The Stylish Man New Zealand’s Finest Men’s Grooming Salon

The Stylish Man has opened the doors to its beautiful new third-floor salon in Newmarket’s world-class Westfield, at 309 Broadway. WORD S — JENNA MOOR E PH OTO GR APHY — JEFFALOO
The Stylish Man has opened the doors to its beautiful new salon on the third floor of the new 277 - the world-class Westfield Newmarket. Proudly proclaiming itself one of the country’s best men’s grooming establishments, The Stylish Man offers everything from a basic haircut (and colour, if you wish) to a moustache and beard trim, along with the largest salon selection of cleansing and styling products nationwide. Most men love to feel well-groomed and look forward to enjoying a bit of relaxed pampering in an upmarket salon. Quite apart from the mirror image gains, it’s also a balm for the soul. Making men look good is all in a day’s work for the salon’s founder, Budi Zulbakri (best known as Bodie), whose skills as a barber are in hot demand, and he always goes the extra mile. Bodie began by cutting his friends’ hair while at boarding school in Bogor, Indonesia. "I have always loved cutting hair and as my talent steadily developed, becoming a barber was a natural progression for me," he says. Bodie’s also a talented abstract artist and his work graces the walls of The Stylish Man.
With work hard to find in Indonesia, Bodie moved to New Zealand over 22 years ago. Fond of a good story, he tells the tale of opening his first barbershop in the year 2000 in a tiny 16-square-metre room in Mt Eden Village. Bodie’s ultimate goal was to provide upmarket, quality men’s hairdressing that was, well, stylish. Three years after opening that first space he moved to Newmarket and opened the doors to the first The Stylish Man at 255 Broadway. Ten years later, The Stylish Man moved to 277. When plans were made to demolish the existing buildings to make way for the new Westfield, Bodie pivoted and relocated to Pollen Street in Ponsonby. The Stylish Man is still thriving in its Ponsonby home, but as soon as the paint was dry at 309 Broadway, the new Westfield, Bodie ordered quality leather furnishings along with a stack of the latest international magazines and opened a second The Stylish Man. The Stylish Man is the epitome of high-end men’s grooming offering brands such as Kevin Murphy, JS Sloane, O&M, Pureology, evo, d:fi, Joe Grooming, American Crew, Redken and Uppercut as well as shaving brushes, beard oils and balms, and beard accessories. However, its secret sauce is a relaxed, downto-earth atmosphere trimmed with a touch of humour. Bodie lives and breathes his brand, and he loves to have a bit of fun.

J O E D D IN GTO N .CO M
NOV 2019
Three words that sum up what’s important to Jo Eddington. Armed with a quest for excellence, exceptional communication skills and a passion for connecting people, Jo is about to embark on an exciting new journey, celebrating the milestone of turning 50 and a whole new direction in life. WO R D S — J E N N A M O O R E | P H O T O G R AP H Y — J E F FAL O O
Reflecting on a career spanning 30 years, Jo shares one of her favourite quotes from Steve Jobs: “You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So, you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.” And how they have. Always adventurous, from small town beginnings in mid-Canterbury, she left NZ at 17 on a one-way ticket to Australia, going on to combine a love of travel with an exciting career, living in some great cities including Sydney, Melbourne, London and Waiheke, before settling in Parnell. Jo thrives on the buzz of big city life: “It was an exciting time. I was in my 20s when I arrived in London, a young Kiwi taking on the world. As a sales trainer for a large IT company, I soon became known as the ‘fix-it girl’—a classic Kiwi number-eight wire trait—always ready to try new ideas. I’d roll up my sleeves and tackle any problem put in front of me.” Moving into senior sales and marketing roles, she was soon managing teams, implementing strategy and negotiating complex deals – sometimes worth hundreds of millions of dollars: “It was a high pressure and fiercely competitive environment—I absolutely thrived.” Jo considers herself a lifetime learner, and puts her success down to always being curious, never shying away from new ideas or from thinking outside the square. “As with anything worthwhile in life, if you want to play the game you have to put in the effort. And first off, that means turning up and being prepared to step out of your comfort zone. “Over the course of my career I was fortunate to have been taught by some the best in the world. This was crucial when I went on to start my own business. What I learnt about sales is that your customers’ needs always come first; you must be crystal clear on the value you are providing to every client; and finally, communication. Relationships and communication are key. People buy from people they like and people they trust.” If Jo looks familiar to you, Verve readers, she probably is. A Parnell business owner and resident for over a decade, Jo’s
years in corporate were a great precursor to becoming an entrepreneur. Launching Coastal Design Co in 2007, she opened her first furniture showroom on Garfield Street, Parnell, and grew it into a successful business, working with top architects and designers on some of New Zealand’s most prestigious residential properties. During this time Jo also bought, renovated and sold several properties on Waiheke Island, Auckland Viaduct and Parnell, triggering a lifetime fascination, and love for property. With her sights set on expansion, in 2014 Jo took her business international, moving to Australia with daughter Lexi, and opening her flagship showroom in Sydney. It was an exciting time, with two showrooms in Australia and NZ, and warehouses in three countries. Life was fun, full-on and busy. But while the businesses experienced continued growth, it wasn’t all glamorous. Over the years, Jo experienced many growth pains typical to what many small business-owners face, as well as personally juggling relocation, new schools, navigating divorce and single parenthood. The toll of working seven days a week and being a full-time mum to a busy and committed daughter was real. And, when her sister-in-law in Christchurch was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given only a year to live, leaving behind two beautiful daughters similar in age to Lexi, Jo reassessed her life and priorities and made some big decisions. It became very clear, she says, that the most precious resource we all have, is time. The decision to wind down Coastal Design in Australia and NZ was personal and not taken lightly; it was life-defining. Within a week of winding down the Australian operation, still moving forward, Jo flew to New York to attend a global entrepreneurs’ conference with EO. There, she reset her aspirations, putting family firmly first. Returning and settling home in Parnell in 2016, full of ideas and never one to sit still, Jo was soon applying her newly acquired learnings. She set up a coaching and mentoring business aligning with The Icehouse, Business Mentors and NZ Trade & Enterprise, working with an array of business owners and entrepreneurs. Alongside this, she also started Alexa Resort, a luxe women’s resort wear fashion label, named after daughter Lexi.

NOV 2019
“ When asked about the key to her success, Jo offers: “As an entrepreneur you need to be striving to create an environment of value. For example, with Coastal Design, it was never about selling an outdoor sofa or table setting, it was always personal. A chair becomes a place to sit, laugh, enjoy the company of friends and family, and to create memories”. It’s the same with real estate. To some, real estate is transactional but to Jo it is emotional. She knows from her own experience, the process of buying or selling your home is a highly personal and individual experience. As a buyer and seller of a number of her own residential properties, together with her experience over the years working with thousands of homeowners, Jo is unwavering in her belief that houses are “more than bricks and mortar”: “They are the places we live and laugh and share our lives.” Jo believes “it is, always, the people who matter most”. People and community are at the heart of everything she does. With her daughter Lexi now happily ensconced at King’s College, Jo has joined the Executive Committee of the Friends, Kings College, whose purpose is to assist the college in fostering a strong sense of community between parents. She is busy working on a host of networking business and social fundraising events for students and parents and the wider community. Over the years she has also been an active supporter of many community groups including Ronald McDonald House, Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Breast Cancer Research, Parnell Tennis Club, and Parnell Kindy, as well as Parnell District School—where Lexi has many fond memories growing up, scootering to school along Saint Stephens Avenue and enjoying the delights of Judges Bay and the Parnell Pools in summer.
Suddenly, you know, it is time to start something new, and to trust in the magic of new beginnings”
And what Jo doesn’t know, she’ll find out and share with you. Combining her experience and passion, she is committed to offering the community a level of service, that is unrivalled anywhere. “Joining Ray White is a match made in heaven. A strong sense of family and values prevails here, and I love being part of a small dynamic team,” she says. “It is empowering to be working alongside some of NZ’s most respected agents, and to have the backing and support of the best legal, administrative and marketing expertise that the Ray White brand offers.” Sticking to what she knows best, Jo plans to be focused on Auckland’s east - from Parnell through to the Bays and beyond. And speaking of bays, on any sunny day, you’ll find her out before work on her stand-up paddle board at Kohi beach, or after hours you’ll spot her out and about in Parnell, with her finger on the pulse, a raft of new ideas and always, always smiling!
Jo’s drive to understand people and their needs properly led to her joining the Ray White Group in late 2019, in a move she was destined to make. “Suddenly, you know, it’s time to start something new, and to trust the magic of new beginnings,” she says. “I am excited to be setting up office in Ray White’s new boutique premises—perfectly located, steps away from some of my favourite Parnell spots like Non Solo Pizza, Gerome and Woodpecker Hill!” Jo, as always, is about connecting people. She will join a team supported by a vast array of experts, from finance, professionals, property stylists, mortgage brokers and everything in between. Whether buying, selling or browsing, Jo says she wants to do things differently; to make real estate personal and to offer a full end-to-end service connecting people with all the resources they need, personally guiding clients through what can often be a very stressful process.
Verve Readers: In 2020, Jo will be running a quarterly commentary in Verve, talking everything residential, home and design, and sharing insights and tips from the best in the business...

Keeping Active with Lorna Jane We chat to Lorna Jane, creator and owner of Lorna Jane Activewear.
26
Why did you start designing Activewear? I started designing Activewear because I wanted to change the way women thought about being active. My idea was to design something that she could wear from morning to night, so that instead of being active for just one hour a day she would become more active in her everyday life. I called it ‘Activewear’ because I just wanted her to put it on and be active. In the beginning it was just about creating Activewear but over the years it has evolved to be so much more than that. Lorna Jane is about changing the way we live by wearing Activewear, it’s about empowering women and it’s about having a positive impact on the world through active living and the daily practice of move, nourish and believe. Take us back to the beginning. What did it look like and how did you build Lorna Jane and the Activewear into what it is today? I was a fitness instructor teaching five to six classes a day and running around in between classes trying to do all those ‘life things’ you have to get done. I realised that running my errands in workout clothes made it so much easier to get things done than when I was wearing regular clothes and I didn’t have to waste time getting dressed and undressed after every workout! The only downside was that it was back in the late '80s, so I was running around town in a G-string leotard and fluro tights and getting a little more attention than I wanted! So I decided to try my hand at designing and making something that I could workout in, but would also work well in my everyday life.
At the time I was sharing a house with a girlfriend that was a home economics teacher, so she gave me a quick lesson on how to use a sewing machine. I bought some Lycra and started to construct the first ever piece of Activewear! At the time my intention was to just make this Activewear for myself but the women in my classes had other ideas, and before I knew it, I was sewing every night, on the weekends and spending endless hours shopping for Lycra! The demand was incredible. I remember about three months in standing in front of one of my classes and realising that absolutely every woman was wearing Lorna Jane! It wasn’t long after that that I quit my day job and took that great big leap of faith to start designing Activewear full time. In the beginning I was just working from home, then I opened a small design studio and showroom in one of the bigger gyms I was teaching at. I would also take a rack of my latest designs to every class I taught, to promote and sell my products to the women that took my classes all over Brisbane. After about two years my husband Bill came onboard and we opened our first retail store, and it just snowballed from there! One store quickly became five, became 10 and today we have over 170 stores worldwide, and an online business that goes from strength to strength every year. We have created a brand that actually changes the way women think about being active and a community of women that inspire and support each other to embrace active living.
LO RN A JA N E .N Z
NOV 2019
When you were building Lorna Jane was there a defining moment when you knew you were on to something? There was one was pretty early in my career. I was entering fashion awards and because the activewear category wasn’t recognised yet I was entering Active pieces in the lifestyle, resort and swimwear categories – and actually winning! But the defining moment here was when the organisers rang me to tell me that they were going to create an activewear Cctegory because of the demand I had created, which gave me so much encouragement to keep going with my ambitions for Activewear. But the defining moment that stands out the most was the day a woman came into our store – and bought absolutely everything that we had!
“Being fearless is about doing what I know is right even when it scares me.”
We had been in business for about two years with one retail store in Brisbane and my husband Bill, who was working in the store that day, came home with his pockets literally full of money! Of course, we celebrated, and then realised we'd have to restock the whole shop! But as I was madly cutting and sewing so that we could re-open, I remember thinking to myself, 'If one woman can buy absolutely everything in the store then we really must be on to something!' It’s amazing how these defining moments can boost your confidence and give you the energy and belief in yourselves to keep going. So, tell us about Active Living? I practice our brand philosophy of Active Living every day without fail and I can honestly say that it has transformed my life! It’s based around the daily practice of Move, Nourish, Believe and every day I make sure I move my body with regular exercise, I nourish my mind and body with good food and I make sure that I go through the day with a positive (Believe) mindset. Making the daily commitment to these three pillars makes it easy to keep on track and have a healthy routine no matter how busy my life gets. We’re all under a lot of pressure these days and as much as we’d like to think we can, we can’t do everything all of the time. So it’s about making sure that we’re prioritising the things we truly care about and living a life that we love, so the pressure is positive rather than overwhelming.
27
Your brand is known for encouraging women to be fearless. What does being fearless mean to you? For me, being fearless is about doing what I know is right even when it scares me. It means standing up for who I am and what I believe in, even when it isn’t the popular view. It means being comfortable with stepping into uncomfortable moments because I know they will push my life forward. And it’s about following your heart even when people tell you you’re crazy.

Edna Swart We spend a day with Edna Swart, designer, entrepreneur and the owner of ed&i swim and body.
AD 6am
My alarm goes off. Coffee and a quick scroll through my notifications to set up my day’s goals and to-dos. Up and off for a run followed by a gym session—I competed internationally in athletics, so running is my discipline and clears my head for the day.
8am Shower and beauty regime begins. It never takes me too long, but my skincare is super important to me. My morning face routine is simple. First, face scrub with Rock and Roll Suicide by Triumph & Disaster; tone with Chanel lotion douceur; vitamin C with Kiehl’s; and lastly, moisturise with Murad Hydration water gel. Before I get dressed, I lather my body with ed&i body ALWAYS for full day body hydration.
8.30am All set up for the day at my home office—the hustle begins once more! Emails, orders and distributors. Time is flying and so much to do—I love being my own boss.
11.30am
A quick catch up on emails before heading to my next meeting with my manufacturers of ed&i body. I’m deep into planning the next product for our body range, so perfecting and testing product with my team is very important.
1pm Lunch with my best girlfriend Lyia—always so many laughs with this one. Today we dined at Mexico and I kept it simple with a ceviche salad.
10am Meeting with my business partners Harry and Mike to discuss the plan of attack for the next steps in scaling, partnerships, product expansion and strategy.
1.45pm Spending my afternoon going through my new products, testing it on myself, creating social media content, planning advertising material and deliveries with my social team.
3.30pm A phone call from my publicist with a new opportunity—exciting things to come!
6pm My partner Alex and I have dinner plans, so after a quick spruce up I head out to meet him. Tonight, we’re going to my favourite spot, Ezabu in Ponsonby.
8.30pm A quick dry scrub with ed&i BEFORE, before washing it off in the shower. Then I lather my body with my AFTER body oil, which is very high in vitamin E, followed by ed&i ALWAYS moisturiser (highly recommend for super soft skin in the morning). My nighttime face routine (super important!)—another face scrub with Rock and Roll Suicide (I can’t get enough of this), tone and finished off with prescribed retinol cream.
9.30pm In bed now, multi-tasking between replying to messages on Instagram and Facebook, and watching a new episode of Cold Case Files on Netflix before lights out!

