A typical client testimonial

He alleviated a lot of our stress which is involved in house buying and selling by being optimistic with the process and continued to reassure us when we needed it. I would not hesitate recommending Corvin to anyone, as he went above and beyond what we expected of a real estate agent and will definitely use him again.

Well, unbelievably it’s the holiday season – tis the time to be jolly!

A lot of us will be cooking up a storm in our kitchens, making food for family and friends, but there will also be many who cannot afford to put food on the table or buy presents for their children. I’d love for one of those families to contact me and let me send them a box of goodies.

Email jude@vervemagazine.co.nz and I will make sure the box is full of special treats for you and your family.

Wishing you all the very best for the holiday season, and please enjoy our beautiful December/January issue.

Much love, Jude xxxx

Fran

It’s been quite a yeardle!

What started out as a year filled with post-covid hope quickly unravelled into something that resembles where we are now: no-resolution COP 27; war and tragedy in Ukraine; heaving financial markets; the list goes on.

It’s a world where a virtual Santa can literally circumnavigate the globe in one night, making something that puzzled the heck out of me as a child, easier to understand. A world in which Siri and Alexa quickly learn our habits and remind us when to go to bed, how to stay healthy, and when to take a break.

But for all its oddities, synchronicities, anxious moments, and highs and lows, I love life, and am abundantly grateful for the experiences it provides daily. So, thank you. Thank you to all who give my life meaning, depth and colour. Clients, colleagues, friends and family, you’re simply the best.

Happy holidays to you all.

Fran xx

Danielle

It's my favourite time of year, filled with beautiful beaches, summer fashion, fresh recipes, and outdoor nights by the fire with loved ones. Naturally I look back on 2022 and recognise all the highs and lows.

This year had many highs, including travelling overseas to visit old friends in the US, as well as embracing local travel with my partner for a mid-winter road trip from Auckland to Wānaka.

Verve has also given me an exciting new perspective for the end of the year as I’m new to the team, and am looking forward to working on more issues!

The night before our wonderful Verve Christmas lunch and photoshoot over on Waiheke Island, I carefully packed myself a little bag of snacks to share with the Verve team throughout the day. Just a few little yummy treats, some fruit, chocolate and bliss balls. I left home very early the next morning, still waking up on my way to yoga and grabbed the bag from the pantry on my way out the door. Then when I got to the Britomart ferry terminal I opened the boot of my car to discover in my half-asleep state I had grabbed a bag of onions instead!

Anyway, we had an incredible day and it reminded me how very grateful I am to be part of this team of positive, warm-hearted people. Wishing all of our readers and advertisers a beautiful holiday season x

Pam

The ol' saying ‘the older we get, the faster it goes’ reminds me to make the most of each day! I’m looking forward to a wellearned break, spending time with family and friends, and sharing great food and loads of laughter.

It goes without saying that I’m super grateful to be part of the wonderful Verve team who are such a delight to work with and full of inspiration. It’s such a beautiful magazine and the feedback from clients is always that each issue is more stunning.

A huge thanks to our clients and readers for their ongoing support, and best wishes for a wonderful Christmas and new year. We all deserve it.

xx

The year has flown by and without any major snags for me for which I am grateful!

Time now to look forward to a great summer holiday season and reflect on the year that was.

Wishing all our readers a happy and healthy Christmas, plus special thoughts to our hardworking dedicated team who 'get it done' every month.

My Christmas promises to be one of sobriety (more or less) and sleepless nights with the birth of my son due in early December (he thankfully held off until after print day). Usually, I’d have a serious dose of FOMO knowing others are partying more than me, but I wouldn’t swap my Christmas this Christmas for the world.

Merry Christmas everyone, and all the best for 2023.

Yamin

It’s my third year at Verve and I can’t really believe how much my life has changed.

Experiencing living with my friends and not seeing my family everyday has had its ups and downs, but most of all it’s made me appreciate everyone in my life that’s helped me get to where I am. Looking forward to some sunshine and spending time with people I love, bye bye 2022!

It’s the time of year when I reflect back on the year that’s been, and am grateful that things have got back to ‘normal’. It’s been an awesome year working with the team to bring Verve to you, I look forward eagerly to my copy hot off the press each month, as I hope you do too!

Hope you have a fabulous Christmas and a fantastic summer break.

Peugeot Purrs…

Verve falls for the all-new Peugeot 308.

What did we like about the Peugeot 308? We loved the look of it, the design, and the fresh new colour. It looks solid, feels solid and drives so well, even timid drivers will feel confident on all surfaces in any conditions. And it's a real standout on the road.

Then there’s the comfort: sitting in the driver’s seat feels akin to sitting in a pleasant hug: snug, safe, and secure. The passenger seats are the same.

The onboard computer is amazing and can do almost anything – except drive the car. Intuitive and easy to use, little instruction was needed to get to grips with its functionality and it rapidly became our on-road best friend.

The run to Mawhiti from the Waiheke Ferry was quick and easy, with no concerns about room for all our bags and bits and pieces as the boot is sufficiently roomy (good for several suitcases). But one of the features we loved most was the sunroof – so good during these fairweather days of summer.

Easy to drive, responsive, and a classy ride, the Peugeot 308 simply charmed us.

The Neutral Nursery

Designing the nursery is one of the most exciting parts of prepping for baby’s arrival – and these days many mums and dads are no longer going for the traditional pink and blue shades, instead opting for clean and modern neutrals.

Whites, earthy and neutral tones fit in well with the minimalist look many homes favour, with the subdued colours easier to mix and match, and a big plus is that they’re gender neutral.

“I think whites and creams give her an opportunity to discover her own self and not have the mentality that because she’s a girl, she needs all pink,” says mum Janice, about her two-year-old daughter.

Rebecca, a 32-year-old hairdresser, is giving birth to a baby boy early December. The room waiting for him at home is neither blue nor pink, but beige. It has a light-coloured wood crib, a woven jute rug, a latté-hued changing pad, and a cream ottoman, with oatmeal throw pillows and camel muslin blankets strewn about.

The Barthow family recently renovated a three-bedroom 1960s home, which included repainting the entire interior with Resene Sea Fog on the walls, and Resene Half Sea Fog on the ceilings and trims. They found the crispness of the whites helped to turn a tired 1960s interior, which was covered in the original wallpaper, into a fresher and more contemporary space. It also created a perfect versatile backdrop for the nursery as they didn’t know whether they were having a boy or girl, offset by pops of colour through the rug and linen, as well as the warm tones in the timber furnishings.

They’re so happy with how it turned out and have since had their wee girl who absolutely loves her room too!

Mountain Retreat

A bold, sculptural holiday home on the slopes of the Steenberg Mountains in Cape Town is designed to frame a transformative experience of place.

WORDS GRAHAM WOOD PHOTOGRAPHS GREG COX

The main living, dining and kitchen area is housed in a pavilion-like structure with a heavy concrete canopy.

Home & Design 26

On approach, the house appears as a series of blocks and pavilions emerging from the landscape. Despite the solidity of certain parts of the house, there are other parts where it is possible to see through from one side to the other.

The pool terrace is sheltered on three sides from the prevailing winds to create an outdoor living area alongside

the swimming pool. The granite slabs here extend the finish of the indoor areas all the way to the end of the outdoor space, creating a sense of continuity. The stone perfectly matches the tone and colour of the concrete roof and the lime-plaster finish on the brick walls, creating the impression that the house is a single, unified object, made from the same material.

27 December / January

The living room is a light-filled pavilion that connects quite directly with the mountainside behind it. The homeowner is a vintage designer furniture dealer, so, while the furnishings are relatively sparse, they are carefully chosen and curated.

Reverse-tapered concrete columns are another bespoke detail – a loose reference to ancient columns of the ruins of Knossos in Crete, which, while executed in a modern manner, evoke the mystery of these ancient buildings.

Get the look with Resene Resene Half Grey Chateau Resene Heartbreaker Resene Southern Cross Home & Design 28

The exterior of the house behind the living room includes an angular aperture in the wall, which frames a view and, in its unconventional execution, slightly shifts your awareness and consciousness in the act of looking. Here, the lime-finished brickwork of the wall is apparent. Its colour and tone match the concrete, but it appears almost as a new material.

Seen from the far end of the lounge area, looking back towards the kitchen, it is possible to see a drop in the soffit just before the kitchen where the canopy above the terrace and living area intersects with the third part of the house, which houses the main bedroom. You can also see how the quality of light changes with the transition, from bright and airy in the living room to slightly more subdued in the kitchen.

Home & Design 30
Home & Design 32

The chocolatey oak-finished kitchen has a luxurious but unimposing presence in the living pavilion. Around the vintage 70s dining table is a set of Arcadia Dining Chairs by Paolo Piva for B&B Italia. The bar stools at the kitchen counter are designed by Hermann Becker for Google Germany, and the pendant light above the dining table is a large Aplomb Suspension Lamp for Foscarini.

From the exterior, in another instance of bespoke window detailing, the living-room window ‘steps down’ on the outside of the floor slab so that the frame is invisible, offering an unmediated connection with the garden and landscape beyond.

Get the look with Resene Resene Woodsman Cedar Resene Martini Resene Sea Fog
33 December / January

The upstairs main bedroom is simply but luxuriously furnished with a bespoke bed unit in oak to match the kitchen units. The timber finishes are consistent throughout the house.

The stripped down minimalism of the main en-suite bathroom is designed to bring a meditative dimension to the experience of bathing and cleansing. Rather than a freestanding bath, the architect designed a floor-level “receptacle for water”, perhaps referencing ancient bath-houses and the ritualistic aspect of cleansing, once again concentrating on the experience of the bath, and not just the thing itself.

The effect of the specially designed window frame is most apparent here. It all but vanishes, making for a powerfully unmediated experience of the views. The plinth alongside the bath and the basin are bespoke designs for which the architect sourced a local sandstone that matched the granite of the floors, the lime-washed walls and concrete. The shower has a splashback made from a slab of the same sandstone.

An Inspirational Impact

62

Inspired by the incredible artisans, unique natural materials, and passion for community-led projects, co-founder Eve Penny wanted Asili to be a vehicle for supporting those local creatives, encouraging their distinctive work to blossom on an international scale.

Asili understands the process and labour that goes into each design production and remains focused on delivering fair trade and community-led initiatives by working with local producers and natural materials.

“We have a fair trade production partner on the ground in Kenya who ensures all production meets the WFTO (World Fair Trade Organization) standards and this partnership is what drives Asili,” says Eve.

Asili’s main focus when working with their makers is to develop local enterprises while ensuring consistent production, innovative collaborations, and support for fair trade practices. The groups they work closely with are located across Uganda and Kenya where each one specialises in their own handcrafted materials.

With access to a wide range of materials across these countries, Asili offers the opportunity for brands to work with these amazing artisans and their ethnically sourced textiles like stone, Ankole cattle horn, and East African wood. Brands can decide between crating their own custom range with the design team or order from Asili’s collection. A portion of

every order will go into the Asili Foundation for communityled initiatives. Brands and customers have the option to track their impact via details from Asili.

“This was a huge focus for our trip to Kenya earlier this month, listening to the artisans and their community leaders about their needs and projects that need supporting,” says Eve. “They have established some great community-led initiatives that we’re very proud to support.”

Working with African communities and supporting the livelihoods of local artisans has been the most rewarding aspect for Eve – in 2021, they contributed to the income of more than 30 families across East Africa. As well as the excitement of working with new materials people may not have heard of before, Eve emphasises the amazing connectivity that Asili offers brands, artisans, and customers.

Many exciting projects are in the pipeline for the team at Asili, including developing a custom range collection for a new brand in Australia and a collaboration with a London-based designer. Alongside these new connections, Asili strives to continue their inspiring community work and support for East African artisans while building an international stage for new materials and intriguing architecture. Asili truly is making a difference.

