Here’s What’s Happening at VFC!
There’s never a dull moment at VFC, but at this time of year especially, we really start to notice things picking up. Here are a few things to remember and plan for in the coming weeks! Mountain Groundschool is happening Saturday May 3. Why should you go? Because BC is beautiful and you can’t see most of it unless you can fly in the mountains! Also, being able to fly in mountainous terrain will greatly enhance your chance of winning fabulous prizes in the BC Airport Challenge due to your increased ability to visit as many airports as possible! Call the office to save your last minute space in this Saturday’s class. COPA has recently changed their meeting nights to the first Tuesday of each month so as not to conflict with VFC’s PPL groundschool. Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings and it is always interesting and engaging. The next meeting is Tuesday May 6 and the topic is Mountain Flying (is anyone sensing a theme?). Check out page 12 for more information. May 10 is a BIG day at VFC. It’s our Spring Open House and you’re ALL invited! In addition to all the usual Open House fun, Contrails Aviation is also hosting a Show n’ Shine. There will be lots of great aircraft for you to drool over out on the ramp, so please plan to join us!
Mountain Groundschool
Now is a great time of year to brush off the cobwebs! Book an Annual Checkride with an instructor and brush up on your skills after a long winter of armchair flying. Every VFC member is entitled to two hours of instructor time at no charge for an annual checkride. We invite you to take advantage of the offer and keep your skills sharp!
Saturday May 3 1300-1700 Cost: $75 Please call dispatch to register. 250-656-2833
Also, there’s no time like the present to work on a night rating! Talk to your instructor and book those evening flights soon.

VFC Welcomes the Community on May 10
If flying a plane is on your bucket list, you’ll want to visit the Victoria Flying Club for our next Open House Saturday May 10th from 11am-3pm. Twice a year, the Victoria Flying Club, located beside the control tower at the Victoria International Airport, opens its doors to the community. It’s a chance not only to introduce people to the joy of flight, but to showcase all that the club has to offer. Those attending the open house will enjoy meeting pilots, learning about aviation careers, recreational options, and touring the facility. There are also opportunities to try out the Redbird full-motion flight simulator, which puts you in the pilot’s seat of a virtual aircraft. For the more enthusiastic folks, Discovery Flights are available, providing the chance to go up in a Cessna 172 with one of the club’s qualified instructors, and to get a sense of what it’s like to actually fly a plane. The Victoria Flying Club has been training world-class professional and recreational pilots since 1946. Local and international students benefit from top-notch instruction on a standardized fleet of Cessna 172S Model aircraft, at one of Canada’s busiest airports, and in a varied terrain setting, providing an unsurpassed level of training. VFC professional pilot May 2014
alumni are currently employed with a variety of national and international carriers including: WestJet and WestJet Encore, Air Canada and Jazz, Cathay Pacific, Sunwest Aviation, Carson Aviation, Central Mountain Air, Buffalo Airways, Air Partners, Perimeter Aviation, Pacific Coastal Airlines, as well as with the Canadian military. The Victoria Flying Club is immensely proud of their graduates, and works hard to ensure their pilots are in a position to secure employment, backed by the reputation of a solid training facility. In addition to professional training, the Victoria Flying Club has maintained its original focus as a social club, in operation since the end of WW2. Members have access to the entire fleet of aircraft, a flexible instruction schedule, use of the facilities, and opportunity to take part in further training opportunities and social events. Club members are currently participating in the BC Airport Challenge, a club-run contest that has participants attempting to land at as many of the approved BC Airports as possible before year end, with the promise of some amazing monthly prizes and grand prizes donated by local and national sponsors. Additionally, members are currently throwing their hats in the ring for the chance of a lifetime and the opportunity to learn about and 3
fly a Nanchang, a truly unique experience! Visitors to the May 10 Open House will not only get to check out what the club has to offer, but will also have the chance to meet members from various local aviation organizations, including CASARA (Civil Air Search and Rescue), NavCanada, COPA, the UVic Diploma in Business Administration Aviation Option program, and the Vancouver Island Chapter of Women in Aviation. And for the tire kickers in the crowd, Contrails Aviation is sponsoring the Victoria International Show ‘n Shine, featuring a wide range of local and visiting aircraft. Whether you’re an aspiring WestJet captain, in the market for an exciting new hobby, crossing items off that bucket list, or happier with your feet on the ground, the Victoria Flying Club Open House on May 10 will have something for everyone to enjoy! Don’t miss this opportunity to get an inside look at the fascinating world of flight.
Don’t Miss This!

