We received an abundance of amazing submissions this issue. So many that we decided to do our first ever TWO issue special. It was only fitting since our theme is “Masks” and “Monsters”. October brings upon us Halloween - complete with all the weird, spooky, and kooky. In this issue, you’ll find the dramatic lead singer, the white harlequin, the deranged doll, the genteel maiden, and the unhinged geisha among the cast of characters. Embedded in each of us is a side that is hidden behind a mask, but when we truly are ourselves, who do we become? You might find a part of yourself within these pages. With a person’s journey to find one’s self, do we put on masks to face society or do our masks reveal our true selves? We hope that you enjoy our Volume One - Masks and find the beauty in the ambiguous and obscure exteriors that we portray to others.

Serendipity was what brought me to Jeanine Moss and Frankie of J and the 9s and what resulted in me dancing around my living room while rocking out to her band’s riffs and vocals. She was a model being featured in a beauty editorial (VEUX magazine - August 2013 - Issue 13, pages 6-9) and I needed some paperwork signed. There’s no such thing as anonymity in our overshare world and it wasn’t long before I found Moss (otherwise known as J9 of J and the 9s) on Facebook, liked her band page, and made first contact. I wasn’t sure she’d get back to me – after all, from what I saw of her profile, she was glamorously jetsetting back and forth between New York City and London, recording in studios, and working on different sets. But she responded within 24 hours. I was impressed – sometimes I don’t even manage to get back to my own mother in that period of time. And J9 was warm, funny, courteous and interesting. It was a no-brainer to collaborate on a bigger project. Collaborations seem to come naturally to J9. In her early musical days, she worked with numerous producers in the electronic music genre, writing and recording vocals over their tracks. But these projects often left J9 with very little semblance of control over how her work was ultimately used. A move back to NYC allowed her to find work as an assistant recording engineer and as a backing vocalist with Chubby Checker, performing with him whenever he was in New York City and was a featured vocalist on his track “The Fly”. She kept networking and another collaboration, this time on a rock track – showed J9 just what she was capable of. “We [J9 and her producer] started working on the track, in a completely different way than I ever had before. Completely spontaneous, and off-the-cuff. All the words that were coming out of my mouth were very tongue-in-cheek, half singing and half talking. I was surprised as to what came out, but went with it. Nothing happened with the track, so I decided to take charge of my own music.” After years of letting others dictate, J9 was ready to take the reins. In 2011, J9 began putting the pieces together for her own band, a move she felt was logical given her past experience and training in London in vocals and music production. She originally wanted to have an allgirl group but was having trouble finding the right members. She never stopped songwriting while she was searching, and relished her new writing style which involved no pre-meditation. MASKS & MONSTERS | ISSUE 14 Vol. 1 | VEUX | 23


J9 met Frankie in August 2011 when he sent her a recording of him playing lead guitar over one of her songs. “When he came in to audition I was hoping he would be as cool of a person as he was a player. And he was. Like many relationships, we started out well, and unlike many relationships, we continued on very well. We became great friends and writing partners. We spent the next year writing and refining the music and playing lots of live shows.” J and the 9s (a play on words based on J9’s first name Jeanine or Jea-nine aka J9) was born. J9 and Frankie’s successful partnership may in part be due to their inherently organic and live-in-the-now style of writing and working. They both also have similar musical inspirations, citing Led Zeppelin (a band which Frankie’s father played for him while he was still in the womb), David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Iggy Pop, Cream and Joan Jett as well as the new rock sounds of Lenny Kravitz, The White Stripes, Jet, The Strokes, Prince and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. J9 noted, “They all inspired me musically, because not only were they all so strong, but intense, self-assured, sexy, cool, and certain of who they were. No one tells them how, they just do. No one was going to tell me how anymore, I was going to “do” too. Every one of us are puppets from one time to another, in one situation to another. I didn’t want to be that anymore and I wasn’t going to be.” Both Frankie and J9 have extensive musical training and backgrounds. Frankie was born into a family of musicians, and had a drum set and a guitar by the time he was four years old. As a child, he was fascinated by the Zeppelin film “The Song Remains The Same”. At nine, he was learning bass guitar, and as a rebellious teen, he rejected his parents’ rock ‘n roll for classical piano. His guitar and bass laid neglected for years. Then one day, he rewatched “The Same” film and made it a personal goal to learn all the guitar solos. Rock’s siren call had him ensnared again. J9 started with the classics and jazz: piano, flute, tenor sax and bassoon all before she was a teenager. As an adolescent, she delved into rock guitar, bass and drums while also becoming involved in her high school’s musical theatre program. She received a bachelor’s degree in theatre performance and went on to study vocals and music production in London. It should be no great surprise then that their live shows are big and theatrical. “As a child, I was always in musical theatre groups and always loved making my own costumes. My main inspiration comes from a single wig. The first one that enables me to see a full costume concept, I buy, and build a costume idea around it. Another addition, and integral part of our shows is the use of the cordless microphone. I stumbled upon it by accident; a venue had it as an option, and I took it. It was great. I had the freedom to break that 4th wall. To run up to people, slide around them on the floor, jump onto chairs, run around the band, down the length of a bar...I haven’t looked back since.”