For The Boys Although the work I do is predominantly with female clients, I do work with men and I really enjoy their more pragmatic approach. I’ve never had a female client tell me “if you think it looks good then it must look good, so I’ll buy it” which is something loads of male clients do. I think they believe that they are working with an expert in a field they are not overly confident in and they’re simply more prepared to trust me. They also just want to get the job done. For men, it’s not just about having a fun experience shopping, it’s far more about achieving an outcome: a great wardrobe that they don’t need to think about for another year. 36
So, this column's for the boys, and below are a few style tips they need to know: •Stop wearing clothes that don’t fit you. Shirts that are too big (including business shirts that have too much ‘blousing’), jeans that are too baggy, oversized sweatshirts and t-shirts. All of these will make you look pudgy and scruffy. • Make sure the shoulder seam of your shirt/t-shirt sits at your shoulder and is not sloping down your arm. When your shirt seam is heading down your arm it gives your shoulders a sloped appearance. Sit it square at your shoulder and you’ll instantly give yourself a squared off, standing tall look. • When you are choosing a suit jacket make sure it gives you shape through your torso even when unbuttoned. If it doesn’t, it’s too big.
• Tailoring and alterations make all the difference. Take up the too long hem of your trousers, shorten the sleeves of shirts and jackets if they are covering half your hand. Failure to do so will make you look like you have borrowed your big brother's clothing. • Wear the right colours to complement you. Don’t overwhelm your softer colouring in black, don’t make your deeper complexion look sallow in something too washed out. Know what works for you and choose within your palette. • Retire it. If it’s faded, lost it’s shape, pilled or no longer fits you, it needs to go. No exceptions. • Dress like a grown up. Don’t be dressed in ‘sponsors product’ polos and tees. Don’t wear someone else’s advertising, wear your own clothes. • Don’t be an old man before your time. Yes, you can still have a bit of fun. Stay current, go for a slim pair of jeans, wear a pair of cool trainers, pick the great jacket. Don’t give up and don’t buy everything for comfort. HEALTH, BEAUTY & FITNESS Wim Hof is not just the toughest man you’ve probably never heard of; he might just be toughest man ever, period. His numerous feats of human endurance have secured more than two dozen world records while bagging him the nickname that is very nearly the literal definition of cool: The Iceman. He is living—but seemingly never shivering—proof that matters of apparent physical impossibility really can be conquered by the mind (and specialised breathing). Hof is adamant that his techniques can “bring people back to tranquillity”, alleviating, and perhaps even curing all manner of diseases and ailments. It was way back in 1999 when the extreme athlete first made headlines in his native Netherlands not just by swimming under a frozen lake on TV, but then jumping
back in to rescue an onlooker who had taken a tumble into the waters. His unusual skill began its development 20 years earlier, when, as a teenager walking alongside an icy Amsterdam canal, Hof felt the overwhelming compulsion to plunge right in. By doing so, he says, he elicited an “inside connection” with his body that also freed his mind of “gibberish”. He continued with his daily dips, gradually increasing how long he spent in the frigid waters and now holds the world record for time spent immersed in an ice bath (one hour, 52 minutes and 42 seconds). The impact of such cold, Hof says, “makes you aware of your deeper physiology”: “This is something we have lost in modern life,” he tells Conrad Magazine. “But we can rediscover it with practice.” Developing a breathing technique based on Buddhist meditation that was to become known as the ‘Wim Hof Method’, the athlete’s self-imposed challenges became evermore extreme. In 2007 Hof ran the world’s fastest half-marathon with bare feet across snow and ice (it took him two hours, 16 minutes and 34 seconds), and in the same year he climbed 24,500 feet up Mount Everest in nothing but shorts and shoes. The following year, wearing the same (lack of) gear, Hof scaled Mount Kilimanjaro in

less than two days (most do it in five to nine), and has also completed a half marathon through the Namib Desert without consuming a drop of water. Why Wim Hof pushes—some might say, punishes—himself so can perhaps be explained, in part at least, through personal tragedy. In 1995, his wife, who had been suffering from schizophrenia, jumped to her death from the eighth floor of their apartment building. Son, Enahm, says that “everything started there” while Hof admits that though he has learnt to “master grief and pain”, he will still cry when talking about her, and believes his work can help relieve similar “unnecessary suffering” in others. However, how Hof does what he does is a different matter entirely—and it has attracted the attention of doctors and scientists. A study published in the journal, NeuroImage, found Hof’s body either “by accident or by luck” has the ability to “hack into the physiological system” to activate “an internal painkiller function”. When exposed to plunging temperatures, Hof’s brain, seemingly at will, is able to release opioids and cannabinoids that not only block pain, but create euphoric sensations when most would experience physical stress. “Your brain has the power to modify your pain perception,” study co-author Dr Otto Musik of Wayne State University’s School of Medicine tells Smithsonian. “The placebo effect is real.” The possibilities of ‘mind over matter’ aside, what does have scientists stumped is how Hof manages to fend off
biological degradation such as frostbite, or run more than 20 kilometres through a desert without drinking water. Other studies have even shown him able to maintain his core body temperature while immersed in ice, and remain symptom-free after being injected with an E coli endotoxin. Arguments that he may simply be a freak of nature fall apart when confronted by the fact that some of his students too have developed similar, seemingly superhuman, abilities. Hof believes that his breathing method and regular cold water immersion can cure everything from depression to diabetes to arthritis to mental illness and even cancer. Professor Peter Pickkers of the Netherlands’s Radboud University Medical Centre, responsible for the E coli tests, reveals that Hof’s breathing technique greatly effects not only oxygen and CO2 levels, but raises adrenaline levels higher than those “observed in people who bungee-jump for the first time”, increasing Hof’s anti-inflammatory and immune response. Though, Pickkkers strictly cautions against claims Hof holds the secret to curing life-threatening conditions. “Assuming there is a beneficial effect, my guess would be that the effects can only be there as long as you practise the techniques,” he tells the Guardian, “likely not longer than a day.” Such musings have done little to quash Hof’s self-belief, of course. “Live your body, stimulate your body... We need to be stimulated to help fight disease,” he says.“... That’s what nature meant us to do, breathe deep when we are stressed.”
V ERV E M AGA ZIN E .CO.N Z
Tips from the Iceman The Wim Hof Method is built on the “three powerful pillars” of cold therapy, breathing and commitment, said to, among other things, increase energy, improve sleep, boost mood and enhance the immune system. Hof calls the cold “your warm friend”, with exposure to it resulting in the destruction of (bad) fats and the production of ‘feel good’ endorphins. He recommends taking a oneminute cold shower after your hot one to stimulate your vascular system. Breathe mindfully, taking deep, conscious breaths: “We’re always breathing, yet we’re mostly unaware of its tremendous potential... more energy, reduced stress levels, and an augmented immune response that swiftly deals with pathogens”. Be patient and dedicated to the practice. Mastering your own body and mind doesn’t happen overnight, but believe that you can, and believe that you will: “That’s the natural sate of our being: happy, strong and healthy.”

Hacking health in the ageing man 44
Men’s health is no different than the universal definition of health – it encompasses complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease. The fact that the average life expectancy of NZ males is 78 years, versus women at 82 years, raises important issues about male behaviour and social values, and delivery of health care. Though cardiovascular and cancer take the top spots, essentially common to both sexes, it is not inclusive of the poor quality of life issues suffered by the ageing man. This includes the gradual decrease in memory, arthritis, depression, loss of muscle mass and frailty, and specific issues related to erectile dysfunction and prostate health. This article will essentially emphasise prevention of disease and maintaining quality of life, well into the later years. HORMONES – COMPLEX AND CONTROLLING! Beyond optimising commonly known facts of a healthy balanced diet, exercise and movement, avoidance of harmful habits like smoking, excessive alcohol and exposure to other environmental toxins, it is essential to maintain good hormonal balance to maximise ‘organ reserve’ with advancing years. Our body has several hormones that pour billions of units per day into our bloodstream. These control essential functions like brain and heart health, adequate digestion and assimilation of nutrients from food, building and maintaining bone mass, sleep-wake
cycle, governing metabolism, combating the effects of stress and supporting levels of blood sugar and other electrolytes in the body. In essence, they maintain a state of balance called ‘homeostasis’ in the body. Hormones also control one's sex drive, virility and fertility. Though these hormones have specific jobs to do, they are essentially an elaborately interwoven system that needs to work together in synergy, like an orchestra playing a symphony. OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGES OF DECREASING HORMONE LEVELS All of these key hormones are known to decrease as we age – a fact that is well documented in medical literature. Good diet, exercise and avoidance of toxins are the main levers of all positive health outcomes that help to reduce this normal age related decline. A carefully assessed, small dose multi-hormonal replacement programme can help this process further. Typically, for a man, this may consist of ensuring adequate testosterone levels, using either botanicals or bioidentical hormones, amongst other lifestyle factors to maintain good prostate health and sexual function. There are several questionnaires, lab tests and imaging procedures, along with genetic testing, which can be utilised to enable a comprehensive assessment. A medical practitioner conversant with all of this information is able to suggest a safe, long-term programme to achieve optimal health.
Dr. Kamal Karl, MBBS, FACNEM, FRNZCGP, FNZCAM, and his wife, Dr. Avani Karl, MBBS, DipObs, RNZGP, currently practise in Auckland as Functional Medicine Practitioners. Specialising in treating chronic illness, they adopt an integrative, personalised and preventative approach to healthcare. Please email info@fmdr.co.nz or visit fmdr.co.nz for more information.

1. Make sure your diet is tailored to your physical and individual health. Generally, eating less calories with a predominantly plant-based multi-coloured diet rich in phytonutrients with some variations will achieve this. 2. Movement is essential for good health. Incorporate some form of exercise (include interval training if possible) daily for 20-30 minutes. 3. Restrict use of alcohol, sweet and processed foods. 45
4. Keep hydrated and maintain an alkaline blood pH by drinking lemon water. 5. Maintain ideal body weight, preferably with bioimpedence measurements to know the fat content of the body. 6. Ensure adequate nutrient intake from food and supplementation as needed – especially as deficiencies are present more frequently as you age. 7. Some of the key nutrients useful in this area include: • Quality high dose fish oil with EPA and DHA oils. These levels can be measured in blood. • Adequate vitamin D as needed after a blood test. • Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric is a strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. • Nicotinamide riboside, along with resveratrol are key longevity promoting nutrients. 8. Maintain good hormonal balance with careful replacement of natural (bioidentical) hormones. 9. Finally, being connected to your family and community, as well as prioritising personal spiritual development, have shown great health benefits in recent research (and has not been previously emphasised).

MAKING SCENTS
46
“I’ve always been interested in perfume, but it wasn’t until I began researching what goes into it that I started to get a passion for making something that was pure,” says Virginia Di Somma, founder, curator and perfumer of The Olfactory, an all-natural, Auckland-based perfume brand. “I get stirred up when so called ‘natural’ brands are not transparent and make claims along the lines of being 95 percent natural. Why adulterate a pure product with 5 percent of anything synthetic and completely destroy its integrity? "The Olfactory perfumes are pure and unadulterated, made with the highest perfume grade essential oils available. Even our ethanol, made by a local master distiller in Puhoi, is food grade. My teacher in Italy used to joke that our customers should be able to drink the perfumes we compose, and while that’s true, and I’ve done it, I wouldn’t recommend it!" The perfumer admits that she had previously worn synthetic perfumes for most of her life, but now uses her old designer scents as air fresheners: “The ones I haven’t already given away I use in the bathroom!” she chuckles. "They may smell good, but I don’t want them anywhere near my skin.”
Virginia says essential oils are good for the endocrine system to better “govern hormones, memory, arousal and all sorts of things”. “Essential oils get absorbed into your bloodstream, and support the body,” she continues, “whereas synthetic ingredients are actually toxic and interrupt and block our endocrine system from doing important work. I had no idea that even most niche perfumes only contain between 2-12 percent pure essential oils. The rest are synthetic imitations, cheaper to produce and more reliable for high volume production." At $149-$585, The Olfactory’s offerings are most certainly at the higher end of the market. The Olfactory (cleverly christened in honour of the bulb in our brains that links smells to memories and emotions) not only offers scents crafted from the “purest ethically sourced essential oils on the planet”, but a bespoke service that speaks to your individuality; a unique, once in a lifetime scent that may mark a special occasion for both men and women, such as an engagement, wedding, anniversary or significant birthday.
V ERV E M AGA ZIN E .CO.N Z
NOV 2019 “It took more than three years to perfect our process,” says Virginia over coffee in Ponsonby. “With the help of a few psychological profiling questions, we came up with our own insightful questionnaire that gets to the heart of who a person is. We then help guide you toward what will reflect what is important, to what will support you in life – as well as make you feel and smell unique and delicious!” Two final iterations are crafted, allowing the customer the final say and ensuring their involvement throughout the process. Virginia says the oils have their own energies, characters almost, that align with our bodies’ chemistry. Certain smells lure certain people, and in turn, our personal scents can attract – or repel – others. “Smell is one of the most important things that attracts us to one another as humans, albeit unconsciously,” says Virginia. “You are emitting a smell every minute of the day without even realising it. Our perfumes react with the body
negotiable". “I’ve found myself wondering how long I have left – my mum was in her 101st year, so if I live as long as her that’s a good while yet! But you still have to be strategic and purposeful, decide what you want, and make it happen.” Virginia considers her chosen path a service to others. “I love the connections I make with people while in the studio,” she says, “finding out who they are and what is important to them. I really value that, and then to be able to give them something that is a meaningful support to their lives. I’m very grateful to be doing this work.” Virginia owned a fashion boutique in Christchurch in a previous life, forced to start afresh when her business was destroyed by the 2011 quake. Before relocating to Auckland, she headed to Italy (Virginia has Maori-Italian ancestry) where she studied under renowned perfumer Dominique Dubrana. “I’ve noticed seven to eight-year patterns in my life,” she reveals. “The earthquakes brought me here, and
“Smell is one of the most important things that attracts people to other people, even unconsciously,”
to create a scent that connects intimately with your own pheromones. For you and the people you allow in for a hug and kiss, rather than a dominating, disguising smell to be announced to all within the vicinity!” Our sense of smell is considered our most evocative, and even, says Virginia, the one that stays with you the longest: “There have been studies that show smell is the last sense you experience before you die. My mum passed away recently, and we made sure to burn essential oils in her room before she passed. I used them to embalm her body too, rather than fill her with all the toxic chemicals so bad for the planet.” Her mother’s death, she adds, has forced her to face her own mortality, to focus on “what is important, what is non-
now with my mum gone, it feels like a new journey is about to begin.” She recently purchased 38 acres of native bush in the Kaipara with her sons and their families, and plans to eventually establish her own scented gardens and perfume studio there. It is, she beams, her happy place. Being part Maori, an instinctual connection with the land comes with the territory. Though she enjoys her freedom, Virginia admits it would be great to share her journey with someone special, “but it has to be the right person.” “I can’t imagine ever getting sick of making perfume for people,” she smiles. “I see myself on the land as an old lady … happy. Happy making perfume. Kids and grandchildren around.”
Centuries of Scent From the Egyptians to the Chinese to the Greeks and Romans, perfumes have been used by ancient civilisations around the world. A 3,000-year-old Mesopotamian tablet reveals the first known perfumer to be a woman named Tapputi. The oldest perfumes were found in Cyprus, and were more than 4,000 years old. The Ancient Egyptians are thought to have created the first specially designated perfume bottles, including glass ones. Egyptian priests are cited as the fathers of modern perfume, creating fragrances to mask sacrificial offerings, especially fond of aromatic wood and myrrh imported from other regions of the African continent.
The Persians perfected the distillation process and use of alcohol as a base. The spread of Christianity curtailed the use and making of perfume during the Middle Ages in much of Europe, during which time Muslims predominantly kept the art alive. Ironically, Crusaders returning from the Middle East brought back scent-making recipes. The Renaissance reintroduced perfume to the Western world, especially among the upper classes and most notably in France. The creation of synthetic compounds during the Victorian era gave birth to the modern perfume industry.

