Trade School Teaches Toronto By Ada Adams Photography by Chris Tranter and Wales Wong

In today’s society, learning usually has an inevitable dollar sign attached to it. Prestigious academic degrees can cost thousands of dollars and even exploring hobbies often adds up to a heavy financial burden on the student. Trade School is an alternative, selforganized school that offers a different option by running a barterfor-knowledge system. It places value on “hands-on knowledge, mutual respect, and the social nature of exchange” by believing that “everyone has something to offer”. Started in 2010 by a group of friends from New York and now expanded to different areas all over the world, the Trade School is focused on a very student-centered view of learning that enables people to pursue their passions without the limitations that a lack of funds may place on learning. The team behind this alternative way of learning believes that studying under trained instructors doesn’t have to cost next month’s paycheck. Instead, instructors set other payment methods for their classes, ranging from bringing materials or snacks to simply attending with a positive attitude! On March 7- 9, 2013, Trade School came to Toronto when its hardworking team of organizers and volunteers teamed up with the University of Toronto’s Hart House to put forth some exciting classes for people of all ages and educational backgrounds right here in our city! Hart House’s mission to “create quality, co-curricular learning opportunities for on-campus constituents as well as the community at large” was put into practice thanks to the efforts of its coordinator Sam Saad. Mr. Saad found the alternative learning model of the Trade School’s philosophy to be a great fit for Hart House and went on to say that he believed the students benefited from its enthusiastic and capable instructors, and from being “more involved in learning itself through being active participants in the program”. Mr. Saad took part in an Improv class as well as the 8-Count Lindy Hop swing dance course taught by one of Trade School Toronto organizers, Anny Chen and her dance partner, Erich Gluck. Joint advertising efforts between Hart House and Trade School Toronto made it possible for many new participants who previously had not heard about the program to experience the classes. Their clever way of using a barter system instead of real money 12 | VEUX | ISSUE 11 | BRIGHT NEW THINGS

made this educational experience available to a large and very varied group of people, especially since the offerings are made to be as accessible as possible, and to include at least one non-material item such as helping the instructor test a recipe or simply bringing a smile to class. “You feel like you’re part of the team and you’re contributing to the community,” says Mr. Saad of the barter system. Trade School Toronto had a little something for everyone! From classes on Duct Tape Creations and Natal Chart Reading to Finances 101 and Beginner French, the variety of learning opportunities drew many university students as well as other people who may not have stepped inside a traditional classroom in many years. While it’s true that you won’t be able to master the art of swing dancing or movie-making in one lesson, partaking in this program will provide you with a perfect way to sample an interest, learn about a hobby, or even explore a possible career! One skill that you certainly will be mastering is the art of smiling! The overall feedback from the students participating in the classes was that they immensely enjoyed their time and will be back for the next round of Trade school Toronto classes. Rosemary, a UofT student who belongs to a dance club on campus, heard about the Trade School through the Hart House newsletter and thought that taking part in the Lindy Hop swing dance class would be a fun way to get in more practice before her next class. Ramona, a Masters of Information student in the collaborative program in Environmental Studies, found the Toronto Trade School to

