Regina Buryak 10 | VEUX | ISSUE 35 - BOOK 2

Text by Vivien Hoang Regina Buryak is a San Francisco area published artist that specializes in watercolor, ink and mixed media, with a focus on female portraits done in the contemporary pop art and fashion illustration style. While Buryak has no formal art education, it seemed inevitable that she would find herself in the art world. “I grew up in a house with a lot of art supplies and two parents that could make beautiful things out of just about anything. Most of my toys were of the ‘smart art’ variety and I loved visiting the neighborhood gigantic art supply shop with my mom. I tried pottery, papier-mâché, sewing and even sculpture using found objects and fiddled around with some paints, but nothing serious until 2015…However, since I started painting as an adult I have not stopped and now I paint every day...” Her art is whimsical, carefree, soft and ephemeral. It’s a reflection of the beauty she finds inspirational, and also of her working style. “I feel that I never know how each portrait will turn out until they’re done - I modify my plan as I go - and I feel that each painting is a unique and beautiful creature.” Buryak’s portraits are also dotted with graphic elements, floral additions, bold patterns and dramatic colors – something Buryak strives to balance against the overall feel of the images. “The biggest challenge for me is reining in my urge to over embellish or add too much color, probably due to the improvisational manner in which I create!” Her talent is evident. Despite being relatively new to the art world, she is already published and is working towards having a gallery show. She advises other artists, “Get obsessed. Do your own thing. Ask yourself, ‘What’s my style?’ and find an honest critic.” Her original works are available for sale at www.saatchiart.com/reginaburyak. Prints are available on her website: www.reginaburyak.com. An Honest Farewell Text and Photography by Wales Wong Toronto had been expecting the closure of Honest Ed’s since it was first announced that the landmark would be taken over by yet another condo building. With such a long history of memories and events thanks to Ed Mirvish and his family, it came as no surprise that if Honest Ed’s was going to shut off its lights, it would do so with a bang.

16 | VEUX | ISSUE 35 - BOOK 2

The Centre for Social Innovation and Toronto For Everyone threw a huge four-day party to celebrate Honest Ed’s legacy. From February 23-26, 2017, the community had the chance to visit this place and participate in a series of talks, activities, and even an art maze! We got a chance to join in the revelry which included the first night of food, drinks, and art. The entertainment was never ending. My personal highlights from that night were trying out craft beers from Collective Arts Brewing and dancing to A Little Rambunctious Quartet. But quite possibly the cherry on top of an already loaded sundae was witnessing Douglas Kerr, the original Honest Ed’s sign painter, whip up signs for patrons that night. His talent and skill is definitely immortalized in these signs that were already being sold months ago when Honest Ed’s was clearing out its inventory. Anyone who has stepped foot into this building will know that you can easily get lost in all of the nooks and crannies. Utilizing the layout to create an art maze was definitely genius. Friday - Sunday night’s Amazement: Immersive Art Maze was well enjoyed by many. Local artists had paintings, installations, and interactive performances were a treat for all senses. Jenn Dumaran introduced me to Timeraiser150, an event happening in May, which auctions artwork by local artists. Bids come in the form of volunteer hours rather than money. By bidding the highest number of volunteer hours which a bidder will complete within a year, this process encourages more people to contribute to their communities in different ways while supporting Canadian artists. I know I’m definitely looking forward to this event! While it’s sad to see yet another famous landmark go in order to make way for more towering buildings in this city’s landscape, the work and efforts of many including volunteers made this farewell not about saying good-bye, but about celebrating an unforgettable contribution made by Honest Ed’s.
