Letter from the Editor What does minimalism mean to you? There is a sense of freedom that comes with being able to bring fashion, words, and photography back to the basics. Conversely, the act also presents a challenge. After all, just as stories are embellished with pretty adjectives, the fashion world loves to push the envelope with extravagant garments, heavier makeup, and more flash. So what happens when we dare you to take all that away? This month, our team asked you to bare your soul by showing us your artwork in its purest form, and we were thrilled to see that all of our contributors stepped up to the challenge! The editors greatly enjoyed the unique takes on this theme—from hundred-word stories to fashion and makeup editorials that celebrated the “less is more” philosophy. In this month’s offering, spread across two issues, you’ll find simple designs, fresh faces, and creative takes on the minimalist movement. We also have a lovely feature with actress Daniella Alonso. In perfect unity with this month’s theme, she leaves behind the glitz and glam of Hollywood and shows us a fresh and relatable journey of an actress. Next month, we invite you to travel the world with us in our “Lost & Found” issue. August brings about four years of VEUX Magazine—and we’re partying with an open theme and a cover contest. In October, we are excited to celebrate and showcase “Diversity”. Check out our website www.veuxmag.com for more information.

Steps Forward: Daniella Alonso By Vivien Hoang Photography by J Squared

I first saw Daniella Alonso on the NBC television series Revolution. She played Nora Clayton, a tough, no-nonsense rebel. What drew me to the character of Nora was that she was a strong female character who was also human and vulnerable; she was a badass, but not a one dimensional caricature. Nora was also a well-written leading role that was played by a Latina actress, in a time when diversity in Hollywood is still sadly lacking. Alonso brought a nuanced portrayal that was also fun and dynamic; you get the impression that Alonso has always been a person with drive and purpose. But she’s also friendly, smart and savvy. It was easy to forget that this was an interview, and not two friends catching up. “I was really lucky because I grew up in New York City, so I could go to auditions as a kid. It was so much easier because I had so many opportunities available.” But Alonso knew the value of networking, and it was through a friend of a friend who knew a manager who knew someone at the world-renowned Ford modeling agency that she landed a meeting. She started in their teen modeling division, which soon led to commercials, and then indie film appearances. Like many young actors and actresses, she balanced this with school. And a part-time job. “I personally love to be busy! It was non-stop all the time and it was great. Those eight years were crazy.” After Alonso graduated with a Communications degree from Marymount Manhattan College, she was ready to devote herself full time to her acting. “It was a dream! I grew up watching movies and loving movies. I thought I was going to making all these films!” However, Hollywood reality and stereotypes soon stepped in.

“Someone who is strong. Courageous and independent. But also someone who is loving and supportive.”

dustry is attempting to represent all kinds of people. I see it – I’ve played a doctor, I’ve played a lawyer, I’ve played a rebel. A mom, a soldier. I’ve been very lucky.” But on the industry as a whole, it’s easy for an actress to come up against a wall. “You can always see the same roles. The best friend. The girlfriend. The comic relief. But then you see Gina Rodriguez from Jane the Virgin – that’s amazing and fantastic, and I’m so happy for her. But there aren’t many roles like that and so there’s a lot of room for growth.” “But when you’re young and Latin, there were really only three roles that I could go out for: the pregnant teenager, the gangbanger, or the maid. That was it, when I first started. Every audition was that.”

However, don’t expect Alonso to just sit back and wait for this growth to happen. “My sister and I are writing now. You have to be proactive. It’s a lot easier now to grab cameras and friends and just shoot. Be creative and do it on your own. Don’t wait for people to write the roles for you.”

Alonso admits, “It was hard. I wanted to play all these characters. It was a little crushing at first, but things have changed over the years. I feel like we’ve taken so many steps forward, but then you have reminders that things aren’t changing, and they aren’t that different.” To Alonso’s point, this year’s Academy Awards were dominated by white actors, actresses, writers, and directors.

And what kind of role would she write for herself? “Someone who is strong. Courageous and independent. But also someone who is loving and supportive.” She draws her inspiration from her grandmother as well as from her past characters. “Revolution spoiled me. If it doesn’t have action right now, it’s disappointing! I would really love to fight, climb walls! Nora was take-charge. She could save herself. She did the saving.”

But she also recognizes the strides that have been made. “It’s pilot season now and I’m going through a lot of scripts, and almost every script I’ve read so far has a transgendered character or a person of color, so you’re inspired! This in-

But don’t assume that Alonso is all about the guns and the glory. “I miss the beautiful indies that really tell a story. That’s the kind of stuff that I want to see and make.” But until Alonso returns to her indie roots, you can catch her on the big screen

in the upcoming Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, as the General Manager of Las Vegas’ Wynn hotel, where main character Paul Blart, played by Kevin James, goes as part of a mall cop convention. “We basically had free rein of the Wynn and it was so much fun! It’s a beautiful hotel and we got to shoot there. Of course, Kevin James is one of the funniest people on earth. It’s a family film and I think people are really going to enjoy it.” Whether Alonso is playing a hardened career soldier or a woman running one of the biggest hotels in the world, her process to prepare is similar. “I have a coach I work with. I talk it out with him, who I see this character as, and their relationships with everybody in the script. I like to rehearse a lot with him but then I can let everything go and just be in the moment, because I know I have it all within me and now I can just have fun.” Alonso is clearly having fun, since she just wrapped up filming on an additional three movies and was working for nearly three years straight. So what would she have to say to an actress just starting out in the industry? “Don’t take things too personally. I came from a crazy family where you couldn’t have a lot of ego, but I’ve seen friends where the rejections really hurt them. 99.99% of the time, it has nothing to do with you. So just keep doing what you’re doing, as long as you’re happy with the work you did. That’s all that matters.” You can catch Daniella Alonso in Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 coming out in theatres on April 17th, 2015.

