2 | VEUX | ISSUE 19 - 3rd ANNIVERSARY | SYNCHRONICITY

Letter from the Editor In its most basic definition, the term synchronicity refers to the meaningful coincidences in life and the world around us. When encountering synchronicity, some people see it as the universe’s sign of providing guidance while others view it as a simple coincidence that occurs without causation. Regardless of one’s interpretation, synchronicity is often manifested in the creation of art. That is why this theme is such a perfect fit for our three-year-anniversary issue! Harmony and unity between artists (photographers, models, designers) and various materials (set, wardrobe, make-up) is essential for the creation of all of the work featured in VEUX. With each issue, we aim to celebrate these values, but we are also proud to highlight coincidental “perfect moments” and bring attention to “stories of a lifetime”. During this anniversary issue, synchronicity’s root word “sync” is also front-andcenter in my mind as I take a moment to reflect on the strong bond and unity that I share with my fellow editors, Vivien and Wales. It has been such a great privilege to work with them and learn from them and their admirable strengths. I’m thankful for my co-editors’ support over the years, both as friends and business partners. This past month, I found myself relying on them more than ever as I took a page out of last month’s issue and embarked on an exploration and discovery journey through Europe. One thing I’ve learned from them is that a partnership is always a give-andtake, but it’s not just a 50-50 process. Working on a team and creating art means many things in many situations - from giving a 110% of yourself to a project to letting others take the reins and sometimes just being the missing 1% of the puzzle. The three of us created VEUX from a dream and desire to be creative and share art with the world. We would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting us over the past three years. As well, we would love to have you join us on our journey forward by continuing to read our free online issues (or purchasing a print copy for your coffee table), spreading the word about our magazine to your friends through word of mouth and social media, or perhaps even embarking on your own creative journey by submitting your artwork, a written piece, or a fashion editorial! Our October issue theme is The Dark and The Light (deadline: September 22nd), while for December we turn to Glitter & Glam (deadline: November 17th). More information at www.veuxmag.com. Happy Three Years, VEUX!

FEATURE Without a doubt, The Stop’s Night Market is one of the more coveted and highly anticipated food festivals in Toronto. Delicious food and drink combined with the intimate setting inside the laneway of Honest Ed’s (a Toronto landmark that will sadly close down in 2017) created quite a memorable evening for those who attended. The first Night Market was held in 2012 to rave reviews from all who attended. 2014 marks the third year of this event and the demand could not be higher. Within the first thirty minutes of being released online, all 1600 tickets were sold to Toronto’s hungriest foodies. Successfully purchasing a ticket almost felt like winning the golden ticket to the chocolate factory! The event also brought together many of Toronto’s designers to create one-of-a-kind food stalls for the food vendors. The inspiration for these designs would come from The Stop Community Food Centre’s key mission, which is to increase access to nutritious food for communities everywhere. As an additional challenge, the designers were encouraged to use sustainable and reclaimed materials as well as find ways to repurpose the carts after the event. Each stall would be judged by a four-person jury from Designlines, a quarterly magazine by Azure. The jury included Joshua Brasse, industrial designer and founder of ideacious.com; Tory Healy, editor of Designlines; Janna Levitt, founding partner of LGA Architectural Partners; and Jason Stroud, the designer and owner of the Toronto studio/workshop Stroudfoot. At the end of the night, awards were given for Best in Show, Most Creative and Best Representation of The Stop’s mission.

This year, HOK Pinata won the vote for the People’s Choice award via Facebook voting. The judges chose the Brothers Dressler’s cart for Splendido as Most Creative, and JSL’s cart for The Stop won the Big Picture award. The Best in Show was awarded to The Galette Girls’ for Design Build Grow. Congratulations to all the winners! Despite the competition, credit should be given to all the designers who worked hard on the

designs to promote the mission of The Stop Community Food Centre. For $65, all the attendees had an opportunity to sample the unlimited food and drink from 30+ food and beverage vendors. Part of the ticket price also went towards many of the programs provided by The Stop. These programs cover initiatives such as their drop-in meals program, a healthy food bank, local food markets, cooking programs, and much more. Later in the evening, live and interactive music was provided by local bands such as the Heavyweights Brass Band, Flamenguitos del Norte, Ventanas and Rambunctious. However, there was no stage for people to watch the bands. These musicians performed while marching through the crowd and even took some suggestions from the public! This created a unique atmosphere that distinguishes the Night Market from any other food event in the city. I was lucky enough to attend the Partner Reception which took place an hour before the event was available to the general public. This provided me with a wonderful opportunity to sample the food and take pictures of all the stalls before the rush of hungry foodies. For those with regular tickets, lineups began more than an hour ahead of the gates opening. Many were eagerly standing in line and came with nothing more than an open heart and an empty stomach. Forty-five minutes into the reception, a light patter of rain started coming down over the event. While this did not compare to the brief torrential downpour on the previous day, this did not hamper the mood or the hunger of all the foodies in attendance. Among the many things I tasted that night:

Gusto 101’s take on a kale salad was my first dish of the evening. The kale was finely shredded and mixed with currants, pine nuts, pecorino, parmigiano and tossed with a lemon vinaigrette. The dish was a well-balanced combination of nuttiness, saltiness and tanginess but also light enough to get the appetite going for the rest of the evening.

Another favourite was the twenty-four hour braised pork belly with miso glaze and watermelon from Small Town Food Co. Pork. The fruit seemed like an odd pairing at first, but once you bite into the skewer, you are treated to a marriage between the juicy, refreshing watermelon and the crispy, greasy braised pork. It was definitely something that should be going on summer menus at Toronto’s restaurants.

Farmhouse Tavern is one of my favourite restaurants in Toronto, and naturally I was looking forward to what they would be serving at the Night Market. On the menu, they were serving trout gravlax with marinated and smoked eggplant. I liked the balance between the pickled and savoury flavours in the trout, which also paired well with the crunchy eggplant. Knowing that they expanded with a new restaurant (The Farmer’s Daughter), I asked why they weren’t both there. The chef responded by saying that they like to balancing things out by alternating events. Definitely looking forward to trying out The Farmer’s Daughter in the near future!

Gusto 101’s refreshingly light kale salad

There were many dishes that I had tried that night, and not enough room to cover in one article. However, I wanted to at least mention the beef with chimichurri sauce served by Jamie Kennedy. Tender beef from Grandview Farms was griddled on a hot plate and then brushed with a generous amount of green herb sauce. In a sea of complex techniques, it’s easy to forget that you can get so much pleasure from simple ingredients. The Stop’s Night Market is without a doubt one of the more memorable food events available in Toronto. It was also a privilege to be one of many who contributed to The Stop’s mission to make food more accessible. Aside from the brief period of rain, I really enjoyed the food from the city’s talented chefs and am looking forward to attending next year’s event. Here’s hoping for sunny weather!

Cupcakes galore!

When Douglas Heung is not keeping up to date on Toronto’s food scene, you might find him getting ready for Mud Hero! Once that’s done, he hopes to get back to travelling.