Horopito Roast Lamb with Orange & Mint Sauce

Serves: 8

To me, a roast lamb is the epitome of a family roast dinner. Sunday dinners at my parents’ and grandparents’ meant the aroma of a roast lamb or hogget, which always came with rich gravy made from the pan drippings. There was nothing quite like the succulent, tasty roast vegetables that were cooked in with the lamb, either. Heaven forbid if there was ever a pale roast potato!

Here I’ve created a very simple orange and mint sauce to accompany the lamb, and the flavour is out of this world. It’s the perfect accompaniment, and so incredibly easy to make using homemade or store-bought marmalade.

Ingredients

2kg leg of lamb

1 bulb garlic, plus 4 cloves

1 tsp dried horopito, or 4 sprigs fresh rosemary zest of 1 orange

2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

1 tsp salt

1 tsp cracked black pepper vegetables, to roast with the lamb

For the orange and mint sauce

1/2 cup orange marmalade

2 tbsp chopped fresh mint 2 tbsp white wine vinegar finely grated zest of 1 orange 1/2 tsp cracked black pepper water to thin, if necessary

Kai: Food stories and recipes from my family table, by Christall Lowe, photography by Christall Lowe, published by Bateman Books, RRP $59.99. Available now.

Method

Remove the lamb from the fridge one hour before cooking, to allow it to come up to room temperature.

Heat the oven to 180˚C.

Slice the whole bulb of garlic in half, crossways, and peel the other 4 cloves. Roughly chop half of the rosemary leaves, if using.

Crush the peeled garlic, and place in a bowl with the dried horopito or chopped rosemary, orange zest and olive oil, then mix together.

Season the lamb with sea salt and pepper, then rub the marinade all over the meat.

Place lamb in a large roasting pan along with the halved garlic bulbs, and any prepared vegetables that you’d like to roast at the same time. Add the remaining rosemary sprigs, and drizzle over a good glug of olive oil.

Cook the lamb for 1 hour 20 minutes if you like it rarer and pink, or 2 hours if you prefer it more well done.

General cooking times for roasting a leg of lamb are (per 500g): · R are 20–25 minutes

Medium 25–30 minutes Well done 30–35 minutes

W hen the lamb is cooked to your liking, remove from the oven and leave to rest for around 15 minutes before carving.

While the lamb is cooking you can make the orange and mint sauce. Mix all of the sauce ingredients in a medium bowl until well combined.

Serve the lamb with roast vegetables, orange and mint sauce, and some seasonal greens.

Chilli Coconut Mussels

Serves: 2-3

I love the flavour of mussels, especially when steamed to perfection with some simple ingredients. The beautiful thing about mussels is that they are quick to cook, and it’s easy to know when they’re done — their shells open up. Use the empty

shell to scoop up the delicious coconut chilli broth that is so sublimely mussel flavoured, and dunk some warm crusty bread in the broth if you want. This is a meal to eat with your hands. Feel free to get slurpy and enjoy the flavour sensation.

Ingredients

12 green-lipped mussels, rinsed and cleaned

3 tbsp butter or olive oil

1 onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, finely sliced

1 tsp chilli flakes

zest and juice of 1 lime or lemon

1/2 cup white wine

1/4 cup water

1 can (400ml) coconut milk

small bunch fresh coriander, roughly chopped or torn

Method

Rinse and clean the mussels, removing any excess ‘beard’ and barnacles. Discard any that have broken shells or have open shells that don’t close back up when tapped firmly.

Melt the butter in a large, deep saucepan or stockpot over a medium heat, and add the onion, garlic and chilli flakes. Cook until soft, but not brown.

Add the lime or lemon zest and juice, wine and water, stir, and bring to a simmer.

When simmering, add the whole mussels still in their shells, and pop a lid on the saucepan. This will steam the mussels gently until their shells open, which should take 4–6 minutes.

Once mussels have opened, remove and discard any that are still clamped shut. Pour the can of coconut milk over the mussels. Stir to combine and heat through. Sprinkle over the chopped coriander.

Serve in large bowls, with warm crusty bread.

Pāua & Venison Meatballs with Rosemary Syrup

Makes: 30

Okay, this is going to blow your mind; I can’t even begin to explain how amazing this flavour pairing is. The gaminess of the venison is well balanced with the saltiness of the pāua, and then the sweetness of the rosemary syrup just takes it to a new height. I once tried something similar at a local restaurant, but with a juniper berry syrup. I discovered that rosemary worked

just as well for the flavour profile I was looking for — fresh, pine-like and slightly spicy. And you can grow it in your own back yard (or even in a pot on the kitchen bench). What’s more, you can use the rosemary syrup to make a refreshing rosemary lemonade — delicious!

Ingredients

For the rosemary syrup

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup water

small bunch of rosemary, chopped coarsely 1/2 tbsp whole black peppercorns

For the meatballs

2 pāua shelled, cleaned and minced (about 250–300g flesh) 400g venison mince 1 small onion, finely diced 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp ground black pepper 1 egg oil for cooking

Kai: Food stories and recipes from my family table, by Christall Lowe, photography by Christall Lowe, published by Bateman Books, RRP $59.99. Available now.

Method

Make the rosemary syrup first, and leave it to steep while cooking the meatballs. Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan over a medium heat. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves.

Remove from heat and let the syrup steep for about 30 minutes. When ready, pour syrup through a strainer into a small jug or jar to remove rosemary leaves and peppercorns. This can be stored in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to a month.

For the meatballs, mix pāua, venison, onion, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper and egg in a medium bowl until well combined.

Using your hands, squeeze small balls of mixture together firmly, so they’re about the size of golf balls.

Heat enough oil to cover the surface of a skillet or frying pan over a medium to high heat. When the oil is shimmering, work in batches to add the meatballs and cook on all sides until nicely browned all over, and cooked through. This should take 8–10 minutes per batch. Add more oil if necessary between batches.

Remove from heat and serve drizzled with rosemary syrup.

Cook’s notes

You can also use this mixture to make pāua and venison burger patties. Use the same recipe as given for the meatballs, only shape the mixture into 8 burger patties).

To use the rosemary syrup to make a refreshing rosemary lemonade, fill a glass with ice, add 2 tablespoons of rosemary syrup and squeeze half a lemon into it. Pour over soda or tonic water, stir, and enjoy!

Honey-Roasted Yams with Feta Whip

Serves: 4 as a side

Yams were a staple in our whānau growing up. These weirdlooking morsels with crevices that we’d have to scrub the dirt out of have a flavour that I still can’t quite put my finger on. My grandad would grow them year after year, and we would always roast them, the delicious flesh bursting out of the skin when you bit into one.

Here I’ve added another dimension to the flavour profile by roasting them in honey and balsamic vinegar. The sweet with the sour is a beautiful thing, and with the feta whip it is absolutely moreish. You can also cook other sweet root vegetables such as kūmara, carrot and parsnip in the same way.

Ingredients

For the rosemary syrup

500g yams

2 tbsp oil

2 tbsp runny honey (or pure maple syrup) 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar extra 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar and 1 tbsp honey or pure maple syrup for drizzle handful of chopped parsley to garnish

For the feta whip

200g feta cheese, crumbled 1 cup (250g) cream cheese, softened, or Greek yoghurt 2 tbsp lemon juice 1 tbsp lemon zest

Method

Heat the oven to 200˚C.

Place yams in a bowl with oil, honey and balsamic vinegar. Toss to coat the yams and spread into a large roasting dish or baking tray with sides in a single layer.

Roast for 30–40 minutes until golden brown all over, turning twice during cooking. Remove from the roasting dish and spoon any leftover marinade into a small bowl.

While the yams are cooking, make the feta whip. Put feta cheese, cream cheese, lemon juice and zest into a medium bowl. Blend together with an electric beater until smooth and creamy. Alternatively, place the ingredients into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.

Mix the extra tablespoons of balsamic vinegar and honey with the marinade reserved from the roasting dish, to create a drizzle.

Serve the yams either with, or over, the feta whip, drizzled with the marinade and sprinkled with chopped parsley.

Pavlova

Makes: 1 large, luscious pavlova

I’m all for getting my family to enjoy seasonal, nutritious produce — naturally full of all the good stuff — and kūmara is an all-round favourite for this. I prefer the purple-skinned (yellow flesh) kūmara; I just like the way it roasts. The orange

kumara is also good — it’s softer, and so will roast differently — but either one is great for this dish. I’ve called these kūmara ‘tosti’ — a cross between a kūmara toast and a rosti, but with very minimal effort required.

Ingredients

6 egg whites

1/2 tsp cream of tartar

11/2 cups caster sugar

2 tsp cornflour

1 tsp vinegar

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Kai: Food stories and recipes from my family table, by Christall Lowe, photography by Christall Lowe, published by Bateman Books, RRP $59.99. Available now.

Method

Set oven rack below the centre of the oven, and preheat oven to 140˚C. Grease a large baking tray and lay a piece of baking paper on top.

Using an electric beater or stand mixer with the whisk attachment, beat the egg whites and cream of tartar in a large metal bowl until stiff.

Beat in the caster sugar, adding 1 tablespoon at a time every 20 seconds, and continue whisking until it’s well incorporated and the sugar has dissolved (rub a little of the mixture between the tips of your fingers: if it no longer feels gritty, it’s done).

Add the remaining ingredients while beating slowly. Beat for another 30 seconds.

Spoon the pavlova mixture into the centre of the baking tray and, using a palette knife or spatula, shape the pavlova into an even circular shape. Make some upward sweeps all along the sides of the pavlova to help give it structure as it cooks, but be careful not to play with the mixture too much or it’ll lose some of its oomph. I tend to pile my pavlova mixture up high and flatten it at the top, rather than have it spread out too much. The pavlova will spread out quite a bit as it cooks anyway.

Place the pavlova in the oven and immediately turn the oven down to 100˚C.

Bake the pavlova for 2 hours (resist the urge to ever open the oven door), then turn oven off and leave it to cool without opening the door for at least 2 more hours. The pavlova will likely crack in places as it sinks — that is completely normal.

Cream and fruit covers a multitude of imperfections! Once it has completely cooled and just before you’re ready to serve, decorate the pavlova with fresh whipped cream and seasonal fruit.

Note: You can keep your pavlova for 2 days in an airtight container before adding the cream.

Cream-Filled Donuts with Fruit Compote

Makes: 16 large or 30 mini donuts

Buying school lunches in the 80s was a real treat. Mum would ring up in the morning and order a pie, donut and a drink. We’d rock on up to the school assembly hall at lunchtime and wait for our names to be read out, clutch our brown paper bags and hope like anything that we didn’t have to share. A cream donut back then only came with mock cream and a spoonful of jam, but it was enough to make me love them for life. This recipe

requires a bit of kneading (or you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook). I find the process of kneading soothing: seeing and feeling a lump of dough become silky, smooth and billowy is magic.

You can experiment with fillings; I have listed some of my favourites below.

Ingredients

1 sachet (8g) instant yeast, or 2 tbsp active yeast

1 1/2 cups warm milk

4 cups flour (preferably high grade), plus extra 1/4 cup for kneading

1/4 cup white sugar

50g butter, melted 1 egg, whisked canola or other neutral oil for frying (about 3 cups)

1/2 cup white sugar or icing sugar for dusting

1 tsp ground cinnamon (if using white sugar for dusting) fresh whipped cream, to serve

For the ‘any fruit’ compote 125g (1 cup) fresh or frozen berries, or other chopped up fruit of choice

2 tbsp lemon juice

3/4 cup water (more or less, depending on juiciness of fruit)

2 tbsp caster sugar or honey (depending on sweetness of fruit; optional)

1 tsp cornflour mixed in 1/4 cup cold water, if compote needs thickening

Method

If using active yeast, combine with warm milk in a medium bowl, cover and leave for 5–10 minutes, until slightly bubbly. If using instant yeast, combine with the warm milk and continue with the rest of the method straight away — there’s no need to wait.

Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl (or the bowl of a stand mixer, if using), add the sugar and mix to combine. Pour in the milk and yeast mixture, melted butter and whisked egg, and combine with the flour mixture to form a soft, pliable dough.

If using a stand mixer, mix on low speed using the dough-hook attachment until the dough comes together, about 2 minutes. Slightly increase the speed and knead for another 10 minutes, adding a tablespoon of flour every so often if the dough is too wet and sticky. Don’t add too much flour; the dough should be silky and a little bit tacky. If kneading by hand, tip the dough out onto a lightly floured bench and knead continuously for 10 minutes, adding a tablespoon of flour every so often if the dough is too wet or sticky.

Place dough back into the mixing bowl, cover with cling film, a large plate or a damp tea towel and leave in a warm place to prove for 1–2 hours. The time needed will depend on the yeast used and the temperature of the room. The dough should at least double in size. While waiting for the dough to rise (first rise, or second rise) you can make the fruit compote.

Combine berries and/or chopped fruit, lemon juice, water and sugar or honey (if using) in a small saucepan over medium heat, and stir frequently until thickened and syrupy (5–10 minutes depending on the fruit). Add the cornflour and water mixture if you feel the compote needs more thickening, and stir over a medium heat until combined and translucent. Pour into a bowl and put into the fridge to cool.

When the dough has risen, punch it down, and turn out onto a lightly floured bench. Flatten the dough with your hands, break into small pieces and roll into balls, about 4cm in diameter, or

continued on page 78 77 December / January

Cream-Filled Donuts with Fruit Compote continued

smaller for mini donuts. Press large ones down to flatten and place onto a tray lined with baking paper, or leave mini donuts as small balls, ensuring there is space between each, as they will rise again. Cover with cling film or baking paper, and leave to rise for a further 30 minutes.

Just before the dough is ready, heat the oil in a deep frying pan over a medium heat to 180˚C. You don’t want the oil too hot, otherwise the donuts will brown before they are cooked inside. If you don’t have a cooking thermometer to test when the oil is ready, dip the handle of a wooden spoon or a chopstick into the oil. If the oil starts steadily bubbling, then the oil is hot enough for frying. If the oil bubbles very vigorously, then it is too hot and you’ll need to turn the heat down. If no or very few bubbles pop up, then it’s not hot enough.

Fry the donuts, 4 or 5 at a time, allowing each donut to become golden before turning over to cook the other side, about 2 minutes per side. Mini donuts won’t require as much cooking, so just cook until golden all over.

Transfer cooked donuts to a tray or wire rack to cool.

In a small bowl, mix together the second portion of sugar and cinnamon, and when the donuts are cool, sprinkle the mixture over the donuts and roll to coat.

Slice the donuts through the middle, spoon the fruit compote over the base, top with fresh whipped cream, and place the top of the donut back on. Enjoy these ultimate cream-filled donuts immediately or fill with alternative fillings.

Crème Brûlée

Cut a circle out of the top of the donut and scoop out a little bit of the dough to create a well. Spoon some cold custard into the well, and generously sprinkle white sugar over the custard. Use a blowtorch to caramelise the sugar and form a brittle crust.

Banoffee

Fill donuts with sliced banana, caramel sauce or dulce de leche (milk caramel) and whipped cream.

Chocolate raspberry/blueberry/mandarin/ any freeze-dried fruit Melt white or dark chocolate chunks in a microwave-safe bowl in 10-second bursts, stirring between each time, until smooth. Or melt in a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water. Dip the top of each donut in the chocolate and place on a rack. Sprinkle over freeze-dried berries/fruit. Fill with fresh whipped cream, if desired, either by slicing the donuts through the middle, or by making a hole in the side of the donut with a chopstick, and using a piping bag to fill with cream.

Apple Crumble

Fill donuts with stewed apple and whipped cream. Top with a cinnamon glaze (mix together 1/2 cup icing sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 tablespoon milk) and crumble topping (rub together 1/2 cup flour, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 3 tablespoons cold butter).

Lemon or Passionfruit Delicious

Fill donuts with lemon or passionfruit curd and whipped cream. Top with a lemon glaze (mix together 1/2 cup icing sugar and 1 tablespoon lemon juice).

Taste & Drink

Wine columnist and connoisseur DENNIS KNILL gives his views on two new wines for the month.

From a modest planting of 30 hectares of vines and a small underground cellar Jacob’s Creek has emerged today as one of Australian’s finest wineries famous for some of the world’s leading wine brands. Blame it all on Johann Gramp, who, in 1847, planted the first commercial vineyards along the riverbanks of Jacobs Creek. Gramp and Sons was established soon after, followed by the first vintage around 1850 and the beginning of 175 years of winemaking that continues to this day.

Here are two double delights well worth a try.

Jacobs Creek Prosecco Reserve, RRP $16

A sparkling wine that’s all the rage in Italy. Light in body, it’s balanced with floral aromas and decidedly fresh citrus for an easy-drinking summer wine. Pair with prawns, lobster, sushi, cold meat cuts or an assortment of salami and prosciutto served up on a plate.

Bridging the Gap

Instantly appealing. Its complexity, distinctive aromas and concentrated flavours of fresh ripe citrus give a long dry finish that ticks all the boxes. Serve with chicken, seafood, smoked salmon, summer salads, and cheese or humus on flat bread.

Every week day this sleek little gem of a café is packed with happy customers. Who needs a choice or even a menu when you can sit back and watch the world go by?

Bridge cafe owner and coffee lover, Jamie Barghash, has made his name owning small cafes in and around Auckland. Constructed in a shipping container at the bottom of Parnell Rise, the urban shack décor is charming.

The coffee, tea and non-alcoholic drinks and simple menu is plumped up with excellent food choices that will send you into taste and drink heaven. Add efficient, personable service and value for money, and it’s little wonder why this place is wowing the crowds all day long.

Of Painted Birds and Aviaries

Meet Stephanie King , Sustainable Stylist and

founder of online clothing boutique, Painted Bird Vintage, and her latest venture, The Aviary.

Why is wearing vintage so important to you?

Wearing vintage is about provenance. The pieces were created pre-fast fashion, so, they’re integrous and the truly authentic sustainable and ethical fashion choice. Vintage is a fashion, style and dressing option without

consumptive guilt. Clothing that was created with love sewn into the threads by our grandmothers, aunties, mothers, fathers, and uncles. A piece might have been crafted in anticipation of a life event or for a long-awaited triste. History lives behind each piece making each of them absolute treasures. True

vintage is designed to flatter the wearer. The craft of a home seamstresses, tailor, or fashion designer created necklines, waists and hemlines from fabrics that crossed boundaries between luxe, frugality and function to produce fabulous results!

Fashion 96

What’s your favourite decade?

We stock styles from the 40s to the 90s, but I love 60s and 70s the most because they spell fashion freedom from earlier constraints. The development in necklines, tailoring, waists and straight cuts, hem lengths, the testing of pattern, style, and embellishments from those eras speak volumes. They’re truly reflective of where our fashion in history has taken us, at least within my lifetime.

How do questions of sustainability play into your business model?

I love to see and support designers around the world, both emerging and existing, who are re-inventing fashion with what’s already in circulation. Relaunching era trends and looks certainly helps with the concept of circularity. Yet we can always do more. Look at the overflowing landfills, charities, warehouses full of unused fabrics, and mountains of garments displayed in stores. We could likely sustainably clothe the world for many years before needing to produce any more new-from-new clothing. Designers need to create using their incredible imaginative skills but must balance the 'amount' and 'with what'. In our business model, vintage is the creme de la crème of existing fashion and sits right up there with some luxury brands pre-fast fashion. Sustainability at Painted Bird Vintage in its most raw form means ‘here's the best so you can use what you have’. Just look at our ever-growing online stock of over

3,000 vintage pieces to see incredible examples of garments made almost 70 years ago that look like the day they were made!

Tell us more about latest move, The Aviary.

Needing to pivot, adapt, and hold on tight while always looking in the side view mirror to survive has been de rigour for many SMEs during Covid. Now I’m innovating and prioritising our ‘why’ and continuing to grow it from the roots up. The Aviary in Auckland, is the country’s first of its kind. A boutique fitting room experience designed to cater for those easing themselves into vintage shopping online with the final security of being able to ‘try on’. We also offer a complimentary personal stylist as your host in an entirely private space. Because vintage was made to fit your form, when you come to The Aviary, we will happily measure you as part of the service so that when you do shop with us you have a starting point for smart shopping. The bonus? When you’re looking at our curation, you can easily see if it will likely fit.

What are your hopes for Painted Bird Vintage and The Aviary?

The face of retail has changed from bricks and mortar to online, popups and now to a combination of all three. We live in fluidity now that demands flexibility. The Aviary means, regardless of pandemics, trends, and any unforeseen challenges, we have futureproofed to always have the doors

open for our customers. Offering a curation of wearable, on trend, highend vintage and retro means we’re contributing with the smallest fashion footprint that we can. We offer the best vintage around, try to raise the bar for perceptions and misconceptions around vintage and re-loved clothing, and have it all totally accessible to all who wish to wear 'good' fashion.

Quick vintage shopping tip? Be open to trying vintage that may not be what you thought you were looking for. Trying on the unusual is part of the fun! If the fabric resonates, or the cut or even just the embellishments, spin your dials, just try it. Sometimes your most treasured finds will be those things you saw on the off chance when you stopped by your favourite vintage store or browsed true vintage online. In 99% of the cases, that vintage piece you saw and fell in love with, will be the only one of its kind and that uniqueness is one of the things that will make it special, worn and loved by you. After all, true vintage was made to be worn, not just sold. And therein lies one of the key differences vintage has to fast fashion.

10 Reflux Tips for Christmas

Christmas is an extremely food-focused holiday.

Too much rich food, alcohol and festive stress can trigger reflux symptoms, including heartburn, belching, bloating, an unpleasant acid taste, and nausea.

Here are 10 top tips for surviving the festivities.

1 . Know your food triggers

Avoid foods which you know cause symptoms – it’s often the same troublesome ones that are known to trigger heartburn or reflux. High-fat foods and acidic foods can stimulate reflux symptoms, so go easy on roast potatoes in goose fat or the cranberry sauce.

2. Eat smaller portions

Eating big meals can increase the time it takes to digest food leading to higher concentrations of both acid and pepsin in your stomach. The increased pressure caused by heavy meals is a common cause for reflux events.

3. Avoid after-meal naps or eating late Stretching out for a snooze after a Christmas dinner is hard to resist but it’s best to be upright after eating. Lying flat makes it easier for stomach contents to backflow into your oesophagus and up into the airways. It can a take few hours for your stomach to empty after a meal, so void eating shortly before bedtime too.

4. Eat slower

Eating quickly means the body struggles to signal to the brain that you’re getting full – so people who eat

too quickly tend to overeat. One study also found that those who ate faster had 12.5 episodes of reflux compared with 8.5 for the slower eaters.

5. Cut back on booze Research has shown that the severity of reflux symptoms increases with increased alcohol intake. Drinking can also make your stomach produce more acid which can irritate its sensitive lining.

6. Avoid smoking Studies have linked smoking to reflux symptoms. Nicotine is thought to relax the stomach valve in the lower oesophagus that prevents refluxing into the oesophagus. Tobacco smoke contains toxins and chemicals that can irritate the cells that make up the lining of the oesophagus.

7. Keep hydrated

Your body needs water to work properly, including for aiding digestion. Some say that alkaline water, which is water that has been treated to have a higher pH level than the 6.5-7.5 pH range of most tap and bottled water, can reduce their reflux symptoms.