Eyeliner That Lasts WO R D S — J E N N A M O O R E
Would you like a subtle, smudged eyeliner effect that looks beautiful and doesn’t wash off ? Makeup artist Abbie Gardiner has you covered.
50
Abbie Gardiner has been a makeup artist for 15 years, winning accolades and awards and travelling the world with her craft. As she’s grown older she’s noticed her makeup needs changing along with many of the women she serves. “I’m in my mid-forties now and a lot of the women who gravitate toward me to get their makeup done are around the same age,” she says. “With age things change. Among other things, I’m seeing a lot of women having trouble applying their eyeliner.” Searching for a solution Abbie began researching cosmetic tattooing. “A lot of it’s very harsh looking but the deeper I looked the more I began to discover a lovely natural, smudged effect being used overseas,” she says. “My partner is Brazilian and we were going there on holiday so looking for training in Brazil and European cities like the Czech Republic and Poland made perfect sense.” Abbie found some cosmetic tattooing that equated to what she wanted to emulate but the people practising it had limited English. This created a problem for learning. “Then I discovered Barbara in Maringá in Brazil,” says Abbie. “We were in Sao Paulo and Thiago and his mum were worried about me going off on my own but Barbara assured them she’d pick me up from the airport and take me to my hotel, so off I went." She admits to being nervous. “I know I’m a good makeup artist, I’ve won awards, I’m a tutor at The Makeup School in Ponsonby and my work has taken me all over the world so when you know you’re good at something it’s humbling to find yourself at the learning stage again.”
Abbie worked on artificial skin for a couple of days to learn the techniques required. “On the last day of training Barbara brought in some ladies for me to work on and it went very well. Using the gun is simply an extension of working with my makeup brush,” she says. After perfecting her new skill Abbie’s keen to help make life easier for women by creating an upper eyeliner that will last approximately two to three years. “As we grow older our lashes can become sparse and the eyes often become a little droopy so I use a technique to lift the eye and make it look more youthful again,” she says. “My mother Christine is 66 and loves her eyeliner. She says that even using a lighted magnifying mirror wasn’t working for her so this has changed her life in terms of getting ready for the day. “For some women the thought of a needle around the eyeball is terrifying and I understand that but I’m very careful and am used to doing precision work. There is some preparation involved for best results so I ask you to stop lash growth serum three weeks before treatment and to avoid alcohol for a few days beforehand and good hydration is key. After application, I’ll give you a healing vitamin A/D cream to apply with a cotton bud and most people report being nicely healed within four days." Abbie is also working with hairlines and male pattern baldness using a series of tiny dots that create the illusion of density. The price is dependent on the area.

The Run Down on Thigh Lifts WO R D S — D R K ATAR Z Y N A M AC K E N Z I E PLASTIC SURGEON
As we age, the natural elasticity of the skin is lost as the amount of elastin lessens, and the skin and fat of our inner thighs begin to sag, creating saggy skin that hangs from the inner thighs. This condition can also occur after substantial weight loss.
52
Exercise may help to strengthen and improve the underlying muscle tone of the thigh; however, exercise will not help any excess skin that has lost tone, nor help underlying weakened tissues and localised fat deposits. If exercise and weight control efforts have not achieved the goals for a body that is firmer, more youthful-looking and more proportionate to the overall body image, a surgical lift may be the right choice WHAT IS A THIGH LIFT? Thigh lift surgery is a procedure that reshapes the thighs by reducing excess skin, and in some cases fat, resulting in smoother skin and better-proportioned contours of the thighs and lower body. It may help to increase confidence and a better self-image. The appearance of the inner thighs can be corrected by removing skin and fatty tissue, however the surgery often leaves a scar which begins in the groin area, runs across the inside of the thigh and then under the crease of the buttock. In cases where there is significant excess of loose skin on the inner aspect of the thigh, additional surgery must be done to contour the area properly. This leaves a vertical scar on the inside of the thigh. Liposuction may be used as an adjunct to help with the contours of the inner thigh, or in some cases liposuction can be used as an alternative. WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A THIGH LIFT? Thigh lift is an individualised procedure and may not be suitable for everyone. The most common reasons for considering a thigh lift are: • Ageing, heredity and weight loss causing significant inner thigh skin excess • Self-consciousness due to the appearance of the thighs • Desire for better, more proportionally contoured and firmer looking thighs • Difficulty fitting into clothing because of heavy thighs
WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF A THIGH LIFT? • Thigh lift surgery does not treat the lower leg • A scar along the inner side of the thigh is necessary to perform thigh lift surgery • Significant changes in weight can affect the long term results of thigh lift surgery WHERE WILL THE SCARS BE? The scar which begins in the groin area, runs across the inside of the thigh and then under the crease of the buttock. In cases where there is significant excess loose skin on the inner aspect of the thigh additional surgery must be done to contour the area properly and results in a vertical scar on the inside of the thigh. Thigh lift scars vary depending on the amount of excess tissue you have and the elasticity of your skin. Scars usually fade and soften over a period of one year, however they will never disappear. HOW LONG DOES THE EFFECT OF A THIGH LIFT LAST? The results of thigh lift surgery will be long-lasting, provided that you maintain a stable weight and general fitness. Thigh lift will not prevent the effects of ageing. It is natural to lose some firmness, but most of your improvement should be relatively permanent. WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS OF A THIGH LIFT? In general, thigh lifts are safe, and the results are entirely predictable, with an associated high degree of patient satisfaction. Nevertheless, no surgery is without risk.

Super Boost for Summer!
We all remember a time when our skin was more radiant, smoother and feeling more hydrated. As we age, our skin reduces production of natural moisturising factors (NMFs), including hyaluronic acid—a naturally occurring substance in our bodies. If we combine this with long-haul flights, air conditioning, and swimming or sun exposure, no amount of makeup can hide the dehydrating effect on our skin. If you’ve found yourself reading moisturiser boxes in recent years, odds are you’ve noticed hyaluronic acid at the top of the ingredient list, and with good reason. Hyaluronic acid has a very powerful moisturising effect, drawing water into the skin and trapping it there. It can hold up to one thousand times its own weight in water! But, if you really want to replenish and maintain optimal hydration of your skin, you need to get a little bit sneaky! Super Boost lets you bypass the gatekeeper that is your skin barrier and deliver the hyaluronic acid directly into your skin, under the very top layer, where it can be best used to replenish natural hydration levels and encourage elastin and collagen production and deposition. While traditional hyaluronic acid fillers rely on their firm consistency and jelly-like viscosity to lift and reshape the
face and skin, Super Boost uses a much thinner product. This means the treatment can be delivered through a tiny, single insertion point on each cheek. Via a cannula, the hyaluronic acid is distributed in a fan pattern to treat the surface of the mid-face, and part of the lower face. The result of the treatment is hydrated, glowing, smoother skin without adding volume. We notice improved moisturisation and skin texture, lasting for up to six months. Wouldn’t we all like to bring back that coveted smooth, dewy complexion so the makeup can be left in the drawer some days this summer! Instead, rejoice in natural, glowing, youthful, holiday fresh skin, with some immediate effect. The treatment takes 30 minutes, with minimal discomfort and no downtime—one of our doctors went to a wedding within a couple of hours of her treatment! Super Boost will give your skin a radiance and smoothness that you will see you through the summer months in shipshape. Can you really heal your skin through internal nutritional support? This statement had always intrigued me and I have come to realise why in the past decade. I am a professional skincare therapist, owner of Louise Gray Skin Care, with a background as a former registered nurse. I am obsessed with skin health. It is the correlation between what is happening internally within the body, with what is happening externally that fascinates me. Having worked extensively in intensive care, you realise how the body works as a whole and that you cannot compartmentalise things. I believe that our body is like a finely tuned orchestra, working in unison to create a balanced repertoire. Imagine leaving out the percussion section at the end of an aria, it will never sound the same.
The same goes hand-in-hand with great skin and dermal nutrition. I have personally suffered with acne, eczema and seasonal allergies. Topical treatments have worked to an extent, but when I started to deep dive into dermal nutrition everything improved remarkably. Your skin needs to be supported internally to reap the rewards of total skin health. A wide range of nutrients is required for skin to thrive, heal and resist premature ageing. Dull, lifeless, and inflamed or spotty skin maybe indications that your body is not getting enough of the nutrients it needs for health, or that food sensitivities are actively working against a clear, glowing complexion. Essential fatty acid (EFA) oils have been my favourite for a long time. They are wonderful for myriad skin conditions ranging from acne to increased sensitivity, and for stabilising oil flow from excessive oiliness to extreme dryness. They moisturise your skin from within. When the skin is rich in EFAs, the oil naturally makes its way to the surface and forms a healing, anti-inflammatory protective outer layer. It also helps prevent skin congestion and breakouts, and can even help dissolve existing blockages as long as you reduce your intake of congesting foods. At Louise Gray Skin Care we have an extensive range of dermal supplements and we will help guide you to incorporate these options into your regime. We are very focused on improving the health of your skin. It is primarily all about health, wellness and nurturing the largest organ of your body. Having had bad skin myself, I understand the need for education on skin health. I thrive on the ability to be able to educate people about this, so they understand how the body is amazing in so many ways and that facial skin often portrays what is happening internally and usually a guide to total wellbeing. It is now time for you to discover the Louise Gray difference. Yours, in skin health, Louise Gray, senior therapist and director of Louise Gray Skin Care We proud to be members of the NZARBP. Beat The Leaks & Strengthen Your Pelvic Floor with the Emsella Chair
A revolutionary new treatment promises to kick bladder control and leakage problems to the kerb. If the truth is told, bladder problems are something we’d rather sweep under the carpet than talk about. But the reality is that we need to discuss it because urinary incontinence is a medical condition that affects hundreds of thousands of men and women around the world.
Research shows 95 percent of people reported significant improvement in their quality of life after a course of Emsella Chair treatments. WHAT CAUSES URINARY INCONTINENCE? Illness, pregnancy, childbirth, surgery, being overweight, menopause and growing older can all contribute. Heck, even weight-lifting can be a trigger. It’s an issue that serves up moments that, at best, give us pause and, at worst, make us wish the ground would swallow us. Urinary incontinence causes anxiety, frustration, selfesteem woes and sees many people avoiding places and activities due to fear of leakage. And while it’s restrictive on a personal level, it can also make a dent in our bank accounts with the need for daily incontinence pads.
REFRESH SKIN CLINIC Linda Gormly, the owner of Refresh Skin Clinic, is a registered nurse and current aesthetician (appearance medicine professional). Her nursing background means she has an awareness of how much of an issue urinary incontinence is. So when she came across Emsella Chair in Australia she knew that it would change people’s lives. The revolutionary chair treats urinary incontinence nonsurgically and non-invasively using high-intensity focused electromagnetic technology (HIFEM). “I knew it was special straight away,” says Linda. “When the mesh treatment for urinary incontinence came out all of us in the medical profession thought it would change patients lives but I’ve seen a lot of women have problems with it and I’ve heard some heartbreaking stories.” THE EMSELLA CHAIR During an appointment, you’ll sit in the chair which uses HIFEM waves to contract all deep pelvic floor muscles. “It feels like tapping initially,” explains Linda. “We get you seated in the correct position first, that’s important, and then you’ll feel a tingling sensation which comes in waves for about five minutes before it goes back to the tapping which releases lactic acid. The lactic acid step is key as it ensures there are no muscle aches, discomfort or side effects after treatment. One treatment is equal to 11,000 Kegel exercises.”

Soaking up the CULTURE Words: Melanie Dower
After a long journey or hours spent wandering unfamiliar streets, a perfect way to unwind while traveling is to try the local way of bathing. While stepping out of your comfort zone (and your clothes) can be daunting, these unique experiences can help broaden the mind and offer the chance to really experience local culture.
While many public baths don’t allow entry to people with tattoos due to the association with organised crime, some public baths will make allowances during the upcoming Olympic Games for visitors. In the meantime, small tattoos concealed by a plaster shouldn’t hold you back.
Hamam Dating back to the Ottoman Empire, a hamam may also be referred to as a Turkish bath. Found throughout the Islamic world, men and women typically bathe separately and while you will be given a robe or wrap to don, you won’t be keeping this long. The experience begins in a warm steam room before moving to another room where your hair and body are soaped thoroughly by a washer of the same gender. This is followed by a vigorous scrub or mud mask to remove dead skin cells before another rinse with basins of warm water. Wherever possible, follow up with an oil massage to indulge your softened skin.
Finnish Sauna Saunas are integral to most social events in Finland and often a weekly routine for families. Unless in a mixedgender facility, swimsuits are not allowed due to the chlorine they emit. Shower before entering and remove jewellery such as necklaces to avoid burning your skin. A small towel called pefletti can be placed on the sauna bench to sit on while you enjoy the steam, or löyly, that comes from water thrown on the hot rocks. Only stay as long as you feel comfortable before leaving for a cold drink or for the really brave, a dip in the frozen sea. Just remember to pack jandals to save your feet from frostbite on the way there.
Onsen This Japanese ritual is a wonderful way to calm the mind after a long day of touring. Always shower and be sure to rinse off all soap before entering the water. An onsen is a place for quiet reflection and noisy chatting and splashing are unwelcome. While public baths of mixed gender may require a swimsuit, it is expected you will otherwise bathe naked, with a small towel provided to protect modesty. This however should be left on the side of the pool and only used when moving between bathing areas.
Hungarian Hot Springs Famous for their medicinal properties, Hungary’s thermal pools claim to not only soothe the weary traveller, but cure a range of ills too. A visit to Budapest is not complete without a soak at one of the many hot springs, with Széchenyi Baths among the most famous. Arrive early, taking a swimsuit and jandals for the walk between the nearly 20 pools on offer. If the labyrinthine changing rooms overwhelm you, just ask an attendant or follow the signs to your next bathing destination.

