Sarasota Art Center [ advance design A | professor michael halflants ] -8 weeks studio project Seeking a more ambitious program and concept than the current proposal, SAG strives to create a scheme which allows a new vision, one that will revitalize the local art scene. This proposal seeks to find the common ground between respect for an existing condition, and a new methodology for building, which will become the signature of a new ownership and a new attraction in the Sarasota area. The current Sarasota Art Center built in 1948, is a one-story building that houses several exhibitions as well as art courses. The current center lacks a defined program , a fluent organization of spaces, a relation to the outside environment, natural light, and an open structure with flexible spaces. This being the case and due to the lack upkeep conditions, the new SAG will have a central unconditioned courtyard space (core) that will strive to unify the program surrounding it. The new structure will also contain a central wall that will run through the building grounding the spaces and circulation around it. The new art center will in return give a new vision and path towards a more modern community.

the vision towards this project is to strive for a mainly open structure allowing views to the outside; specially opening the north side and providing an outside space for a potential ceramic sculpture garden. making the new structure open with several courtyards will in return create an inviting modern design.

the section studies strive to understand the relationship between spaces and connections between each element composing the structure. This section study in particual is taken form a fragment of the central courtyard through the main gallery space and out the ceramic garden.

the new SAG has a central unconditioned courtyard space (core) that unifes the program surrounding it. The new structure also contains a central wall that runs through the building to the outside courtyard (entrance) grounding the spaces and circulation around it. The north side of the project opens up to the outside allowing light to come in and creating a direct connection to the outside environment.

This all concrete structure calls for two air conditioning systems. An indoor self-contained unit and a roof top unit.

The library|museum is located in Merida, Yucatan in Mexico. The program calls for a space to display 60 rare books which are to be displayed open, gallery spaces to display several ancient mayan artifacts of various heights and shapes and a cafe open to the public.

the program is composed of two systems: public and private. I chosed to represent the two systems with two different and opposite materials, concrete and wood. The concrete part houses the gallery exhibit and all the more public spaces and the wood contains the books and the private spaces. the two materials interlock and are grounded by a wall containing the main vertical circulation and is composed of both materials.

3 The ground plan contains the public cafe, the second floor incorporates the library and the gallery exhibit and the third floor completes the library and overlooks the gallery spaces in the second floor. The core of the project where the two systems meet, is the main part of the project and where the books are displayed

Vertical World’s Exposition the goal of the project was to create a vertical structure that would house a world’s exposition in Chicago Illinois. today’s world expositions embody elements of all the three eras that have shaped the history of world exposition. They present new inventions, facilitate cultural exchange based on a theme, and are used for city, region and nation branding. the challenge of this project was to design various pavilions for science exhibits, technology, electronics, parks, fountains, homes and furnishings, cars and small attractions. the organizational structure contained in this matrix is interrupted by pauses or large park-like areas positioned within the design.

vertical mapping allowing the process to evolve through the use and study of the multitude of urban conditions found in the greater chicago area, this particular assignment utilizes the intricate denalties of the typical mapping agenda and allows these to form a type of vertical condition which in return informs the evolution of a tower like construction.

in speculating with spacial designs for different scales, the intention of this speculative matrix is to showcase the nations that have contributed to nation branding, cultural exchange and industrialization.

focusing on the contemporary urban conditions, the section begins to speculate about the larger density while manipulating the various scales and programs of the contemporary city.
speculative design with the idea of unifying the cultures as they all contribute to the “world of tomorrow�. throughout the design the pavilions are formed by intersecting spaces separated by large areas that act as pauses within the program.

when conceptualizing the vertical structure, the tendency to think mainly in plan and section begins to cloud the judgement and muddy the proposal. studying the corner becomes a keymode in any vertical project. it is were plan and section join to cretate an architectural joint which begins to define and situate the project in space

URBAN IDENTITY
[ activating and creating a new central city core of downtown tampa, fl ] 59|
the goal of the project was to propose a program that would revitalize the core of downtown tampa. this project proposes a series of high-end artisan markets and furniture showrooms that are scattered throughout the tower to attract movement and revitalize downtown tampa. The site is located adjacent to the university of tampa and the hillsborough river.

situated along the side of the hillsborough river, this project seeks to activate the core of downtown tampa and create a relation between downtown and the west side of the river. the intention is to create spaces to house a collection of artisan markets, galleries and showrooms throughout the tower; a design district.

the concept of the proposal begins to speak about the ideas of layering. the vertical proposal is thought about in a non linear manor meaning instead of a typical design process, top to bottom, the gesture is conceived from core to skin. in this manor, the vertical feature begin to be constructed in layers within the vertical gardens consuming the core and the structural skin condition making up the facade of the scheme. 65|

this project is situated in Ljubljana, Slovenia. the goal of this project is to enhance the corridor connecting two main large public spaces. Krizanke, a very historical site, to Congress square, a heavily active square that becomes the destination of many activities throughout the week. 75|

this drawing speculates on the relation between krizanke and the corridor of vegova ulica which eventually connects krizanke to a very important central square filled with activities; congress square.

Connecting the Voids
the main goal was to study the historical city and maintain the integrity of the place while enhancing the corridor that physically and visually connects krizanke to congress square. 83|

the enhancing of this corridor would be carried out by incorporating a parklike type of atmosphere that the living, working and visiting could benefit from. instead of bringing a commercial type of revitalization I proposed a more calm and enjoyable atmosphere.

Modern Intervention at Krizanke in this scheme, the entrance to the main theater is along the existing ancient roman wall. this allows for visual connection to congress square as well as the engagement with this important element. at moments certain portions of the wall were opened up to allow a relationship between the site and its surroundings, and to mainly expose the inside of this historic place. besides from opening up the site to the corridor connecting to congress square, the main courtyard of the site slopes to a proposed underground community space to allow for a more dynamic use of the space, while at the same time providing the existing school with a place to gather and house a variety of activities.
