Letters from the Editor Living in Toronto, Canada for over a decade has made me more conscious and attuned to diversity, therefore it was a meaningful choice for us to select this as October’s theme.

Veux Magazine’s home base is also located here, but we’ve never limited our reach and engagement to within the Canadian borders. The internet’s accessibility and convenience has not only allowed submitters to contact us from thousands of miles away, but it has also exposed us to a variety of perspectives, ideas, and cultures.

Diversity can be both abstract and concrete in meaning. Each of our submitters has interpreted the theme which portrays the differences that exemplify each and every contributor’s talents. You could say the realm of art has brought us together to present the many dimensions of diversity. Our gratitude to this month’s submitters and their teams for giving our readers a glimpse of what the world has to offer.

Rebecka Skog

Born in Sweden, Rebecka Skog moved to the Canary Islands, where she studied Fine Arts on the island of Tenerife. Here, she was inspired by the landscape, the sea, the blue sky and the traditional culture of the islands.

On Thin Ice Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Canada (69°07’02’N 105°03’11’W) The last remnants of ice cling to life as spring gives way to summer. It is here, in the land of the midnight sun, that the cognitive dissonance must truly be met. Partially frozen bodies of water? In June? A traveller’s total time in Nunavut is measured by whether she greets this sight with wondrous confusion or with a shrug and a flippant comment about how the ice seems particularly far gone this year in comparison to summers past.

1:30 AM. The sun floats over the horizon as it prepares its ascent once again. Little wonder, then, that the residents of Cambridge Bay seek out the best in curtains and drapes to block out the ever-present, never resting sunlight.

A Summer’s Glory Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada (62°26’32’N 114°23’51’W) For much of the year, the Arctic blusters and blows in fits of chilly gale force winds and reveals her deadly inhospitable moods, demanding to know what you are doing in her domain. But every year, for a few months, she blossoms into a beautiful landscape for woodland creatures and fantastic flowers. Beautiful pink flowers adorn her summer dress; past, present and future all present at once in the various stages of floral blossom. Here, a bud just flowering. There, a flower in full glorious bloom. And there, the wilting petals in the final stages of its beauty.

Her luxurious raiment teems with living creatures. A robin fills the morning air with his sweet birdsong, hopping about searching for morning sustenance. Indeed, he has dressed finely indeed this wonderful morning, as he feeds himself in preparation to seek out a partner with which to dance in this spring cycle of life.

Bait and switch!

Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, Canada (62°48’35’N 092°05’58’W) The burbling and bubbling of the rushing water underfoot soothes the mind as the fisherman casts and reels repeatedly, reveling in the rhythm of the routine. The graylings are biting, and the adventure is on. As he lures the fish in with promises of delicious food, he delivers instead a sharp hook in their mouth. The promise of delicious food was not a lie. But the fish was mistaken as to who the food was going to be. Mixed feelings of sadness and suspense flood the fisherman’s mind as he philosophizes over how some must die so that others may live. He commits to a sustainable practice of fishing so that no more than necessary must die, in order for him to live.

Winter is Coming Pond Inlet, Nunavut, Canada (72°41’57’N 077°57’33’W) The beauty of the Arctic is both mesmerizing and terrifying. From hour to hour and day to day, the mountains shift subtly with the daylight. Sometimes, they draw the clouds about themselves, a wispy shawl coyly covering her jagged contours. Sometimes they stand proudly, exhibiting their sharpest outlines. They always remain as a dangerous frontier, a wondrous adventure awaiting the prepared, and a certain death meeting the foolish.

Jonathan Park first arrived in the Canadian Arctic in September 2013 and its siren call seized his heart. Since then, his travels have taken him all over the Canadian North, providing him with many inspirations for his photography and his writing. Inuit folklore and mythology have opened his creative horizons and you can read his short story heavily influenced by his exposure to Inuit spirituality in Issue 17 of VEUX Magazine.