8. Be prepared

The festive season is a special time for relaxation and indulging in a few treats. If you know you suffer from

post-meal heartburn, you can relieve your symptoms with reflux medication, including antacids and alginates.

9. Maintain a good posture

Avoid slumping or bending – an upright and correctly seated posture during and after eating will reduce symptoms of reflux. Studies indicate that the positioning of the body during a meal can affect the parts of the body that aid in digestion.

10. Loosen your clothes

Tight fitting clothes, especially around the waist, can cause extra pressure on the stomach. Some experts also believe wearing tight clothes can make the stomach feel more gaseous. Perhaps it’s time to invest in a loose-fitting Christmas jumper!

Smoother & More Confident You!

Finesse Face and Body Clinic is proud to be the first truSculpt iD provider in New Zealand, as part of an exclusive partnership with Cutera.

TruSculpt iD is the latest technology available to permanently and non-invasively remove body fat. “We have been leaders in non-invasive cellulite and body contouring treatments in Auckland for 20 years,” says Sue Crake, owner of the Remuera Salon.

How does truSculpt iD work?

truSculpt iD uses a unique form of monopolar radio frequency energy that penetrates evenly and deeply and is able to treat deep into the entire fat pad - from skin to muscle. Once the applicators have been placed on target fatty areas, heat is dispersed evenly, causing irreparable damage to the fat cell walls which the body metabolises and removes permanently over the next 12 weeks. Real-time temperature control and monitoring sensors ensure a constant and therapeutic temperature is maintained for 10 minutes ensuring maximum fat disruption, resulting in 24% fat reduction with every treatment. Patient comfort is ensured through the highly engineered skin adhesives and temperature control which keeps the skin cooler than the underlying fat.

How is truSculpt iD treatment performed?

The initial consultation is performed to assess and discuss your concerns and desired aesthetic goals, then a tailored and customised treatment plan will be created. A total of six handpieces can be used per 15-minute treatment, and multiple areas can be treated on the same day. Once medical consent is completed skin adhesives are attached to the skin overlying the fat pocket followed by the handsfree applicators. The treatment area is wrapped in a cummerbund to minimise movement of handpieces during treatment. After 15 minutes of warmth is distributed into the tissue, the adhesives, handpieces and cummerbund are removed and the patient can return to normal activities.

How do I know if I am a candidate?

truSculpt iD is the latest in non-invasive fat removal procedures in minimising treatment time, maximising results and comfort whilst reducing downtime (there is none!). truSculpt iD is a great treatment for targeting stubborn fat pockets that are resistant to diet and exercise, or for a more global debulking option. truSculpt iD is not restricted by BMI or skin laxity concerns, making it a great alternative to cryotherapies. To learn more about if you’re a suitable candidate, book a free consultation with Sue at Finesse.

How many treatments will I need?

Your initial assessment and personal goals will determine the best course of treatment tailored to you, however patients will only require one treatment. Whether one or two treatments are required, all patients will see an effect at 12 weeks.

Is the treatment painful?

No! Patients report the treatment feels like getting into a hot bath. The heat at first can be a little intense, but just like a bath you become accustomed to the feeling and adjust to the treatment. There is no pain, no downtime and no massage required. Patients can return to normal activities immediately after with most patients only experiences some mild redness on the treatment zone which subsides in a couple of hours.

How long before I see my results?

Clients will begin to see a change in their silhouette from 6 – 8 weeks post treatment, but maximum results are achieved at week 12. Changes in skin quality, tone and texture are usually seen earlier. Each area can be treated once per 12-weeks but other areas can be treated before then.

TruSculpt ID Benefits

NZ MedSafe approved for permanent reduction of up to 24% fat (*shown through ultrasound clinical trials)

Summer Glows

Keep your skin glowing and hydrated this summer with these active skincare ingredients that do all the hard work for you.

Vitamin C

As well as being calming, revitalising, and illuminating, vitamin C is a supremely powerful antioxidant, counteracting the effects of pollution whilst also improving overall skin tone by lessening dark spots and plumping collagen to reduce wrinkles and other associated sun damage.

Suitable for all skin types, a vitamin C sheet mask is a great way to brighten dull skin after a big night out or in a light moisturiser (alongside SPF) for those under the age of 30.

Acids

Acids safely stimulate cell-renewal and work wonders on several issues: scarring, blemishes, pigmentation, dullness, collagen-boosting and even hydration.

Alpha-hydroxy acids, or AHAs, work by dissolving dead skin cells and encouraging the dermis to speed up cell rejuvenation, meaning skin is instantly brightened and improved.

Beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) penetrate more deeply to clear away embedded dirt, meaning they are ideal for acnesufferers and more oily skin types; while malic and citric acid both help

reduce sunspots and pigmentation. Also consider mandelic acid (which is antibacterial), and azelaic acid (antiinflammatory).

Retinol

A vitamin A derivative, retinol reenergises sluggish fibroblasts and boosts the collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin that keep skin smooth and supple making it a worthy foe for wrinkles, acne, sundamaged and pockmarked skin.

However, many are specifically designed to be used overnight as they increase sun sensitivity. Some stronger formulas can also bring about redness and peeling.

Photoprotection

As professional skincare therapists, we see a diverse range of clients at different stages of life and with everchanging skin concerns. Treatments and products may differ but there’s one essential part of everyone’s skincare routine: SPF.

UVR (ultraviolet radiation) is the common denominator that will negatively affect skin regardless of age, ethnicity, or gender. It’s the number one factor in ageing and hyperpigmentation, so protection of your skin should be a nobrainer – and it's time to debunk some of the common concerns and myths.

Give it to me, why is it so important? Skin cancer aside, UVR is the leading cause of premature ageing. Free radical damage destroys collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid in our dermal matrix, resulting in fine lines, volume loss, dryness, and increased wrinkle depth.

Yes, you tell me I need it, but I have it in my makeup.

The SPF in cosmetics does not constitute adequate protection. It’s an added boost to be layered, but not the sole solution. Sunscreen must be used daily as the skin's top layer of skincare product. SPF performance can be enhanced by high-powered serums, treatments and additional moisturisers creating a stronger antioxidant-rich safety net for the skin.

I can’t wear SPF, I suffer from acne. Many sufferers tend to believe that the

sun is good for their skin so essentially bypassed SPF. It’s time to bust this myth. Sun exposure can amplify the side effects of acne, hyperpigmentation, sensitivity, and redness. The follicle that contains the breakout is already inflamed and may become even more so. This causes it to become thin and break, spreading more bacteria, causing deeper hyperpigmentation resulting in dermal scarring like ice-pick scars. The solution?

A formulation that works for you – a mattifying product can often be a game changer.

I’m just too sensitive for sunscreen. UVR can double pre-existing imbalances of sensitive skin. Genetically struggling to maintain and produce a resilient skin barrier can result in a battle to maintain moisture levels, leading to increased inflammation and reactivity and therefore faster ageing. So, finding a solution to protect the skin will aid in supporting it. There is a solution for you, formulations and ingredients are key!

Dry skin.

Did you know that during summer dry skin can become drier? Any skin condition or type that experiences the onset of dehydration and dryness thanks to UVR destroying essential lipid barriers will need to ramp up the hydration. Look for an SPF with additional hydration factors, its formulation can be the game changer!

Normal/combination skin.

You want skin that appears flawless

and healthy, so why would you risk unnecessary damage by not wearing a high-performing sunscreen? As we have said sun protection is key to keeping skin youthful and balanced. We recommend a lightweight multi-tasking product that can be used either by itself or under makeup.

Any final pieces of wisdom?

Did you know that high-shine glosses draw in UV like baby oil? Swap these for a lipstick or balm with SPF. Addicted to the glossy? Layer it on top of the SPF base.

Finding sun protection can be a minefield, especially one that you simply love. Let us take the stress out of your search – we’ve done all the research for you to make it quick and easy to arm yourself with a lifetime of protection. Come in and see, we have the solution waiting for you!

Servilles

Verve's Ashlee gets pampered at Servilles in Newmarket.

Servilles flagship salon may be in the heart of Newmarket, but tucked away on Short Street it feels like a tranquil retreat in the midst of a busy retail and hospitality scene. As soon as I open the door I’m warmly welcomed and my shoulders drop as the hustle and bustle of daily life floats away. This is a swish salon you can feel totally relaxed in, with not a hint of the pretentiousness you might expect from top-quality hairdressers.

Salon manager Olivia Davies has been in the industry for 15 years. We chat about how I normally wear my hair, my lifestyle and routine, and she thankfully doesn’t judge me for my admittedly haphazard haircare regime of late. I’m here today for a simple and straightforward blow wave – taut and straight with a middle parting. I’ll never break up with the blow wave – I’ve blown my coarse hair straight, or ceded the task to a professional, my entire life. There’s something so soothing about it, I love the sensation of straight hair running up my neck as I untuck it from a jacket collar, the way it moves naturally in the wind, and delivers just the right amount of polish.

Olivia guides me over to the shampoo bar, an area designated as a ‘quiet zone’, giving me permission to close my eyes and just be, with no pressure to make conversation and very little stimulus other than the soothing feel of having my hair washed and scalp massaged.

Back in my stool I’m presented with a tea menu while Olivia blow waves my locks, leaving my hair feeling soft, silky and frizz free. We speak about my concerns around my dry, damaged hair and split ends, and Olivia suggests applying Davies Nourishing Keratin Sealer, a protective fluid that

doesn’t need rinsing. Olivia explains that it works to seal hair cuticles, increasing their brightness and softness while at the same time strengthening hair fibre to prevent split ends.

Olivia also suggests I take home the pair of Davines Oi Shampoo and Conditioner – which I find to be an absolute godsend. The strong scent and milky smooth texture of the shampoo allows me to mentally transport myself back to the salon (or a retreat or day spa) while working it up into a foamy lather to deeply cleanse. Enriched with roucou oil, it simultaneously strengthens and protects against environmental damage, while locking in moisture for a refreshed and restored look. Davines Oi Conditioner is rich and buttery, smoothing every fly, and detangling and controlling frizz. I love the scent and the fact that after I rinse it out, my hair feels soft and manageable. Together, this shampoo and conditioner duo are extremely nourishing, providing me with salon-quality products I can use at home for soft, luminous hair on the daily.

Friendly, tailored and pleasingly unpretentious, Servilles is exactly what a luxe local salon should be in 2022. They have a wide service menu to choose from, and are a stockist of Davines quality hair products.

Being Sun Smart

Summer is finally here, bringing the beautiful season of holidays, Christmas, and time spent outdoors.

Lin, multi-award-winning skin therapist and founder of the New Zealand Corneotherapy Institute, writes for Verve about being sun-smart this summer.

Sun exposure is often stated as one of the strongest external contributors to premature ageing and DNA damage linked to the development of skin cancer. In many ways that’s true, sun damage is irreversible, therefore preventative skincare is the ultimate way to maintain skin health and appearance. Let's dig a little deeper into suncare terminology.

The two types of sunlight that reach the surface of our planet are UVA and UVB. To make the difference easier to remember, UVA is responsible for ageing and damage, and UVB is the one causing the burn. Most retail suncare products contain chemical filters such as oxybenzone. They are effective at filtering the UVB light and preventing burns, however, they allow most of the UVA light to penetrate the skin, causing long-term damage. Sunblocks, unlike chemical filters, are zinc oxide-based and provide physical protection that prevents sunlight from penetrating into the skin – both UVA and UVB. Modern professional sunblocks are based on micronised zinc oxide, making application easy, and the added tint helps conceal the whiteness of zinc and evens skin tone. The benefit of topical zinc is its antimicrobial properties which can help with skin inflammation or pathogens, as well as its safety for skin barrier function and hormones, while recent research has shown that components of chemical sunscreen filters are associated with hormonal disruptions and long-term health risks.

