Message from the President Dear CAP Family, Once again we gather to celebrate our wonderful profession, and the greatness that is encapsulated into the Caribbean Association of Pharmacists. We come together in person, after being confined to the virtual realm for over a year. And while the Conference experience is sure to be different, I trust that it will be no less valuable and cherished, as we interact with each other. As this is my last meeting as President, I have prepared a farewell message for distribution, so allow me to focus this message on our theme and accomplishments for the past year. Our theme for this 41 st Annual Convention and Annual General Meeting is “Pharmacy Practice: Exploring New Horizons in a Changing World” is such an appropriate mantra for our profession at this time. As the world around us seems to shake and shift at every turn, and in particular, healthcare goes through seismic changes on a daily basis, now more than ever, pharmacists are needed to provide the service, products and proper information that are essential to the optimal care of our patients. We must take our challenges and from them create opportunities that thrust our roles and responsibilities into new avenues of service, profitability and sustainability. Necessity has always been the mother of invention, and pharmacists are proving our necessity every day. CAP has utilized new pathways for communication, collaboration and education over the past year. Four meetings and continuing education sessions were held from our last conference, and led by our amazing Education Committee, the CAP Zoom format has become the example of how efficient and productive meetings can be accomplished. This year we proudly introduced seventeen (17) new presenters to the CAP Family, and they have done well in their initial voyages. The CAP Corporate Partner Relations Committee has worked overtime to ensure and expand the valuable relationships that sustain the fiscal health of the Association. Our Student Relations Committee has continued to be a leader in productivity, and we had our largest participation of students in CAP this past year. In fact, CAP has seen an increase in membership over the past 5 years, which is a testament to the continued growth and value that members are enjoying. Later this year, under the oversight of IPP Yvonne Reid, CAP will release a brand new publication on the history of the Association and Caribbean Pharmacy in general. I could continue with the various accolades to the work and productivity of CAP this past year, but it all is clearly evident, and thanks must be given to my hard-working Executive Committee, who have stood and worked with me throughout all the difficulties and challenges. It’s been a joy to work with them for this term. So as we gather together in paradise, whether in-person or in virtual reality, we remain most importantly…TOGETHER! We must remain united not only in profession, but in our collective purpose to make this world a healthier and happier place. We must boldly move into the new horizons we will face, and remember that together, we can accomplish anything. I thank the Creator for blessing us with another CAP Conference, and pray for His blessing to envelope our deliberations, decisions and fellowship
Marvin R. Smith, PharmD C.A.P. President (2018-2021)

“Pharmacy Practice: Exploring New Horizons in a Changing World”
Message from the President It is noted in he Bahamas that, “Once is not enough, even twice you won't see all of the stuff…” Therefore, it is my esteemed privilege, as President of The Bahamas Pharmaceutical Association, to welcome the Caribbean Association of Pharmacists executive team, delegates and sponsors back to beautiful Nassau, Bahamas, for its 41st annual convening of Pharmacists. The theme, “Pharmacy Practice: Exploring New Horizons in a Changing World.” is a timely theme; ever more profound given the current climate that we all have weathered in the COVID-19 Pandemic. As healthcare professionals, we are battling this deadly virus to protect ourselves, safeguard our families and tend to the sick. Exploring New Horizons in a Changing World suggests that our goal is to pioneer new pathways to open new horizons in pharmacy practices in this already-changed world. Like many of my fellow colleagues, I too have had to shift my old way of thinking & rise to the occasion to continue providing essential services to our community while ensuring that those that I serve are engaged in the new virtual modes of pharmaceutical learning, in order to keep abreast of the ever-changing COVID-19 treatment guidelines. BPA has maintained our commitment to supporting and assisting the Government of the Bahamas from the inception of the vaccination campaign to eradicate COVID19 within the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, one jab at a time. We have had to implement new ways of thinking, initiate new modes of operation, apply new technological practices & even explore numerous avenues of cyber & mobile operation in order to carry out a job that was once for many so streamlined & well-orchestrated. Though difficult at times, we rallied through after being tried & tested as a result, it is my belief that we are all better pharmacists, technicians & better individuals because of it. It is my sincere hope that the progress we have made in the pharmaceutical field will continue to gain momentum as we strive to move “Forward, Upward, Onward, Together” as is the motto of this great nation that I call home. Allowing us to go further, dig deeper, rise higher & boldly go where the pharmacy field has never been before. I thank each of you represented here today for your continued commitment to ensuring the safety, heath & wellbeing of those we serve even in such difficult times for pharmacy workers & healthcare professionals. Enjoy this week’s activities as we impart some of what we have learned to revolutionize our community lives. Once again welcome to the beautiful islands of The Bahamas Yours Faithfully,
Shantia K. Hield-McBride Shantia K. Hield-McBride, RPh. BSc. President, B.P.A.

Introducing the 2021 Afzal Abdool Scholarship Awardee JORDAN R. RITCHIE Jordan R. Ritchie is a Bahamian Pharmacy Intern and soon-to-be graduate of The University of Technology, Jamaica who has been in the illustrious industry of Pharmacy for the past thirteen years. Jordan has worked in the role as a pharmacy assistant, pharmacy technician, and now as a pharmacy intern preparing to be licensed by The Bahamas Pharmacy Council. He is an alumnus of Saint Augustine’s College, Nassau, Bahamas where he graduated from High School. He is also an alumnus of Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in Psychology. As an advocate for patient care and education, Jordan wished to become a clinical pharmacist and aims to work within the country to aid in the development of pharmaceutical care for his fellow Bahamians. When asked why he chose pharmacy, Jordan states that: “Pharmacy presents an opportunity that few professions can give. It is the amalgamation of medicine, business, and hospitality and so much more in one. Pharmacy gives an opportunity each day to become better at a new skill and to develop in ways that other professions do not allow. From the age of fourteen when I started interning in the pharmacy, I always woke up happy for the opportunity to work in a pharmacy. Pharmacy gives you the opportunities to not only help in the treatment of conditions but also allows you to get to know your patients beyond their conditions. The amount of knowledge I have gained from first working in the pharmacy community is insurmountable and priceless, and yet the profession has so much more to offer and there are so many areas I have yet to learn of. I desire to continue in pharmacy and to advance myself to enhance the level of knowledge I can instill in others and enhance the strength of the healthcare community that I serve.” Jordan participates in the Caribbean Association of Pharmacists as a Student Member, and was a breakout group leader in the 2021 Student Leadership and Research Symposium. His response upon being selected as the 2021 Afzal Abdool Student Leadership Award is: “It’s humbling to have been selected for this honour, named after an icon of Caribbean Pharmacy. I’m proud to represent The Bahamas, as a pharmacy-intern, and making final preparations to fully join the profession that I love. I want to thank the Abdool family, the Caribbean Association of Pharmacists, my QVS Pharmacy family, and my loved ones who have supported me through this journey. I hope to live up to the potential that is within me, and continue to make an effective impact in this profession.” Congratulations to the 2021 Afzal Abdool Student Leadership Award winner…Jordan Ritchie.
