2018 IVAS 44th Annual Congress
Welcome We are very excited to host the 44th Annual IVAS Congress in the home state of the IVAS office! If you have never been to the Colorado Rocky Mountains, then you are in for a real treat. If you have been, then you know why you are coming back. Crisp mountain air, tall pine and aspen trees and the most amazing views you can find in all of Colorado! September is the perfect time to visit the mountains as the days are warm and the nights cool making for the perfect combination to spend some time outdoors. John Denver once sang about the Rocky Mountain High, but I don't think he was referring to what is now legal in Colorado. The town of Breckenridge is at an elevation of 9,600 feet (2,926 meters) something to consider if you live closer to sea level. The Colorado Rocky Mountains seem to be known best for skiing which opened in the town of Breckenridge in 1961. However, don’t be fooled as there is much to do even without the snow. There is hiking, wildflowers, fly fishing, mountain biking, white water rafting and alpine slides just to name a few. Home to the largest historic district in Colorado, Breckenridge’s rich and colorful history is full of gold finds and mining, exploration and adventure, brothels, saloons, booms and busts. Founded in 1859 by a small group of prospectors, the town’s Gold Rush brought droves of settlers seeking their fortunes.
A fun fact, the town spelling of Breckenridge with an “e” was changed from Breckinridge with an “i” when the Civil War broke out. When the former 14th Vice President John C. Breckinridge from Kentucky, who the town was named after sided with the Confederates they changed the town name's spelling. George E. Spencer named the town after the 14th Vice President of the United States in the hopes of flattering the government and gaining a Post Office. Spencer’s plan succeeded and his Post Office was built. It was the first Post Office between the Continental Divide and Salt Lake City, Utah. The mines of the 1800’s have long since closed but Breckenridge was founded to serve those Placer Gold from Farncomb Hill, near Breckenridge miners working the rich placer gold deposits discovered along the Blue River. Did you know that the Breckenridge mining district is credited with production of about one million troy ounces (about 31,000 kilograms) of gold? Inside this Congress Brochure you will find all the information you will need to know about the upcoming IVAS Congress. Be sure to look at the Congress Schedule, check out the Wet Labs, how to book your room at Beaver Run and the Congress Registration along with helpful hints on how to get to the Congress and the town of Breckenridge. We look forward to hosting the Congress in Colorado, the wonderful home state of the IVAS office and hope that you have already made your plans to attend, if not we hope that this brochure will change your mind! See you in September!

2018 Keynote Speaker Cynthia J. Lankenau, DVM, CVA, CCVHM, RH (AHG) Keynote Topic: The Six Stages: A Way to Understand Today’s Chronic Diseases Dr. Lankenau grew up in the Hudson Valley in New York State on a dairy farm, went to Cornell for undergraduate and veterinary school, graduating from veterinary college in 1981. Initially out of school, she practiced in a 99% dairy practice. To spice up life a bit, from 1984-5, worked in Malawi Africa, while in the Peace Corps. Upon returning to the US, started back in a mixed animal practice and quickly became frustrated with limitations in conventional medicine. In 1991, she started down the alternative path.
After certification in acupuncture with IVAS in1991, she established a 100% alternative modality practice; with chiropractic, homeopathic, herbal training/ certification through our various organizations; AVCA in 1995; Chi’s Herbal program 2002; IVAS’s Chinese Herbal in 2011; CIVT’s Western Herbal Graduate Program, Dr. Pitcairn’s Homeopathic Training in 1995; and is currently finishing Chi’s Master program.