Face with a Heart:

An Interview with Makeup Artist Chris Scott By Vivien Hoang

Chris Scott, M.A., is the creator of the San Francisco-based makeup school, Makeup Gourmet. He is the author of the Cosmetic Counter Survival Guide: How to Buy the Right Skincare and Makeup (2003) and the 2014 book Face with a Heart: Mastering Authentic Beauty Makeup which will be launching on Amazon on June 2nd, 2015. Our editor sat down with Scott to learn his story, discuss his philosophy and pick up some makeup tips.

Early Days It seemed destined that Scott would end up in the makeup business. He was always around the stuff, first working in theatre since he was 12 years old and then graduating to run his own theater company. But the theatre gig was something Scott did at night; he would need a day job to support him. “I started doing beauty makeup during the day. I took a 2-day retail makeup class and was sent out to be a promotional assistant for different brands. This got my feet wet and gave me some good brand diversity as I worked for quite a few brands at first.” Scott discovered he had a natural eye for makeup and it did not go unnoticed. “I was scouted and hired by Chanel as a national makeup artist. Chanel trained me intensively and I gained a whole new skill set. From there I travelled and trained with Chanel. I soon became the teacher and was helping other budding makeup artists learn their craft and the ropes of retail makeup.”

Teaching No doubt Scott used his experience at Chanel to find his second calling: teaching. During our lesson, he was patient, and engaging. Sure, I worked in fashion, but I’d always left the smokey eyes and the contouring to the professionals. Under Scott’s careful tutelage, I found myself carefully but confidently applying eyeshadow and liner to create a polished, everyday look. It was startlingly easy with the right instruction.

“Every application matters. Every client matters. Everyone you meet matters. Build your database, create a community, and always ask someone what you can do for them.”

Scott mused, “I offer training because I am fortunate in that I am able to teach others. There are a lot of great makeup artists in the world. They can show you what they are doing, but actually passing that skill into another’s muscle memory requires a different skill set. With so many of my clients, they craved this expertise and it only felt 100% natural to show them how. I feel the most rewarded when I can pass what I know onto someone else.” Scott knows that in-studio lessons and his books aren’t the only ways to teach. “What do I want? I want to be able to help anyone at any time. With the internet, it is possible to be anywhere the internet is 24/7 for whoever needs you. I have and am creating more online tutorial video courses to help everyone get the products and expertise they require.” Scott himself has benefitted from good teachers. “I have had three mentors in my life who helped me move along in my growth and skill set. Guy Lento, once National Director of Makeup for Chanel, took me under his wing and got me to see and appreciate fashion and makeup. Raul Francisco showed me the art of specificity, which is key in all my makeup. Roque Cozzette passed on his unique airbrush makeup sensibilities to me and has made all the difference when I use airbrush makeup. My book cover is an homage to Kevyn Aucoin.” And now the torch has passed to Scott as the mentor. I asked him what advice he would give to a fledgling makeup artist, expecting a response about brushes or pigmentation. Instead, he gave me a much broader view, one which many makeup artists may not consider. “Every application matters. Every client matters. Everyone you meet matters. Build your database, create a community, and always ask someone what you can do for them.”

Philosophy Every makeup artist has a philosophy about wearing makeup and about how to apply makeup. Scott’s “Authentic Beauty Makeup” philosophy is “that makeup can make us be seen more clearly.” It is something he feels quite passionate about. “As I worked with many artists in a retail environment, my overwhelming observation was how excessive the amount of makeup that was being put ‘on’ people’s faces. It literally grossed me out when I saw some artists just plow someone’s face with product in the name of beauty. Part of the retail game is to sell as much as possible, so of course the employees are going to try to get as much product on the client as possible. In a way, it was all about the sell, and the more you sold, the better makeup artist you were in the eyes of the company. Fortunately, this attitude began to shift slightly as a more natural look became preferred. But still, the bigger the sell, the better the artist.” Scott wanted to be more critical. More wasn’t always better. “From very early on, I always asked ‘why’ with every step of the application. Give me some good reasons to use blush and I will with a purposeful intent. Because I was so fortunate to work with great photographers, fashion stylists, art directors, I quickly developed my personal sense of beauty makeup. My driving passion is always ‘why’ and what is the most economical way to achieve the greatest result. As a working artist, you are expected to apply perfect makeup in a timely fashion. I streamlined and systemized my order of application into a method that works every time.”

“Makeup can make us be seen more clearly.”

The Book For those who are not so lucky to have a personalized lesson with Scott, his 2014 book Face with a Heart is a visual, step-by-step guide for achieving a classic and daily wearable look. “My criteria for this method is that it translates to every face and every lifestyle. There are whole other sets of variables that make the look either natural, balanced, dramatic or trendy. However, at the core of the application is a way to maximize each person’s attractions with the least amount of time and product. My book and philosophy speak to understanding your anatomy, the intensity of your natural features, the intensity and temperature of your wardrobe and accessories, and considering all of these elements of you, design and apply a makeup that incorporates all these variables so we see you more clearly.” For Scott, this truly feels like the beginning of a new phase. “I had a dream two nights ago and Oprah and I were out for a walk. She asked to see my book and the rest is to be fulfilled.” We hope your dreams come true too! Chris Scott’s book Face with a Heart: Mastering Authentic Beauty Makeup will have its official Amazon launch on June 2nd, 2015.