Though sun protection is the number one priority for summer skincare, hot weather doesn’t mean we need to leave other skin goals for cooler seasons. Concerns like pigmentation, ageing, sensitivity, or inflammation can be addressed through lighter water-based products containing functional actives. In particular, topical niacinamide (vitamin B3) in combination with vitamin C can be very helpful in treating pigmentation and avoiding free radical damage. The active ingredient to be careful with during summer is all types of topical retinols (vitamin A), as they can increase the photosensitivity of skin associated with pigmentation and damage. Retinoids are to be used at night only during all seasons, and if you’re planning to spend time at the beach, it would be a good idea to take a break from retinol and swap to hyaluronic acid or niacinamide for extra hydration and protection.

Although zinc-based sunblocks are non-negotiable, please remember that no suncare product will provide effective protection all day long. The most reliable way to protect your skin is a layer of light fabric and a beautiful hat, especially from 10am to 4pm. Have an enjoyable summer and feel free to reach out to our new online resource at corneotherapy.nz for a complimentary skincare consultation with me and to shop for clean, professional, cruelty-free skincare.

Spotting Danger

Beauty spots have helped many strikingly beautiful women make their mark, literally.

Whether it was Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor in the 1950s, Madonna and Cyndi Crawford in the 80s, or Dita Von Teese and Angelina Jolie in the 90s, all were instantly recognisable thanks to their distinctively placed facial moles.

Essentially, beauty spots are a small group of melanocytes – the cells responsible for producing melanin, skin’s natural pigment – that grow in a cluster as opposed to spreading out evenly.

So while to the Ancient Greeks a facial mole was a sign that you were destined for a future of prosperity, there are a range of reasons people may prefer to have them removed.

At Clinic 42 we treat moles/lesions or changes under the skin for both functional or cosmetic reasons, or if there is concern about possible malignancy.

We also offer mole checks which are quick and painless and can help identify any changes.

If you opt for removal, there are a number of treatment options available including liquid nitrogen, radio frequency treatment with Surgitron, or definitive excision by minor surgery. Once our doctors have examined your skin, they will advise on the most suitable option.

With all these methods, healing typically takes 10-14 days. The face heals much faster than other areas and if you follow the post procedural advice and keep the area from drying out while healing there is a lower risk of significant scarring.

The treated area will remain pinkish for a few weeks, whilst the skin is younger. As the new skin cells mature, they will more closely resemble the normal colour of the skin.

Depending on the treatment modality employed, the risk of mole/lesion return in the treated area is very low. The doctor will discuss this with you specifically at the time of assessment and treatment.

It’s also important for the first three months after removal of the mole that

you minimise your exposure to the sun or UV rays. If you are exposed to the sun, you should ensure you use at least SPF 30+ sunscreen.

The most common treatment removal by Surgitron is $500 for a 45-minute appointment and removal of ONE mole with the doctor; additional moles are $100. But the doctor will discuss the options with you and if you don’t go ahead with removal on the day, you’ll only be charged a consultation fee.

After all, aristocrats in various parts of Western Europe wore mouches, or ‘flies’ adhesive moles made from velvet or moleskin as a unique fashion statement. Placing them in different positions to convey mood.

If you are interested in seeing a doctor to discuss your options for mole removal or want to find out about the wide range of treatments offered at Clinic 42, visit our website at clinic42.co.nz or contact reception on 09 638 4242 or reception@clinic42.co.nz

Girls That Golf

Golf, like gardening, was one of the outdoor pursuits that benefitted during the pandemic as people sought ways to stave off boredom while staying fit, meaning more women also took up the sport.

But it’s not just covid that’s encouraging the shift, the success of Lydia Ko has inspired a glut of girls to give golf a go, with some clubs reporting a three-fold increase in female membership.

“There’s most definitely more women taking up the sport, and across all age categories which has been incredible,” says Susan Farron, a fully qualified NZPGA professional, and one of the country’s top golf coaches with more than 30 years’ experience in the industry. “Women now view golf as a healthy challenge. A good time filler and a great way to connect socially. Instead of a twohour lunch, nine holes on the golf course is seen as a great way to catch up. I love seeing girl friends learning together, and mothers and daughters golfing together too.”

One such woman is my dear mom who was a latecomer to the game, taking up golf in her 60s and since becoming well

and truly hooked – she’s even bagged herself a few cups along the way (one of which she won by accident without even realising she was playing in a competition, but don’t tell her I told you).

“Gone are the days when people assume that golf’s for the rich and privileged,” she tells me. “People of all ages and from different walks of life are getting involved, and it can also be family orientated. It’s an extremely sociable game that can be played for life.”

The social aspect seems to among the sport’s biggest draws.

“I discovered golf because I had a lot of free time after my grandson went off to school and I didn't have to collect him,” admits Bernie Brown, another keen hobbyist. “I particularly enjoy the 19th hole on a nice summer afternoon! I think women who play golf can be divided into two categories: those who are very competitive, and those like me, who have

Beauty & Health 110

signed up as much or for the social side and the fresh air and exercise as much as they have for the golf.”

As for those who are more competitive, Susan says that women can often be harder on themselves than the men: “Golf is a sport and game that requires time and thinking. One’s own thoughts can play more havoc than the actual hitting of the golf ball. If you want to be a great golfer, you must be prepared to get there slowly and over time – with effort, the rewards will come.”

It will also help develop an arsenal of mental and physical skills.

“Golf requires balance, flow, and a good awareness of body and mind,” Susan continues. “And it pays to have a good imagination to putt and chip. You need to invest in the time to learn the challenging hand position and the tension levels of the body. It’s great to feel the power, how the body can twist and coil and rotate to send that little ball out far and long. It’s one of the most satisfying feelings.”

Programmes such as She Loves Golf which runs events at clubs and driving ranges around the country have been very successful in encouraging more women out onto the fairways and greens.

“Nine-hole golf has been around for many years but has become a far more attractive alternative to 18 holes,” says Susan. “Nine holes take less time, helping women better juggle work and homelife commitments.”

The golf pro warns that we should not take mobility and balance for granted. She has witnessed “incredible joy” from people with all sorts of challenges and conditions including dementia, autism, and ADHD: “I’ve seen people with bad backs, hip and knee replacements, and missing limbs. Whether it be walking a few holes to putting and chipping or using the driving range to swing and move the body, golf really is for all to have a go!”

“It may be a little costly at first, but it can be as cheap or as expensive as you make it,” advises my mother. “I’d certainly recommend it to all as a way of both keeping fit and socialising. Plus, I know that while I’m on the golf course breathing in all that fresh air, I’m not walking around the shops spending my money!”

might even (accidentally) win a trophy.

Black Out Days & L.A. Botanical

Tira Walsh & Joyce Campbell

Black Out Days transforms the gallery space into one of drama and spectacle as the nine paintings occupy one long wall, operating as an architectural mural. Black Out Days refers to both the hues of the paintings and her time as an artist in residence in Karekare, responding to the pitch black nights in the remote location.

This new iteration of L.A. Botanical by Joyce Campbell is a series of ambrotype portraits of plant species introduced to California – which now grow wild and alienated from their original purposes. The exhibition comprises six new large-scale handprinted photographic enlargements from ambrotype negatives, and a selection of the original ambrotype contact prints from 2005. They are dramatic, beautiful and ghostly all at once.

Step into Hollywood

The Hollywood Avondale is a boutique single screen cinema owned and operated by cinephiles.

Every week they play a curated mix of movies old and new, from classic favourites and undiscovered gems to the latest indie fare. The Hollywood offers both digital and 35mm film presentation, housing the largest collection of 35mm and 16mm film in the southern hemisphere. The gorgeous art deco building is also a live music and theatre venue. Since 1915, The Hollywood has been a significant landmark of Avondale village and continues to be an amazing social hub of the community.

Off the back of the success of its lockdown merchandise campaign, The Hollywood is unveiling a unique new series of boot-style t-shirts paying homage to some of their favourite movies. Made with hand-mixed Pantone

inks screened onto Custom Colors cotton tees, this is an extremely limited run with only 30 of each style in existence… once they’re gone, they’re gone forever.

PICKPOCKET

Francois Truffaut’s taut, transcendent masterpiece forever altered the landscape of film. We’ve had this in mind since our Paul Schrader fest earlier in the year because Pickpocket inspired Schrader’s entire career and continues to inform his work half a century later.

PRIME CUT

Don Record was a graphic designer responsible for some of the most striking title cards of the 70s and 80s, including this wild Kansas thriller beloved by our Marathon regulars.

in the business, belying their low budgets, and defined by unhinged action. Living to Die is one of three PM films directed by the great Wings Hauser.

Living with Art

#2
ARTWORK: JOHN REYNOLDS, THISTOOWILLPASS…
(2021)
Art 118

Who during lockdown didn’t spent hours looking at their walls and wishing for an environment that was different, better, or more suited to their needs and desires? Many of us realised that the hastily bought or gifted items that ‘would do’ really didn’t do, or didn’t reflect how we live our lives and the people we’ve become. Given that our homes are typically the location of our most intense relationships, including those with visual objects, don’t make your art an afterthought.

Artworks are a powerful communicator of our engagement with visual culture, our values, and our experiences. Let them lead your spaces and live amongst them and you can’t go wrong. Artist and creative visionary Len Lye was radical and constantly innovative but also firm on one thing, as he proclaimed in 1964: “Great architecture goes fifty-fifty with great art.” Architecture inserts itself into our daily lives. We can’t always change it, but we can choose the art inside and how that art changes the space. If you’ve recently bought a new artwork, in the mood to change your art collection, or have plans to renovate, choosing one work as the pivotal point of a room is transformative. Consider also how the interpretation of an artwork is affected by the environment in which it is placed. Sharpen your critical eye and think through positioning, the colours and composition of the work, its dimensions, where light hits in the room, and the needs and activities of the space. Let the artwork steer the space and help shape decisions that follow.

Don’t underestimate the power of an artwork and wellcurated hang to alter your space. Observe sightlines, and how moving from one room to the next might offer up new locations for art. Consider subtly drawing from an

artwork’s colour palette or vibe to shape other decisions in the space. Remember also that a well-chosen artwork in an entranceway can set the feel for an entire home. Our homes are often where different aspects of our lives collide, especially in contemporary architecture with open plan spaces. An artwork and a few carefully chosen pieces of furniture can help define a zone within a larger space, creating a break-out area for calm and quiet while busy family life exists elsewhere.

A few essential things to remember. Don’t hang your work too high! Consider the furniture in the room and the height of your ceilings but, in general, wall-based art typically looks best hung at a mid-point of 150-155cm. Several large works on a wall together? Match the midline, not the bottom or top of the frame. If you have lots of smaller pieces or a tight space, consider a ‘salon hang' where a jumble of multiple works up and across the wall takes centre stage. Choose a theme and colour palette to unify the works for a harmonious feel.

Environments are influential in shaping human experiences. The best artworks are storytellers, not decoration. They’re almost living things that share our lives, evoke sensation, and tug at parts of us we’re still trying to unravel. Hold some space for them.

Kelly Carmichael is director of Starkwhite Queenstown, and a nominator and researcher for the International Award for Public Art.

WORDS — KELLY CARMICHAEL
Winston Churchill once said: “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” We know that places in which we live and work have an impact on our lives and this fact, especially when it comes to our homes, is too important to ignore.

A Life of Art

With a background in advertising, branding, and new business development, and having recently completed her postgraduate studies in art history, Agoston Cleary understands how art enriches lives. She believes it’s about communication beyond words. Earlier this year, Agoston co-founded Artfull with John Barnett, to bridge the gap between artists and collectors. She tells Verve more.

What’s the concept of Artfull?

It’s about bringing art to everyone, expanding the reach of Kiwi artists and sharing their stories. It’s about accessibility. When we first contemplated what Artfull could be, we were consious that most haven’t grown up going to art galleries, that art galleries can be intimidating places. We’re here to break down those barriers and help people discover the joy of art.

