VERNON PUBLIC ART GALLERY

MAY / JULY 2018 VOL. 27, NO. 3

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

I

t is my pleasure to welcome back Canadian artist, Derek Michael Besant to the Vernon Public Art Gallery with his latest exhibition The Dark Woods (Revisited). Recognized internationally for his large-scale photo-based works we are thrilled to bring work of this caliber to the North Okanagan. The VPAG is pleased to present Emergence, an exhibition derived from a selection of students who are part of the UBC Okanagan BFA graduating class of 2018. Artists Moozhan Ahmedzadegan (painting/collagefigurative), Arden Boehm (sculpture/installation), Mat Glenn (printmaking), Sarah Kapp (painting-geometric abstraction) and Kara Sikpra (sculpture/ installation) have contributed works from their studio practices during their final year of the BFA program. As an annual exhibition here at the VPAG, we are pleased to show-case the creative, dynamic work being produced locally at the post-secondary level. I’d like to welcome Alexanra Hlynka to the role of Art Educator/Admin Assistant while Kelsie Baleowsky is on maternity leave. Also joining the gallery team for the summer term are post-secondary students Carmen Winther and Peter Navratil. Please take the time to come in and meet these new additions to the staff. I’d also like to thank Karel Hanek for his work on our permanent collection during his co-op placement with us and wish him continued success in his future studies. Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts is fast approaching! Should you like to contribute to this important fundraising event beyond your attendance, please feel free to contact us regarding sponsorship or donation options. The success of this event is truly a group effort by all who contribute, so thank you in advance. As always, admission is by donation and we are open Monday-Saturday providing lots of opportunity to come in and immerse yourself in the current exhibitions.

Derek Besant stages a site-specific installation of printed shaped veils and a large scale 15-minute looping video projection. The out-of-focus closeup images of trees and forest flora create a dense visual environment for the viewers to decode possible hidden narratives suggested by text fragments incorporated in some images.

The exhibition Emergence is produced by selected graduating students from the UBC Okanagan BFA program. This exhibition consists of a selection of works of six emerging artists which include painting, screen printing, sculptural installation, photography and fibre art.
