ROZES
Rozes performing in Sacramento, and San Francisco, CA in 2017
ROZES got her first huge hit when she collaborated with The Chainsmokers before she released her own debut EP in 2016 broadcasting as, “Burn Wild.”
Elizabeth Mencel who is also known as ROZES was born in a suburb outside of Pennsylvania called Montgomeryville, Philadelphia on April 14, 1993. She grew up in a gospel-influenced home with jazz-loving parents, and she showed an interest in music from an early age. Rozes started playing the piano, and later on became a multi-instrumental genius while also succeeding in performing the saxophone, guitar, violin, flute, trumpet, and clarinet. After high school, she earned an associates degree from Montgomery County Community College and transferred to Temple University which she studied pre-nursing and eventually dropped the course to pursue her career in the music industry. “I kinda also wanted a music career, and it was my dream to be in the music industry,” she told The Reporter Online. Rozes came to recognition in September of 2014 when she released her debut single, “Everything” to rave music reviews all around the globe. Later on in the year, she was featured on an Australian EDM

producer, Just A Gent’s single, “Limelight” that has received over three million listens on SoundCloud, and became #1 on HypeM charts. When Rozes was pleased by the wonderful feedback on social media, she was discovered by the well-known EDM duo, The Chainsmokers who then released, “Roses” with her which has over six hundred million streams on Spotify to date. After she worked with The Chainsmokers, she immediately released her own original sound with elements of house, EDM, and pop into her own debut EP, Burn Wild that includes six tracks. During the same year of 2016, she also appeared at the stage of SXSW, and the popular fashion and music festival, Coachella in Southern California. As 2017 was another successful year for Rozes, she signed a deal with Photo Finish Records from New York City, NY which also has artists of 3OH!3, Misterwives, and The Mowgli’s. Next up, she released two singles, “Canyons” and “Famous” which were both released in just a few months apart. Later on in the year, she collaborated with another successful EDM trio, Cash Cash on releasing a single, “Matches” that has over 20 million streams via Spotify, and including more than seven different countries. Wrapping up the year for Rozes, she had opened up for another famous pop singer, MAX where she toured with him for a thirty-date tour around North America as she performed her hit singles. Today she is widely recognized with her significant crown of golden roses, along with her enticing, and pristine voice. Without a doubt, you will be hearing a lot more of ROZES and her sound in the future as she plans to release another EP, and more songs. BAYWAVES
Words by: Samantha Toy & Photography by: Jessica Piochon
Home Cities: Fran - Buenos Aries, Argentina Carlos - Madrid, Spain David - Santander, Spain Marco - Zaragoza, Spain
Baywaves photographed in London, UK
Even though the mem-
bers’ hometowns are quite heterogenous, the power of music has brought them together to create Baywaves. Baywaves is a hipno-pop band originating from Madrid, Spain that formed around 2014 which currently consists of David (guitar/vocals), Fran (bass), Carlos (guitar/keys), and Marco (drums).
20
They are the latest band to break out of Spain, and they have toured all across Europe with bands such as Hinds, Honey Moon, and Lois. As they have only been around for almost four years now, they have gained some recognition including online blogs worldwide, being signed to an independent label called Foehn Records based in Barcelona, and releasing some gnarly music.
The group first began back in high school when David and Marco met in Santander, Spain which is a city by the sea. When they realized they wanted to start a band, they released some songs together, and moved to Madrid where they were searching for local musicians to perform live with them. As the days went by, they eventually met Carlos through a blog Marco ran online, and saw
Fran performing with his previous band via YouTube. After they met a few times in person, David was then joined to Baywaves and then moved to Madrid to start his new career. After Baywaves settled down in Madrid calling their genre “hipno-pop” and setting some band goals, their next step was to create some music so they can finally hit the road. They released their debut EP “Only for Uz” back in 2016 which includes four tracks. They worked with Joe Walker from Lizard Wizard as he
mixed the EP, and help cowrite on “Marsupilami” which is the final track. Overall, their songs included smooth guitar riffs, catchy tunes, and “moving-your-hips-along” rhythms. Even though “Only for Uz” was short, it was an incredible EP that gave their fans a taste of their future music. A truly best gift anyone can wish for. Since the release of “Only for Uz,” they toured around Spain with a two and a half week tour
trying to get their name out there in the music scene. It eventually led the band to leave their home country to tour in England with bands such as Hinds, Honey Moon, and Lois. Their main goal is to engage with the audience in their live performance and make sure everyone is enjoying their time. As 2017 was a busy year for them, it quickly passed as they finished up mixing their music so they could release their next two singles “Gliss” and “Down 4 U” which both dropped within a three month time span. “Our first songs
played live felt quite hard-hitting so we wanted to have a mellow love song to play amid those tunes. When we sat down to record it (Down 4 U), we spent a lot of time geeking with vintage synths and keys, perfecting the vocal effects and working on the arrangements so it ended up having a catchy 70s pop vibe to it,” which the band stated in an interview with DIY Magazine. Baywaves also ended the year playing three shows in Spain with The Zephyr Bones and Holy Bouncer.
This year in 2018, the band is heading out to the UK for their first headline taking on London (two dates), and Brighton with Smooth Ends and Beach for Tiger at the end of March. They also have plans to release another four song EP in the next few months, and eventually releasing a full length album. Make sure to follow Baywaves on social media as they release more catchy tunes, and killer shows. Their music is available to stream on Soundcloud, and Spotify now!