Where does the inspiration for collections come from?

From every day encounters and experiences. Many tap into pure emotion or a mood. We’re keenly aware of visual design and contemporary pop culture – not that our collections are simply ‘on trend’. They’re a starting point to help people discover artworks in a way that’s relatable.

Why should our readers keep an eye on Artfull?

We’re growing fast with more than 50 exciting artists, many of whom are just emerging. Unlike traditional galleries, we update our home page with new artists, works and collections almost every week. As we’ve grown, we’ve also presented groundbreaking in person shows in unexpected places, which is an expression of our ethos of reimagining where art belongs.

What’s the role of an artist in today’s society?

It’s always been the role of an artist to reflect and interpert the world. This has become even more critical. There’s so much unprecedented stuff going on, so much change, it’s almost

impossible to keep up. But today’s contemporary artist needn’t always grapple with big, dense topics, it’s equally important to experiment with colour, materials or abstraction to express collective experiences. There’s something to be said for a painting that’s simply beautiful.

How has the NZ art market changed in the past few years?

It has matured in step with our unique cultural identity. The high prices of the secondary market for works by iconic artsits like Colin McCahon are proof. More female artists are being recognised, too. More people are beginning to discover – thanks to digital platforms like Instagram and now Artfull – that owning original artwork is not just for the few.

What does curation, connection, cultivation mean to your team?

Curation is about being considerd and thoughtful. Connection is about bringing people together – collectors with artists and their work, artists with other artists. Cultivation is about fostering dialogue and a space for artistst to share their work and stories.

How has the digital world influenced various forms of art? It has has added a new way to reach people. The fundamentals of creating art haven’t changed, what has changed, for the better, is that digital platforms and technology make all of this wonderful creativitiy, the world of art, more accessible on every level.

A Creative Cat

Art 122

“I do come from a creative family of painters, designers and crafty sorts,” Cat tells Verve . “My parents are in their 70s and both continue to live their lives to the fullest, as busy as ever and always starting new projects. I think the best thing they passed on was the freedom to follow whatever path we wanted to.”

Cat stifles a laugh when asked at what point she realised she could make a career from her chosen path – most struggle to earn a full time living from illustrating, she reveals, but she’s been able to balance work with “raising my kids, which suited our family situation”.

“After having my first son, I attended a course by Sandra Morris on illustrating picture books. Sandra asked me to join her agency and got me my first illustrating job. It’s awesome to see your work published and I continued to illustrate books through having my second son.”

Cat’s portfolio includes work with boutique and corporate companies as well as illustrating children’s books such as Yak and Gnu and The Best Dad in the World . She takes great inspiration from her boys.

“Their ideas and drawings are really cool,” she says. “Unlike me, they draw completely from their imaginations with no worries about realism or proportion and are always so happy with the result – I need to take that approach more! I think seeing me draw encourages them, especially now that I work half my time on an iPad.”

Does digital drawing affect how you approach your work?

“The drawing programme I use looks and feels like drawing pen on paper, so there's not a lot of difference there. Colouring is very different, however, as I usually use watercolours. The digital watercolours are becoming more realistic, but I still prefer the real thing for its beauty and fluidity. If a job requires me to work digitally and in colour, I do change my technique and use more of a dense, digital gouache brush effect, amongst others.”

What’s your typical creative process?

“Mostly, I’m illustrating for clients based on their briefs. That can be interesting, though, as I’m challenged with drawing a wide range of things, some that I would never have thought of. Things like hammerhead sharks, cabbages, wallabies or mischievous cherubs. I think, ‘Oh, okay…’ and start researching and drawing to find I’m really inspired and into it.”

Illustrating just 32 pages can take up to eight months of “focus and enormous commitment”.

“Like any contractor, being an illustrator is tricky as the jobs come in waves,” adds Cat. “I am very fortunate however, to have a few amazing clients that call upon me regularly throughout the year for illustration work, and I also get new jobs through my website or Instagram.”

Cat’s most proud of her work produced in collaboration with her clients: “Each job is so different and it's very satisfying to be able to turn clients' ideas into illustrations.”

It was at her “tiny rural Waikato school” that illustrator Cat Chapman realised she had a knack for art, being “the kid you went to if you wanted a drawing of a horse’s head – with very long eyelashes!” But, she admits, she never dared dream it possible to do as a job.

ABOVE: Dachshunds designed for Nature Baby

Since 2017, she’s worked with the family-run organic baby clothing and product company, Nature Baby, contributing illustrations to their fabric prints.

“Seeing the final designs is always exciting but it's more so when a special combination of print and clothing garment is released and their customers fall in love with it,” she says. “The latest watercolour pansy print has been extremely popular for them, which is very satisfying.

“I’m also pretty excited about going to the supermarket at the moment and seeing all the freshly rebranded EarthSmart tissues, toilet paper, and wipes packaging I illustrated with Curious Design. I feel like I've spent too much time lurking in the toilet paper aisle, looking at the newly packaged products on display!”

Aside from her boys, Cat says what most inspires her is anyone able to deal with the emotional and financial rollercoaster that comes with being a freelance creative or running a business, navigating those frequent periods of self-doubt while remaining motivated.

“I’m often thinking of changing careers when I feel rinsed out, but then a new brief comes through, something totally random that I’ve never had to draw, and suddenly get excited about the new challenge. About seeing what I can produce.”

In the pipeline is illustrating a new custom-made fabric print with Kristine Crabb of clothing label Gloria (“We’ve talked about it for months, but it keeps getting put on hold as we juggle other commitments. Kristine has great style and I love her art direction”), while, more immediately, she’s looking forward to getting the whole family together for Christmas.

“It will be the first Christmas since the pandemic that we’ve all been able to meet up, so the celebrations will be starting when they arrive on 23 December. Summer’s my favourite season, savouring those long evenings.”

And as for new year’s resolutions? “A bit more travel with my family is high on the list.”

Laughing Gas

Multi-award-winning Sam Smith is one of Aotearoa’s most eminent comics who not only writes for and appears on the likes of 7 Days and Taskmaster NZ, but is also a podcaster, musician, stand-up comedian, emcee, author – and dentist!

125 December / January

The other Sam Smith that our Sam Smith is referring to is the chart-topping UK singer who has a massive soft spot for Aotearoa and has visited on several occasions, making for some confusing search engine results (googling ‘Sam Smith NZ’ throws up the popstar’s upcoming tour dates and pages about previous tours).

“That Sam Smith even had surgery to remove a stye from their eye so it’s like they're stealing my blindness as well as my identity!” the convivial comedian tells Verve (googling ‘Sam Smith blind’ results in YouTube videos of blind auditions of UK Sam Smith’s songs on The Voice).

Sam lost vision in his left eye and part of his right in 2017, a couple of years after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and now advocates for charities such as Able and Blind Low Vision NZ (for whom he hosts a podcast) and serves as an ambassador for Multiple Sclerosis Auckland.

“When I was diagnosed with MS, I knew very little about it,” he says. “There are lots of people out there with it who, aside from having to take medication, are living normal lives – the MP Golriz Ghahraman is a great example, and I’m still doing my comedy stuff.

“We need to see more blind people on TV, too. People like Josh Davies – who’s been on the podcast – he has a brilliant mind and is a fantastic comedian. We need to get used to having these people around until it just becomes normal.”

Do you believe comedy an effective means of dealing with adversity?

“It totally helps for me, that’s my way of dealing with things. If something bad happens, joking about it, being silly, can make that badness disappear.”

Though born in Christchurch, Sam moved to the UK at a young age, and says that shows and comics such as Red Dwarf, One Foot in the Grave, and Rowan Atkinson remain very much an influence. Michael Palin has even called Sam “God’s favourite comedian – and mine!”

“That was a little fabricated,” admits the Kiwi comedian with a laugh. “He was doing a book signing here and we got to hang out. People say that he’s the nicest man in comedy – and he really is, by the way – so I was trying to get him to call me an absolute bastard, but instead he said those kind words and we got it all on video.”

Were you the joker at school?

“I have a distinct memory of being in primary school in England and thinking me and my friends were the funny group. Teachers might disagree, but I don’t think I was disruptive, because I’m a bit of a nerd and enjoyed learning. In my last year at school, I did win the Ultimate Class Comedian Award at a comedy festival, so in a way I guess I was the class clown!”

Though seemingly destined for a career in performing, Sam sensibly still sought some job security and went on to study dentistry while continuing with comedy on the side, but his MS

Art 126
However, he might not be the most famous Sam Smith in New Zealand as he humorously and humbly acknowledges on his website: “… I sing and play music, but I am not THAT Sam Smith.”

diagnosis meant he had to eventually swap the dental chair for the mic full time (“I highly recommend getting MS if you want to get out of your job!”). I ask if he had used humour to put nervous patients at ease.

“I did try to keep the two things quite separate. In fact, I was once doing a show and saw one of my patients in the audience and couldn’t stop thinking about it, and it made me feel more guarded.”

Sam has also written Snake Brought Cake , a children’s book inspired by a poem he wrote for his youngest son, Harry, illustrated by Daron Parton, and published by Hachette NZ.

“I can’t really read to my boys, so poems are a bit easier to remember. Daron’s pictures are so beautiful and funny and just perfect for the book.”

The comedian has just sold his second book, which is about how kids can help their dentists (“Most people don’t know this, but dentists are terrified of children!”), and is also working on a longer adventure series.

“I’ve got a few really cool secret projects coming out next year that I can’t tell you about, even though I really want to! 7 Days is also coming back – I absolutely love it – and I have podcast I do with my friend called The Big Fact Hunt where we challenge each other to find out the best facts on any given topic in the space of half an hour, which is heaps of fun. The Blind Low Vision podcast is ongoing, too.”

Sam will be kicking back with his family and switching off over the festive season (“though when your guard down is often when ideas will pop into your head”), his favourite time of the year.

“I just love Christmas,” he says. “I think it comes from growing up in England where it’s properly cold and you have to hunker down inside and do all the traditional things like sing carols. It’s really stuck with me. Either that, or I’m still just a child at heart.”

FROM DOROTHY BUTLER

AIRY MACLARY AND ZACHARY QUACK

All of Lynley Dodd’s familiar books are wonderful for their rhythm, rhyme, use of incredible vocabulary and of course, delightful illustrations. One of my favourites is Hairy Maclary and Zachary Quack. The language sings so that it’s easy to imagine Hairy Maclary on a drowsily warm day with bees buzzing and an annoying (and very cute) little duckling disturbing his nap. I never tire of repeating the refrain “pittery pattery, skittery scattery, ZIP round the corner came Zachary Quack”.

THE TALE OF THE TINY MAN

On the first day of spring the tiny man pins a note to a tree saying, ‘friend wanted’. For 10 long days he waits, until one morning, a soft wet nose pushes into his hand. Every day, the two friends eat pastries and enjoy each other’s company until a pretty wee girl comes along. Will the tiny man lose his one friend, or will he gain a new one?

SAXBY OF PARADOX BOOKS

My daughter had a stuffed rabbit called Benny. When she lost Benny she was distraught. Benny was never found but in the story Dogger, the stuffed toy is reunited with his owner. An act of selflessness by Dave’s sister Bella makes this possible. Written and beautifully illustrated by the British author Shirley Hughes, kindness wins the day. Suitable for three years up, a delight both to read and to listen to.

Maurice Sendak

I still have my battered hardbacks of two Maurice Sendak titles, Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen. Wild Things’ Max’s iconic wolf costume, naughty expression and haughty stalk are timeless and this book still flies out the door at Time Out. For In the Night Kitchen, I was always enamoured by Mickey and his various states of nudity as he falls into a mixing tin and emerges in a suit made of cake batter.

