Dear Vermont Academy Community, We are a small school that is tenacious. There is momentum and energy on campus brought about by students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni β all driven by the pillars of our new Strategic Plan: Independence, Ingenuity, Community, and the Land. In the face of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we are continuing strong. Adaptive policies and practices preserve the health and safety of our community. Ninety-eight percent of our population is vaccinated. Weekly, campus-wide PCR testing has become part of our regular routine. Athletic competition against Lakes Region schools has returned to our fields, our trails, our gym, and our rink. Physical activity is a key part of the daily lives of our students and keeps the importance of educating the whole student β body, mind, spirit β front and center. At the heart of everything is The Vermont Academy Way. Vermont Academy teachers believe that the value of learning and knowledge cannot be fully realized if confined to the traditional classroom alone. We cultivate a learning environment where our studentsβ individuality and ingenuity, our land, and our community liberate learning and knowledge for use in life. There is, in The Vermont Academy Way, a stability that we are lacking in so many aspects of our lives. We teach students to discover their innate skills and passions and how to adapt, create and build their futures, according to their best hopes and dreams. We are proud of the ways in which our close-knit community has continued to support students who were not thriving elsewhere. We continue to teach them how to be βtrue to their best selves.β
At the heart of everything is The Vermont Academy Way. Vermont Academy teachers believe that the value of learning and knowledge cannot be fully realized if confined to the traditional classroom alone. We cultivate a learning environment where our studentsβ individuality and ingenuity, our land, and our community liberate learning and knowledge for use in life. β β DR. JENNIFER L. ZACCAR A, Head of School
Last year, our generous community contributed more than $1.4 million to our critical mission, breaking prior records. This brings the total of gifts and pledges in the We Ascend Together Campaign to $4.3 million. Our endowment stands just north of $13 million. These gifts directly impact our students as they enhance independent learning opportunities, outdoor programming, social and emotional learning, STEM education, and entrepreneurship β all through the lenses of multicultural and design thinking processes. My sincere thanks go to all of you who are supporting these efforts. I am proud of the enduring strengths of our community and the emerging opportunities that help us achieve our goal of making Vermont Academy the best small boarding school in New England. With warm regards,

My years at Vermont Academy were incredible, with fantastic friends, academic challenges, and both athletic and artistic opportunities. The skills I learned at VA were instrumental in my successes in college and have given me the courage to take a leap of faith in changing fields for graduate school.β β CAITLYN MCDERMOTT β18
The holistic approach the school brings to the table definitely influenced our child to open up and expand her horizons when it comes to approaching new things and interacting with different people. It was rewarding for us to see her blossom into this aspiring young person who can be a leader and have an impact on the community and those around her.β βBOBBY HAWKINS P β23

We are a tightly woven community with a concern for taking care of each other. I feel that my opinions and choices are taken into consideration. The Winter Carnival is a perfect example of one of the beautiful moments we experience as a community every year. The bonfires with marshmallows and sβmores are a great time to gather on weekend nights. We are blessed to be surrounded by such an incredible and safe environment.β

I am forever thankful and grateful to Vermont Academy for raising my family. But, in some ways, Iβm even more thankful to VA for raising so many others. As a longtime faculty member, Iβve been able to bear witness to some of the beautiful stories of students becoming the best versions of themselves. Students who found the courage to come out to this community. Students who, for the first time, felt safe at school. Students who didnβt have parents but found a campus to take care of them. Students who thought they were athletes and turned into artists, or students who thought they were artists and turned into athletes, or students who knew their potential but needed help to go the NBA, or start their own business, or launch their music career. Students whoβve struggled academically then score in the top of their class. Students who were told theyβd never learn a language and then become fluent. Students who didnβt love themselves started to love themselves, students who didnβt have a voice and not only found their own but helped amplify others. VA raises good people and I invest in this community because I believe in what we do.β β AMANDA GILBERT-HODGSON P β21, β25

I came to Vermont Academy in the Fall of 2008. Prior to my arrival, I attended three different high schools in three years, all in different towns and in two different states. Needless to say, I felt unsettled and without community. More than a school, Vermont Academy gave me a feeling of stability. Vermont Academy became and still is a place I think of as home. Hanging out in the dorms, wandering the trails behind Chivers, hanging out in the basement of Shepardson, the weekly stroll down to the market. VA was my life and I loved every second! Now, almost 12 years removed from my attendance, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that I would not be where I am without VA.β β CAMERON SCULLY-RAMIREZ β10

I loved my time at VA, and I gave it everything I had. The campus itself was the most beautiful playground. The beautiful fall leaves, the ski hill all lit up at night as students skied into dinner, the first spring days when we all could eat and play outside of Shep. I remember every moment that I fell in love with VA, and I am endlessly grateful for the faculty. They empowered me and pushed me to be my best self. I remember the magical feeling of being a student at VA and I sincerely hope that as many kids as possible can experience that magic too.β β EDDIE MILLER β15

ermont Academy holds a special place in my heart. I grew up in V Saxtons River and in Vermont Academy housing as my parents were dorm parents. It was a unique experience to say the least. Though I graduated in 2000, with my parents teaching at VA, my brother and sister both graduating from VA, and the extended family of the many dorm kids I grew up with, I feel like Iβm a partial member of every graduation year from 1989 through 2005.
