Lean In To

Fall

Hello Fall! It’s time for changing leaves, sweaters and boots, cool evenings around the fire, and pumpkin spice everything! Whether you are into enjoying the great outdoors or admiring nature from your freshly organized living room, this issue has something for everyone. We hope that it can be a sunny spot in a rather dark time. As we round out a year of challenges, sorrow, frustration, and learning to embrace a new normal, I say let’s finish out strong with hope for the future. This year many of us have faced rock bottom, but as the saying goes, “It can only get better from here.” So let’s us face any obstacles or challenges in our way, and keep moving onward and upward into a brighter and better 2021. As always, Bowie, thank you for being with us and stay kind.

The JC Law Group, LLC Attorney Jessica Charles founded the firm in 2013 to help families with new practices, technology, and a new way of lawyering. Article by Alyson Turner Photography By Ro Moreno

philosophy courses at Prince George’s Community College for about 14 years, so I am happy to have gotten experience in both of my areas of study.

When did you open the practice? Why did you choose to practice in this area? I opened my office in Upper Marlboro in 2013 I live in the area and felt like this was a good location. It is in the middle of everything, right off the beltway. It’s also in a good physical location, on Apollo drive, just a short distance to the courthouse in Prince George’s County with easy access to other courts as well. I wanted to start a law firm, with new practices, new technology and a new way of lawyering. I started this journey by participating in various trainings and utilizing new resources to focus on enhancing the practice. The law is going to be very different in the next few years, so I wanted to make sure that I was well up to speed with the innovations in the legal tech world and how that could help potential clients. I primarily handle family cases, which can be

Attorney Jessica Charles is personable and approachable with a drive to help families navigate the legal system. We took some time to speak with her about her career in law, about her firm and about the services she offers.

What inspired you to go into law? Way back in the 90s, I was a graduate student of Philosophy & Social Policy at American University and I was trying to make a decision to pursue my doctorate degree or go into the law. While reflecting upon this decision, it hit me that I primarily wanted to inform the public of their rights and help them achieve just resolutions. I came to the decision that practicing law would allow me to allow people to see tangible results in the short term. Although the study of philosophy does inspire and influence beliefs, I knew the law would be more practical in helping someone’s day to day life so after receiving my M.A. I continued at American for law school. It gives me great satisfaction to assist those that have not been able to find the help they needed, and I was able to get them some relief. Fortunately, I was still able to teach some

challenging for many reasons. My goal and the whole purpose of building this firm is to show that there is a way to move forward and you will not be stuck forever, but sometimes you need help whether it is a lawyer or another professional. Once you take that first step, and then that next step, it gets easier to regain the sense of lost control or even freedom. That was how it was when I first started the firm, I took one step, and then another. You just keep going and going, and you hit new benchmarks. The work we do at the firm is to help you feel empowered even though you may be going through one of the most harrowing and exhausting experiences of your life.

How long have you worked in the field? I have been working in law for almost 20 years. I graduated law school in 2001, a few months before 9/11. I was very frozen in time for a while, a native New Yorker with family and friends in the area, it remains a difficult time to reflect upon. With respect to working, after 9/11 happened, there was a hiring freeze of sorts, so I ended up temping at a lot. I was October 2020 | 7

fortunate to have a long-term assignment, and then I started working in the DC government, and eventually I worked as a federal government contractor for several years. My goal had always been to go into the government or international relations work [which is why] it is interesting that I ended up doing primarily family law instead. I was not satisfied with my position and felt I was meant do more. The challenge to make a company, build something, and open a firm was intriguing to me. In hindsight it was crazy because I had no background running a business at the time, but in late 2012 I began working on building my firm.

family law related. The practice handles divorces, custody and child support matters, and fathers’ rights cases. I try to help the client that has been blindsided and doesn’t know where to go from there. It can be a very devastating situation for families, and we see that now especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What services do you offer?