be full of “cool, unique workshops about stuff that you can’t always learn in an academic classroom.” She took part in both the Vegan Cookie Decorating class and the Natural Skin Care Workshop. What did it cost her? Not much! All she had to do was sign up to be a recipe tester for instructor Sarah E. Hoffman’s upcoming Orange Chocolate Calendar creation (which sounds delicious!) and when instructor Jenna Street requested some organic produce for her class, Ramona brought in organic carrots. Both of these classes yielded treats that Ramona was able to take home—cookies she decorated herself from Vegan Cookie Decorating and a natural bath bomb that she made in the Natural Skin Care Workshop. Ramona had a lot of fun participating in the program, stating that it made her “feel like a kid again”. We caught up with Tara after she tore up the dance floor in the Lindy Hop class. She heard about the Trade School at Hart House from a friend and researched some classes online. Though she loved them all, her background in Reiki and massage led her to explore Joanna Recine’s Reflexology Massage class as well as learn some swing dance in Lindy Hop. Tara had a great time and said that she learned a lot in both of her classes, advising that the T.S.T. is perfect for people “of all interests and income levels who think they want to try something new, but don’t want to spend money on a weekend-long workshop”. One of our editors, Wales Wong, had the opportunity to sit in as a participant in the Page after Page: Survival Strategies for Longer Writing Projects class taught by Elisabeth Oliver. “The class definitely helped me to see some of the options that are available to me whenever I am stuck on writing. Elisabeth was very helpful and knowing that the people who instruct these classes are basically doing it as a way of volunteering so that knowledge can be made accessible is inspiring. The conversations that I struck up with a lot of the other ‘classmates’ for that day were big motivators in getting me back into my writing. I’m excited for the next session held by Trade School Toronto!” Laura Sultan, the instructor for Introduction to Bead Weaving: Peyote Stitch and Introduction to Tarot classes found that her students’ excitement and her own experience with the courses at the Trade School helped further her interest in creating other learning opportunities within her field. She plans on expanding her lessons by starting a series of beadweaving and wire crochet classes using similar low-currency payment methods. Some other classes that were offered at the Trade School Toronto’s March event included: Lishai’s Intro to Spoken Word, Trina Mohan’s How to Exercise for Absolute Beginners, Karen Gottfried’s On the Open Road: Bicycle Touring 101, Fanny Martin’s Design a Festival, Rick Palidwor’s Super 8 Filmmaking, and even a class on How to Run a Workshop by Liam O’Leary who introduced Sam Saad to the Trade School. The Toronto Trade School relies heavily on the generosity of the community and their volunteer organizers, host and partner organizations and businesses, as well as teachers’ and students’ interest. If you wish to get involved as an organizer or volunteer, they can be reached at Trade.School.Toronto@gmail.com. To learn more about their upcoming events and explore other Trade Schools around the world (there may be one popping up in your area soon!), please visit www.tradeschool. coop. Spring into a Renewed You By Alissa Santiago

Spring time is a great time to sit back and re-evaluate our lives. As the earth around us comes alive again, so must we. We owe it to ourselves and the people we love to try to be the best version of ourselves. Change is difficult. Whether it is looking at how we do things or why we do them, it is important every now and then to do some critical self-reflection. We don’t have to change all at once; it can be small - like saying today I will not react so negatively to things - I will instead breathe and take a moment to think. This is what I have been trying to do with my life right now: to adopt a better perspective. My life isn’t where I would love it to be, but I believe wholeheartedly that I am making the right changes in my life to be the greatest version of who I am. I won’t quit my day job tomorrow to pursue a writer’s life; my reality is that I need my full-time job. Even better, I am learning so much on how to be a better leader and a better person that I know my journey in the corporate world isn’t done yet. What has changed for me? It is simple: I decided to care despite my stubborn self, to be inspired at the possibilities of what being a strong leader could mean to those around me. I can help others realize and see for themselves what they can accomplish. For this reason alone, I decided to stay at my job for another day, month, or year. I don’t really know what the future holds; no one does. All we can do is hope and dream and aspire to be the things we want to be. When I meditate, I sit in silence and allow my day to wash over me. In order to not feel overwhelmed, I simply let it go. I accept all the things that have passed, and am thankful for all of the wonderful things in my life. Am I where I want to be in my life in the grand scheme of things? No, but I am happy with how I am progressing. I am happy with my life and with the person I have become thus far. This is an accomplishment in itself.

So as the seasons change, we put away our winter wardrobe and take out our summer clothes, let’s commit to putting away the negative talk. For a moment, find stillness and find gratitude for the opportunity to take control of our lives and say, “What if I can?” The old saying goes, “You never know unless you try.” What I am asking you is to allow yourself to do just that - try. Try to imagine you at your greatest capacity. I’m not talking about overstretching and overcommitting; I’m talking about making the small changes in our lives to no longer just cope with what the world slings our way, but to choose a direction and move toward it. In steps, be inspired at the world of possibilities; choose to believe that you can change your life because you control the one thing that matters most - your perspective. See opportunity. See change as a gift. Be a leader in your own life. Model the behaviours you admire. Take a chance when you first thought it was impossible. Live - truly live each day - and take the little victories as you achieve them. They can lead you to the bigger ones down the road. This year I’ve made a commitment to myself to be the greatest version of me. To accept compliments as they come. To help others when I can. To allow myself to go after my dreams and goals because they are important to me. I reject regret and self-sabotage. I choose my direction because it is my responsibility to live whole-heartedly. This is something we all have the ability to do and what better time for a new you than at the start of a new season?