SMOOTHER, MORE CONFIDENT YOU! Finesse Face and Body Clinic is proud to be the first TruSculpt ID provider in New Zealand, as part of an exclusive partnership with Cutera. TruSculpt ID is the latest technology available to permanently and non-invasively remove body fat. “We have been leaders in non-invasive cellulite and body contouring treatments in Auckland for 17 years,” says Sue Crake, owner of the Remuera salon.
HOW DOES TRUSCULPT ID WORK? TruSculpt ID employs a unique form of low frequency monopolar radio frequency energy that penetrates deep into the adipose tissue and is able treat the entire fat pad. Given each patient’s unique biological complex the TruSculpt ID is able to adjust the energy output to compensate for fibrous tissue ensuring each patient receives an optimally effective treatment. HOW IS TREATMENT PERFORMED? An initial evaluation is performed to frame the desired treatment areas. A total of six hand pieces may be used to target an area that is larger than three CoolSculpt cool max applicators (approximately 12 SculpSure applicators). Each hand piece is gently applied using a piece of double sided tape and then wrapped around the body ensuring full contact. Patients have reported experiencing mild heat with an overall high level of comfort during the 15-minute session. HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM A CANDIDATE? Unlike other non-invasive fat removal procedures such as CoolSculpt and SculpSure TruSculpt ID does not have any BMI (body mass index) or weight restrictions. Almost anyone can be treated with the TruSculpt ID. HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED? Ninety-five percent of patients will only require one treatment per area! We can treat multiple (as many as three) areas in a single 15-minute session!

Land Of The Long White Wave “Surfing provides that little bit of an opportunity to get some Zen time, away from the toils of everyday society,” says Mike Spence, the Freeride surf store boss whose four decades in the business includes building boards, representing New Zealand at international level and founding a surfing publication. “It gives you time to think, to get that dose of serotonin through the sun and experience the invigoration of the water.”
They’re sentiments echoed by fellow store-owning and surfboard building icon BJ Smith, founder of Seasons Surfboards, who says that surfing “encompasses everything”: “That feeling of solitude, those beautiful days, it’s good for the mind, it’s good for the body, it’s good for the health. It’s just exhilarating.” It was another Kiwi board-builder—inspired by a couple of US travellers—that helped established modern surfing in New Zealand. When American surfers Bing Copeland and Rick Stoner landed in Aotearoa in the late 1950s, they made Piha Lifesaving Club their home for a few months befriending local lifesaver Peter Byers and showing him, along with some other locals, how to build those iconic fibreglass Malibu boards. When Mount Maunganui hosted the first national surfing championships in 1963, there were only a few hundred surfers in the entire country, but by the end of the decade the sport had exploded, with an estimated 15,000 practitioners. Aotearoa sent its first team to the world championships in California. New Zealand surf flick Children of the Sun was released in 1968, and eight years later, Piha hosted what would become the very first event of the first World Professional Surfing Tour. Since then, the country has regularly hosted all manner of international events, and just last September it was
Words — Jamie Christian Desplaces
announced that Piha will be the first stop of the 2020 season for competitors of the World Surf League’s Challenger Series. However, the history of the sport in Aotearoa goes back way further than the ‘50s, with accounts of the first European settlers arriving to the sight of Mãori surfing (whakahekeheke) on boards—or kopapa—constructed from logs or bags of kelp. Mãori surfing specialist Jhan Gavala did a PhD on the subject, and discovered that Taranaki was likely the first spot to be surfed—up to 700 years ago. In early Pãkehã journals he noted references to prominent wave riders such as Te Rangituataka from Ngati Maniapoto. Such pioneering Polynesians tie in nicely with the commonly held (mis)belief that Hawaiians invented the sport, but though those Pacific peoples undoubtedly perfected surfing, it’s now accepted to have started in Peru—possibly as long as 5,000 years ago. Pre-Inca pottery has been discovered depicting fishermen ‘surfing’ on boards-cum-boats fashioned from reeds known as caballitos de totara—a form of wave riding that’s still practised today. Surfing in Hawaii began around one thousand years ago, with 12th-century cave paintings proving it to be a popular part of Polynesian life, significantly, to be enjoyed as a pastime rather than as a method for catching fish. Captain Cook and his crew first witnessed it in Tahiti in 1777 (and Hawaii the following year), with his ship’s surgeon, William J Anderson, writing in his diary that he “could not help concluding that this man felt the most supreme pleasure”. Indeed, some historians believe that early accounts of surfing may have even partly inspired Thomas Jefferson to add the “inalienable right to the pursuit of happiness” to the Declaration of Independence! And as if Mark Twain wasn’t already awesome enough, he can also be credited as being one of the earliest surf writers (of sorts), too. “In one place we came upon a large company of naked natives, of both sexes and all ages, amusing themselves with the national pastime of surf-bathing,” he notes of his Hawaiian trip in Roughing It, published in 1872. Twain describes how surfers would wait for the perfect moment to fling themselves upon a “foamy crest” before “whizzing by like a bombshell!”. The scribe had a crack at surfing, though his wave-riding skills proved nowhere near as formidable as his legendary wit, his board striking the shore “in three quarters of a second”, sans rider, who had been flung to the seabed “with a couple of barrels of water in me”. BJ Smith also recounts that Hawaii happens to be the setting of some of his fondest surfing memories (“riding the Sunset Beach pipeline”), as well as “all the great spots around Africa”. But he came to be believe that ultimately, “there’s no place like home”.

So on that note, we take a look at some of New Zealand’s finest surf spots... West Auckland Starting closest to home, Piha, the birthplace of the modern sport in New Zealand, is the region’s most popular surfing spot for good reason—famed for its brooding black sands, legendary Lion Rock and year-round breaks. Less experienced wave riders should make for the south side, while north Piha provides a more challenging right-hander swell. Further north still, Muriwai’s equally enchanting black sands spill into equally regular right- and left hand breaks— though beginners need to be wary of rips. Plus, you can check out that legendary gannet colony. Northland Both coasts of Northland are pummelled by yearround surf to cater for all, with stand-out sites including Mangawhai Heads (whose left-hand break overlaps the river bar), and Sandy and Matauri Bays on the east. On the west awaits Ninety Mile Beach—especially The Bluff break around halfway along the sandy stretch—and Ahipara’s Shipwreck Bay, whose long barrel sections provide plenty of challenges for the more adroit surfers. the most experienced of surfers. There are ample areas for novices too. There are plenty of places to test your mettle in and around Gisborne, most notably Waikanae Beach (very beginner-friendly), Wainui Beach (right- and left-hand breaks, head to the southern end) and the never-ending barrels at Makorori Point. Raglan Happy place Raglan is not just among the coolest of Kiwi towns, but an internationally-renowned surfing destination home to Manu Bay, the longest left-hand break in the world (as far as 2km) and scenic star of iconic 1966 surf flick The Endless Summer. Ngarunui Beach is best for beginners, and Whale Bay for those with more hours under their belt (or wetsuit).

Coromandel Peninsula Another gem right on our doorstep (kind of), the Coromandel peninsula is peppered with heaps of hip surf spots, most notably along its east coast. More serious surfers should make for Te Karo Bay’s right- and lefthand breaks, just above Tairau, while the golden sands of Hot Water Beach not only overlook opposing breaks at either end, but also boast those iconic hot springs to soothe the muscles afterwards. Whangamata is one of the region’s coolest hubs, home to one of New Zealand’s most picturesque coastal stretches, spilling onto some of its most reliable surf, usually suitable for riders of all skills. Bay of Plenty Mount Maunganui, or ‘The Mount’, is the bay’s most well-known—and probably most popular—surfing destination owing to its hollow shore and right point breaks good for all levels, while Matakana Island, across Tauranga Harbour, offers swells for the more confident. Arataki, 10 minutes from Tauranga, is another fine spot for all skill levels with both left- and right-hand breaks. Eastland North Island’s east coast is home to some of New Zealand’s most consistent breaks that, though may not be the tallest, provide plenty of provoking runs for even
Taranaki Riders know they’re in for a treat in any region with a designated ‘Surf Highway’. Officially State Highway 45, the route skirts the Taranaki peninsula (named one of the world’s best regions by Lonely Planet in 2017), its most northern beach being Fitzroy, famed for its hollow barrels and driftwood-strewn sands. Other gems include Oakura, backed by eateries and boutiques, and the ominously named Graveyards known for a left-hand break best tackled by the more confident. Not only will you often have one of the countless beaches here entirely to yourself, but will be surfing in the shadow of the mighty Mount Taranaki. Canterbury The Canterbury coast has exceptional swells that hit from all directions, with many of the best breaks, conveniently, to be found around Christchurch. Sumner is the obvious choice, the Stoke Street end boasts a gentle break for beginners, while Taylor’s Mistake, just under an hour from the city lures the more skilled surfers. New Brighton and North Beaches both offer generally short but heavy rides that can be tackled by novices. Down South For the ultimate in secluded surfing, make for the breathtaking Catlin’s Coast on beaches such as Purpoise Bay, where you have a fine chance of sharing the waves with some Hector’s dolphins—and yellow-eyed penguins at nearby Curio Bay. Dunedin is a fine base to explore some beaches that boast both left- and right-hand breaks for all, like the golden Smails and Karitane Beaches. St Clair Beach is much visited owing to its reliable break (some say New Zealand’s most consistent) and bar-lined promenade.

The Chateau of Dreams
NOV 2019
The Chateau was famed not only for its cinematic alpine scenery framed by floor-to-ceiling windows, but for its soirees that attracted VIPs from around the world—including the Queen.
Few lodgings in Aotearoa match the heritage, the grace or the gravitas of Chateau Tongariro Hotel, and this year marks the 90th birthday of the multi-award-winning Kiwi institution that’s simply known as ‘The Chateau’ to its friends. “The whole establishment conveyed an impression of luxury and spaciousness that is found in few hotels built in more recent decades,” mused Harry Wigley of The Chateau, in The Mount Cook Way – The First Fifty Years of the Mount Cook Company, while Lonely Planet labels it “undeniably romantic”. Set in the shadow Mount Ruapehu and its surrounding, snowy horizon, the majestic classical architecture of this grand ol’ 1920s construction wouldn’t appear out of place on the pages of The Great Gatsby, or the set of The Sound of Music. Indeed, upon its founding The Chateau was famed not only for its cinematic alpine scenery framed by floorto-ceiling windows, but for its soirees that attracted VIPs from around the world—including the Queen. Some say the crowning glory of the Central Plateau is laced with secret passageways and is possibly even haunted. So, a backstory befitting a Hollywood classic, too. Tongariro National Park is New Zealand’s (and one of the world’s) oldest, comprising land gifted to the nation by Horonuku Te Heu Heu Tukino, chief of Ngati Tuwharetoa, in 1887 (the hotel’s most prestigious suite is now named after him). An especially significant gesture considering it houses the tapu peaks of Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe, it was the chief’s hope that these mountain gods would serve as protectors for all the people of Aotearoa for all of time. Come the 1920s, Prime Minister Gordon Coates yearned to build a globally-revered retreat to truly put the national park—and the nation—on the map, so sought the advice of the pioneering Mount Cook Tourist Company founder Rudolph Wigley. It led to the formation of the Tongariro Park Tourist Company Limited, who enlisted legendary architect Herbert Hall of Timaru to envisage a Georgian masterpiece like no other in the whole of Aotearoa. Rising alongside the original Whakapapa ski huts, astonishingly, the grand opening took place just eight months after the foundation stone was laid in March 1929. It soon gained a reputation among the most discerning of local and international adventurers and entrepreneurs as the most tasteful of destinations, offering the finest foods,
wines and spirits all accompanied by roaring laughter and log fires. Skiers and mountaineers would don their most dapper of dinner wear to dine on oysters that had arrived by steam train from Bluff. To think way back then, its hand basins with running hot and cold water were considered state-of-the-art! Today, much of the original old world character is retained thanks to iconic features such as chandeliers dangling above the 460-square-metre Ruapehu Lounge, lashings of dark polished timbers, a grand piano, billiards table, fireplaces, and the grand-arched Ngauruhoe picture window that overlooks Middle-earth’s ‘Mount Doom’. A series of eruptions from those neighbouring volcanoes in the 1940s forced the closure of The Chateau for three years. It had already been struggling owing to the outbreak of the second world war that saw many of its skiing clientele head to battle, and tourist numbers tumble. Its misfortune continued well into the next decade, even serving as an asylum following an earthquake that damaged a hospital in the Hutt Valley. However, The Chateau’s fortunes changed when purchased by New Zealand’s Tourist Hotel Corporation in 1957, and the following regeneration of the surrounding ski fields. Ownership has altered a handful of times more since as it continued to flourish further still. For its 75th anniversary in 2005, a new wing added 39 more rooms. In 1993, Tongariro National Park became the first location in the world to be granted dual Unesco World Heritage Site status owing to both its cultural significance and visual magnificence. So how fitting that the region’s premier hotel boasts Category One Historic Listed Building status, blending the best of today with the beauty of yesteryear. Where better to bask in the glow of a crackling log fire overlooking such world-recognised wonder, as a glass of mulled wine warms your cupped hands? Or to sip on a cooling cocktail following a trek among Aotearoa’s most sacred peaks? There is high tea, there is fine dining, there are tennis courts, a pool, a sauna, and a beauty therapy spa. There are world-class snow fields on the doorstep and there are life-affirming trails. So as The Chateau welcomes its 90th birthday, it welcomes you into another world.

