Annual General Meeting Who is Eligible to Vote Scheduled for March 6 at the AGM? The Victoria Flying Club Annual General Meeting has been scheduled for Thursday March 6 in the VFC pilot’s lounge. The meeting will begin, as it always does, at 6:00pm with wine and cheese. The business portion of the evening gets under way at 7:00pm.
What Happens at the AGM? The purpose of the Annual General Meeting is to provide an opportunity for discussion and decision making amongst club members. As a non-profit organization, we are governed by an elected volunteer Board of Directors. Three of the main functions of the AGM are to review prior year results, discuss plans for the current year, and also to elect new directors to the board.
While attendance at the AGM is open to all members, voting priviliges are extended to those with Sustaining Memberships and Life Memberships only. If you have been a member in good standing of the Victoria Flying Club for 24 consecutive months, then you are eligible to become a Sustaining Member. Sustaining Members pay slightly higher membership fees, but also receive a discount on aircraft rentals, fuel, etc. If you have been a member for 24 consecutive months, please pick up a Sustaining Member application from the VFC office, and plan to attend the AGM.
How Can You Get Involved? The Board of Directors consists of a group of Victoria Flying Club
members who use their collective knowledge and skills to conduct club business on behalf of all members. They are governed by a set of by-laws and make decisions regarding aircraft and equipment, facilities, staffing, and various other areas of club business. Sustaining and Life Members are eligible to be nominated for a director position. Nomination forms are available at the VFC office and nominations will also be accepted from the floor at the AGM. Directors must be nominated by two other Sustaining or Life Members. Being involved with the VFC Board of Directors is a great opportunity to contribute to the future of the Victoria Flying Club, and to the local aviation community.
For more information, please contact VFC Manager, Gerry Mants, at info@flyvfc.com or 250-656-2833.
Important Reminder:Don’t forget to check the expiry date on your Aviation Document Booklet. Many of first issued booklets are expiring soon. The renewal process can take up to 8-12 weeks to complete.

Flight Training
The CFI’s CORNER By: Graham Palmer, CFI
Risk vs. Reward We are all very fortunate to be a part of such a great flying club. Many of our members, who have been affiliated with other flying clubs, never hesitate to let us know that they think VFC is one of the best. Whether it’s the people, the training, our location, our aircraft, facility, surrounding scenery, or a combination of all of this, VFC is definitely an appealing club to be a part of. We feel that our steadfast commitment to the safety of our members, guests, staff, aircraft, and facility has been one of the most important values that have allowed us to create one of the best flying clubs in Canada.
restrictive, we risk the possibility of making flying with VFC less appealing. However, our ongoing commitment to safety must continue to safeguard our people, fleet, and facility.
blades. A discussion with the pilot, and examination of the journey logbook revealed that KMY had operated from several registered aerodromes with gravel surfaces.
Recently I was asked if a club aircraft could land at Tipella (CBB7), a 2300’ gravel airstrip at the north end of Harrison Lake. While Tipella is a registered aerodrome, and appears in the CFS, it’s not the kind of airstrip we want our aircraft to be operated from. Unfortunately my answer was no. This was a situation where the risk of something happening was far greater than the reward of a pilot being able to attempt his first gravel airstrip landing. Aside from the risk of something going seriously wrong and somebody getting hurt, the risk of incurring significant aircraft damage would have simply been too high.
Recently we had this propeller sent out for overhaul and balancing at Western Propeller. In order to completely remove the damaged area, the propeller was re-shaped and its dimensions reduced to the minimums permissible for this model of propeller; and therefore this $5,000 propeller is now within millimeters of the end of its service life after just a year of use.
While flying and learning to fly is inherently safe, there are circumstances where the level of risk associated with a particular operation may be elevated. Recognizing and mitigating these risks can be accomplished in part by establishing Membership Rules & Regulations, and by evaluating individual circumstances on a progressive and dynamic basis.
Case in point, not long ago we upgraded KMY’s performance by acquiring the Air Plains Cessna 172R 180 H.P. STC (Supplemental Type Certificate). In doing so the cruise speeds, climb rates, engine RPMs, and payload were increased to those equivalent to a Cessna 172 SP. While retaining the original IO360 engine, the STC called for the installation of a new tachometer, induction system and propeller. The propeller’s original diameter of 75” was increased to 76”, and the blade pitch was decreased from 70” to 58”.
Finding the balance between low and medium levels of risk can at times be challenging because of our members’ diverse piloting experience, ability, and skill. If we create policies that are too
It wasn’t long after we completed this modification that KMY departed on a 29-hour round trip to Whitehorse. Upon its return we discovered significant rock-chip damage to one of the propeller