Song of 2017: Glass Peaks - “Hold Me Closer” Words by: Samantha Toy
After releasing a major hit of “I’m Okay” just last year, Glass Peaks is back at it again with another single. Right now, the four-piece have earned themselves as of one of the UK’s biggest breakout bands, and this latest single defintiely upholds that title. Recently as a trio, “Hold Me Closer” is a single that shows a darker vibe than their previous singles, but it still delivers a killer hook, and major riffs that dives you into the indie beat with a distinctive harmonies. If you’ve heard the music of Foals, White Lies, or Depeche Mode, you can hear a resemblance in their music. With their last single “I’m Okay” hitting the Indie List on Spotify for four weeks, and the Viral UK 50 Chart (no.47), every release is catching the attention of tastemakers and listeners everywhere. The boys have had huge support from BBC Introducing in the form of 3/3 Track Of The Week accolades, courtesy of Abbie McCarthy (BBC Radio1). Their tracks have also been picked up and shown a lot of love by the likes of Tom Robinson (BBC Radio 6), John Kennedy (Radio X), George Godfrey (Absolute Radio), Charlie Ashcroft (Amazing Radio) and even METRO. With more live dates being announced regularly and with new releases in the pipeline, Glass Peaks are sure to build on the solid foundations they’ve made in their scene in 2018. Song of 2017: Why Don’t We - “Something Different” Words by: Samantha Toy
One of the biggest breakout bands of 2017, Why Don’t We released their breakthrough single, “Something Different” via Singature Entertainment on April 21, 2017. With more than sixty-four million individual audio streams, nearly two million Instagram followers, and total YouTube views approaching ninty million, Why Don’t We is undeniably 2017’s breakout pop supergroup. The band first came together in September 2016, uniting five supremely talented singer/songwriters, Daniel Seavey, Zach Herron, Corbyn Besson, Jonah Marais, and Jack Avery, who are all rising solo artists, each have their own substantial social media fan followings. But after repeatedly crossing paths on a series of national tours in recent years, the five artists banded together to deepen their powerful connection with fans around the world. “Something Different” is an infectious song that quickly ascended to Billboard’s Top 40, peaked at #1 on the iTunes Pop Chart, and reached Spotify USA’s Viral Top 50 with over twenty one million streams to date from their dedicated fanbase worldwide. Stated by the band in an interview, they explain that this track has two meanings. Lyrically, it’s about where a couple is doing their own thing, but personality wise, it’s about being unique, and being yourself. Starting on February 27th at Bogart’s in Cincinnati, Ohio, the band will touring their most extensive North American headline to date. Modern Nostalgia tour with The Maine, Dreamers, Night Riots PC: Shelby Reneau
When did you get into photography, and specifically music? I’ve always been into photography, but I starting caring more about it in college when I bought a bunch of vintage film cameras. Music photography became a thing for me around the same time after shooting a few of my friend’s DJ sets. It’s a hobby gone too far.
The Mowgli’s What is your daily schedule when you’re on the road? Wake up, wake band up, drive to the show, load in, set up office, print out photo of Steve Brule, tape it to The Maine’s greenroom door, load stage, sound check, grab food, have a drink, get Dreamers on stage, take show pics, get Dreamers off stage, have a drink, get Dreamers to meet and greet, rescue Dreamers from meet and greet, have a drink, and repeat. When do you have time to edit/post photographs? I’m constantly taking photos throughout the day. If it’s not with my DSLR, it’ll be with a film point and shoot in my jacket pocket or my phone. Documenting road life is much more interesting than just the live show. I edit whenever I can, in between all the tour managing. I’m not one to “spray and pray” so editing 100 or less photos a night isn’t daunting and doesn’t take much time. Mainland
When was your first tour and who was it with? My first tour was with Mainland and Dreamers when they supported Atlas Genius in 2015.
Magic Man