2018 IVAS 44th Annual Congress
Outdoor Adventures The typical High Country fall starts in late August/early September and lasts through the beginning of November when most of the ski areas are open or opening. During the fall, temperatures can dip to downright cold at night. The weather tends to be quite dry; in fact the driest months of the year are September and October. Cooler temperatures and dry conditions are the perfect mix for all sorts of activities. The summer vacation season is winding down and there are fewer crowds. Most restaurants and retail establishments offer their best deals of the year and almost all businesses remain open during the fall since they have to staff up to get ready for the upcoming winter season.
The Spruce Creek Trail is a very popular 6.2-mile trail rated moderately difficult that gains 1,791 feet in altitude. The best time to visit is from April to October, which is Spruce Creek Trail also when the trail has the most traffic; however, it is a beautiful snowshoeing destination in the colder months. The trail follows a stream for part of its length and features a straight section that connects to a loop. At the top, it's possible to connect to other trails. The trail can be accessed by two separate trailheads, whereby the upper trailhead is only accessible by 4-wheel drive vehicle
Hiking
Peaks Trail is a long alpine trail that is 15.5 miles long and is rated as difficult, gaining 1,971 feet in elevation overall. The trail is somewhat popular, especially the lower sections. The trail can be accessed from either Frisco or Breckenridge and is an out-and-back trail. Breckenridge to Frisco features more downhill sections than the other way around. The multi-use trail is popular for mountain biking, hiking, birding, cross-country skiing, trail running, backpacking, and more. The trail is dog friendly and features include creeks, beautiful rocks, wildflowers, scenic views, and the possibility to see wildlife, including moose.
If you are looking to experience the golden fall colors of the changing Mohawk Lake aspen trees, a hike is one of the best ways to go. There are many trails for all abilities that offer stunning walks through golden aspen groves. One of the best things about hiking is that it is pretty easy and totally free. There are many hikes that offer great exposure to the aspens. Located just a few miles from Breckenridge, Mohawk Lake is the perfect intermediate family hike. The trail winds through the woods for about two miles before breaking out above tree line. The trail continues to Lower and Upper Mohawk Lakes offering stunning alpine vistas along the way. Sawmill Reservoir is a scenic lake at the end of a trail. The trail also circles the lake and is a stunning place to take photos. Benches line the trail for those who need a break or just want to sit back Sawmill Reservoir and take in their surroundings. The trail getting to the park is family friendly and an easy grade, while the trailhead is located just beside the Snowflake Lift. The trail runs alongside a stream as it travels to the top. The terrain is smooth and can be easily hiked in sneakers. Catch-and-release fishing is allowed along the stream and in the reservoir.
The Blue River Recpath travels 7.5 miles between the towns of Breckenridge and Frisco, passing through the beautiful Blue River Valley and along Highway 9. The trail passes both the Dillon Reservoir and the Blue River and trail users can enjoy scenic views of the Tenmile mountain range in the distance. The trail is paved for its entire length and most of the trail can be biked. It features only a bit of a climb in elevation but the perceived difficulty Ten Mile Range may be amplified by the high elevation if you aren't used to it. From the Blue River Recpath, visitors can connect to other trails, such as the Dillion Reservoir Recpath and the Tenmile Recpath.

2018 IVAS 44th Annual Congress Biking Biking is another fantastic way to see and experience all that is fall in Summit County and Breckenridge. Like hiking, biking is relatively inexpensive. Bike rental is the only real expense and the extensive bike path system as well as backcountry trails offer rides for anyone. Many local companies offer shuttles to the top of Vail pass so you can ride the bike path down from the top of the pass back to Frisco or Copper Mountain. For a little more adventure look for a backcountry trail. Breckenridge and Summit County offer miles and miles of trails. One of our favorites is the Peaks Trail that starts just after the Grand Lodge on Peak 7 and goes about 9 miles to Frisco. You can start at either end and ride back on the bike path to where you are staying. The whole ride is about 20 miles and takes under 3 hours. Water Sports The beauty of kayaking is that it can be as serene or as adrenaline-filled as you like. For those who haven’t tried it yet, kayaking is an easy way to get on the water. Rent a version called a “duckie,” which allows you to sit on top and allows for an easier recovery if you tip over (not that you will). There are tours on Lake Dillon that depart from the Frisco Marina and point out local wildlife. For those with a bit more skill under their life-jacket, Breckenridge is home to an 1,800-foot-long whitewater kayak park on the Blue River. There are more than 15 water features for beginners and experts alike, but be aware that park flows are dependent on water levels. One of the most popular summertime activities in Breckenridge is whitewater rafting. Several local companies offer tours on rivers that are located within an hour of Breckenridge, including the Colorado, Arkansas, Blue and Eagle Rivers and Clear Creek with even more options if you don’t mind traveling a bit farther. Ranging from scenic float trips
that are great for families with smaller children to excursions with heart-pounding Class IV and V rapids, there’s a rafting trip for just about everyone. For something truly unique, try a full moon rafting trip or spend a few days on the river with an overnight trip. Stand up paddleboarding may have started in the ocean, but it has been fully embraced in the mountains. There are several rental locations in Breckenridge and you can take a board out for a half day or a full day. Maggie Pond is great for beginners when the wind is light; for a longer tour, take a paddle around Lake Dillon—there are plenty of little coves to explore and a convenient put-in point at the Frisco Marina. Once you’ve conquered the flat water, the river is the place to be. Several shops offer SUP river lesson and tours and it’s a totally different experience. It requires more balance and concentration, but also provides some spectacular views and a totally different river experience than being on a kayak or in a raft. Colorado is known for its fly fishing (and fly fishing fanatics) and Breckenridge is no different. There are world-class fishing spots in town that allow anglers to vie for both rainbow and brown trout as well as the occasional brook trout. If you’re a fly fishing novice, there are several great shops in town that can hook you up (no pun intended) with gear and a guide. Utilize a guide—they not only know the best spots, but they are also incredibly in tune with the taste buds of these trout. Though there are plenty of good spots in town, there are also other opportunities to fish in the high alpine lakes or on a float trip on a nearby river. Enjoy the wide variety of fishing opportunities in Breckenridge.

