Spring/Summer Hours To accommodate those who fly in the evening hours, the Victoria Flying Club office is now open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week. The longer daylight hours are great for an after-work flight. Book a plane, and enjoy an evening out with friends while you fly over the city.
Friendly Reminder: VFC Currency In addition to maintaining 60 day currency for Victoria Flying Club aircraft rental, you must fly a minimum of 12 hours in each year to remain current. A one hour flight each month will keep you current. If you’ve taken a few months off through the winter weather, now is a great time to book an annual check-ride or 60-day currency check-ride with one of VFC’s instructors.
Golf Sierra Delta Zulu! There’s a new aircraft at the Victoria Flying Club. VFC recently purchased a beautiful and well-equipped Cessna 172 2003 S model. Our maintenance crew has been busy giving it a full inspection and it should be out on the line soon. Check the May Patrician for all the details.
VFC Manager, Gerry Mants recently visited me for a tour of our beautiful new store in the West Shore. Yes, that is a genuine GRIN on his face, as he sat on his dream bike - a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy. Just like everyone, Gerry really does want a Harley!! Jim Sutherland, (Past President – VFC)

On the Calendar The Victoria Flying Club will hold their spring open house on Saturday May 14th. The open house is always a great event, and a time to show off the club to those interested in flying recreationally, or as a career.

2011 Victoria Flying Club AGM: New Board of Directors Elected
On the evening of Thursday March 3rd, a contingent of about 50 people gathered in the Victoria Flying Club Pilot’s Lounge to conduct the business of the 2011 Annual General Meeting. The evening began with a chance to catch up with old friends and new acquaintances over a glass of wine and refreshments. The meeting that followed was informative and lively. The financial report was briefly presented and accepted. Gerry Mants gave the general manager’s report on the previous year’s business, a year that was overall good, although marked by some slow months due to both weather and the 2010 Vancouver-Whistler Olympic Games. Looking ahead to the remainder of 2011, the Victoria Flying Club is expecting to have a busy year, hilighted by the Cadet training program again this summer. VFC has recently purchased a Cessna 172 2003 S Model to add to the fleet, with the option to purchase another aircraft, when the right one is procured.

There was some discussion in regards to altering the by-law definition of “quorum” for the purposes of the AGM, to ensure that business is able to be conducted. The board of directors raised this concern due to the traditional low turn-out of the necessary number of sustaining members, those who hold voting privileges for the AGM. A new board of directors (above) was elected, and we look forward to working with them over the coming year. A special thank-you to out-going board members Rob Shemilt and Colin Dormuth. Your contributions of the past several years are very much appreciated by the staff and members of the Victoria Flying Club. Victoria Flying Club Raffle In Support of Red Cross Relief Efforts in Japan
The devastation following the earthquake and tsunami on March 11 in Japan feels close to home for many of us living just across the Pacific Ocean. In an effort to assist the Red Cross, the Victoria Flying Club is holding a raffle to raise funds towards the relief efforts in Japan. In the VFC lobby you will find a McCauley propeller that has been polished to a shine. It is mounted to a beautiful piece of Quarter Sapele Mahogany from Africa, generously supplied by West Wind Hardwood. It is a truly beautiful piece of art which will look fabulous in the home of anyone who has an appreciation for aviation. More importantly, the proceeds raised by the raffle will go directly to assisting those in Japan whose lives have been forever altered by the events of March 11. Raffle tickets are available from the Victoria Flying Club office for the entire month of April. The winner will be drawn May 1st. Tickets are $1 each or 5 tickets for $3.

Last Month’s Mystery
The Nardi Riviera (also called SIAIMarchette Riviera) which was produced in Italy in the late 1950s/ early 1960s. A 4-seat amphibian flying boat powered by a 250 hp engine. Only 26 in total were made and this one used to live in Victoria prior to 1988. This one stumped a few people, but not everyone! Correctly identified by: Roger Damico, Darryl Williams, and Malcolm Fletcher Looks very similar to a Trident Trigull which has resided at YYJ for a number of years.

Calling All Green Thumbs! Hi there… I’m working on the garden area by the Dakota Café, and wonder if you have any spare leaf mulch or drought resistant plants? I’m adding potted plants around the edge of the outside dining area. And there will soon be lots of wild flowers sprouting in the raised garden section. You could contact me at: thedogwalkinggardener@gmail.com Or drop the garden items at the Dakota gardening area. If you like, I could come by a dig up a few plants, if your garden is becoming too crowded. I’m working on having an aviation theme in the garden… so if you have a few suggestions for the garden, I’d love to talk with you!