CALIFORNIA KIWI Words — Jamie Christian Desplaces
“We’re a voluntary organisation that’s all about Kiwis helping Kiwis,” says Keith Flamank, president of Kiwis in LA. “We have people in their 20s through to their 70s. Some of the younger ones have arrived to try and make it Hollywood, whereas others have been here for 30 or 40 years, successful in business. There’s a huge diversity.” 68
Kiwis in LA is a California-based organisation that was established in 2000 to enable New Zealanders living in Los Angeles and the Orange Counties to “get together and keep each other up to date on things New Zealand” such as “where to buy Marmite” and find out “who makes the best pies”! Popular regular events include the Waitangi Day Brekkie, Summer Picnic, Air New Zealand Art Show and Wine Tasting, and, of course the Christmas Party. There’s even a local group who perform pretty a mean haka. Not only is it reassuring to hear a Kiwi accent when based so far from home, but, adds Keith, it’s important for the kids to keep a connection to their roots, too.
advertising. “There are quite a few Kiwis now in tech, and there are smaller companies who have come over to distribute in the States. One company that has done really well here is Pic’s Peanut Butter.” So, is Kiwis in LA about networking as well as socialising? “Absolutely, yes. That’s something that we really try to build. We love introducing people and businesses to each other. We send out monthly newsletters and have a good social media presence. It’s all about community.”
“Quite a few of the children were born in the States with their parents having moved over for work,” he continues. “So, it’s nice that they keep it up, not just the parents, but the kids. They keep the Kiwi-ness alive!” Keith, who was born in Gore but grew up in Christchurch, now lives in Long Beach with his partner, who hails from New York. “We’re 30 minutes south of Los Angeles—I try to avoid going up there because of the traffic,” he chuckles. “But it’s lovely where we are, a block from the beach and a block from a lagoon. And the weather is always beautiful.” He has lived across the Pacific since way back in 2001, arriving just days after 11 September. “There has always been some form of expat organisation here because there’s has always been a fair New Zealand business presence,” says Keith, who formerly worked in V ERV E M AGA ZIN E .CO.N Z
The Great Kiwi Diaspora
According to the international data company Statista, 14.1 percent of the Kiwi population lives overseas—that’s twice as many as the UK, and three times more than the Netherlands. Of the OCED nations, only Ireland has more at 17.5 percent. Just 0.5 percent of the US population lives abroad.
The Kiwis in LA database is around 1,200 membersstrong, but, Keith laughs, who knows how many Kiwis are out there: “They pop up out of the woodwork all of the time, especially at rugby screenings! You can be in the middle of nowhere in Illinois and come across a Kiwi.” I ask him how the reputation of New Zealand has evolved over the near-20 years he’s been in California. “It’s becoming better known all of the time, people are definitely more aware of it. I certainly noticed it begin with things like Lord of the Rings. The first thing any American will say is that they’ve heard how beautiful it is and express a desire to go there. They were aware of the Christchurch quakes and more recently the terrorist attack. It got a lot sympathy and they were very impressed with the New Zealand reaction. We also did some fundraisers here.” Aside from rattling off the obvious (“Whittaker’s chocolates, the coffee, but not Marmite!”), Keith’s a little stumped when pressed on what he most misses about life in New Zealand. He’s “happy and content” and comes ‘home’ regularly, bringing his partner over the Pacific at least 30 times. So much of life is so similar in California. It all feels so familiar: the great wine, spectacular landscape, same language, “though better weather!” Plus, he adds, it’s just been so long. Keith, having immediately clocked my British accent, says that it must be the same-butdifferent feeling for me in Aotearoa. “Like a parallel universe,” I suggest. “Yes,” agrees Keith. “It’s like a parallel universe.”
However, as written in the 2016 book Going Places: Migration, Economics and the Future of New Zealand by Julie Fry and Hayden Glass, getting an exact number is nigh on impossible without census data from all the other countries. The generally agreed figure hovers around one million. Australia’s 2016 census reveals there to be more than half-a-million Kiwis residing across the ditch, and in the UK it’s just shy of 60,000, according to their Office for National Statistics. A 2018 survey by HSBC concluded Kiwis who head abroad can bag an average salary increase of $32,000 a year. Similarly, research by Kiwi expat network has concluded 40 percent of overseas Kiwis to earn in excess of $100,000, while 80 percent earn the average NZ wage or higher. The most financially rewarding destinations for Kiwis are the UK, US, Australia, China, Singapore, Switzerland and the UAE. As for what expat Kiwis most miss, Kiwi Corner Dairy, an online retailer of New Zealand products, say that their biggest sellers include Whittaker’s chocolate (especially the Jelly Tip block), Pascall’s Pineapple Lumps and Sunshine clothes pegs. One customer regularly orders New Zealand dog treats from the US, and they even send parcels to the McMurdo Station in Antarctica.

Favourite Places:
Edinburgh
Travellers so often know other countries better than they know their own regions. That’s certainly true of this British-born writer who has explored just about every nook and cranny of New Zealand yet was past 30 years old before first stepping foot on Scottish soil! But, thanks to my Celtic fiancée, how I’ve enjoyed making up for lost time.
Edinburgh isn’t just the UK’s most beautiful city, but one of the most enchanting spots anywhere on Earth. History hangs heavy over its labyrinth of cobbled streets, and you sense its presence with every step. The Scottish capital is also the festival capital of the world—including the fabled Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival—with combined tickets sales eclipsed only by the Olympics and football World Cup. Like Auckland, Edinburgh is fabulously green (the greenest city in Britain), sits in the shadow of extinct volcanoes (most notably, Arthur’s Seat) and overlooks an endless expanse of water, known as the Firth of Forth. Only London has more listed buildings, while Edinburgh’s oldest pub, the Sheep Heid Inn, was founded around the time humans first landed on Aotearoa’s shores. If you can, it’s worth braving the city for Christmas and Hogmanay to witness its evocative landscape blanketed in a layer of glistening frost or snow. Morning Walk The best view of Edinburgh is from Arthur’s Seat, but verdant Calton Hill comes a close—and far more convenient—second. Protruding right from the heart of the cityscape, it takes just a few minutes’ strolling to be rewarded with expansive urban, rural and water views. Also, atop its gentle peak rests a handful of historic structures such as an unfinished replica Acropolis (building began in 1822, but it was deemed to expensive too finish), and the City Observatory. Breakfast There’s a vibrant café culture in Edinburgh—the city is said to have more eateries per head than anywhere else in the UK—including a few where JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter (most notably The Elephant House and Nicolson’s Café). But, I’m always glad to nurse a hangover at Southern
NOV 2019
Cross (a name also befitting our Antipodean audience), a bustling, two-tiered café that serves a hearty Scottish breakfast—including some nicely spiced haggis— alongside aromatic artisan coffee. The Royal Mile City strolls don’t come much more memorable than the main artery of the Royal Mile that connects the Queen’s official Scottish residence, Holyrood Palace, to Edinburgh Castle. The heart—and soul—of Edinburgh’s Old Town, the strip snakes past markets, museums, antique stores, and the 14th-century St Giles Cathedral with its iconic crown steeple. There are a multitude of classic, British pubs—look out for the Jolly Judge on the adjoining James Court, a tiny underground tavern replete with timber beam ceilings, a log fire and real ales; it’s like stepping back in time. The strip also serves as the jumping off point for many of the city’s legendary ghost tours of the nearby ancient laneways and underground vaults. Lunch The views from the hard-to-pronounce Chaophraya’s rooftop conservatory (make sure to book a table ‘outside’), stretch all the way over to the firth, meaning this one’s best for lunch or an earlier dinner. Fabulous modern Thai food accompanies by some imaginatively mixed drinks—save space for the chilli chocolate cocktail. Edinburgh Castle Fit for a fairytale, Edinburgh Castle is perched atop a volcanic crag that serves as the crowning glory of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. The architectural wonder was built in parts, beginning way back in the 12th century. Much was designed during the Renaissance, with memorials added after the first world war. Among its most famous residents are the Scottish Crown Jewels and keep an eye out for the tiny easy-to-miss enclave that
serves as a cemetery for military dogs. Come nightfall, the gently illuminated castle goes next-level gorgeous. Film There are, unsurprisingly, heaps of awesome arthouse cinemas in the Scottish capital, but the Edinburgh Filmhouse is the favourite. It sets the ideal moviegoing tone owing to its setting in a former stone church now kitted out with old-school theatre-style seating and substantial red curtains guarding the screens. There are three auditoriums and a bar, and it also hosts the world’s longest running film festival. Dinner The Printing Press is an uber-sophisticated, special occasion destination in honour of the city’s rich, publishing heritage (Edinburgh was the first Unesco city of literature). This bar and restaurant is famed for its exceptional cocktails and modern take on classic Scottish fare (like grouse) enjoyed on leather studded seating beneath decorative stone ceilings supported by marble pillars. Heather and I enjoyed some bubbly here with her family following our engagement. The Scotch Whisky Experience There are undoubtedly less touristy—and more authentic—whisky tasting sessions to be had on the Isles and in the Highlands, but the sheer sight of the world’s largest collection of this writer’s favourite drink sure is breathtaking. Interactive displays and informative talks concerning the history of whisky are complemented by a tasting session and tour of the nearly three-and-a-halfthousand-bottle-strong scotch collection, including some of the rarest and most valuable tipples on the planet— some worth tens of thousands of dollars (but, alas, you don’t get to sample those ones).

"For those looking for a little more than a cruise, World Journeys has combined the best of both worlds with some indepth touring of Venice, Tuscany and the charming villages of the Cinque Terre, followed by an extensive 20-night Mediterranean cruise." Library of Celsus, ruins of ancient city Ephesus Buried Roman cities, teetering coastal villages, aweinspiring art and sun-kissed beaches — the Mediterranean has a special magic that always leaves you wanting more! Naturally a cruise is the best way to experience it all. With iconic port cities lining the coast, you can pull in at a unique spot each day, and retreat to your luxurious ‘home base’ each night. For those looking for a little more than a cruise, World Journeys has combined the best of both worlds with some in-depth touring of Venice, Tuscany and the charming villages of the Cinque Terre, followed by an extensive 20-night Mediterranean cruise. Departing Rome, you set sail for the walled city of Dubrovnik with its polished limestone streets, theatrical architecture and charming cafes. The easiest way to explore is simply on foot. Take a walk on the city wall for a bird’s eye view! On to Greece, the island of Corfu is infused with culture and history, set amongst stunning beaches, verdant mountains and traditional villages. From Katakolon head to Olympia, founded in the eighth century BC and site of the original Olympic Games. Athens is deserving of the often over-used word “iconic”. Ancient structures neighbour modern apartments, performances are staged in old amphitheatres, and millennia-old monuments are scattered around the Acropolis. Santorini is just picture perfect, the white-washed buildings set against blue skies and azure seas. Turkey also boasts impressive ancient ruins – with one of most legendary cities of the ancient world at Ephesus.
BEST OF THE MED
Arriving in Naples, you have the chance to visit Pompeii, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, but save some energy for Rome. Need we mention the ancient Roman Forum and Coliseum, St Peter’s Basilica, Michelangelo’s Peter and the Sistine Chapel? Dive in! Visit the eclectic island of Gibraltar, and enjoy a real taste of Spain in Cadiz and Barcelona. Stop in at the famous Dali Museum of Palamos, then delight in the colourful Gaudi architecture, and salivate your way around the Bouqueria Markets of Las Ramblas. Get a glimpse of the lives of the rich and famous in Monte Carlo, with its casinos, boutique-lined boulevards and glitzy restaurants, but make sure you wander off the main drag and you’ll find some charming old streets. Livorno is the gateway to Pisa and Florence, but if you’re happy to enjoy a leisurely local lunch, we can recommend the cacciuco, a local spicy fish stew. Returning to Rome, reflect on the diversely amazing ports-of-call you have just experienced. A small group of no more than 18 guests will be hosted on this journey, but that’s where any resemblance to a standard tour group ends. Special experiences have been included to provide that ‘wow’ factor, such a wine tasting in Tuscany, dinner at an olive farm and a private walking tour of the world’s oldest Jewish quarter in Venice. Your World Journeys host is there to take care of tipping and generally smooth the way, leaving you to simply relax and enjoy the very best of the Med.

Camera & Coincidence One of the many wonderful things about writing for a living is the variety of experiences that it affords. Story ideas can fall from the strangest of places, sometimes seemingly straight into your lap from the sky. Having invested in a half-decent action camera a few months months back I decided to sell my previous trusty point and shoot (a Canon PowerShot G9X), and so listed it on Trade Me where it was purchased by a Mr Alan Marks of Tauranga. WO R D S — J AM I E C H R I S T I AN D E S P L AC E S
NOV 2019
Much to my embarrassment I made a bit of an error in the listing description, but Alan was very gracious and we wound up exchanging pleasantries via email. Turns out he needed the camera for an upcoming motorbike tour of the Indian Himalayas, a three-week self-treat for his retirement. I told him the camera had so far already snapped the Southern Alps and the Scottish Highlands, so the Himalayas would be a fitting step up. Then I learnt his wife not only hails from Scotland, like my wife-to-be, but she too is called Heather! Alan and I were even due to travel to India at the same time (though to different parts), and so, deciding that it was one coincidence too many, I asked him to tell me all about his tour upon his return. “Most of my life I’ve been a keen tramper, and regularly attained self-set goals,” Alan tells me. “But I had never been to that part of the world before and it was a wonderful opportunity to combine it with an adventurous motorcycle trip—especially having watched so many documentaries and YouTube videos!” Alan was part of an 18-strong group (organised through AB Original Tours) of mainly Aussies and Englishmen, with a couple of Kiwis and a Swede. “The youngest was aged 31, but most participants were in their late 50s or early 60s,” says Alan. “There was only one female.” Not Heather? “No! She was very supportive of my plan to do it, as she has always been of all my interests. But she has yet to be a pillion.” Alan’s coolest of bike choice is a Royal Enfield Classic—he’s taken up motorcycling again in retirement having first done it as a teenager. “It has opened up new social circles and I have explored my own country a lot more,” he says. “Riding an Enfield often engages me in conversations with strangers who admire the classic style and want to talk about the good old days, and I’m often complimented on the great restoration!”
Since 2016, he’s completed a couple of Postie Bike Challenges in Australia (“both about 3,500km on exPost Office 110c Honda motorbikes”), but says that his Indian adventure was the most memorable “by a country mile”. Alan, who spent 42 years in the police force— including 20 years as a forensic photographer—travelled to India with his brother, Peter, a senior constable stationed in Taumarunui. “A crew of five travelled in three four-wheel drive support vehicles,” he says. “The crew included two mechanics and it seemed nothing was too much trouble for them. Twice they stripped a motor completely down and rebuilt it with a new piston and barrel, all in about three hours at the end of a day’s riding. Pretty impressive.” Their journey began in Delhi, from where they took a train then minibus to Shimla in the northern region of Himachal Pradesh. From there, the group began the Spiti Valley circuit. “The road traffic took some getting used to as there doesn’t appear to be many rules except for lots of horn use and to expect the unexpected,” chuckles Alan. “The unexpected could include cows on the motorway on a blind bend, wandering mules, slips, washouts, or herdsmen with flocks of animals!” Even in the poorest and most remote regions of the country, Alan says that he noticed schoolchildren waiting for their bus “immaculately dressed in school uniform”. As for highlights, Alan beams that they happened pretty much every day. “The finish in Shimla was pretty special though,” he admits. “We had done it! And probably quoted Ed Hillary’s wellknown words after he conquered Mount Everest.” For those that don’t know that legendary catchphrase, Google is your friend.