Some of our most successful cases involve “Pre-Divorce Planning” - meaning we have discussions a year to a year and a half in advance to discuss what is going to happen when this occurs. If it goes well it can create a situation that is not as combative and result in an equitable settlement instead of a lengthy and costly trial.

The practice primarily handles Family Law cases; we do handle other matters on occasion, but the majority of our matters are

I am working on offering family mediation services as well, and hope to start handling those matters in the near future.

What makes The JC Law Group, LLC stand out? I believe I am always thinking outside of the box. Since I work primarily with families, there is no cookie-cutter solution. What may work for one family could be totally different for another. I work to guide a client through the process so that they see a clear resolution on the other side.

Can you share with us the advice that you might give to clients looking for legal counsel? I try to always remember that people want to be heard. When you schedule a consultation, you get an hour with me, and whether they hire me or not a potential client will always have the time to “tell me their story” and leave with guidance and some active steps they can take immediately. I try to help the client realize that there is a solution and that all hope is not lost so that they are “empowered-in control of the future” as our mission statement says. I want the client or potential client to feel that they have control of their future and they are not trapped despite what may be going on in the moment. I want to always be proud of my work and I want my clients to be proud of our process and our progress. I try to embody integrity, and honesty while being strategic with how to help someone proceed along the way. Something I say to people all the time, when asked, is that you need to feel comfortable with your lawyer. You are going to be dealing with this person for months or, in some cases, years. It is important that you do not just select a lawyer, but a lawyer in which you can develop a rapport with and that you trust.

BEYOND THE JOB I am a first generation American from New York/Northern New Jersey area originally and went to law school in DC. I came here in 1996 and I was fascinated with the area. I am New Yorker through and through, but the DC area has something special, and I knew I wanted to be a part of it, so I decided to stay upon graduation. My favorite sports teams are New York Teams. In my spare time I still read philosophy books, and keep up with that field. I have presented a few times at various regional academic conferences, which helps me focus on things outside the law. I like live music, even though we don’t have it right now. Before the pandemic, I liked going to outdoor music festivals and traveling. I enjoy going back up to New York & New Jersey regularly to spend time with my family. October 2020 | 9

Best Party From The Beltway To The Bay PartyHQ at the Bowie Town Center is the newest and the best family entertainment center around Article By Alyson Turner Photography By John Wardell

B

owie is an amazing place to live with gorgeous neighborhoods, and close to all the amenities you could ever need; entertainment, dining, shopping, and more. You may be thinking, how can it get any better than this? Well, things are about to get a whole lot more fun! PartyHQ at the Bowie Town Center is planning a soft opening for early October and hosting its Grand Opening Celebration for Halloween on October 31. Party HQ is a full-service, 2 level, 24,000 square foot, family-entertainment center that is a combination of all your favorite activities. Inside there is a 10lane boutique bowling alley, a Washington DC Battle-Themed State-of-the-art laser tag arena, tons of arcade games, and the newest in virtual reality technology in a game called Hologate. There is also a delicious, full-service restaurant and bar inside called The Parent Trap Bar & Grill. All of your funding can be loaded onto a play card including arcade games, bowling, food and drinks. As long as there is money on the card it can be used inside. This is a great feature for parents who want to ensure their kids have money for games and lunch all on one card. Owners Rodney Chambers and Ron Covington, said decided there is a need for this venue in the area. “We also own a successful government contracting firm, Advance Employee Intelligence. We are always going to different places with our kids like Dave & Busters, and Main Event. I saw a good way to open up our own family entertainment center that had everything in one location. We created a business plan, secured funding, created a tagline and made it happen,” Rodney tells us, “I named my kids junior owners and they are very proud. Our Junior Owners are Charles (11), Carlos (9) & Camar (8). We are teaching them entrepreneurship at an early age. This is our first location at Bowie Town Center, but we hope to open franchises of PartyHQ around the state.” The restaurant, bowling alley, laser tag and part of the arcade are on the first floor. On the newly created second floor is

