Event Review: #LOVEYOURBODY #MeetUp at A-Bar Restaurant & Lounge Our first #MeetUp for 2013 was at ABar Restaurant & Lounge, The Springs Plaza on March 2 at 1pm. We launched our new Whipped Body Butter fragrance and everyone enjoyed our Summer Garden samples and complementary fruit juice! Plus A-Bar’s salads were truly delish.

Kameela Abdul, massage therapist, closed the event by explaining the benefits of regular massage, such as reducing blood pressure, boosting the immune system, dampening harmful stress hormones, and raising mood-elevating brain chemicals! She also gave mini-massages to two lucky ladies!

We had a lot of celebrities at the event! Dian Williams of Earth Elements, Sitara Byfield of Naturally You Natural Hair Centre (Mobay), Vanessa Osbourne of Naturally Beautiful, Trudy Campbell of Island Naturals, and Trudy-ann Hylton of Curlycentric were all in the house!

The event featured Audrey Wilson of Eyl, who spoke about caring for our hair and skin with natural body products. She taught us a lot about making and using virgin castor oil in Jamaica. She also enumerated the benefits of using castor oil packs for detoxifying the body, improving organ function thus reducing fatigue and depression, and for preventing pregnancy stretch marks. We’re so in love with the benefits of castor oil packs, we have Eyl castor oil packs now available at the salon for only $4,950!

RETURN TO NATURAL: Big Chop or Transitioning?

One way to transition is to simply find good natural hairstyles to wear that will allow your hair time to rest while it is growing out. Some of the best natural hairstyles for transitioning are two strand twists, flat twists, canerows, Nubian knots, and comb twists.

Braiding and crochet braids are other ways to transition from processed to natural hair. They allow you to grow back your natural hair without cutting off the processed parts all at once. Both techniques are also quite versatile; allowing you to go through a range of looks while your hair grows out.

If your hair is processed (permed, texturised or jherri curled), the easiest way to go natural is to clip off the processed hair and allow your natural hair to grow back – what we call the ‘big chop’. You don’t need to worry about caring for two different hair textures (the relaxed ends and the emerging natural roots). You can even grow out a few inches before you do the ‘big chop’ so you’ll have a ‘teeny, weeny afro’ (TWA) when you cut the relaxed ends.

While you’re transitioning, it is important to remember that you will need to treat and moisturise your hair regularly, which will help you gain healthier, longer hair. BEAUTIFUL EARTH offers products, services, and advice to help you transition more smoothly. Come talk to us today!

However, the big chop is not for everyone, and there are several other options, such as transitioning. This is less dramatic, and refers to the transition from relaxed hair to natural hair.

It can be quite a long process!

While transitioning, some people apply heat, hot combs or flat irons to the new growth to make it blend with the rest of the hair. This is not a good idea, since applying heat to new growth might damage it. A good way to effectively transition is to begin to treat your hair as if it were already fully natural – using the same procedures, techniques, and products that naturals would use.