Pool Perfect WO R D S —J AM I E C H R I S T I AN D E S P L AC E S
For at least 4,500 years, people have been plunging into pools. The Great Bath of Mohenjo Daro in modern day Pakistan is the earliest known man-made pool, built using waterproofed bricks, and likely used for purifying religious purposes rather than pleasure. The Ancient Greeks also built bathing pools, though it was the Romans who built the first swimming baths—including heated ones during the first century BC. 88
But it would be nearly two thousand more years before swimming pools became mainstream. A handful of public indoor pools were constructed around London in the late 1830s, the first US swimming pool opened in Boston in 1868—and around this time they began springing up in Aotearoa, too. Following the founding of the modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, swimming’s popularity ballooned. Below, we bring you a bounty of some of the most beautifully designed pools from around the world...
Marina Bay Sands, Singapore
MARINA BAY SANDS, SINGAPORE Undoubtedly one of the world’s most recognisable pools (thanks in part to its appearance in Crazy Rich Asians and documentary features by the likes of National Geographic), Marina Bay Sands Hotel pool sits within a one-hectare ship-shaped platform overlooking the harbour and Singapore’s stunning cityscape. Fifty-seven storeys up, the world’s largest infinity pool spans three towers, stretches for 150 metres (that’s three Olympic pools), and holds nearly one-and-a-half-million litres of water that spills over a 146-metre-high vanishing edge. This one’s best enjoyed with a glass of champagne at sunset.
BONDI ICEBERGS, AUSTRALIA It’s not so much the design of Bondi Icebergs pool that bags it a place on this list, but its spectacular seaside setting—perched so close to the Pacific Ocean that waves regularly crash over the surrounding rocks and into it (the pool is filled with saltwater). The site—which comprises a 50-metre aquamarine pool that runs pretty much parallel to the seafront, with a perpendicular 25-metre kids’ pool—was developed for Bondi Beach lifeguards by the Icebergs Swimming Club in 1929, and now also boasts a sauna and bar and eatery with mesmeric views. HANGING GARDENS, BALI With a name that brings to mind one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Hanging Gardens of Bali have a lot to live up to—and don’t disappoint. Sprouting from the jungles of hypnotic Ubud, this spot was named as having ‘the most stunning views’ in the 2018 Boutique Hotel Awards, thanks in part to its twintier pool that almost fools guests into thinking they’re swimming atop the rainforest. The 44-villa site sits suspended on a mountainside with a 45-degree slope. SAN ALFONSO DEL MAR SEAWATER POOL, CHILE An engineering marvel, Chile’s San Alfonso del Mar Seawater Pool, is so large it verges on being given its own sea status! Fittingly, the water is pumped straight from the Pacific Ocean (filtered and treated) and reaches a tropical-like 26°C while coloured a tropical turquoise hue. This mass of water measures more than 1,000 metres in length, and covers eight hectares, easily large enough to kayak, sail or scuba dive (it hosts these activities and more). The San Alfonso Del Mar is positioned so close to the ocean that from many angles the two bodies of water appear to merge into one—a pool that’s an oyster’s world.
Grace Santorini, Greece GRACE SANTORINI, GREECE From cave pools to natural lagoons like Giola in Thassos, Greece is awash with spectacular swimmingcum-chilling spots, but we’re going for the infinity pool at Santorini’s Grace Hotel—the largest of its kind on the island. The boutique lodging tumbles tier by tier down the slopes of the Santorini Caldera, its white stone architecture a stark contrast against the verdant volcanic landscape until it stops dead at the expanse of brilliant blue water overlooking the Cyclades Islands and Aegean horizon famed for the world’s most spectacular sunsets.
BELMOND HOTEL CARUSO, ITALY Classic meets contemporary in striking fashion at the Belmond Hotel, a “heavenly retreat between the sea and the sky”. The hotel, set in a former 11th-century palace atop a 300-metre cliff, still retains much of its retro-resplendence (think marble corridors, antique furnishings, classical paintings, lemon groves and rose gardens) and so the infinity pool makes for an incongruous addition to the grounds. But its understated elegance works wonderfully, rippling gently beneath ancient stone walls and overlooking the Amalfi Coast and the town of Ravello from the region’s highest point.
ST REGIS LHASA RESORT, CHINA Think Tibet and you’re most likely to think of Buddhism, but the pool at St Regis Lhasa Resort is all about the bling. The only indoor pool on the list is lined with 24-carat gold leaves and crystals that cause its saltwater to glow like treasure, while being heated to a super-comfortable 28-32. More akin to a giant hot tub, the ‘Gold Energy Pool’ may not be open-air, but there are views of the local lake and Potala Palace.
AMANGIRI, USA This astonishing oasis-like pool in Utah’s desert has been dug around a 165-million-year-old monolith at the luxury Amangiri resort and serves as its centrepiece. Built using local rock, the massive, curved water feature is set within a sunken courtyard, blending beautifully with the sprawling sandstone landscape that’s peppered by giant Jurassic-age, Mars-like mesa rock formations famed for their flat tops.
FOUR SEASONS SAFARI LODGE SERENGETI, TANZANIA Literally and metaphorically possibly the coolest place on the entire continent to escape the African heat, the Four Seasons Safari Lodge pool may only be 25 metres in length, but what it overlooks is immeasurably mind blowing. The free-form infinity pool is positioned in such a way that almost appears to tumble into a natural watering hole below—a watering hole that’s frequented by families of African elephants. Beyond are endless skies that rise above the wild plains of the Serengeti that are patrolled by the Big Five of lions, leopards, buffalo, rhinos and those elephants. The pool’s bar is open from sunrise until sunset—there may be no better place on Earth to enjoy a cocktail. Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, Tanzania

GOOD FORM | OMK Rodney Kinsman graduated from the Central School of Art in London in 1965 with a goal to usher in a new era of modern British design. In 1966 Rodney founded OMK to produce the progressive designs he intended to create. The company quickly became a key figure in the HighTech design movement and produced many of the highly successful furniture ranges retailed through Terence Conran’s Habitat stores in the 1960s and '70s. Rodney Kinsman's aspiration has always been to design progressive furniture employing contemporary technology and using modern materials rather than simply following tradition. Today Kinsman is a celebrated designer and his enduring designs for OMK are regarded as icons of 20th century British design. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the V&A, London's Design Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. 15 WILLIAMSON AVE, PONSONBY GOODFORM.CO.NZ

Green Spaces In Urban Places
NOV 2019
Gardens were first established throughout Aotearoa by Mãori who introduced crops including the kumara while incorporating native species such as the cabbage and karaka trees. They later embraced traditional Western harvests including tobacco, corn and cabbage and by the turn of the 19th century many industrious iwi were turning a tidy profit trading their crops with early European settlers, whalers and sealers. Those Pãkehã had been impressed by how well organised Mãori gardens were, expertly split into areas of up to five hectares on sun-kissed north facing slopes. Back in Victorian Britain, in response to overcrowding and ever-worsening health risks in urban centres, parliamentary stenographer Ebenezer Howard founded the Garden City Movement, writing in his 1898 tome, Tomorrow: A Peaceful Path to Real Reform: “Human society and the beauty of nature are meant to be enjoyed together. Town and country must be married, and out of this joyous union will spring a new hope, a new life, a new civilisation.” And so the central philosophy of the movement was that within all urban spaces should be ample green ones in order to nurture an environment that made the most of both city and rural life. Letchworth, outside London, was the world’s first garden city, built in 1903, with streets following the lines of the natural topography, and peppered by plenty of parks. Though there had been a degree of town planning in Aotearoa throughout the 19th century, hubs still suffered from overpopulation and outbreaks of disease. The Garden City Movement soon found its way down under, and ‘garden suburbs’ modelled on Hamstead, London, sprung up first around North Island. The Town Planning Act was passed in 1926, and Christchurch, with its reputation as the most English of Kiwi towns, was to become New Zealand’s ‘Garden City’. In honour of the movement and the green city spaces that it spawned, Verve brings you six of the world’s most wonderful public parks. Miracle Garden, Dubai This record-breaking recreational spot is spread across 72,000 square metres—of desert! Yet, it is home to more than 50 million blooms, including the world’s largest flower arrangement (it entered the Guinness Book of World Records in 2016) that comprises a full-size replica of an Emirates Airbus A380 (that’s the double-decker aeroplane). Other features include pyramids and real-size houses built from blooms such as petunias, geraniums and marigolds, its dozens of flower varieties joined by the region’s first indoor butterfly sanctuary. Fittingly opened on Valentine’s Day 2013, the Miracle Garden attracts 1.5 million visitors a year. Kew Gardens, London Gardens don’t come much more iconic than Kew, just 14 kilometres southwest of central London. The now-132-hectare Unesco World Heritage Site was founded in the mid-1700s, serving as a royal retreat and destination for eminent scientists
and landscapers to study and experiment with plants. The following century saw the construction of Palm House, which now hosts 10 climatic zones; and Temperate House, which remains the world’s largest Victorian greenhouse. There are now more than 50,000 living plants in what is also one of the world’s leading conservation centres. Fun fact: Julius Caesar is believed to have crossed the River Thames at Kew during his first British outing in 53 BC. Botanic Garden, Singapore A big reason why Singapore can lay claim to being Asia’s Garden City is because of this tropical wonderland. The city-state’s oldest green space fittingly also became its first Unesco World Heritage thanks in no small part to its National Orchid Garden, the world’s grandest collection at over 60,000-strong. Other highlights include a lake, Fragrant Garden that’s regularly visited by butterflies and a rainforest walk. Astonishing to think it was founded way back in 1859 on a 24-hectare disused plantation—you can learn all about that, and more, at the on-site, state-of-the-art museum. Jardin des Tuileries, Paris Savour the crunch of gravel beneath your feet as your wander the Tuileries Gardens of the French capital, named after the tile factories that once stood on the site. In 1564, the Palais des Tuileries was built by Queen Catherine de Medici, and, a century later, King Louis XIV’s renowned gardener, André Le Nôtre fashioned the grounds into the formal style for which they are so famed. The 25-hectare gardens serve as a border between the Louvre and the Place de la Concorde—and offers views of the Eiffel Tower—while housing ponds, sculptures by Aristide Maillol, and a museum with works of Monet. Grant Park, Chicago Chicago’s ‘Central Park’, Grant Park covers 130 hectares and incorporates many of the Windy City’s most magical sights. Chicago’s impressive centrepiece boasts a centrepiece of its own in the form of Buckingham Fountain. One of the world’s largest, the lakeside water feature was built in 1927, and modelled after the fountains of Versailles. Other mustdos include the internationally acclaimed Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum of Natural History and the Shedd Aquarium—one of the Earth’s biggest. The Adler Planetarium is the oldest in the US, and there are heaps of outdoor artworks to display as you tackle the 29-kilometre Lakefront Trail. Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne One of the many highlights of Melbourne’s most magical of spaces is the Aboriginal Heritage Walk where visitors learn about the medicinal and culinary uses of local plants from an indigenous guide. A lake cruise affords the opportunity to check out some native birds and aquatic plants, while Guilfoyle’s Volcano is a historic reservoir that can be explored via boardwalks and viewing platforms. Once you’ve worked up a thirst and appetite, kick back at The Terrace where you can enjoy high tea to views of these gardens that are home to around 50,000 plants. Hard to imagine that this was once 38 hectares of swampland. Words — Jamie Christian Desplaces

Crafter by Wüsthof now available at Day & Age The Crafter is the latest release by Wüsthof, as a homage to over 200 years of knife-making tradition. The German manufacturers of premium knives have crafted handles made from smoked oak, with interlocking brass riveting and specially hardened steel for the blades. As the name Crafter suggests, it is a robust work knife – made for unique cooks and dynamic people who are not only shy of hard work, but also appreciate the stylish rustic aesthetic of this extraordinarily high-quality knife. Of course being German, they don’t like to boast, so we’ll do it for them! The ergonomic knife handle sits perfectly in the hand and curves in a way that prevents slipping. It is made of waterresistant smoked oak, which gives the knife an unmistakable character thanks to its individual grain, then finished with traditional brass rivets – truly a thing of beauty! The mark of a quality knife has much to do with the tang. As an extension
of the blade, the tang gives the forged knife a reliable stability. In addition, it ensures good balance as a counterweight to the cutting blade. In short, the Crafter series offers all the characteristics of a premium knife range – not just a pleasure to the eye, but with a whole new level of enjoyment to everyday food preparation. Go to www.dayandage.co.nz to view the full range.