additional arcade games and management offices. Ron says, “Hologate is the newest virtual technology out right now. There are only two of these in the State of Maryland. There are 7 different games on it, something for the whole family including a snowball game, cooking game, zombie game, and more.” Make sure you come to PartyHQ hungry. Rodney tells us, “The Parent Trap Bar & Grill” is a full-service restaurant and bar— American fare type food, wings, pizza, pasta, and steaks. We have a lot of great appetizers as well. We are also going to make our own hot fresh donuts. When you load up your play card you can use that for food, drinks, and games.” Along with open play, PartyHQ will be available for birthday parties, bachelor/bachelorette parties, graduations, and any other type of celebration that you can imagine. For safety precautions during the COVID-era, guests will be required to wear facemasks and there will be a limited occupancy. “We have a normal occupancy of 900 guests, but during this time we will be limiting patrons to 150 at a time, and patrons can make reservations online at www. gopartyhq.com for any activities they want to do at PartyHQ,” Rodney says. “I love the Bowie community. Bowie is going to be the best place to be the birthplace and home of PartyHQ. The Bowie community has been great with support, along with the Bowie Chamber of Commerce, Bowie Town Center, the Mayor and City Council. Everyone has been amazing. PartyHQ has good family fun during a time when many people are not traveling outside of their communities,” Rodney says, “You can do several different things under one roof; eat, drink and play and I think this is a good opportunity because [until now] Bowie didn’t have an entertainment center like this. We hope to provide world class customer service and an amazing experience for people of all ages.”

Love the great outdoors, but not a fan of roughing it? Glamour Camping or Glamping is the best of both worlds. Camping has long been an exciting adventure for both families and the solo traveler. You can enjoy going out into nature, seeing beautiful sights that you don’t get to enjoy in your daily life. Camping used to involve a tent, a backpack, and campfire. For those who prefer a little bit more luxury during their vacation the trend of Glamour + Camping (Glamping) is here to stay. According to Glamping.com, “It’s much more than a nice tent. The glamping movement is growing, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. Across the globe, you’ll find incredible destinations, each offering their own unique advantages. You can wake up in a yurt on a mountaintop. Reside in the forest canopy in a treehouse. Take in the panoramic views in an eco-lodge. And that’s just to name a few. Glamping today encompasses many accommodation experiences. Our collection of tents, villas, cabins, lodges, tipis and treehouses and more will encourage you to travel outside the norm.” Glamping allows you to revel in the joy of traveling and the peace of nature without having to “rough it” in the traditional way. Many campsites & resorts are offering glamping accommodations across the nation and around the world. A quick search for vacation rentals and AirBnBs shows a large array of glamping style tents and more. These luxurious quarters often include gorgeous views and an authentic connection to the surrounding area. If you are looking for the chance to get away, recharge your batteries, and enjoy a safe, socially distant vacation this fall, then glamping is the way to go. You can be one with the beauty of nature while having some of the comforts of home.

Salon Journey Salon Journey is the hair salon where families start and stay Article By Alyson Turner Photography By Ro Moreno

Salon Journey Owner Aja Nelson has a passion for serving. When clients come to her salon, they receive more than hair and scalp care, they are encouraged and supported in a variety of ways. Serving families and the community drives the vision for her salon “I started a business to make difference on a larger scale that couldn’t be done by myself alone. I’ve always had a dream of building a team to touch lives in an impactful way to help motivate, encourage and empower those around me. I enjoy being a role model, encouraging and supporting families and individuals. One thing I enjoy and look forward to the most is mentoring youth through different stages of their lives. At Salon Journey we encourage youth to dream big, make a plan, and pursue what their heart desires,” Aja says. Aja, a licensed stylist since 2007, opened Salon Journey on June 13, 2020. Aja tells us, “I have always done hair and wanted to work with children. This is a family service salon; serving generations of family from as young as age 2 through adulthood. I have a strong desire to serve and I find that I do this through hair in various communities.

A Tip From the Experts Hydrate, Shampoo, Exfoliate, Deep Condition and Trim is every strand’s perfect medication for a healthy head of hair.