Life can be shiny and new for all of us if we only take the time to realize what could be and what already is. Some of us aspire to become the elite. Some may want simpler things like acceptance and worth. These things can only be realized if we stop our negative talk, the dead talk spoken by the fatalist in us all. If just for a moment, we believed in our own potential, it’ll take us farther than we can imagine. Alissa Santiago is the author of the novel “On Stand By”. She is a graduate of York University’s Glendon College and has travelled to many countries including China, France, and Japan. Sir Grumps-a-Lot By M. Andrew Patterson Illustrated by Danielle Taillefer

Once upon a time there was a knight who lived in a castle...and he was VERY grumpy.

No one knew why he was grumpy. He just was. All day long he would march through the castle GRUMP THUMP GRUMP THUMP GRUMP THUMP. He would yell at the servants. He would yell at the squires. He would even yell at the Lords and Ladies. He would yell at everyone. This had been going on for so long that everyone called him “Sir Grumpsalot”. One day, Sir Grumpsalot was marching through the castle GRUMP THUMP GRUMP THUMP GRUMP THUMP when he accidentally thumped into the King! This made the King very angry. The King told the grumpy knight, “Sir Grumpsalot! We are tired of your grumping and thumping and marching through the castle! You are to go on a quest until you can be a nice knight!” Sir Grumpsalot crossed his arms, looked at the King, and said, “No!” The King couldn’t believe his ears. “What did you say?!” the King yelled.

32 | VEUX | ISSUE 11 | BRIGHT NEW THINGS

“I don’t want to go on a stupid quest,” grumped the knight. The King yelled so loud that it shook the castle, “YOU WILL GO ON A QUEST OR I WILL TAKE AWAY YOUR KNIGHTHOOD AND THROW YOU IN THE DUNGEON!” Sir Grumpsalot did not want to be locked away in the dungeon and he didn’t want to lose his knighthood either. So he took his horse and left the castle vowing not to return until he wasn’t so grumpy. Sir Grumpsalot rode his horse uphill and downhill GRUMP CLOP GRUMP CLOP GRUMP CLOP and through steamy jungles and freezing mountains GRUMP CLOP GRUMP CLOP GRUMP CLOP. But no matter where he went, he was still grumpy. He fought fierce dragons, but he was still grumpy. ROAR! GRUMP! He battled evil knights, but he was still grumpy. CHARGE! GRUMP! He even defeated dark sorcerers. ZAP! GRUMP! No matter how many dragons, evil knights, or dark sorcerers he fought, he was still grumpy.

FICTION One day he was riding by a beautiful lake -- which he didn’t notice at all because he was so grumpy -- GRUMP CLOP GRUMP CLOP GRUMP CLOP when he heard a noise. It sounded like it came from the dark and spooky forest nearby. And it sounded like a giggle. “Why would anyone be merry in such a dark and spooky forest?” Sir Grumpsalot asked himself. So Sir Grumpsalot bravely rode into the dark and spooky forest to investigate. GRUMP CLOP GRUMP CLOP GIGGLE. Sir Grumpsalot stopped his horse. Did he just hear the giggle again? Sir Grumpsalot looked around, but didn’t see anything but trees. He shrugged his shoulders and continued on his journey. GRUMP CLOP GRUMP CLOP GIGGLE. Sir Grumpsalot stopped his horse again. Looking around he called out, “I am a brave knight! Who is that giggling?” Then he heard it again. GIGGLE. Sir Grumpsalot started to get even grumpier. He got down from his horse and drew his sword. He puffed out his chest and in his loudest and grumpiest voice he yelled, “I am Sir Grumpsalot! I challenge you! Show yourself!” Suddenly, he heard a giggle and it was right behind him! He turned but all he saw was his horse. “Who is out there?” he roared. He looked every which way he could, but couldn’t see anyone. Finally, he got back onto his horse and continued on his journey. “Someone is playing tricks on me,” he told himself. “Maybe if I ignore them, they will go away.” So, he continued on with his journey into the dark and spooky forest. GRUMP CLOP GRUMP CLOP GIGGLE...SIGH. Sir Grumpsalot tried really hard to ignore the giggles, but just when he thought they had gone away, it would happen again. GIGGLE! “Why do you bother me so?” he asked the unseen voice. “Why?” “Why are you so grumpy?” asked the voice. Sir Grumpsalot stopped his horse. Nobody had ever asked him that before. “Ummm...” said the grumpy knight. He started to speak, “Well, you see...um...I’m a knight...and...” Sir Grumpsalot stopped, scratched his helmet and tried again. “You see, being a knight is important work. And...um...er...” he stopped again. “BECAUSE!” he yelled triumphantly and continued on his way. “Well,” said the mysterious voice, “if that is the case, then... DON’T SMILE!” “I am not smiling!” Sir Grumpsalot yelled with a muffled snort. “Yes you are,” teased the voice. “Your hand is covering your mouth.” “I am not SMILING!” Sir Grumpsalot said, a teeny smile peeking out from behind his hand.