How do you deal with being a tour photographer, and have limited amount of wifi. How do you overcome that issue? There’s actually more wifi available than clean water, that’s America in 2017. If the wifi I’m using isn’t strong enough I’ll use my phone’s hotspot. There’s also Airdrop on my phone and laptop which doesn’t require internet at all. Dreamers
You’ve been on the road with Dreamers recently on the Modern Nostalgia tour with The Maine and Night Riots. What was your favorite memory from that specific tour? Our hotel in Sturbridge, MA happened to be haunted. The wallpaper print was an eerie detailed drawing of medieval people killing animals and beasts, the tub was full of dirt in a mysterious pattern, there was a painting of a child, and the phones didn’t work. A Google search showed this place was a destination for ghost hunters. It was our most fun hotel experience on this run.
Dreamers
What are your essential tour possessions aside from camera gear? Power strip, portable printer, Yerba Mate, and a stick of Palo Santo.
26
Dreamers
What are some pros and cons of your job? Opening for/playing the same festivals as Weezer 5 times this year was a pro. I’ll never forget standing side stage next to Rivers while Dreamers played ‘Sweet Disaster’ in Richmond, VA. There are few cons besides the lack of sleep, and dealing with van troubles.
Dreamers
Do you have any advice for future tour photographers? Don’t worry yourself with having the best gear. Eat a fibrous diet on tour. Don’t get in the way. Be wary of lizard people. Respect everyone on the tour from the lead singer to the merch seller. Tell your parents everything is great and that you’re eating vegetables. Remember that everything is actually great, even on the worst days. Dreamers Magic Man