Growing Trend

Whether to kill time throughout the lockdowns or save money during the current cost-of-living crisis, more and more folk around the world have taken to growing their own produce.

Garden 130
PHOTOGRAPHY: CATHERINE CATTANACH

But gardening guru Kath Irvine says that Kiwis were already well ahead of the curve.

“When I started out landscaping in the 90s, it was hard work convincing people to grow food,” she tells Verve . “I hung in there by letting go of my edible focus and accepting organic was the next big step for everybody, believing food would follow off the back of a toxic food growing system. And it has. Community gardens and school gardens sprung up, and it became more mainstream to question our methods of growing food and linking it to disease. Previously it’d been considered a hippy or alternative thing.”

Kath is famed for her ‘practical, down-to-earth advice’, which she shares in her book Edible Backyard. With over 20 years’ experience, she’s an advocate for all-natural, low input gardens that recycle and reuse and use as little plastic as possible to deliver a “daily serve of fresh organic green for a happy mind and strong body”.

“Many people come to me following a health scare, looking to slow down, and incorporate homegrown and organic as cornerstone of their healing journey. By 2010 I was able to focus entirely on edible gardening and by time 2020 rolled around it was a strong movement in NZ with lots of incredible people leading the charge.”

Traditionally, those taking in interest in gardening had tended to be mostly women aged over 45, but there’s now a good cross section of society finding their green fingers.

“It’s so exciting to witness this groundswell,” says Kath. “Freshpicked organic food and time spent outside is at the heart of our wellness.”

What should everyone have in their garden over the holiday period, and start thinking about for the season ahead? “Ideally your garden grows the things you love best to eat! For me it has to be basil, corn, summer squash, and tomatoes. A gardener is always looking ahead. A broccoli, for example, takes a goodly three months to head up so if you want continuity of supply keep planting – a few new things a week will see you right.”

Kath advises that those just embarking on their gardening journey should consider starting with leafy greens and herbs which are “a brilliant base for loads of good meals and totally doable even for a busy person”.

“There’s a huge variety of leafy greens available and I recommend you grow them all!” she adds. “Crisp, spicy, and bitter salad greens of different colours, as well as a variety of cooking greens – it’s the very best kai, easy to grow and jammed with nutrition when fresh picked. You just can’t buy nourishing greens unless you go to a farmers’ market.”

For city dwellers with less room in the backyard, Kath says that it’s essential to get to know your space intimately. Things to consider include finding where the sun hits at different parts of the day throughout the year, where the wind blows, and where frost sits.

“Once you’ve identified all the sunny sheltered spots put up trellises or frames as tall as you can on the south side and send all the climbers up – cucumbers, melons, beans

131 December / January

tomatoes, small squash – perhaps training fruit trees into two dimensions or even over arches. There’s so much fun to be had here! Twine climbers through trees – beans like growing with apples in my garden.”

Kath also suggests ‘intercropping’ as a way of making the most of limited space, a technique that sees new seedlings planted beneath finishing crops which allows the younger ones to “get their grow on” while harvesting the older ones, resulting in “a lot less downtime in the garden”.

Another tip is to ditch the sprays and fertilisers, even the organic stuff.

“Though they may provide an instant fix, the collateral damage is great, and the irony is that the more you add, the more you need to add because you’ve interrupted the living soil organisms who have the job totally in hand.

“Soil life is at the heart of our gardens’ wellness and by supporting it with gentle natural inputs like seaweed, leaves, herbs, and manure, little and often, and always keeping the soil covered, we create gardens that not only experience less disease and pests but crop more abundantly. It takes a bit of unbundling and relearning, but you’ll find it’s really simple. More importantly it works!”

The key is to regain our trust in natural processes – and the benefits go beyond a bounty of edible harvest.

“There’s nothing better than a yard full of flowers and produce and bees and butterflies and fragrance and medicine and cups of tea,” says Kath. “It’s your own little ecosystem to which you belong.”

Dig into December!

Summer has finally arrived, and the warm December days are upon us. While we know it’s a busy period, adding mindful gardening to your morning and evening routines is the perfect antidote to the Christmas craziness.

Veggies

Plant large-grade tomatoes, capsicums, chillies, and eggplants in pots and in the garden now for a delicious and productive harvest. Tomato plants LOVE their food. Feed with a potassium-rich liquid tomato feed every two weeks. Give your veggies a big drink in the mornings so they have time to soak up the moisture before the afternoon heat. Avoid wetting the foliage.

Fruit Plant citrus right through summer, making sure you keep them well watered. Add instant zest to your garden by planting a large-grade Meyer lemon that

is already flowering. Sprinkle slow-release citrus food around the base of your potted fruit, including lemons, limes, mandarins, feijoas, figs, and olive trees.

Indoor Plants

It’s propagating season! Grow cuttings of your favourite indoor plants either in water or in a sandy or pumice-rich potting mix that is kept moist. Your indoor plants need more water as temperatures rise. Test the soil's moisture with your finger to see if it needs a deep drink or a light trickle.

Garden

Plants

Plant hydrangeas into partly shaded

areas in your garden, under trees or on the south side of a fence or structure. Looking to create a tropical garden? Choose a semi-shaded spot for bromeliads, ferns, palms, and gardenia.

General Garden Tasks

Create fresh floral bouquets for Christmas. We love using hydrangea, dahlia, sweet William, lavender, and lilies. Get those weeds before they seed and spread throughout the garden! Pull out small ones by hand, or spray with organic weed killer if they are still young.

Limin’ in St Kitts and Nevis

144

St Kitts and Nevis sit in the Caribbean Sea, just east of Puerto Rico. First inhabited by South American indigenous people, then the Spanish, the English and the French, a fascinating colonial history is the result.

But it’s the islands’ sheer tropical beauty that really shines. Warm, crystal-clear waters, pristine beaches, lush verdant mountains, and vibrant coral reefs are just the beginning. Add to that friendly locals, irresistible Caribbean rhythms and deliciously fresh seafood and you seal the deal!

First sugarcane, and now tourism, have been the mainstays of these islands for centuries. The remains of 18th-century sugar plantations and the era of slavery upon which they depended make for some very atmospheric sites, some of which are said to be haunted.

St Kitts’s capital Basseterre is a laid-back colonial town with quaint pastel-hued cottages, easily explored on foot. To delve deeper into history, take a drive along the coast from Basseterre to Old Road Town, the Caribbean’s first British settlement, and on to the ruins of a 17th-century sugar mill at Wingfield Estate, then to the imposing hulk of Brimstone Hill Fortress. This Unesco World Heritage site dates back to the 1690s when it was painstakingly constructed by African slave labour.

History aside, there’s a dormant volcano to climb! At just over 1,150 metres, Mt Liamuiga is set amongst verdant rainforest and beautiful hiking trails. Being one of the highest peaks in the Caribbean, the four-hour hike is not for the unfit, but is rewarded with sightings of hummingbirds and tropical flora, along with its resident green vervet monkeys. The views from

the top are (in both senses) breathtaking, as you look down into the crater lake, up to the aptly named Devil’s Tooth rocky outcrop, or out to the neighbouring islands.

For some beach time, head for South Frigate Bay, South Friars Bay, and Cockleshell Bay, or for a quieter vibe try the secluded bays of North Side. Snorkelling is fantastic at the black sanded Dieppe Bay Beach, thanks to a major reef that protects the bay.

Horseback riding is also a great way to experience the island’s landscape, whether through forest trails in the foothills, or along a tranquil beach, stopping for lunch at one of the rustic shacks offering authentic home-cooked food. The island’s cuisine is a highlight itself, especially if you ‘go local’ and embrace the fresh seafood. Don’t forget to try local specialties such as Johnny cakes (delicious fried flatbreads), served with a meat stew called ‘goat water’, washed down with soursop juice.

Tropical fruits are celebrated in the annual Nevis Mango Festival in July, which is followed by the vibrant 12-day Nevis Culturama festival celebrating the emancipation of slaves in the 1830s. These events and the island’s super-friendly people make Nevis well worth the ferry ride across The Narrows between the two islands.

Back on St Kitts, get a taste of Caribbean nightlife with some bar-hopping along The Strip in Frigate Bay. Live music, rum cocktails and freshly barbequed lobster grilled right on the beach, with a backdrop of crashing waves and soca rhythms. This truly is Caribbean life at its best! Time for some limin'!

WORDS CAROLINE CLEGG, WORLD JOURNEYS
If you’re limin’ in the Caribbean , you’re hanging out, relaxing, taking it easy. Leave plenty of time for limin’ in St Kitts and Nevis to get to the heart of this Caribbean nation.

The Grand Budapest Hotel - R

Screenwriter and director Wes Anderson has a compelling visual language instantly recognisable by his cult following, brilliantly exemplified in The Grand Budapest Hotel. A film celebrated for its engaging plot and intricate, symmetrical beauty, from the moment it begins, you don’t want it to end – a viewing experience comparable to staring into a painting whose images play out before you, surreal and dreamlike. A staple of Wes Anderson's work is his use of abrupt violence, out of place in the candycoloured worlds of his films.

The film centres around The Hotel Budapest, a bustling 1930s European ski resort known for its style and luxury, told from the perspective of junior lobby boy Zero in his older years as he recounts past events that led to him becoming the hotel’s owner. The hotel is managed by concierge Gustav H., a man who prides himself on providing the highest quality of service to his guests. When a frequent visitor of the hotel, an incredibly rich elderly woman, passes away under mysterious circumstances, Gustav H.

is left an invaluable painting, much to the dismay of the woman’s family. Unfortunately for him, he also finds himself the prime suspect in the investigation of her murder.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a superb example of Wes Anderson’s uniquely charming and humorous filmmaking

It was John and Margaret’s daughter who suggested they look at Eden Village. “We never thought we would move into a retirement village” says John, but when they first saw their brand new apartment, they knew it was the one. “The sun was shining, it was beautiful. Our daughter said, ‘Look, you just couldn’t turn this apartment down.’”

Village size was key for the couple. “We were looking for something boutique,” reflects Margaret. “We liked that it was small and more intimate.” The tasteful décor and design also appealed, “the place is so light, open and airy,” she tells us.

Margaret and John are enjoying their newly found freedom. “Our house was hard to maintain because of stairs, large grounds, and maintenance,” said John. Now, with plenty of activities to join in, and the time to enjoy them, Margaret says, “we’ve never been so busy!”

Saving the Silent

Pet Refuge is a first of its kind charitable trust in Aotearoa – and an extremely worthwhile one – established to take in pets of people seeking to escape domestic abuse.

149 December / January

New Zealand has among the worst rates of domestic violence in the developed world, and among the highest rates of pet ownership –often those statistics overlap with heartbreaking consequences.

Research by Women’s Refuge found that 22% of children had witnessed pet abuse; nearly a quarter of family violence victims had a pet killed by a partner; and more than half of women delay leaving out of fear for the safety of their pets. Women like Meg (“My abuse was mostly mental… he’d lash out at the dog, and Jem would whimper”), Sally (“I’m not your stereotypical victim of domestic abuse. I’m white. I’m well off. But abuse doesn’t discriminate… if I leave the pets… will he kill them like he’s threatened to?”), and Phoebe (“Finding a rental with an animal as really hard. If I did leave, I just kept going back to the dog, and this really toxic relationship”).

According to Women’s Refuge, nearly three quarters of women would have found it easier to leave if there was a shelter offering temporary accommodation for their pets. And that was the genesis for Pet Refuge,

New Zealand’s first shelter dedicated to temporarily housing pets affected by domestic violence whose end goal is reuniting the animals with their families.

The charity was founded by Julie Chapman (who’s also co-founder and CEO of child poverty charitable trust, KidsCanNZ), after hearing about the Women’s Refuge stories from an old colleague. Having lost both her parents in the past few years, Julie used the money left to her from the sale of their home to buy land to build Pet Refuge, an idea she’d discussed with her dad before his passing. Julie says that her parents were “always the first to put their hand up to help anyone in need in their community”.