November brings more sunshine and also international connections to our shores, including cross-cultural conversations old and new. Art is for everyone, and that includes the little ones. If it is tricky to get the kids interested in art and culture then there are some great things on offer this month. Here’s what’s happening in November:
Rebecca Baumann: Automatic Drawing Starkwhite Australian artist Rebecca Baumann’s mesmerising works use colour and movement to evoke response, activating viewers’ senses in fleeting and unexpected ways. Created using flipdot display, an electro-magnetic signage originally created for the stock market, Baumann strips this early technology of its function and reimagines it as choreography. In action the works feels like a code is being transmitted, communicating with colour, sound, and movement in a language we can’t quite understand. Opens 26 November. starkwhite.co.nz Art For Kids And Families Voyage to Aotearoa: Tupaia and the Endeavour introduces young ones to the remarkable Tupaia, the Tahitian navigator, high priest, and artist who played a pivotal role on Cook’s first journey, at Auckland Museum. This family-friendly exhibition invites kids to experience the voyage with lots of interactive activities. Accompanied by a new children’s book, The Adventures of Tupaia. aucklandmuseum.com Te Tuhi Contemporary Art offers great family activities to accompany each exhibition along with popular children’s art courses. SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER — 21 NOVEMBER
PISCES 19 FEBRUARY — 20 MARCH
CANCER 21 JUNE — 22 JULY
You are feeling brave, positive, and optimistic. Improvements or other opportunities at or through work can come seemingly out of the blue, boosting your confidence and improving your attitude towards the work you do. You can become especially excited and hopeful about a new health and wellness programme and this lifts your spirits to new heights, giving you a sense of having a new lease on life.
The urge to work is weaker than usual, so if you can manage it, down time or a vacation might be in order. Finances are strong, particularly those related to the communications industry and online endeavours. You are especially intuitive when it comes to financial prospects. This is a time when you free yourself of personal inhibitions and a time of more spontaneous expression. Casual love affairs that have grown stale may be left behind now.
Long-term goals for personal fulfilment come into focus and give you a sense of moving forward in a positive direction. Some added responsibilities are likely during this period, but they are not felt to be burdens. This is a time when you invest in yourself and in the people around you that you respect. You are radiating energy that makes you more attractive, and, as a result, opportunities are that much stronger for romantic attention.
SAGITTARIUS 22 NOVEMBER — 21 DECEMBER
ARIES 21 MARCH — 19 APRIL
LEO 23 JULY — 22 AUGUST
You are feeling especially motivated to accomplish a lot of projects or tasks now. The enthusiasm of previous months is returning with great power. It’s amazing how much more you can produce when you are feeling the inner spark. Investments in stocks and other speculative matters could earn profits. Healthy, wise risks are likely to pay off, but be careful of overconfidence in speculative investments.
Your personal philosophy will be changing. This month gives you a push towards adopting beliefs that truly work for you in the real world. You are learning about your need for self-expression through adventure. Creative projects are likely to fare well during this cycle, and could possibly even bring some type of recognition or reward. Love and romance may come into your life or an existing romance is enhanced with good humour and warmth.
It’s a time to pursue the dreams, ideals, and ideas you have put on the back burner. You are also learning to express yourself with more authenticity and power. Your willpower and determination are especially strong this month, and it’s an excellent period in which to get to the root of long-standing problems and take steps to eliminate them, thereby transforming your life in positive ways.
CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER — 19 JANUARY
TAURUS 20 APRIL — 20 MAY
VIRGO 23 AUGUST — 22 SEPTEMBER
A surprising and exciting opportunity in the romance, recreation, or creativity department is likely this month. For some of you, a financial windfall is possible, or a great opportunity for a new home or real estate. Some of you will be discovering new hobbies or latent talents. Others will be more interested in sports or other forms of recreation, and deriving much pleasure from these activities.
Your willingness to enjoy yourself and explore your creativity now brings new opportunities, or you might find that new avenues open up to you for exploring new ways of having fun. You could be inspired by someone else’s creative projects and begin a new and rewarding hobby. You might find that possibilities for casual love relationships open up to you now, and some of you could be overwhelmed with choices
Your career is certainly picking up pace. You are clearer about your goals and work matters are straightforward. Others are recognising your talents and abilities, so it’s a good time to get yourself noticed. Your drive to improve your finances is great this month. You are inclined to take chances on creative or romantic levels. Health issues, generally of a psychosomatic nature, may come to the fore.
AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY — 18 FEBRUARY
GEMINI 21 MAY — 20 JUNE
LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER — 23 OCTOBER
Career opportunities are likely to arise this month and quite possibly of the behind-the-scenes variety, or involving online endeavours. Energy for improving your skills and getting projects going runs extremely high this month, so take advantage. You may also attract unusual romances or romantic partners into your life during this cycle. You are likely to have more fun with this energy than you may have previously.
Your inner world is especially active and rich this month as you find much motivation to work behind the scenes or to work on projects in relative solitude. Your mood in love is mostly adventurous, and your charm is quite natural now. A more positive and forward-looking attitude wins you many admirers. Some of you may be introspective at this time, perhaps isolating yourself from worldly activities and acquaintances a little in some manner.
This is a period for personal review, when you could be reconsidering certain elements of your life and keeping more to yourself. Ideally, you get in touch with your heart’s desire after this review period. Financial concerns and mix-ups lift by midmonth, when a new budget will be helpful. Keeping your nose to the grindstone is a good idea now, although you tend to want to take the lead. Relationships are easygoing and satisfying.

Terror-Fi Film Festival Greener Grass A deliciously twisted comedy set in a demented, timeless suburbia where every adult wears braces on their straight teeth, couples coordinate meticulously pressed outfits, and coveted family members are swapped in more ways than one in this competition for acceptance. 139
Portrait Of A Lady On Fire Girlhood director Céline Sciamma returns with this beautifully calibrated, incandescent romance between a painter and her subject, which took home both Best Screenplay and the Queer Palm at this year’s Cannes. Brittany, France, 1760. Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young lady who has just left the convent. Héloïse is a reluctant bride to be and Marianne must paint her without her knowing. She observes her by day and secretly paints her at night. Intimacy and attraction grow between the two women as they share Héloïse’s first and last moments of freedom, all whilst Marianne paints the portrait that will end it all.
The Report The Report is a riveting thriller based on actual events. Idealistic staffer Daniel J. Jones (Adam Driver) is tasked by his boss Senator Dianne Feinstein (Annette Bening) to lead an investigation of the CIA’s Detention and Interrogation Program, which was created in the aftermath of 9/11. Jones’s relentless pursuit of the truth leads to explosive findings that uncover the lengths to which the nation’s top intelligence agency went to destroy evidence, subvert the law, and hide a brutal secret from the American public.

“I consider myself more a trainer of people than dogs!” says Hamish ‘The Dog Dude’ Young. “I teach people how to communicate with their dogs.” I meet with the legendary Waikato dog whisperer in his new Auckland base at South Paws Doggy Daycare, where he also works with canine rehabilitation and rehoming charity, Chained Dog. Nearby are is his personal pack of pooches, ranging from mastiffs to toy breeds and plenty in between. “All dogs,” he continues, “are born to instinctively follow.” Humans, he laughs, are the only species on the planet willing to follow a weak leader ("Or a stupid one!" I interject) but dogs simply won’t do that: “They don’t understand the complexity of our thought process, they just pick up on energies and body language. Dogs, says, Hamish, fall into three main energy groups: low, medium and high, and they generally want to hang out with dogs with matching characteristics. As for interactions with humans, it's important for people and their pooches to “get on the same wavelength”. One of the reasons so many people have issue with their pets is because puppies are taken away from their mums too soon.“This means that they miss out on the number one lesson mum teaches them, and that’s how to limit the excitement,” says Hamish. “When one of the puppies is playing and starts to take things a little too far then she’ll come and take them away to calm them down. They miss that.”
And so the problem is then further compounded by inexperienced dog owners who over-excite their new pups, leading to behavioural issues further down the road as they release energy destructively—whether it be through chewing or digging or even biting. (One of Hamish’s energy expending tricks is to pop them on a treadmill!) Other common mistakes include treating dogs like humans which drives them “completely insane”, and allowing them to lie on top of you which they interpret as being in a dominant role: “Your dog doesn’t relate to any of that. It comes back to that basic principle that every dog is born to follow.” Progress made by Hamish with the hounds can soon be undone if, upon their return home, the owners fall back into the same old routines: “The dog will always behave itself with me because, from day one, I’m consistent. But as soon as it goes back that environment, then it becomes unsettled.” That’s why it’s essential owners hang out with him too. “Too many owners think that they can just throw a load of money at the problem, drop the dog off, and be done,” laments Hamish. “Obviously I provide them with a blueprint for them to follow with their dog—and they have my support along the way—but they need to come and spend time with me and their dog so that they can mimic what I have done. It’s about empowering the human. A lot of the time people arrive in a state of anxiety, and so the first thing I do is address that. Usually when that happens there’s a change in the dog straight away.”

“I consider myself more a trainer of people than dogs!” says Hamish ‘The Dog Dude’ Young. “I teach people how to communicate with their dogs.”
Are all dogs trainable? “If anyone were to ever tell you I failed, I didn’t fail the dog, but failed to break through to the human because of ego and things like that. Eighty percent of the time, it’s not a dog related issue, but a human one, and it’s sending the dog crazy because no one’s relating to it.” Are some people just not equipped to own dogs? “Unfortunately, yes, I think some people shouldn’t have dogs. Part of the reason I’m so successful is because I’m honest—but there’s just no helping some people, and I’ve learnt to spot them!” Hamish’s impeccably behaved pack comprises several dogs that were simply deemed too risky to release back into the homes of incapable handlers. His canine crew also serves as his staff, helping to rehabilitate new hounds with behavioural problems. “Everyone thinks that they should choose the puppy that runs and jumps all over them, but they’ll likely be high energy, so I recommend getting the one that ignores you or stands to the back,” says Hamish. “And I also highly recommend going out and doing basic obedience stuff immediately—it’s important to teach dogs to stay and to sit and that sort of stuff. But they should also delve into dog psychology, how their brains works and what drives them.” Though Hamish grew up around dogs—he had a neighbour in Cambridge who bred and trained sheepdogs and “taught me everything I know”—becoming The Dog Dude was never his intention. He’s previously practised martial arts and worked as a chef, and it was while walking groups of dogs that people would stop to ask how managed to control them so well: “It happened so many times that I realised there was a real need for help out there.” However, for all his whispering wizardry, it’s sobering to hear that Hamish has, on occasion been bitten. “There’s only a certain amount you can learn in a classroom when it comes to behaviour—especially when dealing with extreme dogs,” he reveals. “You need hands-on experience, and at some point you’re going to get bitten, maybe quite badly, which puts a lot people off.” Such strikes are usually the result of “redirecting”, an instinctual redirection of energy should Hamish, say, get it between a pair of scrapping hounds. “My job is to limit that, to teach them how to release the energy constructively,” says Hamish. “So Jed for instance— that black kelpie over there—whenever he gets too excited, he’ll run over and jump on the treadmill then look at me to tell me to turn it on! It’s just so satisfying, helping these dogs, it’s a magical job.” Read More

Training Through the Ages • The domestic dog descended from a wolf species that became extinct between 15,000-40,000 years ago. The oldest agreed upon fossils of domestic dogs are 14,000 years old. Some believe other fossils more than twice as old to belong to domesticated dogs.
142
• Experts can’t agree on when or how humans first began domesticating the animal. The two most common theories are that early humans caught wolf pups which then became tame over time; or they gradually befriended wolves that visited villages for scraps. The truth probably rests somewhere in between—it’s likely the animals were domesticated more than once, in different parts of the world. Evolutionary anthropologist, Brain Hare, describes the domestication of dogs as “one of the most extraordinary events in human history”. • The bond between us and dogs is now so strong that experiments have shown that while wolves use trial and error to solve problems, pet pooches will instinctively look to a human for help when tested.
• Dog breeds began to be actively developed only 500 years ago, with most modern breeds no older than 150 years. Training as we know it today started to take shape around the turn of the 20th century. • In 1910, Konrad Most published Training Dogs: A Manual. He also established the German Research Society and Society for Animal Psychology, his punitive training methods were adopted by armies during the world wars, and so later found their way into wider society. • Corporal training fell out of fashion during the 1950s. Prominent proponents of the rewards-based approach included Marian and Bob Bailey who worked with the non-profit Canine Companions for Independence, while setting up positive reinforcement training schools around the world. • Karen Pryor’s tome Don’t Shoot the Dog was released in 1984, a pioneering publication that promoted punishment-free training. Paul Owens, the “original dog whisperer”, released his first book in 1999, with later works aimed at puppies including A Compassionate, Nonviolent Guide to Early Training and Care. The Dog Safe Workplace Dog bites…..is your company at risk?
Verve sits down with Joanna Clough, director of The Dog Safe Workplace and cofounder of Kids Safe With Dogs charitable trust. WHAT IS THE DOG SAFE WORKPLACE? We assist organisations that have workers who enter properties where dogs may be present. We educate them on how to recognise canine body language, how to avoid situations where they may get bitten and what to do if a situation occurs. Our programme is available as both face-to-face training and also in an online training package that is more cost-effective, allowing for companies with smaller staff in one location to still be able to get effective education and training for them. WHAT KIND OF ORGANISATIONS WOULD USE YOU? Currently we are working with companies such as Wells Instrument & Electrical, Statistics NZ, First Security and many others. Each of the organisations that we work with pride themselves on the care of their staff and understand their responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act (2015). There is still a bit of the good old Kiwi ‘she’ll be right’ attitude but times are changing and the consequences of not ensuring your staff has the right training for the right heath and safety risk can be very expensive.
WHY DID YOU START THE COMPANY? I have always been horrified by the number of dog bites that we hear about in New Zealand and in 2014 decided that there must be something we can do about the outdated education that is available for organisations. I commissioned a report from ACC with the number of bites annually from 2005 and consequently each year since then has shown an increase not only in numbers, but in cost. Just one of the challenges we have is that there is no mandatory dog bite reporting in NZ. If companies have private insurance the figures do not appear on ACC reports. For example, ACC reported 25 dog bites in 2017 for a particular industry; but we were given a report from one organisation in that category (as listed by ACC) that showed over 250 dog bites over that same period. We know from organisations that we have worked with for a few years that the introduction of our programme makes a difference—to know you are making a difference and saving people from bites as well as companies money, and dogs' lives, is very rewarding. The Strand Vet WO R D S — D R M E G AN AL D E R S O N | P H O T O G R AP H Y — J E F FAL O O
We love Audrey Hepburn, not because she was stylish, sophisticated or posh, but because she was a humanitarian who believed "nothing was impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'". From inception, The Strand Veterinarian ‘Lady Logo’ symbolised the changing face of the veterinary profession. A profession once stereotyped by James Harriot, our new look has evolved with over 80 percent of veterinary professional graduates being women. We multitask with family life, standing on resilient, determined legs, but see no harm in adding in a little classic Audrey-like charm, talent and elegance. We know the company of animals cannot be overrated in this tumultuous world, especially for the next generation, as we face the social and environmental challenges of today. Both the mental and physical benefits of living with an animal companion are irrefutable. As an example, a recent study by the American Heart Organisation concluded dog owners are blessed with a 24 percent reduced risk of dying
early and a 31 percent lower rate of death by heart attack or stroke compared to those living without a canine friend. Some of the best moments in my life, scratch that, all of the best moments in my life have been in the company of a dog (insert ‘cat’ here for cat fanciers). They protect, nurture and teach us lessons on compassion, helping us grow into the best person we can be. Pondering the common denominator for our success, on the anniversary of our 10-year-old veterinary service, we can boil it down to every person who helped build our business in our past, present and, no doubt, future, had, have or will have a heart beat at their feet. We dedicate our journey (which to be fair has been a hard and bumpy road with plenty of steep inclines to navigate) to all of you who have loved and lost your best friend, put yourself in to their paws, allowed us to treat them as our own, or helped us dream big as we learnt from you how to be the best community service we can be. Your aroha, the love we see between you every day, makes doing what we do a delight.

