TEL: 07894 913322, WEB: WWW. LANGUAGESINBATH.CO.UK
Are you experienced? When Bristol University and UWE closed their modern languages lifelong learning programmes, Fabienne Vailes, who’d been teaching at both, and Stewart Redpath decided to launch a new school. The Language Experience specialises
in high-quality teaching (already over 10 topranking ex-university teachers have signed up) in small classes (max 12 students). Learner satisfaction surveys at the end of each module assess tuition and ensure high standards. Classes cover all abilities from beginner to advanced and are staged at Redland High School. Fabienne’s very popular philosophy is to adapt teaching to the individual or group, ensuring all get the maximum from her tuition. As we go to press, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Arabic are on offer, but this range may expand to include languages such as Polish and English for non-English speakers. Each course is arranged over three 10-week terms with the first term starting in the week beginning 26 September. FFI TEL: 01275 376952/07980 649262, EMAIL: FABIENNE@LANGUAGEEXPERIENCE.CO.UK
Laidback learning “The teachers are so friendly and great at building confidence... I now travel to Spain every holiday and find myself speaking Spanish without thinking about it.” When a school gets feedback like this, it’s definitely talking the right language. The Leftbank Centre boasts native speakers teaching Spanish and French in a relaxed atmosphere and attractive setting. Small classes ensure effective learning, and there’s great demand so please register your interest early. Courses offer four ability levels and run for 10 or 12 weeks with classes lasting 90 minutes, the emphasis being on working toward a competent conversational level. The principle that someone’s thinking and feeling patterns are reflected in their movement lies behind dance movement psychotherapy, a process facilitating emotional, mental, social, physical and spiritual growth via dance and movement. Dance Voice – with six therapists, the region’s leading dance movement psychotherapy centre – works with a wide client base throughout the year. Its aim is to provide accessible, affordable courses which convey an understanding of art-as-therapy to professionals. The centre believes its dance movement psychotherapy model is unique and it is manifested in a BTEC (Edexcel Award) course run in collaboration with City of Bristol College and a masters programme validated by Canterbury Christ Church University. The former recommences on 20 September, runs for 36 weeks over three terms, and its major areas of investigation include Laban movement and dance as well as related arts. The next masters programme also starts in September. It takes three years to complete, but you’ll feel the benefits long before that, as one student comments: “Training as a dance therapist at Dance Voice is helping me to forge links between mind and body, to facilitate both emotional and physical connections and to use these skills in a practice setting with clients where positive shifts in energy and awareness can occur.” FFI TEL: 0117 953 2055, EMAIL: ADMIN@ DANCEVOICE.ORG.UK, WEB: WWW. Learn from the master To receive the best training you have to have the best teacher. Having studied and taught shiatsu since 1987 and yoga since 1984, Bath School of Shiatsu and Yoga (BSSY) founder Frank Davis is among the West Country’s most experienced teachers. After studying with the world’s leading teachers, he was a Bristol School of Shiatsu senior teacher and founded the BSSY in 2000 to combine the powerful and mutually beneficial practices of shiatsu and yoga. A three-year professional shiatsu training programme leading to a nationally recognised practitioner qualification is the school’s main focus. Students also learn yoga techniques in depth, western anatomy, physiology and counselling skills in classes limited to a maximum of 14 students. The course’s flexible nature gives you scope to take a break from tuition if you wish. First year training starts on 26-7 November with second/third year training resuming on 24-25 September, but

Get some credit Norton Radstock College has long been recognised for its health and social care work-based training, with diplomas replacing NVQs in April 2011. These credit-based awards enable students to cherry pick different credits to suit different client groups and incorporate up-to-date knowledge of standards. Training can be provided in the workplace and there are discounts for choosing multiple credits. Interested? On 31 August (3-6pm), the college is running a taster day for school leavers and those considering changing career; it will offer hands-on activities including changing a nappy blindfolded, putting a wheelchair together, testing heart rates, finger spelling, sensory awareness and breath testing. Dramatic licence We all carry memories of our experiences, some of which may be unhappy, and if these are left unresolved, they can play a major
part in the way we relate to others and our surrounding world. By revisiting a challenging situation through drama and theatre we can gain insight and understanding, enabling us to better understand ourselves, others and their actions and reactions. Dramatherapy is a form of interactive group work with the emphasis on the use of drama as a means to explore the self and surrounding world. Dramatherapists work in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, day centres, schools and within social services and local communities. Scenario Dramatherapy offers training in this rewarding, holistic and active therapy, whether you’re seeking a taster course, additional skills for your workplace as part of continuing professional development or you wish to practise at professional level. A ‘critical dialogue’ weekend on 10-11 September investigates the possibly inhibitory role of the inner critic while a workshop on 8 October examines expression through our bodies.