2018 IVAS 44th Annual Congress There are many other activities in and around Breckenridge - zip line, wall climbing, summer dog sledding, horseback riding, shopping, and more.
Don't worry if outdoor adventures aren't for you, there's something for everyone to do in Breckenridge.
Out and About in Breckenridge Breckenridge's main street looks similar to the way it did a hundred years ago. Many of the authentic buildings are still there, and the facades of these buildings will remind visitors of a time when Breckenridge was part of the Wild West mining rush. Historic Main Street Breckenridge features more than 200 shops selling a variety of items, many featuring locally produced or handmade items such as handmade soaps at Milagros of Colorado and authentic Navajo weavings at the Paint Horse Gallery. The Breckenridge Heritage Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of Breckenridge. They maintain many historical sites and museums and provide a variety of tours of the area. The Alliance offers several walking and hiking tours, with tour options including historic walking tours, holiday tea tours, haunted tours, saloon tours, and many more. Several historic hiking and snowshoeing options are also available as well as a Ski Through History Tour. The Brexpedition tour is designed to give visitors a good overview of Breckenridge, including historical sites, popular restaurants, souvenir shops, and much more. The Breckenridge Recreation Center is a 69,000-square-foot community sports and activity center that features sports facilities such as a gymnasium, indoor tennis courts, and a racquetball court. The center also offers a wide range of exercise equipment, including cardio machines, free weights, an indoor track, aerobic and dance studios, and more. The aquatic section of the facility features a lap pool and a community swimming pool with a water slide, a sauna, spas, and a shop that sells swim suits, amongst other things. The centers amenities are not limited to the indoors: The large outdoor area offers yet more
tennis and basketball courts as well as soccer and softball fields, a rugby pitch, and a lighted skateboard park. Country Boy Mine was once one of the largest gold mining operations in Breckenridge and is also one of the town's most famous gold mines. The gold mine is no longer in operation, but is open to visitors for tours. The tour travels more than 1,000 feet into the mine and gives visitors the opportunity to imagine what it might have been like to work in the mine. During your visit to the mine, you can also pan for gold, feed and pet burros, and slide down a 55foot ore chute. The mine has several exhibits and old mining equipment on display. There is a general store on site selling old fashioned candy, toys, books, and many different rocks. The Broken Compass is a Brewery and Tap House with an open and welcoming atmosphere with the vibe that is so typical of Colorado. The brew house serves beer and only beer, although the tap house stocks several classic flavors of beer such as the Helles and the Irish Red. In addition, they serve several unique brews like a Chocolate Coffee Stout and a Coconut Porter that gets rave reviews. The Broken Compass is very dog friendly, so feel free to bring along your fourlegged pals. Occasionally, food trucks set up outside to serve delicious food to go along with your beer. The brewery sells Broken Compass branded apparel, gear, and other merchandise in their in-house and online store.

You will see Beaver Run Resort and registration parking approximately 1/2 mile uphill on the left.
Post Congress Fun We are considering “Post Congress Fun” activities! Remember, Post Congress Fun is not sponsored by IVAS. It is a great group of people who want to extend their fun and see a bit of the area. One of the big things to do in the Breckenridge area is white-water rafting; however, it all depends on how much water and how high the rivers are running, and that depends on the snow pack! Right now (when we were putting this Congress Brochure together) rafting companies can’t predict until the snow melts if rafting will still be good in September but we should know more by late June. Here are the activities we are looking at so far. White water rafting (something for those that want to try it… not class IV or V), zip line, horseback riding, hiking and possibly even dog team summer running. If you are interested in joining the Post Congress Fun activities please email dprevratil@ivas.org to let us know what you are interested in and get placed on the list. You can pick and choose your fun. We are looking at Sunday and Monday following Congress, as most of these items are just ½ day or a few hour activities. Maybe golfing is more to your liking. There is a 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course in Breckenridge. They do rent clubs and have all the amenities. Once we know how many are interested and in what activities, we can make final plans. After you are on the list, you will be notified of what we are doing and how to book your fun. IVAS Gear The IVAS office is offering a special service to our international attendees of the Congress this year. Ordering IVAS gear has been a challenge for our members not based in the United States. The Fieldhouse company does not ship outside the US. If you would like to order IVAS gear (shirts, scrubs, hats, mugs and more) and have it delivered to the IVAS office, we will be happy to bring your order to the Congress for you, saving you very costly shipping expenses. We ask that you put your name in the address so we know who the order is for. Also, please email vwalker@ivas.org if you place an order so we know to expect a package. You can find this gear at www.fieldhouse.com/IVAS. Contact us for more information. The delivery address for the office is: IVAS “Your Name” 1730 South College Avenue, Suite 301 Fort Collins, CO 80525