Pet Sharing with Pugs, Ponies and Parrots
146
What do pugs and ponies and parrots have in common? They can all be part of pet sharing through the website, Share My Pet. All pet owners love their pets and would happily do anything in their power to keep their furry (or scaley) charges happy. But what do you do as a pet owner when a holiday opportunity arises? If you have ever fancied a weekend away but obligations such as your pets make it impossible, pet sharing could be ideal for you. Introducing Share My Pet. New Zealand’s first pet sharing website. Launched early 2018, pet owners and animal lovers alike have been jumping on board to join the pet sharing community. Members are loving the relationships being formed between pets and people. As a pet owner it is a great option for extra pet care when life gets busy. Non pet owners that crave cuddle time with a pet can now get their animal fix and be a special part of a pet's life. A SOLUTION FOR PET OWNERS We all lead busy lives. Juggling work, family and the daily chores is something most people have in common. Pet ownership takes time, money and a lot of commitment. We want the best for our pets, and they deserve the best. This includes plenty of fresh air, exercise, companionship and care. Share My Pet gives pet owners the chance to connect to trustworthy animal lovers that would love to spend time with their pets and form a loving relationship with them. Joining the Share My Pet community means you know your pet is getting the attention and care it deserves when you are busy or away. This could be as simple
as a few extra walks a week for your canine buddy. Or arranging at-home holiday care for your cat who prefers the comforts of home sweet home. Rabbits, fish, chickens and even bearded dragons are all welcome to join. DON’T OWN A PET! GET YOUR FUR FIX AT SHARE MY PET It is not always possible to own your own pet. Many rental properties in NZ do not allow pets, while long working hours, frequent travel or being a student are factors that lead you to decide that now is not the right time to commit to pet ownership. If at present you cannot provide a pet with the best life it deserves, including time and company and the right amount of space it needs to be happy, then pet sharing offers you a solution. HOW PET SHARING WORKS The process is simple: decide if you are a Sharer (pet owner) or a Carer (person wishing to look after someone’s pet). Create a profile for yourself and/or your pet. Once your profile is live you can check out all the available pets and people in your community on the website. When you have found a pet or a person you would like to connect with there is an annual membership fee of $49.99. Once paid you can use the messenger system to contact other members to arrange a first date. You can message as many people as you want within your 12-month membership.

FIND YOUR PERFECT MATCH Via the built-in messenger system pet owners and animal lovers can chat and get to learn a bit more about each other. If both parties like the sound of each other it's time to arrange a real date. At no point is any personal information such as home address or phone number visible to the other person. All your data is keep safe and confidential. Pet Sharing is about connecting pet owners with animal lovers so Kiwi pets benefit from extra love and attention. Members can learn all about pet care and form a special connection with an animal regardless of their living and work situations. Pets, people, love. It really can be that simple.
We also have four chickens who live a lovely life, freeranging under the trees in our garden. We founded Share My Pet at the end of 2017 after speaking to lots of people when walking our dogs who love animals but can’t or don’t have one but would love to take care of one. We realised that there are a lot of good people out there who love animals but, for whatever reasons, do not own a pet – but would love to share the care of an animal and have the joy of an animal’s companionship.
WHO WE ARE AND WHY WE SET UP SHARE MY PET
We saw the same need in pet owners who occasionally wish they had someone else they knew and trusted in their lives to help out with looking after their beloved pets—whether it be when they went on holidays, wanted their pet to have extra companionship or just wanted to make their pets happy by allowing them more love from animal lovers.
Our names are Lili and Dave. We have four much-loved members of our lovely fur family: Elfie our cat, Snout and Muppet our two dogs, and Gem the mini pony.
We believe Share My Pet is a win-win situation for pet owners and animal lovers alike. For more information please visit sharemypet.co.nz.

In the box SEAT SEAT Tarraco review WO R D S — DAV E M C L E O D
Globally, ‘Euro’ SUVs are forging ahead in the desirability charts, while closer to home, New Zealand is positioned well ahead of the curve in both overall SUV ownership and those younger (sub-40year olds) that buy them. It’s these three facts that when combined, really put SEAT and their new SUV into the box seat. It's safe to say that for quite a while now, Spanish carmaker SEAT has been really turning heads. They have good looking vehicles that offer European desirability and class, yet come shrouded in youthful vibrancy. Now they've added another SUV seat to their table (well, seven in fact) and it’s called the Tarraco. Referencing the ancient name of Tarragona (a town located in northeast España) and coming from a brand that’s synonymous with the country itself, the SEAT Tarraco is undoubtedly Spanish; however, its finger-snapping, toe-tapping Flamenco roots don’t stop there. The SEAT Tarraco offers two spritely beating hearts, a 1.4L 110kW and a 2L 140kW, both TSIs (petrol-only here baby), and a total of three model variants: Style, Xcellence and Xcellence 4Drive. I spent the majority of my time in the latter, so that’s what I’ll stick with. Although aimed at the medium-sized SUV market, at a shade over 4.7m long and nearly 1.7m tall the Tarraco isn’t exactly what you’d call medium. However, its narrow shield-like grille and recessed angry-bull LED headlights and DRLs seem to proportion the vehicle well. Its profile is bold and artistically designed, thankfully not by Dali, and it sits well on very bright 19-inch shoes. The rear tailgate is electric and ‘kick opening’ for ease of use, allowing access to 1,775L of ‘seat down’ luggage space. The interior is progressive and well-connected. Its upbeat attitude and modern styling are easy on the eye and very easy to get along with. The eight-inch infotainment is touchscreen and very interactive, smart-phone connection is simple and quick with a raft of apps, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink, navigation and cool sounds that can be made cooler still with a Beats upgrade. The 10.25-inch instrument cluster (the dials behind the steering wheel) is completely digital and comes with ‘virtually’ (see what I did there) endless options to suit you, the driver. From traditional dials to a more sportier look, full-on maps or a minimalistic ‘just the facts’ numbers, your car, your rules.
The seats are funky breathable fabric framed in soft Alcantara, they're electrically adjustable and heated of course. The second row of seats are spacious and the outside two are heated, while the bonus of the two pop-ups in the rear offer around town flexibility, but I’d say were a little bit cramped for bigger people on longer runs (maybe fine for yoga enthusiasts?). I took to the mean streets of Auckland’s North Shore and put it to the test of both family chores, including Saturday football, followed by some exploratory longer-runs, aka daddy wants some alone time. The Tarraco’s interior space ensured all family members and gear travelled to the game with room to spare and the pop-up tray tables on the rear of the front seats were used to draw last-minute tactics on. The heated seats helped save time on warm-ups and keyless entry and push-button start-stop ensured my hands remained warm in my pockets until really required. In comfort mode, the Tarraco goes down as smooth as an ice-cold Sangria on a blisteringly hot summer’s day and when the drive mode dial is turned to Sport, just as fast. Nought to one hundred comes in at around eight seconds but in this stylish SUV it somehow seems quicker. It dances well on the road and hugs long corners with more confidence than this driver. My 4Xcellence 4Drive also had three other drive modes up its sleeve to play with too: Eco, which will apparently have the SEAT sipping fuel at a mere 7.1L/100km and emit its sweet fragrant gasses at a rate of 166g/km. Individual, where, just like the instrument cluster, you get to chose things like steering and acceleration. Off-road, for when you intentionally want to get off the tarmac, and Snow/Ice mode, for when you intentionally want to stay on the tarmac. Should things go wrong, the Terraco’s got your best interests in mind: 5-Star Euro NCAP, ASR, ABS, ESC, XDS, Emergency brakes, pre-crash seatbelt tensioners, roll-over protection and more bags than those seen hanging under my eyes. Spain has produced a whole raft of fine, world-leading specialities. From eye-catching images from Dali, tapas and paella, to Flamenco and even the dance tunes of Ibiza, however, now they have something else to add to the list: the Tarraco. A happy and stylish seven-seater SUV that has the looks and adventurous spirit that will continue to enchant their young in body and mind audience.

Aston Martin Vantage Review
IT ALL BEGINS WITH SPORT
Although when asked if I’d like to review the all-new Aston Martin Vantage my inner voice yelled rhetorical statements such as, "do bears take their morning constitution in the forest?" and "is the Pope Catholic?" but my actual response was a very British: “Yesh please.” I happened to be in the Aston Martin HQ in England when they gave me a sneak preview of the new Vantage. It was a cloak and dagger affair with no photos allowed and me being sworn to Her Majesty’s secrecy. I obviously felt both privileged and special, but not as special as actually finding myself behind the wheel of this sporty coupe in New Zealand! The Vantage name was first introduced to the Aston Martin marque in the 1950s and in particular to the DB2. It signified a model performance upgrade, a hotter version of their already impressive vehicles. In fact, it wasn’t until 1972 that Vantage became a stand-alone nameplate with the AM Vantage and five years later, the V8 Vantage was produced. Heralded as Britain’s first supercar, it boasted a top-speed of 270km/h, 291kW, 550Nm of torque and a 0-60mph time of 5.3 seconds. For Aston Martin, Vantage meant sport and it meant performance and its success at racing events, particularly endurance, has over the years, helped form the AM brand’s core DNA. The all-new Aston Martin Vantage takes all of the brand’s sportscar history and racing pedigree into propels it into a whole new era. First and foremost comes the design. The new Vantage has a predatory look, particularly around the sharkinspired nose. There's the trademark Aston grille, sleek yet menacing LED headlights and a clamshell-style bonnet. It’s more aerodynamic than ever (body and
undercarriage), with a front splitter providing downforce for performance and directing cool air to the brakes and twin-turbos. Its profile is pure and uncluttered with excess badging or unnecessary fittings and boasts a confident falling shoulder line joining front to rear. The rear arches are wide and athletic and the tail end boasts a tailgate ‘flip’ for additional downforce, full-width taillights, a rear diffuser and quad-exhausts that let the glorious sound of the 4L, twin-turbo V8 sing out for all to hear. Access to the Vantage cabin comes via body recessed door handles and ‘swan’ door opening. They raise as they open allowing impressive entry space. Once inside, you are surrounded by Aston Martin’s modern sportscar luxury and a suite of advanced technology that aids your driving pleasure. You sit low inside, a trait enjoyed by many sportscars, but visibility is good and everything you need is almost fingertip close. The seats are embracing and totally configurable to suit and hug your frame. The centre console provides push-button start, drive selection and access to the eight-inch LCD infotainment screen (in a familiar German brand way). Features such as 360-degree reverse camera, navigation, audio, phone connectivity, are all easy to access and clearly displayed. The instrument cluster is digital and can be configured to suit and the entire cabin comes with tactile switches and dials and a very exclusive feel. Igniting the Vantage’s 4L V8 ‘undercover’ at Aston Martin Auckland’s garage is a spine-tingling affair. It’s loud and powerful and epic. It’s a sense of achievement at the push of a button. Push 'D' for drive, let off the accelerator and you’re away. The steering is light and car is easy to manoeuvre even in tight spaces, thanks to sensors and cameras, they keep you ad the Vantage safe

A Gloomy Outlook
I sit here at my desk looking outside at the gloomy weather, with cold winds and sudden showers. Where is the sunshine? Not only is there gloomy weather, but there is gloom in the rental market too. Not much is happening. I wrote about how slow things were last month and here we go again. Nothing has changed. Properties are slow to rent and Trade Me enquiries are down. Yes, we take prospective tenants to view properties. Week after week, they either do not apply or the ones that do apply will change their mind after you have done all the checks and written up the agreement.
without being neurotic. There is no Comfort mode, just Sport, Sport + and Track, and since I was leaving the city, I started in Sport. All very civil. Over the harbour bridge, a few more revs were introduced and the soundtrack increased, but the V8 kept its deep baritone note, it felt warm and comforting. I was in no hurry, just enjoying the firm yet comfortable ride. Free of watchful eyes, I changed up the pace a little, pushing the drive mode button on the leather-clad sports wheel to Sports +. Immediately many things happen behind the scenes (to do with steering and throttle response and suspension), but all I needed to know was the revs increased and so did the fun. The bonded aluminium chassis feels stoic in the corners and AM Dynamic Torque Vectoring System lets you corner like a champ. You feel like a racing driver and the eight-speed, rear-mounted ZF gearbox selects the perfect gear time after time after time, it’s an absolute thrill. Finding an appropriate venue, I engaged Track mode, time to unleash the sound, gearshift and aggression of all 503 horses and 685Nm. It takes a mere 3.5 seconds from 0-100km/h, the roar resonates around the cabin, it’s addictive. Just as a footnote here, the ZF is great, but I also enjoyed using the paddles for (seemingly) more control. It’s easy to be overwhelmed with the Vantage, certainly initially as the V8 roars into life, but once you get moving you find out how friendly it is to get along with. "It all starts with sport" I was told when I picked it up and although it was a comment meant as a reference to the drive modes, it could just as well have summed up the entire Vantage experience. It’s a thrill ride yet a grand tourer. It’s modern yet vicious. It’s prestigious yet sporty. Above all, it’s a new iconic Aston Martin Vantage.
We have lowered rent and put new photos on Trade Me but, as I have said before, there is no sense of urgency. Our properties are well-presented and in good areas but we are struggling with some of them. We are renting of course, but they are certainly taking longer that they should do. Of course, school holidays and the long weekend coming up do not help. Also, the wintry weather is keeping people away. Maybe when the sun decides to shine and the weather is warmer, we shall see some movement. Just Rentals is always busy in the office with new regulations, keeping our landlords up to date, getting letters out for the three-monthly inspections, organising tradespeople for maintenance jobs, answering emails, sorting out tenants' problems, chasing up arrears, sending out water bills, and more. Yes, there is a lot more involved than just renting the properties. Of course, renting properties is our top priority. We are having a good turnout this Saturday. We have a few properties to show and the viewing tracker informs us that there are many people interested and lots of bookings to go through. Hope the sun shines! ROLL ON SUMMER! BUSINESS / EDUCATION & SOCIETY
PAUL GO LD SM IT H
Police Minister has let down New Zealanders Now more than ever the government should be focused on ensuring there are enough police officers to stop criminals offending. In Newmarket alone, we are seeing an increase in retailers being targeted by shoplifters. This government has overseen a rapid increase in the number of people joining gangs since it took office, but it’s no closer to achieving its promise of 1,800 extra police on the beat. In fact, it’s given up entirely. The prime minister promised New Zealanders her government would deliver 1,800 additional police officers to the force. That is additional recruitment, accounting for police officers who leave each year. The government has been clear on this promise. With gang membership on the rise and serious crime increasing, having these extra cops in our community is incredibly important. But after two years, the government has only managed to add 716. There’s no way it can somehow add a further 1,000 cops in less than a year.

So this week, the government shifted the goal posts. Now Stuart Nash is simply counting every person who has been through the police college and ignoring the many hundreds of experienced police officers who have resigned over the past two years. The problem comes down to the government, it doesn’t have a plan when it comes to law and order. In fact, the only policy it does have is to reduce the number of people in prisons, but it has no plan to reduce crime first. This government is failing the New Zealanders who want safer communities, but also the police who have been planning for these additional resources. When the minister claims his government is ‘winning’ when it comes to reducing crime and cracking down on gangs, that’s a slap in the face to the Kiwis who can see more gang members in their communities, but not enough police on the streets to stop criminals offending. It’s not fair on Kiwis. They deserve delivery from their government. National has always been the party of law and order. We’re currently undertaking the largest policy development process by an opposition ever.
