ABOUT ME
This April, I will be completing the Directed Research Studio (D.S.R.) concentration in the Master of Architecture professional program at McGill University. I was awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada grant for my thesis, which examines urban cultural institutions. This interest began during my Arts and Sciences degree, where I became fascinated by the potential of linking various disciplines in order to create critical projects that actively question and rethink urban ecosystems. During my five years of architectural education, I gained an affinity for work that engages the public, questions standard institutions and rethinks social conventions. My two internships at Provencher Roy + AssociĂŠs Architectes allowed me to further explore these ideas by working on projects such as the Montreal Airport and the commercial-cultural complex CarrĂŠ Saint-Laurent. Sincerely, Veronica E. Lalli

CARRÉ SAINT-LAURENT
Located on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, at the heart of Montreal’s Red Light District, the complex is mixed-use, including commercial and cultural programs. The ground level opens up to the street, engaging in the animated atmosphere of the district.

PROFESSIONAL carré saint-laurent
This heritage façade study seeks to refer to the historic atmosphere of the street in an innovative way that is relevant to the present and future. Fabricated in CNC milled backlit Corian, the geometries are abstracted from on-site stonework façades and zinc cornices. At night, the glowing effect is reminiscent of the chaotic neon signs, which the street is historically known for.

RESEARCH tracking homelessness
TRACKING HOMELESSNESS
This initial research for the Lyceum Fellowship 2013 Competition examines the homeless’ use of urban spaces in the area around the Old Brewery Mission (OBM), one of Montreal’s largest homeless shelters. The research examines the push and pull dynamic that guides the path and flow of the homeless and determines the trajectory of their daily lives. Spending 54 hours with three homeless individuals in the area allowed for an understanding of their daily routes as well as their occupation of space. Finally, the research allowed for the creation of a guide for the homeless, outlining the key areas in the examined district. The emergent relationships between the activities of the homeless and the non-homeless reveal an alternative understanding of how the public space of the city is occupied.

ACADEMIC hyperedge
HYPEREDGE
This geometric system reverses urban edge conditions found in Shanghai – rather than the typical scenario in which the public space acts as the edge of the private, the private forms the edge of central public spaces. The plan includes three main programs. The public commercial towers push the trend of the specialization of goods to the maximum. Housing is extended along the horizontal plane, maximizing lighting conditions and allowing for open floor plates. The housing units accommodate modern non-nuclear families as well as allow for different generations to occupy neighboring units. Integrated within these programs is a water filtration system. Shanghai has an abundance of water; however, lacks clean potable water. Therefore, the structure of the system collects rain water, which is then filtered through the towers and can be distributed amongst the households as potable water.

ACADEMIC xylem
XYLEM
Berri-UQAM is a destination point where cultural events, university life, shops and cafes create the vibrancy and variety that characterizes Montreal. Xylem serves as a visual hub for this incredibly diverse cultural center, providing a framework to showcase and invite participation. Xylem is a tower made public, set in a break in the city’s urban fabric and created as an extension of the city street. The conventional core and its constituent circulation, structure, and services are disseminated across, eliminating boundaries and creating open and fluid spaces that serve as a robust framework for a multiplicity of events that fluidly adapt to ever changing set of contingencies.