MAX
Words & Photography by: Samantha Toy
Max Schneider who is musically known as
MAX has been performing since he was three years old. As he was growing up in Hell’s Kitchen, New York, MAX reenacted The Lion King on his kitchen table after seeing the show live on Broadway. From that moment, it was a life changing experience that sparked a moment in the film and music industry. Throughout his school life, he was involved in many circulars such as musical theaters, and tribal groups. Over the next few years, he starred in a Dolce & Gabbana campaign with Madonna at just seventeen while he was a senior at a performing arts high school which they were so understanding of allowing him to work on that campaign in Harlem. “It was very comfortable. She walked in the room, and I’m a big Madonna fan so I was expecting it to be nerve-wracking but she walked in and it was totally fine. I felt like her son for the day, I was supposed to be her son in the ad campaign actually. She was just so nice to me, it wasn’t like I was some random kid, she really treated me with respect and I truly respected her for that. MAX in San Francisco, CA at Regency Ballroom in 2017
She’s such a superstar but she treats you as though you’re on the same level. It was really incredible and she’s just a very nice, sweet person. I was pleasantly surprised,” commented by MAX in an article with The Cut about the campaign. After that incredible opportunity happened, he then moved to Los Angeles, California to further his career by headlining in Nickelodeon’s How To Rock as “Zander Robbins,” and characterizing as “Charlie” in a movie, Rags alongside Keke Palmer. Shortly after hopping on board with his acting, he also had a huge passion for singing, and he decided to start a YouTube channel where he uploaded covers of him singing with his close friends. A few of his major covers include “Hey There Delilah” by The Plain White T’s, and “Not Over You” by Gavin Degraw which both have collectively amassed over 2.5 million views.
32
Over the next three years, MAX had the honor to begin his first North American tour as a musician with Victoria Justice in the fall of 2012 with his band who were known as “the babes.” Shortly after, he had another incredible opportunity to perform a couple dates on the West Coast with New Jersey’s Action Item, and South Dakota’s Paradise Fears which he gained a vast amount of fans. As time passed, MAX released his second EP, “The Say Max EP” in May of 2014 which features four emotional yet romantic songs. Following the outrageous response through social media, he announced a headlining tour throughout the summer with Alexz Johnson. Aside from his music, MAX also played “Ian Martinez” in a one season show named “Crisis” on NBC which he enjoyed being a part with their cast. Just a few months later, he was approached by rapper, Hoodie Allen on Twitter to collaborate on a few songs
that appeared on Allen’s next album, “People Keep Talking” that was released in October. As the two became close friends, Allen also invited MAX to join him on the People Keep Talking tour with Chiddy Bang.
pro. I love how he does his work and it was really wonderful to see that first-hand. The film is cool. It’s also got John Cusack, Paul Giamatti, and Elizabeth Banks,” stated by MAX in an interview with Just Jared.
As another year has flown by, he shared the incredible news on Twitter that he had signed to DCD2 Records from New York City who have Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, Bebe Rexha, and Twenty One Pilots on the same bill. Since MAX’s name has been getting bigger from his outstanding work, Tim Armstrong, the vocalist of Rancid, contacted MAX about him starring in his next side project called Wichita where they released two singles, “Mrs. Magoo,” and “The W.O.R.M.” via YouTube. As MAX was collaborating with Armstrong, he also starred in Love & Mercy as “Van Dyke Parks” which is a movie based on Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys, and focusing on Brian Wilson’s life.
Months later, MAX headlined his second tour with CallMeKarizma, along with Kenzie and Harris as his two opening acts. Not much later, he also made a last second announcement that he would be joining his label mates in Fall Out Boy on tour with Wiz Khalifa, and Hoodie Allen.
“Doing this movie, I really learned so much about the group and how incredible they all really are. I got to work mostly with Paul Dano, who’s always been one of my favorite actors. He’s the coolest guy and such a

Subsequently, he began 2016 by releasing a his major hit, “Lights Down Low” which has accomplished over seventy-five million streams on Spotify, and earning a Gold certificate through RIAA for sales of more than 500,000 copies. In April, MAX had quietly married his girlfriend, Emily Cannon while proposing to “Lights Down Low” which was a song he had written for her. During that twelve month period, MAX also opened up for Disney’s R5 in the Midwest along with traveling to Asia with long time friends, Kurt Schneider, and Sam Tsui. Throughout the overwhelming year, he released his first full length album, “Hell’s Kitchen

off his upcoming second full length record, “Meteor.” With another successful year, MAX ended 2017 by performing a handful of holiday shows in December with acts such as Why Don’t We, Liam Payne, and Dua Lipa while performing at the memorable Madison Square Garden in New York, New York.
As 2017 passed very quickly, MAX toured with his friend, Gnash in the Spring alongside Sweater Beats, Imad Royal, Wrenn, and MyBoyJon on a twenty-four North American tour. Following the run, MAX had flown to London, England for the first time performing his headline show at The Garage. With the positive feedback from the sold out crowd, he announced a first European tour that will be held in the early months of 2018 where he will be performing in Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Germany, England, and Belgium. In the summer of 2017, MAX announced another headline tour where he performed new music
As 2018 just began, it’s going to be another successful year for MAX as he plans to tour more across the world, and to release his “Meteor” album sometime this year. If you haven’t already, go check him out online as he will be in your city in the near future!