[We see] the journey of life through hair, weddings, funerals, birthdays, cheer/dance competitions, graduations and life celebrations, I am there with them.” Salon Journey is a full-service salon that serves all textures of hair. “We do 90% of natural hair, protective styling, hair treatments and scalp care as well as relaxers and silk press. At Salon Journey we serve both children and adults. I have a family-friendly atmosphere and pride myself on catering to children. The salon is warm and welcoming with a lot of inspirational quotes all around. Our salon is a place where families get serviced together. Mommy and me make-overs are popular. We also do children styles for young men who have locs, twist or braids. We offer a variety of styles that cater to all hair care needs,” Aja says, “We use Influence Hair Care products, a black-owned company with a high-end natural, organic line that clients love and we sell for retail in the salon and online.” For COVID-19 precautions, everyone who comes in must wear a face mask. The stations are spaced apart so that clients are able to maintain social distance. All of the stylists are serving one client at a time, or one family at a time. Aja says, “This is not just because of COVID. We never double book or keep clients waiting. We pride ourselves on being on time and making sure individuals get the time and attention they need for a overall great salon visit. Your appointment time is your appointment time.” 20 | October 2020

Besides servicing families that come to the salon, Aja and Salon Journey continue to engage and serve the community. She offers classes to both youth and adults on protective styling techniques and hair and scalp maintenance. She has partnered with local organizations and charities such as youth dance and cheer teams, and youth recreational leagues to extended her services mentoring and styling. In November, Salon Journey is teaming up with local companies to sponsor food and coat drives. Classes offered are for tots, teens and young adults, letting them build both their entrepreneurial skills as well as technical hair skills. “We have a Mommy and Me class where the mom or child will service each other, they will learn how to properly style, detangle, condition, shampoo, and blow dry. We offer Journey Express 101 where individuals learn protective styling techniques and hair and scalp maintenance. There is also Journey Express Your Way which caters to individuals’ particular needs ,” Aja says. Salon Journey is a place for those seeking to build long lasting relationships that serves their families and partnerships in the community.. “The salon is so much more than just doing hair. It’s a joy for me to be able to give back and make an impact on those near and far from me.

How To Declutter Without

SACRIFICING

Things That You

Love 28 | October 2020

October 2020 | 29

HERE ARE SOME CREATIVE TIPS FOR DECLUTTERING 1. Start with one small space at a time. Are you guilty of tossing your shoes, coat, mail, and purse in your entry way when you arrive home? The first thing we see when we enter our homes can set us up for frustration and anxiety. If you clear up your entryway by placing your shoes, bag, and coat in their designated spaces there will be a lot less clutter the next time you arrive home again. Then, sort through your mail and shred what you aren’t keeping rather than letting it pile up by the front door. 2. Focus on your storage options. In today’s world, it is as easy as a click of a button and you can have the perfect trendy and functional storage delivered to your door. Whether that is a dining room hutch to store all of your china or an ottoman that opens to reveal your favorite throw pillows and blankets, the possibilities are endless. With functional and appealing storage, you will be able to declutter without sacrificing too much. 3. Donate what you don’t use to a local charity. That is not to say that there isn’t a time and a place for parting with the things that you don’t need. If you haven’t worn a shirt in an entire year, then it should go into the donation bin. Many local charities welcome donations that are in good shape and use it to help those in need. So not only do you declutter your home, you are making a difference as well. 4. If It is broken, don’t keep it. We all hang on to things that we love in hopes that they can be reused or repaired. When it comes to something that is sitting broken in a drawer, the time has come to get rid of it. You can make room for all of the new things that you and your family need. 5. Sort your “clutter into three sections. Keep, Donate, Sell. The items that you cannot part with go straight into the keep pile. Those will later be sorted into your various storage selections. Additionally, anything else that you do not plan to keep will go to your donation bin that you are planning to take to a local charity. The items that are newer or have a lot of life in them can also be sold in a yard sale or in an online marketplace. You can tuck that money away for a rainy day. 30 | October 2020
