Book! PROFESSIONAL PORTAFOLIO FELIPE GARCIA RIESCO

This portfolio comprises all work done since my student period to the present time. These are separated in three groups:

+ The Student Work + The Contests + The Professional Work

Each group is presenting the most representative works done in different areas of design; from squared and simple forms to round complex structural forms. Developing different types of projects in scale, type and complexity showing a game between spaces and design.

CHURCH IN THE CURRUCHET HOUSE LA PLATA, ARGENTINA

Le Corbusier designed various projects in Latin America, but only one house was constructed in La Plata, Argentina; this house was constructed in a calmed neighborhood in front of a square so it was the perfect place for a reunion . The commission for this project was to redesign the house and convert the space into a church that could unite the people of the neighborhood into a holy space. The scales The Divine scale, the Earthly scale and the People scale The work of the light was specially taken care in this church in order to emphasize the three different scales The light inside of the church changes according to the peoples gestures, which changes during the mass times. The tree behind the altar means life and makes the three scales to gather into the life.

OFFICE BUILDING RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA

For this assignment it was given a block of office buildings and the assignment is to redesign this office building into a hot and dry climate and to make it use the least amount of energy for its comfort in this climate. The biggest problem to overcome in Riyadh is the extreme hot during the complete years, which are intensified with the addition of big sand storms that drives hot air inside the city, making the natural ventilation very difficult. In order to achieve a better performance it was used different solutions that would allow decreasing the amount of direct solar radiation and wall materials that would not retain the solar heat. It was also used a series of passive solutions that were obtained from the local vernacular architecture to improve the ventilation system by using wind towers to cool down the incoming wind, and to decrease the direct solar radiation by using solar shadings and spherical roofs. With all these solutions, it was possible to obtain a decrease of 60% in the energy loads if the building is compared to a conventional building.

SEPARATION AND TETRAPAK RECYCLING CENTER SANTIAGO DE CHILE

After investigating the cycle of the garbage in Santiago it was clear that the city needs a solution to improve their recycling rate from a pale 5%. It was proposed a Separation and Recycling center, located in the south of the city close to the main recycling industries. The particularity of this center is that it uses the gravity as the main source of energy, that way the project is saving big amounts of energy by using an inexhaustible source of energy. In the same way the project cover is made to receive the maximum amount of indirect light depending on the needs of the particular activity that is being developed in the recycling plant, making the roof to allow more light to enter where the activity most needs it without being an inconvenience to workers

SCIENTISTS SHELTER FOR ARTIC RESEARCH NORTH POLE

The brief of the contest required for us to design a shelter that would be an itinerant research base for scientists in the North Pole. The idea of this research center is to conserve the heat produced by the occupants and the equipment that is used on the daily living in the shelter. For this it was proposed a simple structure that could be transported on sleds pulled by wolves or by helicopters. This structure functions with its environment, hiding underneath the snow for the snow storms and floating in case of ice melting Besides the thermal insulation this structure would use the air and the snow from the surrounding as part of the shelter’s thermal core and serve as insulation for the internal spaces to provide the desired thermal comfort.

POSTER FOR THE XVI ARCHITECTURE BIENNIAL SANTIAGO, CHILE

The XIV Biennale of Architecture of Santiago started a new horizon on the Chilean constructions by highlighting the commitment of the built environment with nature. In order to show this commitment and this new path the Chilean Architectural Association decided to call for entries in a competition to design the poster for the XIV Biennale of Architecture with the slogan : “For an Architecture that takes care of our Earth The competition attracted more than 400 entries which ended up having 3 prizes and two honourable mentions; one of this lasts awarded to our group. Our honourable mention for this poster represented an abstraction of how the constructed environment starts turning into a more nature-like ambient.

HONOURABLE MENTION - AWARDED POSTER

GIRLS FOSTER HOME SCHOOL SANTIAGO, CHILE

The Girls Foster Home School today has 200 girl students that live with the minimum amenities, in very high density dormitories having cold during the winter and hot during summer with the minimum access of light. The proposal was to extend the school making new homes for the girls adjusting them to the new educational standards. These standards require the girls to have more independence over their life while they are not in the classrooms, for this it was proposed 10 houses configured in pairs that would give them the desired independence and will form groups of support in between them by generating these relations of pairs in between the groups. The proposal considers that every house will maximize the solar absorption during winter and the shading from the sun during the warmer season, reducing the discomfort of the girls during the complete year without the need of using additional energy to provide thermal comfort.

3

HOUSE EXTENSION LA CALERA, CHILE

This project is part of Chilean national social housing initiatives to provide housing extensions for the social housing neighbors. Through the program, it was possible to provide house extensions to more than 250 families, increasing the house constructed area in a 50% The project required managing more than 250 families, the construction companies, and the government. The most important was to organize the demand of families, to direct them and help them to design a solution for their future living. This project was evaluated as one of the best housing solutions of the fifth region getting recognition from the Ministry of Housing and Urbanism because of its quantity and quality.

ECOLOCAFE VALPARAISO, CHILE

A client contacted us because she wanted to refurbish a 1950’s house that is on a hill of the touristy city of Valparaiso on the Chilean coastline and convert it into a cafe with a bed & breakfast service. The dream of the owner was to have an ecological and sustainable cafe that she could manage while looking at the Pablo Neruda’s House and to see the sunshine at the Valparaiso bay. The design of these cafe was to have different spaces on the three floors all connected by a visual path that would be remarked by a wooden floor circulation and a rhythm of colours. The importance of Valparaiso is the view that it has over the bay, so this was the most important factor that was emphasized and how the house was going to interact with the coastline and its climate having the best internal comfort as possible in passive ways.