Get the massage If you’re interested in holistic massage, look no further than the Bristol College of Massage & Bodywork (BCMB). Founded by Andy Fagg in 1986, its aim is to lay a strong foundation in the principles and practice of holistic massage to a high professional standard… while also having fun! Students will be empowered with strategies for exploring their fascination with the human body via a thorough, balanced training programme including effective body use to ensure easy, fluent and creative massage. As they train they will experience greater self-awareness and personal development. Client-centred, individualised approaches to massage teach anatomy, physiology and pathology in a dynamic, handson way, and a high staff/student ratio means you’ll get plenty of attention. Oh yes, and everything’s in the hands – quite literally – of ridiculously passionate tutors! Specifically, BCMB offers monthly introductory workshops as well as comprehensive professional training programmes suitable as the foundation for a career. The next starts on 1 October and there are still places left. Qualified therapists can also enhance their skills via advanced courses. FFI TEL: 0117 377 1201, WEB: WWW. BRISTOLMASSAGE.CO.UK

Bear it in mind The Clifton Practice Hypnotherapy Training Centre is one of the foremost establishments of its kind in the UK and offers training to those seeking to break into this fulfilling profession as well existing practitioners keen to up their skills level. Its hypnotherapy practitioner diploma course for the future hypnotherapist lasts 10 months and is designed to equip graduates to enter private practice, reassured by the knowledge they have the support of the Clifton Practice’s principals and staff if at any time they need professional help or advice. The course structure has the enormous advantage of including the valued writings of various experienced practitioners and is predominantly CBT and SFBT orientated. The next course’s starting dates are 10-11
September (weekend course) and 16 September (small group weekday). For existing hypnotherapists, the practice provides a thorough continuing professional development programme meeting graduates’ requirements as well as those of national hypnotherapy bodies. Both its advanced courses – CBT skills for hypnotherapists and SFBT skills for hypnotherapists – have National Qualification Framework level 4 equivalence and are externally verified by the government awarding body. Make a good job of it Improve your job prospects, enhance your career or change direction completely with a vocation-based training course. They are the gas... ... and the plumbing, construction, engineering and the electrical. They’re also very good when it comes to business, media and performance. Who are they? Filton College, that’s who. What’s more, many of the college’s vocational academies’ courses are available part-time so can be fitted around your existing work schedule. Its Bristol Construction Academy offers a six-week introduction to brickwork on Tuesday evenings which can lead on to a level 2 diploma in brick-working daytime course on Mondays and Tuesdays. Similarly, there’s a taster carpentry course on Tuesday evenings from which you can progress to a level 2 carpentry diploma class on Thursdays and Fridays (which can, in turn, lead onto an NVQ). Seven different electrical courses range from portable appliance testing to a level 3 qualification, with plastering, plumbing and three gas-related courses bringing more variety. The college’s South West Academy of Dramatic Arts boasts two theatres and numerous rehearsal rooms and dance studios, with tutors – professionals in their own fields – preparing students for highly professional shows ahead of possible careers in entertainment. Options include diplomas in dance, performing arts, acting, musical theatre and production arts (technical), with foundation degree/HND choices in dance, musical theatre and acting. Filton College’s Bristol Academy of Media Arts enjoys links with Watershed among other media establishments and is negotiating work placements with Endemol. Land ahoy! As a further education college, Norton Radstock College specialises in vocational courses and its land-based courses set it apart. Subject areas include horticulture, arboriculture, countryside & environment, floristry, animal care, veterinary nursing and equine studies. Working in the community is at the heart of much of the work experience in
