Getting to Know YYJ Plane-spotting at Victoria International - Part One

By: Christie Hall Victoria International, or YYJ, is the ninth busiest aiport in Canada and also the eighth favourite aiport in the world, according to a recent online survey. So not only do we live in an amazing area of the world, but our airport is awesome. Could life get any better? However, as most of you know, there is much more to YYJ than the main terminal and the Victoria Flying Club. We recently spent some time on a sunny Sunday travelling the perimeter of YYJ, documenting our favourite spots for watching aircraft, because obviously our life is very glamorous and exciting, and this is what glamorous and exciting people do on a weekend! Most of you will be familiar with a lot of these locations, but there might be one or two little gems you weren’t aware of. Next time the sun shines, grab your

May 2012

camera and your coffee, hop in the car (or better yet on your bike!), and go explore YYJ. See if you can figure out where each of these eight photos were taken. If you can handle the suspense, we’ll include the locations, and a helpful map, in next month’s issue. Visiting each of these spots will not only afford you the opportunity to get a great view of the air traffic, but you’ll be able to learn some local history while you’re at it. And with the right person, it makes for a fun and inexpensive date. And who doesn’t love a good aviation-themed date? Note: All of these photos were taken in locations that are very much open to the public. So you wno’t need to go climbing any fences or crossing into restricted areas to find these spots. PEP-Air’s 2011 Volunteer of the Year By: Christie Hall

Marie Woodruff (right) receives a presentation from BC Minister of Public Safety, Shirley Bond tions. During the recent National Volunteer Week, I Marie forwarded me the following, taken from happened upon a familiar VFC face in the news. Marie the website of the Provincial Emergency Program Air, Woodruff received the honour of being named PEPalso known as PEP. http://www.embc-air.org/ Air’s 2011 Volunteer of the Year. I contacted Marie to find out more about the award and to learn about her “The Provincial Emergency Program Air, or PEP AIR, is a BC-wide volunteer aviation association volunteer role with PEP Air. dedicated to the promotion of Aviation Safety, and to the Marie’s involvement in aviation began in August of 1992 when she joined The Victoria Flying Club. provision of air search support services to the National Search and Rescue Program. She was recruited into PEP (Provincial Emergency Program Air) by some fellow flying club members in Membership is open to aircraft owners and pilots, as well as to those who wish to receive training 1994 to assist with ground support tasks, and later became a spotter in 1996 and a Radio Operator/Navias spotters and navigators. Rescue Competition at Comox in that same year. She PEP AIR augments Canadian Forces (CF) prihas received a Certificate of Appreciation for her work mary resources during actual SAR missions and often on compiling PEP Air History. Currently, PEP AIR has over 100 aircraft that are crewed by more than 900 pilots, spotters and navigators. There are many other equally important groundrelated duties and assignments that members might undertake. PEP AIR volunteers have given more than 25,000 hours of their time in volunteering in the last year alone. PEP AIR is an associate member of the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association, or CASARA, and works closely with 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron with the Canadian Forces located at 19 Wing, Comox, BC.” In addition to her involvement with PEP, Marie assists with the Down But Not Out presentations by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre at The Victoria Flying Club, recruiting volunteers, and generating interest among other club members. If there is any job to be done around the club, Marie is generally one of the first to volunteer. Don Devenney, vice-president of the Victoria Flying Club, once commented that there are a lot of groups that would be happy to have Marie Woodruff as a volunteer. He makes a good point. In a day and age where people are busier than ever, volunteerism is an often forgotten civic duty. Marie is someone who has not forgotten. When asked why she volunteers with PEP, Marie gives two reasons. The first is that while the physical demands and time commitments of Ground SAR and Coast Guard are not for everyone, assisting with PEP Air fits with her skills and interests. Marie’s other

Aviation Excellence Since 1946

motivation for volunteering with PEP Air stems from a long-held admiration for the Air Force, specifically the Search and Rescue component. Anyone who knows Marie is familiar with her keen interest in aviation and helping out where she can, in her modest, unassuming way. Her volunteer role seems second nature to her, a desire to give back that is fuelled by a concern for the welfare of others. In Marie’s own words: “I don’t know what else to say... except it’s a team effort. We’re all in this together...that others may live.” Next time you see Marie Woodruff around The Victoria Flying club, pass on your congratulations to her. And if you have an interest in volunteering with PEP Air or CASARA, Marie is a great source for all the information you might need. As Marie pointed out, it’s good timing for this story to appear in The Patrician, as May 6-12 is the upcoming Emergency Preparedness Week. This is a great opportunity to not only give some thought to your own level of preparedness for an emergency, but also to consider how you can help when others are in an emergency situation. Visit the PEP Air website to find out how you can volunteer in the role of pilot, navigator, spotter, flight operations, logistics, administration, security, and communications. http://www.embc-air.org/join-us A big thank-you to Marie Woodruff, for her ongoing volunteer efforts, and for sharing her story.

May Mystery Aircraft

Can you identify the aircraft shown Above? Email: thepatrician@shaw.ca April Mystery Identified

The aircraft is a SAAB Scandia which developed at the end of World War 2 as a DC-3 replacement. First flight was in November 1946. The plane could seat 2432 passengers with a 1000 KM range. It was ordered by ABA Swedish Airlines before ABA became part of SAS. They ordered 11 and VASP (Brazil) and Aerovias do Brasil ordered 6. VASP purchased the remaining Scandia’s from SAS in 1957 and operated the type until 1966. ~ Jim Fretwell Flying club member It’s a Saab 90 scandia. ~ Morgan

From Tim: This month it’s the SAAB Scandia. Yet another supposedly DC-3 replacement which came out in the late 1940s and could carry up to 32 passengers. Only 18 were built and they served with Scandinavian Airlines System in Europe and VASP in Brazil.

I have to offer an editorial apology to Daryl Williams regarding the identification of the March Mystery Aircraft. Daryl suggested that it was CT/4 which is, in fact, the same as the Victa Air Tourer. So it appears that Tim hasn’t stumped all of us quite yet, but I’m sure he’ll keep trying! Thanks to Daryl for bringing that to my attention, and to Tim for clarifying. ~Christie www.flyvfc.com
