VERNON PUBLIC ART GALLERY

AUGUST/ OCTOBER 2016

VOL. 25, NO. 4

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

T

he 30th Anniversary of Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts was a magical evening. Some memorable moments include the beautiful weather, smiling faces and winning cheers ringing out from the auction. With a capacity crowd, the Vernon Public Art Gallery was able to raise in excess of $51,000 which is critical to our ongoing public programming, art education and general operations. There are so many people to thank when putting on a charity event such as this and I encourage you to reach out and support all those participating businesses and individuals who all come together year after year to help make Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts the wonderful experience that it is. I’d like to highlight Bannister Honda, our presenting sponsor and KPMG our corporate sponsor for their significant financial contributions, as well as all of our artists, volunteers and of course our great staff who work over and above to help make this event happen. Well done to all and a heartfelt thank you. We are now looking forward to our upcoming exhibitions by local artist Julie Oakes titled Blue Tornado Redux, Malcolm McCormick’s Object Affection, Lucas Glenn The Big Bad, and Bio Diverse Ability by Cool Arts. Please join us on Thursday, July 28 from 6-8 p.m for the opening reception of these upcoming exhibitions. We have a range of programming lined up for the rest of the summer and fall, so please take a look at what we have scheduled and join us if you can. See you at the Gallery!

Dauna Kennedy, Executive Director

July 28 - Nov 5, 2016 Malcolm McCormick: Object Affection

Julie Oakes, a Vernon-based artist and gallerist, will exhibit a selection of works from her large sculptural installation originally exhibited at the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery in Waterloo, Ontario. This exhibition will feature three installation-type multimedia sculptural works installed as individual stand-alone pieces which address ecological issues and concerns.

Originally from Kelowna, Malcolm McCormick is currently a Vancouver based artist focused on the production of non-objective painting. His exhibition addresses issues of representation, abstraction, and materiality in contemporary painting.

Your Invited to the Opening Reception The Board of Directors and Executive Director, Dauna Kennedy Grant, invite you and a guest to the opening reception of Blue Tornado Redux by Julie Oakes, Object Affection by Malcolm McCormick, The Big Bad by Lucas Glenn, and Bio Diverse Ability by Cool Arts at the Vernon Public Art Gallery. EXHIBITIONS

Lucas Glenn, Construction Yard Scraps, 2014, multi-media installation

Cool Arts program participants, 2016

July 28 - Nov 5, 2016 Lucas Glenn: The Big Bad

July 28 - Oct 5, 2016 Cool Arts: Bio Diverse Ability

Kelowna-based artist Lucas Glenn’s sculptural installation contains found objects and assemblages which create an autonomous space within the gallery space. The conglomeration of objects and text and their implied meaning address the issues of societal history. Glenn’s installation creates a narrative about the existence, practices, and ecological impact of large companies and wildlife conservation.

The Kelowna-based Cool Arts is a support group for variously abled individuals whose primary focus is art education and art practice through process oriented and experiential activities. The exhibition Bio Diverse Ability is the result of a project guided by a professional artist where the works were created by the participants over the period of several months.

Upcoming Artist Talks Join us for an Artist Talk with Lucas Glenn on The Big Bad on Saturday September 17th at 1 p.m. Enjoy coffee, tea, cookies and great conversation. This is your chance to meet Lucas Glenn and learn more about how The Big Bad ties into natural resource industry practices and wildlife conservation in B.C.

Join us for an Artist Talk and Catalogue Launch with Julie Oakes on Blue Tornado Redux on Thursday September 22nd at 7 p.m. Enjoy light refreshments, coffee, tea and punch. This is your chance to meet Julie, and learn more about Blue Tornado Redux, and how long it took her to create all the bats and birds in the exhibition.