While the Victoria Flying Club is proud to offer our members a modern fleet of aircraft at one of the lowest rental rates in Canada, we must continue to constantly evaluate risk versus reward. Exposing ourselves to elevated risk, or incurring unnecessary damage may contribute to increases in our rental rates. Nearly 70 years of flight training has shaped our policies and procedures; and we feel that they provide a high level of safety, are manageable, and fair. As a result, we are all very fortunate to be a part of such a great Flying Club.

WINGS BANQUET
The annual Victoria Flying Club Wings Banquet is a celebration of aviation. It is also a celebration of individual and club accomplishments. The Wings Banquet is a long-held tradition which brings together new pilots and seasoned pilots to honour the milestones reached in the previous year.
be joined by Rosella Bjornson as our Wings Banquet guest speaker. Rosella is the first Canadian female airline pilot, and a member of the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame. Rosella shared from her collection of memorable experiences and provided inspiration for the next generation of professional pilots.
Each year at the Wings Banquet we also have the privilege of recognizing those who have earned a CPL or a Class IV Instructor rating in the previous year, as well as a number of awards and bursaries presented based on both achievement and the evaluation of a written statement of intent for future training.
On Saturday February 1st, well over one hundred VFC pilots and guests gathered at the Esquimalt Ward Room. As always, an excellent dinner was enjoyed by all before the more formal portion of the evening.
The high-light of any Wings Banquet is, of course, the presentation of wings to new pilots. It is an honour to share in this presentation and to recognize the hours of hard work, determination, and study that have lead to the achievement of becoming a licenced pilot.
The Victoria Flying Club congratulates each of our graduates and award recipients for this past year. We are proud of each of you, and we look forward to your future achievements in the aviation industry.

