Remembrance Day - November 11
E
ach year in the November issue of The Patrician, The Victoria Flying Club takes time to recognize its connection to Canada’s military. CYYJ sits on the former RCAF Station Patricia Bay, and the Victoria Flying Club occupies the location used by the RAF during WWII. In 1946, the Victoria Flying Club was established in the post-war quiet. But the military legacy of the club did not end. It lives on, in the members and activities of the present-day Victoria Flying Club. There are a number of WWII veterans who belong to the club, several of whom still hold a pilot’s licence. The Victoria Flying Club is involved in Cadet training, supporting our future air-force pilots, and we have a strong connection and relationship with 443 Squadron located across the airfield. A significant number of our club members are armed forces personnel based in various locations across the country and around the world, as well as a number of civilians employed at CFB Esquimalt. We are also very proud of some of our younger club members who are currently training for a career with the RCAF. This month The Patrician and the Victoria Flying Club honour all military personnel; past, present, and future. Thank-you for serving our country at home and overseas. We will not forget.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young. Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.

Patriotism is not dying for one's country, it is living for one's contry. And for humanity. Perhaps that is not as romantic, but it's better.

Thanksgiving Fly-Out Brunch at CYPW By: Eleanor Eastick
W
ell, Wow! The Powell River flyout took place just two days before our gorgeous summer days ended. CYPW = Caught Your Perfect Weather. More than that, I'll add another quasi-acronym: BFFF - yes, Before Fall's First Fog. Okay, this is getting crazy but the bottom line is that the flyout really caught the last days of that long run of hot, clear days and amazingly, there had been no morning fogs, usually so prevalent in October. Thanksgiving morning was bright and clear as we all began gathering at the Club around 0800 to get the final briefing before take-off although Jonathan had kept everyone up to the minute with email information. Thank you, Jonathan for all the work in organizing the flyout! Of the 13 aircraft in the flyout, five were VFC planes - there would have one more from VFC had it not been grounded at the last minute. The majority of the 39 people who made the flight were VFC members as well. Two planes were mainland based - nice to have the COPA touch and participation of people from other flying clubs. That's what fun flying is all about - getting together with other pilots and going places, enjoying our spectacular west coast. Thanks to all the picture-takers in the group, too who provided the proof of the beauty of our area, and especially to Doug

Marin for creating and up-loading a short video of the fantastic flight from CYYJ to CYPW. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxmoGoYju08 The airport at Powell River is undergoing improvements; better runway drainage and some repaving, making fuel temporarily unavailable. As we arrived, Jonathan himself marshalled all the planes into parking places on the grass area off taxiway Bravo. Very neatly done! He parked his own 172 in the deepest ruts in the field and got the left main and nose gear stuck. There were lots of flyouters to help pull the plane out. Very gallant of the organizer to take the worst parking place and leave all the good ones for others! Yet another considerate thing Jonathan did was to phone Julie's Airport Market & Grill, just to let the staff know that a mob of 39 would be arriving for brunch all at the same time. We enjoyed their good food and pleasant and efficient service in trying and unusual circumstances. The restaurant is just to the right outside the main gate of the airport - an interesting aviation-themed place, a great spot to eat at CYPW - check it out on your next flight there. By early afternoon, everyone was departing, home in time for the big family turkey dinner. What an awesome holiday Monday!

“Without disruption of air traffic, these fearless, forthright, indomitable and courageous individuals did venture into the wild blue yonder in flying machines. Furthermore, these skilful ndividuals did safely land said flying machines at Victoria International Airport, incurring no significant damage to self or machine, thus completing first solo flights.

ARE YOU
WINTERWEATHER
READY?
AND VFC INSTRUCTOR SIMON DENNIS present a unique one-day seminar that goes above and beyond the standard training syllabus and is designed to help every pilot make safer decisions during the winter weather of British Columbia.
Wondering if this course is for you? It was for these past participants last winter. “I just wanted to thank you again for a most informative and impeccably planned course about a vital aspect of aviation but also a fascinating topic in its own right.”
“The material was well organized and presented in a clear, professional, and interesting manner. It is obvious that a lot of hard work went into this endeavor. Kudos to Simon on a job well done. I'm looking forward to the next course!”
“Thank you very much for your excellent presentation today. It was rich in material, nicely organized and lucidly explained.” “I offer you my thanks and congratulations for a job well done. As a retired school principal, I seem to always look at the whole process, the materials used, methods, etc. You did a great job! The book and handouts are excellent and allow us to review and refer back as needed. My thanks to you.”

November Mystery Aircraft
Can you identify the aircraft shown Above? Email: thepatrician@shaw.ca October Mystery Identified
From Tim: This month it’s the Douglas B-23 Dragon bomber. Designed and flown in the late 1930s, its wing was similar to the DC-3 which probably accounted for the less than sparkling performance. Most were converted to UC-67 transports and many, like the one shown, were adapted to civil VIP use after WW-II.