Show days sound like controlled chaos. There are “...always last minute details being literally put together right before we are about to get on stage. My inspiration for costumes and makeup sometimes comes to me last minute. As far as pre-show rituals are concerned, it’s all about making sure everything is in check. That all of the paint that I would need is there, all of the glitter, feathers, wig, wig comb, stockings, and bobby pins are packed. It’s the little things that count! There’s always a trail of glitter and feathers coming from my suitcase wherever I go. I used to clean it up, but now I just leave it, because I think, if it’ll make me smile, perhaps it’ll make someone else as well.” “Ask me what happens during the show, half the time I can’t remember it. I get so lost in the performance; I only know it really happened via video and testimony. I play guitar on a couple of songs, mainly to catch my breath! There’s never a dull moment. But, despite all of this, everyone’s favorite part of the show seems to be when the flute makes its appearance.” Move over, jazz flute. Punk flute is here now. For Frankie, playing at Madison Square Garden would be a dream come true; J9 aspires for the Glastonbury Music Festival in England. But first – baby steps. They have just recorded their first EP and shot their first music video. “We are looking into management, licensing and distribution companies, and are talking with radio promoters now. We want to go on tour and build momentum with our music. In and outside of the U.S. Anything that will help us along that path, we will do. It is our baby, and like any proud parents, we want everyone to see and meet our pride and joy… It’s really cool to have even one person come up to us, say that they enjoyed the music and show, and had fun. FlockFlockFlock Crinkles and Creativity By ViVien Hoang

In a world of silks and satins, fabrics and furs, Jennifer Henry’s dresses stand out. They crinkle and shimmer, or rustle softly together like sheaves of paper in a summer’s breeze. You would do a double-take – “Is that dress made of…?” – Yes, sandwich wrappers. Or cellophane. Maybe tissue paper or gift wrapping. There’s probably plenty of tape holding the whole outfit together. Where many designers are content to merely experiment with cuts or colours, Henry has stepped outside of traditional fabrics to examine how unconventional materials can be made into wearable art. Henry was always particular about what she wore, even as a child, but it wasn’t until she was older that she began buying and altering vintage clothes for herself and her friends and fashion became an obsession that surpassed her other interests. She launched a small online shop and microboutique and it was in 2009 when a friend asked her to collaborate on a holiday-themed photoshoot that Henry began working with alternative material. She created three dresses made of gift wrapping paper and bows, but her amber coloured cellophane tutu dress garnered the most attention. Soon, Henry was inundated with requests for custom created pieces for friends who wanted truly one-of-a-kind outfits for holiday parties and Lady Gaga shows. Even with all the demands, her enthusiasm hasn’t waned. “The reactions that the people get while wearing my pieces were so exciting that I never really considered transitioning away from cellophane. It’s so sparkly and pretty and comes in so many different colors, patterns and textures. I can achieve so many varied looks manipulating the same material in different ways that I never get bored of working with it! And when I want to create a matte look, tissue paper could be used with the same techniques and has been a wonderful and flexible medium.” Because of her choice of material, Henry cannot use traditional needle and thread to hold her pieces together either. “I think my favorite material is the one that you don’t see the tape when the pieces are finished. I use only clear packing tape and double stick tape. By molding and piecing it together I can create very strong, extremely dynamic yet still light and flexible pieces. It’s the foundation of all my pieces and they wouldn’t be the same if I used something else!” Thus, FlockFlockFlock was born in November 2009. “My first creative medium was language so choosing the words to represent my other artistic endeavors is very important to me. I like words that have multiple meanings and the word “flock” has three very distinct meanings including: a congregation of like-minded people, the act of animals moving together instinctually in a group and the cheap artificial coating applied to objects to make them appear to be a luxurious velvet surface.” MASKS & MONSTERS | ISSUE 14 Vol. 1 | VEUX | 27