After four years of planning and toil, Pet Refuge opened its doors in 2021, thanks in part to the Trillian Trust, the Lindsay Foundation and build and design partner Signature Homes, along with many a kind donation from the public. Pet Refuge also partners with Women’s Refuge and domestic abuse charity Shine and has had guidance from the RSPCA in New South Wales which has been running a similar scheme for more than 15 years.

Fur Friends 150
“For victims of family violence, it's an even deeper bond, because animals can be their only source of comfort.”

“When you're constantly told you're worthless, when your self-esteem is at rock bottom, you cling onto your cat or dog,” says Julie, who began rescuing injured birds as a child, and now continues to adopt cats with health issues. She’s also been on the receiving end of an abusive relationship. “For victims of family violence, it's an even deeper bond, because animals can be their only source of comfort.”

Since opening, the ‘safe haven’ of Pet Refuge has cared for around 200 animals and plans to open more centres. There are no wire cages, but there is underfloor heating and designated areas for sleep and play to ensure that all dogs, cats, and other small pets feel safe and secure. For larger creatures like cows, goats and horses, the charity works with a nationwide safe farms network.

Julie says that the dream is to ensure that women, men, children, and their pets can break free from domestic violence and start new lives together: “That’s what success looks like.”

Sleeping with the Enemy?

153 December / January

A 2019 UK study by dating website eharmony estimated that Brexit had caused the disintegration of 1.6 million relationships in the three years since, with a further 2.7 million breaking down as a result of non-Brexit political beefs. (16% of those polled also revealed the vote to leave the EU had impacted relationships with friends, family, and workmates.)

In the US it was a similar story with the election of Trump. A 2017 Daily News story titled ‘Trump presidency is destroying marriages across the country’ revealed a study by Wakefield Research had found 29% of Americans were experiencing tension because of their partner’s political beliefs. A further 22% said they knew a couple whose marriage or relationship had suffered since the election of Trump.

“I’ve been doing this for around 35 years, and I have never seen anything like it,” New York divorce lawyer Louis Brenner commented to the Daily News regarding her increased workload thanks to the recently elected president. “It’s kind of amazing… unprecedented.”

Thanks in part to the MMP system (and perhaps some good old Kiwi common sense?), we’ve generally avoided such populist-fuelled polarisation, but issues such as misinformation, the vaccine rollout, and 5G and covid conspiracy theories have reportedly ruptured relationships here.

But can such couples ever overcome contradictory ideologies?

“The ideal way to talk about political differences as a couple involves both partners sitting down and talking about the dreams and goals you have in common,” Dana McNeil, Ph.D., a San Diego-based licensed marriage family therapist, tells Today. “This creates an atmosphere of finding similarities and shared values. The goal is to find ways that you will navigate the major issues without tearing down the other person's character.”

It's also vital to remember that, unless your significant other is, say, a flag-waving racist, it’s likely they’re ticking their particular box in the polling booth because they genuinely believe it will make the world a better place. Empathy and the willingness to listen are essential (as is setting boundaries about when and how often hot topics should be discussed).

Relationship expert Candace R. Cooper says that empathy allows us to understand and embody our partner's values without shifting our own. “It allows you to see the full picture without assuming or creating your own judgment of what your partner's beliefs are,” she tells People

also advise that couples should educate themselves about each other’s political philosophies.

Experts
154
Populations and their politics have never been so polarised. But is it possible to have a romantic relationship with someone with opposing views?

“It’s always good to broaden your horizons,” says relationship counsellor Ruchi Ruuh to Vice . “You’ll have greater appreciation for your partner and healthier discussions around the topic.”

Interestingly, political differences might not even matter as much as we think they do anyway. In his tome A Book About Love, John Lehrer writes about how a study of 23,000 married couples found that “the similarity of spouses accounted for less than 0.5 percent of spousal satisfaction”. That is to say, what we think we want in a life partner –someone who’s just like us – and what we want in real life are “fundamentally mismatched”.

According to research published in the American Journal of Science, we possibly also overestimate the influence our political leanings have on our morals. The study authors note how people overlook things done by politicians on their own side that they’d consider “morally over the line on the other side” (think evangelicals overwhelming support for the adulterous, woman’s genital-grabbing Trump), able to “switch our moral compass depending on how it fits with what we believe politically”.

Other US studies have found women to underestimate the likelihood of their spouses voting Democrat and for men to overestimate the likelihood of their wives to vote Republican. A New Zealand study found the common notion that couples

become more alike as they get older may not hold water either, it might simply be a case that we just become more accepting.

And acceptance is an ultimate key to any happy relationship, whether it be their strange dress sense, their OCD habits, or which political party they endorse every few years.

“The bond you have with someone has to supersede political views if it’s ever going to work,” dating psychologist Madeleine Mason Roantree tells the Independent. “There has to be a level of respect there too, towards the other person, and an acceptance that they might have different views.”

The Lost King tells the lifeaffirming true story of a woman who refused to be ignored, taking on the country's most eminent historians and forcing them to think again about one of England’s most controversial kings.

Directed by Stephen Frears, starring Sally Hawkins, Steve Coogan.

A Leg-up onto the Ladder

After a period of prohibitively high property prices, first home buyers are now taking advantage of the slowing property market and taking the leap to property ownership. Some are looking at alternative ways to secure their first home, such as the ‘bank of mum and dad’. Many first-time buyers are given assistance from family to purchase a first home. This can be done in several ways:

Gift Usually the bank’s preferred option, it involves the family member signing a deed of gift stating the funds have been gifted outright. If first home buyers are married or in a de facto relationship, the gift will generally become ‘relationship property’. A relationship property agreement (aka pre-nup) should be considered.

Deed of Acknowledgment of Debt The first home buyer and the lending party (parents) sign a Deed of Acknowledgment of Debt stating the loan is interest-free and repayable either ‘on demand’ or on the sale of the property. Banks are increasingly more agreeable to this option.

Loan agreement with requirement to pay interest

This option is generally not favoured by the banks, so a likely barrier to first home buyers getting a loan approval.

Guarantee provided by parents This involves the parents (or other related person) using the equity in their own property as security for the first home buyer’s loan. The guarantor must get independent advice from their own solicitor before signing the guarantee. The guarantee may be unlimited but can be limited to a certain amount on request. A riskier option for parents, so consider carefully.

Co-ownership with friends and family Purchasing a first home with friends, siblings or parents is another solution. All parties have their names on the property’s title as ‘tenants in common’ in equal or unequal shares, with all jointly liable for the mortgage. It’s essential for the parties to enter into a Property Sharing Agreement recording the terms of the co-ownership arrangement.

It’s essential to get legal advice before entering into any of these arrangements.

Cash Matters

The UK’s leading money saving expert MARTIN LEWIS looks at the emotions we all attach to money, and how easy it is to let our worries guide us.

Someone asked me the other day what it was that terrified me most in life. I wouldn’t describe myself necessarily as one of life’s worriers, but I do like to take a cautious and protective approach to my family, my finances and myself. And for the most part I think that’s pretty much the same for all of us.

I think what has worried me most in the past is mental health – keeping hold of that strand of sanity; the ability to be able to function in a society that invites pressure in from all sides.

I have had some battles with mental health in the past, and when your mental health is good then all the other challenges and trials in your life seem approachable.

Unfortunately, the link between mental health and money is arguably the most tacit of them all – both affect and impact each other. Yet the assumption that people with money are stress-free, and those on the breadline are shredded with worry, is wrong.

When I sold my website, MoneySavingExpert, it’s fair to say I had enough in reserve not to worry about bills; yet as an advocate for fairness, for affordability and as someone who wants to protect consumers and the vulnerable, I’ve never once stepped away from the coalface, nor would I want to.

I feel a deep responsibility to people who have put their trust in me over the years, and never have those feelings intensified more than to the level we are at now, where I feel there is so much wrong with the system.

We continue to sit on the precipice of a real emergency, and I am one of millions who fears for the welfare of the average person. This isn’t about the rich, the poor, the middle-class – it’s just about people.

Do I believe we will emerge out of this crisis? Of course. Yet lessons have to be learned so that we don’t end up here again… for the sake of our communities, our families, and our own mental health.

Horoscopes

This is the time when personal finances and possessions receive maximum attention. You are more inclined to dig your heels in and hang on to what makes you feel most secure than to take big risks. This is a time to do what

can to build trust in your family life and a strong foundation within yourself, so that you have a secure place to return to.

This is a cycle in which you seek a higher meaning to your life, and seek out new experiences that take you beyond the mundane details of the day to day. Anything that broadens your experiences attracts now. You may be drawn into some form of service that will bring deep personal satisfaction. You need the energies and support of other people, and they also are drawing upon you a great deal.

Your humanitarian impulse may be stimulated. You will need to concentrate on truly listening to those close to you, and on playing a supportive role. You seem to be open to working with others especially if it helps you to grow financially or personally. Some stresses and strains are likely now, mainly revolving around work and down time matters, and striking a balance between the two.

This is a strong period for work matters. Lovely synchronicities are in store, leaving you feeling like life is quite magical. You have a taste for the exotic that can show up in many areas of your life – who you are attracted to, what you buy, the kind of art or entertainment you enjoy, and so forth. You have a strong desire to cooperate and communicate with others.

This is a time when you can be brave and enjoy new experiences. Your mind is especially inquisitive during this cycle when learning, short trips, and other forms of communication and making connections, appeal strongly. You may find yourself in a position in which there is a blending of financial matters with social or public affairs. This is a stable month for love matters and close relationships.

It’s a time to find new ways to build greater financial opportunities and financial connections. This is also a good time to make a positive first impression for a job interview or meeting, and for rethinking and revising educational and travel plans or goals. The focus can also be on cultivating and nourishing your inner foundations that support you and your growth.

VIRGO

23 August –22 September

Your energy levels can fluctuate dayto-day, and much depends on your emotional state of mind. Frequent periods of quiet and solitude are necessary in order to recharge your energies. Some may experience insomnia during this phase, especially if they’re not allowing themselves the chance to recoup. You need to mark this period by a desire to sort things out, but also to be useful.

GEMINI

21 May –20 June

Setting realistic financial goals, as well as formulating budgets and other sensible financial planning projects, will be favoured during this time. It’s also a wonderful time for enjoying moments of pleasure through earthy, tactile, and comforting endeavours. You may particularly value the aesthetics in and around your home. It’s a great time to pick up information from your environment and the people in it.

LIBRA

23 September –22 October

Your self-esteem and your ego are tied up in the work you do and in the services you give. Details are more important to you now. You’re at your most convincing, as others are accepting you at face value. Sharing interests with someone is what makes you happy during this cycle. The period enlivens your friendships and group associations with charm and grace.

CANCER

21 June –22 July

It’s a good time to develop new business plans and goals. A sense of renewal and reinvigoration with regards to your career goals is possible. Your comfort zones matter, and now is the time to take care of your own needs without eclipsing the needs of others. Goals for self-mastery and self-discipline should be made now. It’s time to put your best foot forward.

SCORPIO

23 October –21 November

You are especially resourceful now, and you could find yourself enjoying or seeking attention for your intellectual know-how. The ability to express and communicate your ideas is extremely important to you. The flowing, expressive, and spontaneous energy surrounding you attracts likeminded people. It’s time to balance your life with some down time during the month end, otherwise, you simply don’t feel whole.

LEO 23 July –

22 August

Discovering ways to increase your income is featured. Pour your energy into your work and your finances, and you might just be able to take your ideas to the bank. Extravagance with your pocketbook is something you may want to look out for, however. You would have a sense of enthusiasm with regards to your ability to express yourself spontaneously and creatively.
