What is Orton-Gillingham? Orton-Gillingham methodologies, the gold standard of language help for dyslexic learners, were developed by Samuel Torrey Orton, a neuropsychiatrist, and Anna Gillingham, an educator and psychologist. The Orton‑Gillingham approach to reading instruction has been successfully used by schools, special education teachers, and private tutors since the 1930s. This approach engages students through four learning modalities—visual (seeing), auditory (hearing), tactile (touching) and kinesthetic (moving). Verticy uses these strategies particularly in our Phonics/Spelling course to give students the same information in varied ways, offering the brain multiple opportunities to absorb and retain knowledge. 3

Every Student is Unique— So is Every Verticy Course Verticy meets students where they are and moves them toward their academic goals. Greg’s Program

Mary’s Program

Rafael’s Program

Greg is an 18-year-old who has severe difficulty and frustration with reading and writing. This negatively impacts not only his career goals, but his selfesteem. A friend is tutoring him for one hour, three times a week, using the Phonics/Spelling program. Greg is aware that many of the graphics and activities are geared toward younger students, but he knows that these activities will help him learn to read, and that is his primary goal.

Mary is being homeschooled by her mother. To reduce frustration, Mary works on Phonics/Spelling, Grammar/Composition, and Math for several months and then slowly integrates her other subjects back into her schedule. Focusing on these skills helps Mary become a more independent and enthusiastic learner. The goal is to let Mary “catch-up” with her other subjects once she has experienced success in areas that have caused frustration.

Rafael is a ten-year-old fourth grader who attends public school. He struggles in his language arts class and is using Verticy as an intervention program. Rafael uses the Yellow level of Phonics/Spelling and the Green level of Grammar/ Composition during study hall two days a week and during an afterschool program three days a week.

Specialized Language Arts Instruction PHONICS/SPELLING Verticy students will begin in one of four levels. Lessons are designed to teach students to think through language problems when reading and spelling, rather than guessing. In the Phonics/Spelling and Grammar/ Composition courses, skills are taught in a spiral of learning – basic skills are introduced and revisited as more advanced skills are continuously introduced, creating balanced skill development in all areas. Students continuously practice new skills to ensure retention, automatic retrieval and application. With Verticy, your child is able to comfortably build a solid foundation of skills needed to promote independent reading and writing, while also experiencing grade-level and age-appropriate content. Verticy’s combination of leveled and grade-specific components leads to student success in all subjects. 8

Research Shows Verticy Works Research shows that increased word recognition improves fluency, which improves reading comprehension. Calvert conducted a study of the Verticy Learning Phonics/Spelling program in Spring 2011 with 100 Sixth Graders at a Baltimore public transformation school. Students who tested in the bottom 50% of the class were split into two groups: the control group and the test group.

The test group received supplemental sessions from parents and volunteers using Verticy’s Phonics/Spelling program. Reading skills increased an average of two grade levels.

“My son is 11 and has dyslexia and ADHD. He has been in tutoring since 1st grade (5th grade now), and bounced between public and private school. Finally I gave up on both and found Verticy. We have only been using Verticy for 3 months and I have seen my son thrive, spelling words he could have never spelled before.” – Homeschool parent
