Josh Byer Text by Vivien Hoang When we were first introduced to Josh Byer, it was as a visual artist from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. However, his humble email belied the extent of his creative endeavors. Byer is the progenitor of the Faux Fauvism modern art movement, inspired by early 20th-century Fauvism movement. You can clearly see the relationship and natural progression; Byer’s works incorporate the bold lines, daring brushstrokes and bright color palettes to its modern, electric and neon conclusions. If being the pioneer for a modern art movement wasn’t enough, Byer also has Hollywood film and TV credits to his name as well as writing accolades. Despite the very serious business of it all, Byer has maintained his sense of whimsy, which is evident in both his art and his responses during our interview. Q. How did you get started doing art? When I was two I thought that if I drew a treasure map and marked a spot, that treasure would somehow appear at that spot. I sketched atop the hallway and bedroom walls, filling them with treasure maps. I was no vandal. I was creating wealth. A smarter kid might’ve known that you have to go somewhere and bury treasure in order for treasure to actually be there. Me, I didn’t yet understand causality. My parents did though. They taught me all about it while they wallpapered the house. Q. Do you remember the first time you picked up a brush or a pencil? Sadly no. That would be a marvelous memory. Q. When did you realize you could make this a career? In my early 20s I was cast in a Snoop Doggy Dogg movie called “Bones”. For a month I got to eat fancy food and fight demon hounds. Kirby Morrow and I were given a Dodge Viper to drive poorly and Deezer D called me the popo. It was the best time ever. Q. How did you develop your unique style? After my mother passed away, I was unable to sit with my pain. I started painting all the time. Faux Fauvism is the result. Q. What do you find most rewarding about what you do? Art can use beauty to take pain out of the world. Q. What’s next for you? Lunch. Q. Do you have any words of advice for new artists? Bring a lunch.
