Gold Medal Hockey at VFC Regardless of the inconvenience of airspace restrictions, the Olympics were enjoyed and the gold medal hockey game celebrated at VFC. On a perfectly flyable day, all but one plane sat on the silent ramp, while cheers and jeers erupted from the Pilot’s Lounge. Despite some very tense m o m e n t s , t h e g a m e a nd t h e accompanying burgers were enjoyed by all in attendance.
Thanks to Brad Fraser (call sign: Captain Canada) for spearheading the event and manning the barbeque!

Mystery Aircraft EXCELLENT RESEARCH SKILLS EMPLOYED BY: Krzysztof Rybak Philip Powell Scott Brynen Michael Bastien Daryl Williams
Manufactured by: General Dynamics Model: Convair 990A Coronado
The oft forgotten US first-generation jet airliner. Production started in 1961 and ended in 1963 after run of 37. It was smaller than the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 but faster and famous for the clouds of black smoke produced by the GE engines.

“Without disruption of air traffic, these fearless, forthright, indomitable and courageous individuals did venture into the wild blue yonder in flying machines. Furthermore, these skilful individuals did safely land said flying machines at Victoria International Airport, incurring no significant damage to self or machine, thus completing first solo flights.”

Thanks to Danny Poirier for the following PIREP. If you notice anything during your travels which may be useful to other pilots, please feel free to email: thepatrician@shaw.ca. Please note that while this information is accurate and complete to the best of the author’s ability, the best source of information for any pilot is the Canadian Flight Supplement (CFS). The new CFS is available and valid starting April 8th. All the necessary contact information for receiving up to date information regarding landing fees etc. can be found in this useful and required tool.
By: Danny Poirier I am writing to share info I have come across
The one thing I know for fact is that change is a constant variable for pilots. On March 18th, I called Nanaimo, Pitt Meadows, and Boundary Bay, spoke to each of the general operation managers, and asked questions on what was new and what I could expect when I flew in on my next cross-country. Here is what they had to say:
with regard to some changes that are happening with our local airports. We are only three months into the New Year and a lot has happened. These things will affect not just the big airlines, but every average Joe and Jane pilot as well.
I have spoken with many people about all
Nanaimo has extended its runway and added
the new things that have come into place, are going on and about to happen; some topics over brunch with the regular Saturday morning gang at the Dakota Café, and others with pilots just in passing as they flew from over seas (lower mainland). I always like to have the correct information when I fly to my favorite spots here on the island and mainland. In these last three months, they all have not just been affected by the recent winter games but have gone through permanent changes like opening new terminals or extending runways.
an ILS. They will be implementing a new landing fee in the coming months, currently it is under review. The person I spoke with assured me that it was less than I expected, but nonetheless it will be coming, this will up the cost for any cross-country pilot wishing to make a stop over especially any student pilots on the way to Campbell River. (Editor’s Note: As of March 29 2010, the Nanaimo Airport has reverted to the fee schedule for 2009, which amounted to no landing fees for aircraft between 0-2500kg. This includes all VFC owned and operated aircraft. The fee schedule may change as the review process continues. Please see: Nanaimo Airport Fee Schedule)
I
have tried to ensure this information is correct, however, please do your homework and check things out for your self-prior to any flight.

Pitt
Meadows is back to normal operating procedures and just as busy as ever, if not more so due to new commercial traffic starting to come through this year. Originally, there was talk of installing new security measures that would remain in place after the games; however, this is not to be the case. I was told there are no new landing fees and that there is only the standard security for entering and leaving the terminal building using the door code.
involved with commercial duties such as freight or passengers in larger aircraft types.
I believe it is a good idea to always be informed ahead of time to make any travel plans run smoother and with less chance of unexpected surprises, so hopefully this information is helpful to you. Until next time, fair skies and smooth landings.
The
last place I want to discuss is Boundary Bay. They have a brand new enviro friendly terminal building not more than a five-minute walk from the old terminal. The new building is not quite complete, but is now open for business. The last phase to be completed is the restaurant, which is still located at the old terminal for about another month or so. Once they have relocated, the old terminal building will be torn down. I have been informed there is no new landing fees envisioned at this time unless you are

NELSON, BC
JULY 17, 2010
Once again the Nelson Pilots Association will be hosting the annual Nelson BC Flightfest and Airport Appreciation Days on Saturday July17, 2010. This aviation event attracts both locals and folks flying in from across BC, Alberta and the US and beyond (last years farthest participants flew in all the way from Ontario!) Nelson’s Municipal Airport (CZNL) will be buzzing with activity for young and old as well as pilots and non pilots. Aircraft arriving on the Friday evening July 16 will be treated to a BBQ and given rides up town or there will be plenty of under-wing camping available. The fun gets underway Saturday morning with our famous pancake breakfast at the airport starting at 8am. Lots of interesting antique, classic, warbird and home built aircraft will be on display - as well, flying demonstrations will be the order of the day! Also making an appearance will be the Canadian Military with two aircraft - a brand new Harvard II NATO trainer and a SAR Buffalo doing flying displays as well as on static display all day Saturday July 17. Lunch, Heritage bus tours, shopping in historic Baker Street, tire kicking, swimming, or just a relaxing walk along the beautiful water front, rounds out a fantastic laid back West Kootenay weekend. Last years event saw more that 3500 people through the gates – all gave rave
reviews. Support general aviation and the airports that serve us so well by planning to be part of this grass roots aviation tradition. We look forward to seeing you in July! – whether you fly a Cessna 150, RV-8, Piper Cub or Beech Baron !
