ABOUT ME I’m Jade Hutton, 28, a make-up artist, and I live with my fiancé, Christian Watkins, 28, a building surveyor and carpenter, and Hector, our Italian greyhound. I have an interiors Instagram account @no14hectorshouse.
OUR HOME A three-bed Edwardian end-of-terrace near Huddersfield, which we bought in August 2016.
WHEN WE BOUGHT IT The layout needed a complete rethink, a new bathroom and kitchen were a must, and it required redecorating.
AND NOW We’ve knocked down walls, added an extension at the back to give us a large kitchen and decorated throughout with a modern-country look.
STYLE TIP Choose one neutral paint colour for the walls and use it throughout your home. It makes decorating so much easier and creates calming cohesion.

Friends and family all pitched in to help Jade and Chris turn their dated doer-upper into a cosy home that reflects their style
Determined to save up a decent deposit so I could buy my first home with my fiancé Chris, I was the last of my friends to leave home,’ says Jade. ‘Our family and friends are all local, so we knew we wanted to stay in the area, and because we are both fairly handy we were happy to wait for the perfect doer-upper to come along. Once we’d saved up enough, it took us four months to find this place. It was a bit of a wreck when we first saw it, but we could see straight away that it had potential. The decor was really old-fashioned, with floral carpets and brightly painted walls in every room, but there was lots of space, which for us was the most important thing. The ground floor was split into a series of small rooms and we were confident that we would be able to knock through to create an open-plan, light-filled living area, with a large kitchen at the back. There was also potential for adding an extra bedroom above the garage to give us even more space.
A fresh start As soon as we got the keys we threw ourselves into the work and ended up taking the house back to the bare brick so that we could make sure everything –from rewiring to decorating – was done exactly how we wanted it. The existing wall separating the living areas was the first thing we tackled and getting it structurally correct was a big job. Then once the walls were all where we wanted them, we started to put the house back together. During the building work we discovered the gorgeous fireplaces in the living room, which were originally plastered up, and had little gas fires

DIP-DYED POM-POM BASKET
1Gather all your materials: a basket and water-based paint of your choice, newspaper, a plastic tub big enough to dip the basket into, glue gun, enough pom-pom trim to go around the basket, three large pom-poms. The Fladis basket, £13 from Ikea, is perfect for this project. 2 Lay newspaper down to protect your surface and pour the paint into the plastic tub. Dip the basket into the paint up to your desired level. Gently shake off excess paint and hang the basket to dry, keeping the newspaper underneath to catch drips. 3 Once the basket is completely dry, use the glue gun to attach the pom-pom trim around the level of the paint. Then, attach the three large pom-poms to the top of the basket, using glue.

in them. They just needed a bit of cleaning and repointing to make them usable. We filled one with logs and installed a wood burner in the other.
Upstairs/downstairs We installed a new staircase up to the attic so it could be used as a bedroom and turned an old box room into a large bathroom because we wanted to have enough room for a free-standing bath. The original bathroom became our en suite. Sash windows were fitted throughout the house, and as the windows are quite large at the front, we added plantation shutters to stop people looking in. The shutters give us privacy but mean the light still streams through. We moved in once the bulk of the work was done, after about three months.

IDEA TO STEAL ‘Instal a mix of lighting to suit different moods’
WOOD EFFECT ‘There’s something so cosy about piles of logs in the winter. I keep a basketful here and lots more in the other, disused fireplace’
ROOM DIVIDER ‘Putting the sofa here works perfectly to zone the long, open-plan room, and it’s so cosy when there’s a log fire burning’

HEART OF THE HOME ‘Another cost-saving trick was to buy our units in the sale from DIY Kitchens and the oak worktops from eBay, rather than purchasing an all-in-one kitchen’
IDEA TO STEAL ‘Save money with click-together flooring instead of real woodÕ
TEA BREAK ‘When designing the layout, we made sure we had plenty of cupboard storage, so the open shelves are just to display my fun accessories’
that we most loved creating. The original space was U-shaped and tiny, plus the units were old-fashioned and weren’t really worth keeping. When we first saw the house we knew we would be able to extend into the garage, so we decided to knock it down with a view to creating a large, sociable kitchen space, a downstairs loo and a utility to hide away the less attractive white goods. Because we built on the existing footprint, it wasn’t classed as an extension so we didn’t need planning permission, which made things easier. And as we’ve got off-street parking, removing the garage didn’t feel like a huge loss. We sited the dining area in the rear of the living room, so we didn’t need space for a table in the kitchen and I’d always wanted an island, so we designed the room with this in mind. Originally, I’d wanted a stable door, but once we began the design we decided bifolds would work much better instead

RUSTIC APPEAL ‘We used brick slips from Al Murad in the oven alcove because they were cheaper than real bricks and also easier to install’
OFF-CUT SHELVES ‘Chris made the shelves out of oak left over from the worktops. I love the curved detail of the wooden brackets – people liked them so much that he now sells them’
HIDDEN GEM ‘I hate the look of plug sockets so we put them out of sight under the kitchen unit, with a hole at the back of the worktop for cords to go through’

TONGUE-ANDGROOVE PANELLING
SERENE SPACE ‘The spare room already had the roof window in place, but we had to add stairs to get up here. It was quite a difficult space to get right, but it’s a lovely room now so was worth the effort’
1First, decide what height you’d like the panelling to reach up the wall – halfway, three quarters or floor-to-ceiling. Panelling up to dado-rail height is often the most popular choice. 2 Fix horizontal battens to the wall to nail your panels to. You’ll need three battens for dado-height panelling – one at floor level, one level with the top of the panelling and one mid way. 3 Secure one panel at a time, using a spirit level to ensure it’s straight. For a neat finish, hammer nails in at an angle through the tongue into the batten behind, before adding your next panel. That will ensure all the nails are hidden in the grooves. 4 Once all your panels are fitted, add a length of trim across the top edge to neaten it up. Finally, add a new length of skirting board across the bottom of the panelling.
3D GALLERY WALL ‘Rather than a display of photo frames, I added another dimension with hanging objects’
and so we now have a lovely view out to the garden. The kitchen build itself happened fairly organically and once we took the garage ceiling down, we loved the airy roof space left behind, so instead of replacing it we kept the space open and installed wooden ceiling trusses.
A team effort Although the initial building work was messy with long days and nights, the hard work of the build ran smoothly, helped by both our dads and my mum and sister, who got stuck in with painting and decorating. We are so lucky to have friends in the trades, too, which kept us on budget. Chris’s best friend is an electrician, another fitted the carpets, and another did the plumbing, so it feels like so many loved ones have helped renovate this house and Chris has returned the favours in kind with his carpentry skills.

and flicking through magazines before we started the work, so I had a good idea of the style we were going for.
We both love oak features so it was a given that they would form the basis of the decoration; the main architectural element we fitted was the oak truss framework in the kitchen, which we complemented with oak windowsills, kitchen worktops and shelves, all made by Chris (which was a huge help on such a strict budget). Finding cost-effective options was also high on the agenda, so we always checked the price of things online before buying anything that we saw on the high street.