which land-based students participate. Among many other projects, the college has recently been involved in Timsbury’s Bath in Bloom project, created a community fruit garden in Twerton, maintained footpaths in Kilmersdon (home of the legendary Jack and Jill), built dry stone walls on the Ammerdown Estate and run children’s tree climbing activities in Bath’s Royal Victoria Park. The department has recently developed its range of short courses further to suit both amateurs and professionals in the industry. In recent years the college has also celebrated the work of award-winning florists. Floristry students Janet Allen (2010) and Emma McConnell (2011) received City & Guilds Medals of Excellence for their outstanding work. Their tutor Jacqui Weaver also won a special teaching award. Janet says: “This award has given me the confidence to finally get out there and change my career! I started the course as a new hobby, but I was immediately submerged in a fascinating and

Profits from the past Customers are the lifeblood of any business and the City of Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, is very much in the business of keeping history alive. It attracts over 4,000,000 visitors annually, playing a major part in a tourism industry which contributes billions per annum to the UK economy. Studying for a BA or BSc combined award heritage degree from Bath Spa University is, therefore, a bit like having a city for a classroom! The university’s collaboration with almost every museum, gallery and heritage site in Bath and its environs has created an engaging course which offers a unique chance to receive tuition from heritage sector professionals as well as academics researching and writing about heritage. Lectures, seminars, workshops, fieldtrips and projects will introduce you to heritage’s concepts and realities while placements provide a priceless chance to make contacts and learn in the real world. Purpose built, airy & beautiful: Bristol City Yoga’s studio
Go gaga for yoga Places offering fitness classes aren’t always inviting – which makes Bristol City Yoga’s studio particularly remarkable. Designed specifically for yoga, it’s airy – and beautiful! – meaning these are classes you’ll look forward to. A yoga-loving community gathers for wonderfully diverse offerings including ashtanga, pilates, meditation, mother-and-baby and pregnancy variations, among others. The centre caters for all abilities and also offers teacher training. The mood is informal; some classes are on a drop-in basis (five versions, including iyengar) while others require advanced booking – what doesn’t vary is the quality of teaching and the warmth of the welcome. If you’ve never tried yoga before, after one session here you’ll wish you dropped in years ago. One happy lady said: “Awesome! Thank You. I love the space and have had a really good experience. The Bristol Folk House has its origins in a dockland church mission dating back to 1870. It’s extremely unlikely the stevedores of the day were offered burlesque life drawing classes (here on 3 August but may be sold out by the time you read this), but if they had been, it’s extremely likely demand would have been high. In 2011, the centre’s 200+ courses (including 15 new ones) remain popular so please book ahead. The emphasis is on learning for pleasure, with tuition in textiles a particular strength. Dressmaking and corsetry courses are long-established but there are now three different knickermaking classes showing you how to make four different kinds of undies! A dazzlingly diverse calendar’s other new offerings include salt printing and cyanotypes, workshops in autumn wildlife and ecofriendly Christmas decorations (which can be fed to the birds come January), stress and your immune system, clowning and creative art. Familiar faves include subjects like languages, fitness, arts & crafts, music, dance & drama and personal development. Those early missionaries sought to keep men out of pubs, but doubtless even they’d not disapprove of a drop to drink in the welcoming café as a way of cementing friendships. Raise a toast! Final year UWE product design technology student James Eelbeck has won a prestigious RSA Student Design Award. His redesigned toaster reduces and controls convective heat to facilitate more efficient toasting. “It’s better for the environment as it’s been designed with extended life in mind,” says James. “It is easy for owners to diagnose faults, replace parts and reassemble. I’m also very pleased with the convection control as this means toast is ready in half the time of a normal toaster and uses half the power.” FFI WEB: WWW.UWE.AC.UK