“I think the highlight of our career was touring with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and it was fucking amazing.” If you’ve attended a music festival recently, I’m sure you heard of Deap Vally.
Deap Vally is an American rock n’ roll band from Los Angeles, California that consists of Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards (vocals/drums). The two met at a crochet class back in 2011 at a knitting shop in Atwater Village which Edwards commented, “I think we were both working on scarfs that day in class,” as we had the chance to Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards at Aftershock Festival chat with them at Aftershock Festival this year. “We had this long talk that first night when we met, and we eventually started a band together.” The duo released their first single, “Gonna Make My Own Money,” via Ark Recording in 2013 which is the fourth track off the band’s first record, “Sistrionix.” It was their first debut EP that made their band name well-known in the music industry to where they toured nonstop in the United States and Europe opening up for acts such as The Vaccines, Muse, Marilyn Manson, Peaches, Wolfmother, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. “I think the highlight of our career was touring with the Red Hot Chili Peppers because they’re fucking amazing. It was a time in our lives that we will never forget,” stated by Troy.

Years later after touring for “Sistrionix,” the duo released their second album, “Femejism” via Nevado Music on September 16, 2016, and it was produced by Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs). That record includes thirteen tracks that combines guitar shredding, wild beats, and incredible vocals to another level that you cannot imagine. As the months passed, Deap Vally released Femejism Unplugged EP in July of 2017 because “it’s a homage to the 90’s which was a time that we grew up in,” stated by Edwards.
As the group is only getting bigger more every year, Edwards mentions that they plan to tour more as much as possible, and to release additional music in 2018. Make sure to follow them at social media @deapvally for further updates of music, tours, and videos!

He Is Legend
It’s been such an incredible year for the rock band, He Is Legend. Following the release of their incredible album, “few,” the North Carolina natives have been performing across the nation playing to thousands of fans alongside August Burns Red, Norma Jean, Sevendust as well as performing at Aftershock, Rock Allegiance, SXSW, and Louder Than Life Festivals all throughout these past twelve months.
Omen. After performing for some years, the band made the final decision to call their band, He Is Legend in dedication of the 1954 vampire horror book, “I am Legend” by Richard Matheson. Even though the group’s perspective on screamo is more positive than other bands in their genre, it deflects the idea that He Is Legend is a Christian rock band who aims towards the misinterpretation of the band title.
As time went on, the band came back on social media announcing about their first show since their hiatus which was held at The Satellite Bar and Lounge in Wilmington, North Carolina. Just two months later, Croom made an additional announcement that they were working on another album which was released in 2014 named, “Heavy Fruit” via Tragic Hero Records. Over the next three years, He Is Legend has been touring frequently for their release of “Heavy Fruit.” As much as 2017 has been a hectic year for the band with their nonstop touring schedule, the group started off the 2017 by announcing
a tour with Norma Jean with Capsize. Just months later, they made a statement of dropping their fifth full length album, “few,” on April 28, 2017 via Spinefarm Records which consists of twelve killer riffs, heartfelt melodies, and incredible vocals. In honor of the band’s new album, they publicized touring dates that would be held in Europe, and North America along with opening up toured for August Burns Red for three dates on the East Coast. By the end of summer, the band made public appearances at South by So What, Aftershock Festival, Rock Allegiance, and Louder Than Life while performing music from over the past thirteen years. Reflecting on the band’s incredible year, Croom commented, “Playing with Ozzy Osbourne in Kentucky was sick as fuck and releasing our album was the highlight of our year,” as I had a moment to chat with the band in person at Aftershock
Festival in Sacramento, California just a couple months ago. “I think “few” has differed from “Heavy Fruit” by being a lot louder. It’s definitely more aggressive, there’s more riffs, it’s straight forward, and it’s hard rockin’. It’s just a wonderful feeling that we’ve been receiving very positive feedback from our fans, and everyone has been singing along with a great feeling in the world. We’re so grateful that this is our job,” stated by Williams. He Is Legend has plans for touring a lot more in 2018 so make sure to follow them on social media for additional information about their upcoming shows, videos, music, and so much more. “We’ll be wearing less clothing, and we’ll be more sexier. We hope to see you out on the road, and come jam with us!”