People seem innately drawn to Henry’s creations and from a wide cross-section as well. “People either want to touch it or take a picture of it, but usually both! The pieces have such an impact on all sorts of people. Old men, babies, girls who want me to make them one for their birthday party, art collectors who want to add one to their galleries. The diversity of the people who respond to my crinkles is really remarkable. But the creative professionals are always the people who have the most to say, they either want to know all the details on how I create the pieces or they want to incorporate my creations into their own project.” Her client list is impressive; since FlockFlockFlock’s inception, she has created over 200 unique handmade designs for a variety of patrons and charities including the LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) Costume Council, Bravo TV, TLC Sister Wives, Hyde Bellagio, Nobu Hotel Caesars Palace, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas P3 Studio Artist-In-Residence Program, Make-A-Wish, and the March of Dimes. Henry has also participated in high profile national design competitons, most recently Project SUBWAY produced by Subway Resturants at NYFW S/S 2014. Crafted from hand dyed paper sandwich wrappers, napkins, plastic bags and straws Henry’s party dress and gown impressed the celebrity judging panel including America’s Got Talent judge and Spice Girl, Mel B., Project Runway alum Althea Harper and Olympic Gold Medalist Nastia Liukin event’s host, Jared Fogle, The Subway Guy. Henry draws most of her inspiration from the world and people around her. Maybe a friend started a garden with flowers, or posted photographs of their cat, or shared an image of a sunset. Everything can be the seed for the next project. Her dresses and outfits are shaped first by general mood: “Honestly, I’ve never struggled to find inspiration … Sometimes I’ll see a picture of someone’s homemade smoothie and think, ‘Pink is the right color for this next gown.’ My only real routine is that I wake up pretty early, eat breakfast and get to work. Even if I don’t have anything specific planned for the day, I have the urge to get started early.”

It would be easy for Henry to rely on the novelty of her dresses to get her from one season to the next, but her own inner artisan is constantly striving. Henry’s willingness and need to push boundaries and concepts are key motivators for her, especially when the fashion industry can be challenging to break into. “No matter how much I like what I created before, I’ll always be working hard to improve. Every once in a while I’m really proud of the inventiveness and detailed craftsmanship of what I’ve made and that’s a kind of satisfaction I never really expected to get from ‘crinkling’. The most challenging aspect of my work is my own demand to keep growing and changing. I’m always trying to make things more stable, more beautiful, with better construction and new materials. I’m always trying to learn and invent so that the next thing is more compelling than the last.” Henry’s future plans involve more learning and more collaborations – maybe even projects with a more traditional fashion house. “I’m working so much, creating so many new things as my art evolves that I really feel anything is possible in the future, but I’m not focused on any destination in particular. Every opportunity to create that I encounter comes with its own challenges and rewards, I try to do the most I can with each one and in the end they always lead me to my next project.” You can find out more about Jennifer Henry at www.flockflockflock.com .
