Letter from the Editor For those of us in the Northern hemisphere, June brings with it the end of the school year, the start of summer holidays, warmer weather and the adventures that accompany it. We were inspired by summerhood memories of riding bicycles with friends down forest trails, jumping into the neighbourhood creek, and going on roadtrips with our families. It’s pretty easy to reminisce about such idyllic times, coloured perhaps by rose-tinted glasses of age and distance - but all the more reason to be inspired by our LOST & FOUND theme. As adults, I think it’s easy to lose the sense joy and sense of adventure of finding the unbeaten path and walking it - just to see where it leads you. But our contributors rose up to the challenge and gave us gorgeous images from deserts and warehouses, exotic locales and houses “just down the street”. To find ourselves again, we are reminded that sometimes it means losing ourselves in the first place. We would also like to remind you of our August Anniversary issue! We will be celebrating four years of publishing at VEUX Magazine. It’s an OPEN theme, so flex those creative muscles and get involved in our annual cover contest! Deadline to submit is July 17, 2015.

Imagine waking up from the dream of childhood and feeling like a lost soul. Then, a beacon of realization shines down, and you understand a certain truth: Life is the journey in which we seek and find our true selves while experiencing the joy of living in the search. Sarah Kay Oplinger experienced that awakening, and set herself upon the path of self-discovery, seeking illumination and healing. To date, she has worked with children as a summer camp counselor in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California and eventually led classes in outdoor education. Offered a job as a Bear Security Guard at Yosemite National Park, Oplinger spent summer nights shooing bears out of designated camping areas as humans slumbered without care. (Please don’t try this at home, special training is required!) During the day, she practiced rock climbing and mastered the art of fishing. Along the way she found herself to be a competent leader with a strong sense of purpose, and more self-confidence than she thought possible. With that, also came dreams of becoming an artist. A chance meeting with a local jeweler led to an internship where Oplinger learned the art of silversmithing. Torch in hand, she embraced this new skill with passion and was soon producing handmade items and began selling her creations online at shows and galleries. “

“Follow your heart is what the silversmith told me,” said Oplinger. “I learned how to morph junk into jewelry and the process of upcycling became an important aspect of my work.” Oplinger recently found the way back to her childhood home in Winslow, Arizona. Childhood stomping grounds became a source of materials for upcycling when she found sheets of copper in the arroyos of the high plains desert surrounding her home. “Those old sheets of copper that I found were very thin, and not like anything I had worked with before,” said Oplinger. “They were very malleable which inspired me to create folded pieces that I then treated with my hand-collected desert salts.” The resulting necklace has the look of weathered copper with a mottled texture of copper and turquoise patina. Named The Willow Wash Collection, each piece has unique characteristics, lending the collection a sense of conforming non-conformity. Seeking materials for upcycling led to her father’s storage shed. Hidden therein were copper rain gutters from Winslow’s Lincoln School, built in 1897. In 1970, it was razed to make way for a new school. Her father participated in the demolition process, using some of the salvaged materials to construct the family homestead. The pieces of copper were forgotten about until she happened to spot them peeking out from under an old tarp. Permission to use them in her upcycling project was granted. Experimenting with reproducing natural forms in her artwork, she cut leaf shapes from the old Lincoln School copper. “I am inspired by the leaves of trees growing on the riverbanks where I fish. It is fascinating, creating such a juxtaposition - the weightlessness of leaves and the heft of a copper leaf. The old copper melts easily when I apply the torch and has a beautiful pink color that is fun to work with,” described Oplinger. This series of necklaces and earrings is known as the Lincoln Leaf Collection.
When the copper cathedral on Winslow’s St. Joseph’s Catholic Church was renovated, Oplinger was gifted with several pieces of copper trimmings. “I especially enjoy designing earrings from the cathedral copper,” she said. “They make a chiming sound that is quite lovely, and I make them in a shape that reminds me of an old church organ.” Named The Cathedral Collection, “Each piece is made with mindfulness of the source and the intent of creating each piece with honor.” With a growing reputation in town for using scraps to create art, more upcycling items have found their way to her workshop. Recently, unused copper wire inspired The Bramble Collection. “This is the masculine counterpart to the Lincoln Collection. If you look closely, you can see the pattern where my torch creates the stick form from the copper wire used to create a jointed structure, much like a tangled bird’s nest,” said Oplinger. The jewelry, however, is loose enough that it conforms to the contour of the neck. “While creating this collection I explored the flow of joints in plants,” she continued. “I became aware that most seemingly stiff joints are actually flexible if examined from a different perspective!” “Each piece of copper I find has a unique reaction to being worked with the torch. Some copper is stiff and sharp, almost exploding when exposed to the flame, while other copper pieces are more agreeable to the process of being shaped and redefined by fire,” she explained. The unexpected reactions make for an exciting experience every time she sits at the workbench, and each new line is an adventure in creativity that feeds her soul. No wonder she dons hiking boots and scours the desert looking for lost treasures to upcycle into an artistic rendering, celebrating her love for nature.

Many artists struggle with the “business” side of the process but Oplinger did not let that stop her. With an eternal thirst for learning, she found direction through reading and research, and learned skills such as writing, following a business plan, developing a website and working with a gallery owner. Making contact with clothing designer Tawny Star, owner of Black and Birch (a retail clothing store with branches in Sedona and Flagstaff, Arizona), bore a fruitful collaboration. She is a featured artist, creating fashionable accessories and jewelry and fulfilling her dream of using upcycled materials to create treasured artwork and honoring the earth in her own special way. Her tale is a reminder to us all that what is lost can be found again. See Oplinger’s current and past pieces at www.bysarahkay.com.