BC CHALLENGE - Your 2014 Adventure The Victoria Flying Club is challenging pilots to visit as many airports in BC as possible. Our focus is to really encourage participation in the event (even if it means flying once a month) because for some us looking at the list of 91 airports in BC could be intimidating. That being said we are making a point of providing all of our participants with an opportunity to win. The rules for the Challenge are as follows: 1. Pilots must be members of the Victoria Flying Club. 2. The first category of pilots will include pilots flying club aircraft; and the second category is for owners flying their own aircraft. 3. Fly safe. This is a challenge, not a race. 4. You must be the pilot in command of an aircraft to count an airport. The pilot in command of an aircraft can count both departing and destination airport as visited when flying a cross country flight. Local flights that start and end at CYYJ will not be counted. 5. It’s fine if two people fly multiple legs together and each pilot claims one of the legs; but you may not enter as a team. 6. While there are no teams, we wish to stress that this is a fun challenge so we encourage pilots to fly as a group, either in the same aircraft, or as a group of aircraft. This also offers added safety measures. For example, the group can decide if
March 2014
the weather is safe; or if there is a mechanical problem you have some back up. 7. Student pilots are able to record an airport if they are pilot in command for that leg. This would include flying on a solo cross country flight. A student pilot flying with another pilot is called a passenger.
8. Not all airports in BC qualify for this challenge. Private airports and airports with unsuitable runway surfaces will be excluded. The Club has excluded airports with gravel, grass and other non-paved surfaces to protect aircraft from damage. VFC Policy for taking Club planes out are that if a strip is registered and longer than 2000’ it’s acceptable, for shorter aerodromes pilots require permission to go there. The complete list of qualifying airports can be found at the VFC Dispatch counter or on the VFC Group Facebook page. 9. Touch and goes do not count. The flight must have a full stop to count the airport. A photo on the ground is also required. Show them off to our dispatchers or on our Facebook or Twitter pages. 10. The prize categories have been published on the VFC Group Facebook page. For more information please feel free to as the VFC office staff or anyone on the Board. Prize categories and prizes will be posted on the Challenge Wall and will be published in The Patrician. 11. The top five awards will be given out at the Annual Wings Banquet. A monthly draw will 11
also be made for all pilots registered in the challenge who have visited at least one airport that month. For each airport a pilot visits, the pilot will receive one ticket for the airport visited. Two monthly participation prizes will be drawn each month. Each month the draw count will be restarted. Surprise Spot Prizes are awarded whenever our VicePresident is feeling frisky so get out there and fly because you just never know!
12. Like everything in aviation there will be some paperwork. Upon returning to the club the pilot must notify the front desk about the airports visited. The front desk will record the achievement and place the information on the Challenge Wall. 13. Our last rule is that for each airport visited the pilot must: a. take a photo of themselves or the aircraft (or both) at the airport; b. In the alternative, the pilot can provide a piece of trivia about the airport or the region. For example, did you know that Chilliwack has the best pie at any airport in BC? What about that the first airplane ever to land in Nelson was in 1912 but it wasn’t until 1971 that a permanent airport was constructed; c. Extra love if you leave a VFC pen behind at the airport. 14. Have fun, stay safe and tell us all about your adventures!

Prince George:
Our BC Airport Challenge has been met with unprecedented support and encouragement from the business community across the Province and the aviation community across Canada! Every single morning I wake up to an email from another one of your cheerleaders. I am so excited about your potential and possibility (not to mention all of the unbelievable prizes) that I can barely contain my enthusiasm. This is going to be a year of incredible challenge for many of us. I know you’re gonna knock it out of the park! I know every single one of you will be gracious and tenacious. Everyone knows you’re on your way. Fly safe! Have a great time! And use your best manners.
For the first person to fly to all the airports within 125NM of CYYJ, the Hope Regional Airpark has a prize of 100 L of 100LL - AV Gas. Fuel voucher will be redeemable at the Hope Regional Airpark. Aside from the fuel, they have also connected with many businesses in the area to provide all of our participating pilots with discounts at local attractions, so they can experience the Fraser Valley Regional District by land and air! So make sure to connect with Grant and/or Darla at the Hope Airpark or call us at 604 860 3402.
When you fly into YXS, the good people from the Prince George Airport Authority have a prize waiting for you. There’s a bit of a catch though. We have to let them know you’re coming so please pass on your information to our dispatchers they will make sure they are expecting you.
Camping under wing is available at the Hope Airpark, and they have all the comforts of home at the Airpark for your use, including a full kitchen, lounge, and if you really need it - a shower too.
Fairmont Hot Springs: Did you know that all of the pilots who land at Fairmont Hot Springs Airport get their coveted key chain? If you fly there this year for the Challenge, make sure to leave them a pen. They have kindly sent us some goodies for fun.

Once again, the Flight 6 meeting saw a big turnout on February 5th at the Catalina. The star attraction was John Howroyd and his delightfully enthusiastic presentation on custom-built aircraft; not just building, but maintaining, flying and having a whole lot of fun with them. Anyone who hears John speak will be swept up with the same joie de vivre. Thank you John for coming down from Ravensfield to make the presentation. The next regular meeting of Flight 6 will be Wednesday, April 2 at the Catalina. As always, come early for food and socializing before the 7 PM start. The topic for the evening will be US Customs procedures. We encourage anyone interested to come join us. As always, participation is absolutely free! For further information please contact
