Vision

The Vernon Public Art Gallery will broaden its connections within the community and become a critically acclaimed regional art gallery

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The cultural referendum, which gave the green light for a new, purpose built cultural facility, was a galvanizing force among voters and candidates throughout the 2018 civic election. The clear victor was the local cultural community, and that victory just goes to show how much momentum for this project has been building over time. I’d like to thank the staff and volunteers who managed to pull together a successful vote within such a short timeline leading up to the election. The VPAG is in a healthy position as we move into 2019. Visitations and membership levels have remained consistent and the staff has been actively implementing operational efficiencies and a funding plan to prepare us for the transition and growth that the new cultural facility will provide. To lead the future direction of this transition, the board of directors is currently engaged in the strategic planning process ensuring that the VPAG will be well aligned for change.

It has been a terrific year, and the future holds nothing but promise. But... there is still much work to be done. Now is our time and we need everyone (including you!) to help us push this project through to its completion. A capital campaign is on the horizon and we are looking for individuals to get involved on our various committees. Please do what you can to make this new cultural facility a reality for our community! Call the gallery today 250-545-3173 or email our Executive Director Dauna Kennedy at dauna@vernonpublicartgallery.com.

It was a big year at the Vernon Public Art Gallery in 2018. Reaching my 10-year milestone as Executive Director this year, I was thrilled to celebrate it with passing of our Cultural Centre Referendum on October 20! So many people have been involved in recognizing our dire need and pushing the initiative for a new facility forward— our combined efforts have finally paid off. There is still a considerable amount of work to do with the launch of a capital fundraising campaign and the process for a final building design, but we have the support of the community behind us and are well on our way. Thank you to everyone who helped us to reach this point.

ensure our operational foundation is solid as we move into the final phases of the facility development and transition. During 2018, the VPAG secured funding for one co-op student to conduct a thorough review of our permanent collection and an intern to create a fund development plan for gallery operations.

I’d like to say a special thank you to my gallery team. The short window we were given to conduct our vote yes campaign meant that much of my focus was diverted away from regular operations. The staff all pulled together not only to help with the campaign, but to ensure our programming was not impacted. I am very proud to work with such a dedicated team.

We received a large number of acquisitions to our permanent collection in 2018 thanks to generous donations from artists and the Acton Acquisition fund. Through our partnership in the Okanagan Print Triennial, our acquisition committee has placed a focus on printmaking within our collection to accompany other contemporary works.

In preparation of moving to the new facility, the VPAG has been working behind the scenes on improving systems for operational efficiencies and conducting reviews of our permanent collection and organizational policies. We feel it is important to

Our Art Education has continued to grow in popularity and is up an additional 30% over last year. With the continued growth in this program, the VPAG is seeking additional grant funds to allow us to expand in order to meet demand and position us for the future.

6

I encourage you to read our Curatorial Report by Lubos Culen to learn more about our 2018 exhibitions and the focus of the gallery’s curatorial program over the past year. The VPAG also produced 6 ISBN registered publications to accompany its exhibitions and further the dialogue of critical content.

The VPAG was successful in receiving grants from the following funders during 2018: · Regional District of the North Okanagan · BC Arts Council (including the creation of 1 temporary position) · Province of British Columbia · Canadian Heritage (for the creation of 3 temporary positions) · BC Museums Association

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I would like to sincerely thank our members, donors, and sponsors for their generosity and recognition of the philanthropic need of the gallery. Please refer to page 40 for a complete list of our supporters and funding agencies. Together we create the opportunities for critical and innovative thought for all demographics in the North Okanagan. Thank you for your commitment and support. Dauna Kennedy Executive Director

On October 20, 2018 the Regional District of the North Okanagan cast 7,850 ’yes’ votes to pass the Cultural Centre Referendum.

THE FUTURE VPAG

The new facility, anchored by the Vernon Public Art Gallery and the Greater Vernon Museum and Archives, will provide Vernon and our surrounding communities with a beautiful purpose-built space to better house and display historically and culturally significant works. We look forward to serving our community with larger galleries, dedicated education spaces, more publiclyaccessible spaces and a stunning new building for the entire community.

MESSAGE FROM THE CURATOR The VPAG strives to organize meaningful exhibitions and programing that address various issues in the current contemporary art practices in Canada and internationally. The VPAG’s curatorial research advances conceptual contributions towards creating new critical content of contemporary art practices in Canada and internationally. In 2018, the VPAG organized 18 exhibitions and presented exhibitions by established senior and midcareer Canadian artists complemented by communitybased exhibitions including elementary and high school students’ work, local First Nations arts collective, and emerging artists graduating from the BFA program at the UBCO. Additional exhibition opportunities are offered annually to the gallery members. The gallery organized exhibitions featuring a variety of media including video, installations, site-specific installation, printmaking, drawing, collage, and painting. The gallery’s focus on the presentation of contemporary artistic production was realized in the site-specific installation produced by Calgary-based Derek Besant. The installation of large-scale digital paintings by Kelowna-based Myron Campbell was designed to incite a public dialogue about how the development in urban and rural areas contribute to the 10

displacement and loss of natural ecosystems. An additional exhibition of experimental printmaking by Edmonton-based Sean Caulfield was exhibited based on the gallery’s focus to feature one printmaking exhibition a year since the inception of the Okanagan Print Triennial in 2009. Ongoing partnerships and collaboration with several institutions which include the Vernon Regional Library, Mackie Lake House Foundation, Vernon Film Society, and Department of Creative Studies at the UBC Okanagan, allowed the Gallery to reach wider audiences through organizing and hosting long and short term exhibitions at the Gallery and in public spaces. In addition to the Gallery’s focus on educational values, the exhibitions presented at the Gallery are aimed at increasing the development of artistic potential and professionalism of artists. The Gallery offers guidance for local and emerging artists with the development of exhibition submission packages, artist statements, exhibition layout and artwork presentations. The Gallery invites community participation through exhibitions, lectures, workshops, artist talks, and guided exhibition tours.

The VPAG is pleased to offer educational programming to the public. Our Curator and Education Coordinator deliver these programs with an emphasis on the interpretation, contextual significance, and the artwork’s placement within Canadian historical and contemporary art practices.

Our 2018 public programs ranged from monthly drop-in workshops to semi-regular artist talks and community roundtables. By establishing diverse and engaging programs that are open to the general public we strive to encourage curiosity and creativity in Vernon. The VPAG offers programming for audiences of all ages and aims to keep program fees low or free to remain as accessible as possible for all community members. Staff, summer students, interns, and volunteers from the community worked together to produce another beautiful event at Turtle Mountain Vineyards. With the generosity of 61 contributing artists and 79 donors, the VPAG raised $62,000.00! Many thanks to all who contributed to the event, a complete list of partners and donors is included on page 41 . Riot on the Roof, our largest event, brought together a unique mix of visual artists, performance artists, musicians, art installations, and street artists for a colourful and transformative evening in the downtown Vernon Parkade.
