Experimental Jetset Marieke Stolk Danny van den Dungen Erwin Brinkers Jan Hanzenstraat 37/1 1053 SK Amsterdam The Netherlands First, a short bit about ourselves. We are Experimental Jetset, a small, independent graphic design studio based in Amsterdam, consisting of three persons: Marieke Stolk, Danny van den Dungen and Erwin Brinkers. We have been collaborating as Experimental Jetset since we graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (in 1997, 1997 and 1998 respectively), and in our work we focus mostly on printed matter. We often describe graphic design as “turning language into objects.

Studio Beige

Who we are Studio Beige is a Rotterdam-based design studio founded in 2003, specialising in concept, strategy and design. We focus on printed matter as well as webdesign and count among our clients commercial and non-profit organisations both large and small. We create visual identities, bookdesigns, magazines, campaigns and websites. At Studio Beige we cherish a love for typography, which tends to show in just about anything we do. Moreover we like to use unusual materials and apply special techniques. As a result we deliver striking, tactile and highly communicative designs. What we do We like to keep things clear. We work hard to find out what makes our clients tick. We also work hard to listen and subsequently analyse and definine the problems posed. We work even harder to translate this information into a relevant, well-thought-out design as well as an accurately manufactured product. What we don’t do • Give up when our initial proposals aren’t met with enthusiasm • Assume we know better (although occasionally we do) • Make promises we can’t keep • Take ourselves too seriously (although occasionally we do) How we go about it Typical of the way we work is that we ask questions, take time to listen and ascertain facts. Our creative process departs from research and strategy. The clearer we define a project, the better the results will be. What we think is important Creating beautiful designs. Every single decision we make during the creative process originates from the desire to deliver beautiful designs. We achieve this by operating in small teams and keeping the lines of communication with our clients short and clear. Not only does this contribute to a sound collaberation with our clients, it’s also essential when you’re aiming for the best possible design. When do we involve others There’s always a possibility that at some point certain ideas and needs are articulated that might require additional skills or more manpower. That’s why we collaborate with a select group of professionals such as photographers, illustrators, copywriters and web developers who are dedicated to their profession and understand what we think is important. Spin

Spin has won numerous awards nationally and internationally, though our primary focus is always on ensuring the successful outcome of the individual commissions we undertake, not on adding trophies to our shelves.

Our studio culture is vibrant and we actively involve ourselves in promoting graphic design and raising awareness about the subject through lectures and the books we publish through Unit Editions, a publishing company we set up in 2008. Spin founder and Creative Director Tony Brook is a member of AGI – a professional body comprising the world’s leading graphic designers.

Our clients come from many different sectors. They range from the global to the local. Similarly, the projects we undertake are diverse, and range from the small to the monumental.

In counterpoint to these traditional virtues, our collaborative process promotes experimentation. We see it as a fundamental requirement that we push beyond the boundaries of the commissions we receive to make impactful and effective outcomes and add measurable value.

A growing proportion of our work is made for the screen – websites, broadcast sequences and films. Yet in many respects, Spin is a traditional design studio. We value intelligent creative thinking and demand high levels of craft and finishing, and we always meet deadlines.

We make thoughtful and apposite responses to the needs of our clients. Our work is designed to function across all applications – digital, analogue and environmental. Our creations are always bespoke and often involve specifically developed typefaces and marques.

It’s an approach that has led to lasting, fruitful relationships valued as much by boutique businesses as it is by global brands.

Browns Browns Five Plantain Place Crosby Row London SE1 1YN From a pop-up tavern in the Graphic Design Museum in Breda to a special edition conceptual tome: Browns’ forward-thinking approach and handling of work is like no other independent design studio. Since its founding in 1998 Browns has created work with weight and cultural significance. Purposefully side-stepping the tidal trends of stylised design, the studio tenders a fresh aesthetic, applying an artist’s sensibility to a two- and three-dimensional design context. The studio abstracts stimulation from all strands of culture and our commonplace surroundings, to produce sensitive work with a purity of form that has a shared relationship to the world around it. The spirit of Browns is encompassed by its founder, Jonathan Ellery, a conceptual artist who creates thoughtprovoking, narrative-based works through an assortment of materials. The studio also has its own publishing house, Browns Editions, which, since its founding in 2005, has designed and published collectable printed matter, sustaining the tradition of print and book art in a 21st century arena. It is this synthesis of studio, publishing house and conceptual artist, together with an overview from creative director Claire Warner, that strengthens all in-house creativity, crafting a contemporary design studio that functions like no other. Browns, Browns Editions and Jonathan Ellery reside down a cobbled path in south-east London.