Andrew lives in Overland Park, Kansas with his wife, two kids, three cats, and two dogs. He is a librarian by day and word slinger by night. He believes that you are never too old to have a happy childhood full of questing knights and fairy princesses.

“If you aren’t smiling, then why is your frown upside down?” asked the voice. “Am not!” huffed the knight. It was a losing battle. The more he thought about not smiling, the more he couldn’t stop himself. He tried so hard that his face got red and his eyes grew very large and round. He could feel it bubbling up inside of him, higher and higher until he couldn’t keep it in anymore. And then...he laughed! He laughed so hard that he fell off his horse. He hit the ground with a thump and still he laughed. Still giggling, he got on his horse and started to ride away when he heard the voice again. “Aren’t you going to say ‘Thank You’?” the voice asked. “Um...” said Sir Grumpsalot looking around. “Thank you?” “Up here, silly,” teased the voice from above him. Sir Grumpsalot looked up and saw the most beautiful fairy princess that he had ever seen. “Wh--where did you come from?” stammered the knight. The fairy princess laughed, “I’ve been here the entire time. You were just too grumpy to see me.” With a smile, she gently floated to the ground. Sir Grumpsalot got down from his horse. He was embarrassed because he was so grumpy and mean to this beautiful fairy. He got down on one knee and said, “Beautiful fairy princess, please accept my most sincere apology for being such a rude and grumpy knight. Let me take you from this dark and spooky forest to my home in the beautiful castle. There we can be married and live happily ever after.” The fairy princess smiled at Sir Grumpsalot. “Of course, but you must promise me that we will visit my friends here in the forest. For if you look around, you will see that it isn’t such a dark and spooky place.” Sir Grumpsalot looked around and saw that what the fair princess said was true. The whole forest was bright, happy, and beautiful. “Let me guess,” he said with a smile, “I couldn’t see it because I was so grumpy.” “Of course,” said the fairy princess with a laugh. So, Sir Grumpsalot and the fairy princess rode off to the castle, laughing and telling jokes. GIGGLE CLOP SNICKER CLOP GIGGLE CLOP. When Sir Grumpsalot and the fairy princess stood before the King and told him what had happened, the King made a royal decree that day that Sir Grumpsalot would henceforth be called Sir Smilesalot. The following day Sir Smilesalot and the fairy princess were married. The now happy knight lived up to his promise and took his fairy princess to the forest every week to see her friends and Sir Smilesalot was never grumpy again.

Lunar New Year:

Year of the Snake Text and Photographs by Vivien Hoang

68 | VEUX | ISSUE 11 | BRIGHT NEW THINGS

Shops are filled to the brim with displays of lucky trinkets, cakes and treats. Impromptu flower markets spring up in parking lots and under awnings. Flower buds are symbols of a new beginning; traditionally, apricot and peach blossoms are preferred, and it is considered extremely lucky if your flowers bloom on New Year’s Day. Where it is legal, fire crackers are lit and fireworks light up the night skies. New Year often involves visits to the temple, cleaning the house on New Year’s Eve to get rid of any bad luck from the previous year, and cooking many of the traditional foods, including banh chung – a sticky rice cake. For children, the New Year means new clothes as well as the red envelopes containing “lucky money” gifts from their parents and elders. Good wishes and words of wisdom accompany the gifts.

On February 10, 2013 millions of people around the world celebrated the Lunar New Year and ushered in the Year of the Snake. In the United States, one of the largest Vietnamese celebrations of the New Year occurred in Orange County, California. For some communities, the Lunar New Year celebrations are the largest festivities of the year and can last a week or more. Many of the rituals and traditions are centered around getting rid of the old, and ushering in new good fortunes.

Many organizations sponsor “lion” dances, where two performers working together in a lion costume dance to the rhythmic drumming. The dance is supposed to scare away evil and bring good fortune and of course, you can help your own fortunes by offering the lion lucky money! My own New Year experience was truly blessed: I was able to spend it with family I had not seen in years and was surrounded by much love and laughter. Here’s hoping the rest of the year is just as fortunate!