Mystery Aircraft
MAY MYSTERY AIRCRAFT Can you identify the aircraft shown here? Email: thepatrician@shaw.ca
April Mystery Identified From Tim: This month it’s the Syberjet SJ-30. Originally conceived by Ed Swearingen (of Metorliner fame) as the SA-30 Fanjet in 1986, this bizjet suffered a number of developmental and funding problems. First delivery was in 2007 with latest bankruptcy taking place 2010; only eight were built. This month’s mystery was correctly identified by: Nobody! Score another point for Tim. Who’s up for the challenge this month? “Sweat the small stuff. Without letting anyone see you sweat.” ― Chris Hadfield An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth May 2014

Forty-seven people attended the April 2nd meeting of Flight 6, the largest audience so far. Each month more and more people are showing up for the informative talks on topics of general interest to pilots and passengers. The Catalina was pretty much overwhelmed by such a large group wanting food service all at once. Therefore, we’d like a heads-up from those of you planning to have dinner there before the meeting - a quick email to copaflight6@gmail.com would be appreciated.
April 2nd was a bit of a special meeting with several VFC Board members present to promote and underline the COPA link to VFC and WAI and their many shared activities. These are exciting times with new flyouts, new and different aviation things to do and more opportunity for all VFC members to participate. Because of a conflict with the VFC ground school times, COPA Flight 6 will now meet on the first Tuesday of each month. On Tuesday, May 6th, mountain flying will be the topic for discussion, just in time for summer flights in the Pacific Northwest. Come and enjoy socializing and optional dinner at 6 PM, meeting at 7 PM at the Catalina. All are welcome. For more information contact copaflight6@gmail. com.

Attention All You Camera-shy VFC Alumni! We are still looking for photos of our successful (and good looking!) alumni to share at our upcoming Open House on May 10. BC CHALLENGE - Your 2014 Adventure By: Ken Cathro VFC really sparked my ambition to fly a little closer to home and see as many BC airport as I can this year. Since purchasing the Mooney in 2008 my trips have always been to plan and fly the long distance getaways, with trips to Costa Rica, across Canada (4 times) the pilgrimage to Oshkosh, and even a transatlantic venture to Scotland and back. At the end of day any of those trips are just a bunch of 3 hour flights strung together. The 30 minute flights hopping around the province can actually be more of a challenge. Who knows maybe I’ll get my 40 airport bucket list check mark this year.

I decided to throw my prop into the ring and visit a few of the airports on the VFC challenge list. I was already planing a trip to Campbell River to pick up a friend on the Sunday and head to Kelowna for a meeting Monday. A quick weather check was calling for severe clear and the NOTAMS indicated a Class C airspace restriction, so some minor changes to the plan were made.

VFC News The first job is inventory, and is best done as a team of two: one reads out the author, title, date, category and format (hardcover vs. paperback, etc.), and the other performs the data entry on an Excel spreadsheet, using a Mac laptop with mouse (unless a better database is available – suggestions are welcome). Please contact Marie Woodruff at bccasarahistory@yahoo.ca or (250) 592-5371 for more info. Thanks!

Assistance Required With Special Project We need a lover of books, videos and magazines to give our Library some intensive care and spring cleaning! Do you like organizing things? Can you handle lifting books?
Find out more about what’s going on at your favourite flying club, read interesting aviation articles, and keep up to date with news from the world of aviation. Send interesting links, post photos, tweet comments.
Not afraid of getting your hands dirty? In short: The Library needs your help!! The videos, books and magazines all need to be inventoried, evaluated and sorted. A couple of people chipping away at it a bit at a time will help us figure out what we have. Then we can decide what to keep, donate to worthy causes…or dispose of (last resort only).
