News and Notes‌.
From the VFC Library
On the Calendar
There are two new books in our library: both are about US Presidential aircraft: The Flying White House, and Air Force One. The former is a paperback, published in the 1970s, and jointly written by a former presidential pilot and a White House press secretary. The latter is a more recent hardcover with many colour and black-and-white photos, such as "The Independence", Harry Truman's DC-4 that was painted to look like a gigantic eagle. This book was released in 2002. Another recent addition is more of the video series The Challenge of Flight: "Air Attack" (waterbombing), "Mach One: The Sound Barrier", "Carrier Quals", "Pushing the Limits", "Out of Control", "Violent Skies" and "Nowhere Else to Go". The others in the series which we already had are: "Whispers of Death", "Go To Guns", "Eject! Eject!", and Eagles over the Gulf". (Not that you'd want to lounge around on a lovely summer day watching videos...maybe in the winter.) I found this passage in another of our library's volumes: "...(M)any wonderful experiences I have had during thousands of hours of poky air jaunts. My flying has been my passport to many wonderful places....Yes, flying the slow gadabout way here and there about the world, seeing and marvelling at its wonders, has its full measure of compensation...." You can find the full text in chapter IV of Jackie Cochran's early autobiography The Stars at Noon. Look for it in the library's Biography section. We also have the second edition, simply titled Jackie Cochran. She was one of the first women to fly supersonic back in the early 1950s and died in August 1980: 30 years ago. * Many thanks to Marie Woodruff, not only for keeping us up-to-date on the contents of our library, but for her numerous hours spent cleaning and organizing the shelves.

Last Month’s Mystery
This is the Cessna 195 (same body as the 190, with a different engine), correctly identified by: Andrew Horsburgh, Marie Woodruff, Glenn Logan, and Dan Waldie. It was Cessna's first post-WWII design and based on the 1930s tube and fabric Airmaster, but taking advantage of new developments such as constant speed propeller, steel spring landing gear, semi-monocoque metal construction and control yoke instead of joy stick. Top speed 180 mph on a 300 hp Jacobs radial engine.

I am
addicted to aerobatics. I performed my first loop-the-loop when I was 17. Now, I am nearly 23 and have been hooked on getting “G” ever since. For those uninitiated, “G” is short for g-forces, and a loop usually requires 4 of these. The freedom of 3D space is the best feeling in the world – in an airplane I am comfortable at any attitude – and at any airspeed/G loading below the redline! Hammerheads are one my favourite manoeuvres. You fly straight up. At nearly zero airspeed you hit full left rudder and slice the nose through the horizon to a straight downline. From the ground it appears you’ve completely stopped at the top of the upline and rotated on a dime – seemingly defying gravity. The manoeuvre is popular in airshows. The slipstream ripping past the rudder allows you to turn 180 degrees very quickly – even though you’re at near zero airspeed. It looks awesome.
suing dive, and even if you don’t tear the wings off, you still may fly into the ground. The correct solution is to roll right side up. I found myself in this situation once, and made the wrong decision. And I had already had a couple hours of aerobatic training. I managed to keep everything below the redline but it was close. I’ve now done more aerobatic training and I know I’ll simply roll right side up should I ever find myself upside down but level again.
Figure 2: Smoke on! Diving after a competition spin in 2008. If you find yourself in love with aerobatics there is an entire community ready to welcome you. You can grow and expand into competition or even become an airshow performer. In fact, most airshow performers acquire their skills through aerobatic competition. I absolutely love competition and plan to compete at the world level. The Red Bull Air Race is also an option, but may require more dedication than I am prepared for. For example, the competition spin is one of my favourite manoeuvres. In competition we don’t
Figure 1: Myself in VFC's now-sold Citabria GJTM in 2006. Everyone should go for an aerobatic ride. Recreational aerobatics can be a lot fun and is definitely effective safety training. What would happen if you inadvertently find yourself in a 737’s wing vortex? You could find yourself upside down but level. What’s your first instinct? I guarantee you; your first instinct is to pull on the control column. Wrong move! You’ll hit massive G and airspeed as you pull out of the en-

joke around. Safety first. But you have to know your machine. In our spins we want to see a precise number of turns (usually 1, 1¼, 1½, 1¾, 2). We also want to see a perfect downline after the spin. Yes, we want to see you dive straight toward the ground – full throttle. None of this wussy pulling up right away stuff. The sensation of hitting the one turn perfectly, seamlessly going into a 90 degree downline at full throttle, and pulling out at 150mph ready to enter a half-Cubaneight is the best in the world. (editor’s note: This type of aerobatics is only done after a considerable amount of instruction, and only in an aircraft capable of this manoeuvre.)
You can fly aerobatics at the Victoria Flying Club on August 21st and September 18th! We’ve arranged for a very experienced instructor from the Canadian Flight Centre in Boundary Bay, to fly over with a brand new Citabria. We’ve already done this a few times and it has been quite successful. Email Colin Williamson at ckconsul@telus.net to book a day. They’re already near full! Fly aerobatics. Fly safe. Sam Roland samuel.roland@gmail.com 2007 Primary World Aerobatic Champion 2010 Apple Cup Primary Champion
Figure 3: My first flight in an Extra 300. Similar machines fly in the Red Bull Air Races. Recreational aerobatics will make you a safer pilot. You will feel more comfortable in the cockpit, and you will be able to get out of any situation smoothly. A lot of pilots enjoy gentle loops and rolls and choose not to go onto competition. If you are worried about getting sick or are a little worried about going upside down – relax – you can learn aerobatics at your own pace and no good instructor will push you past your limits. But who knows, maybe you’ll find yourself infatuated. Three time world aerobatic champion and Red Bull Air Race champion Kirby Chambliss had no idea what aerobatics was until his late twenties. His airline forced him to take aerobatic instruction as a form of safety training. After the training he was hooked, and now he is one of the best pilots in the world. On a personal note, if VFC had not had a Citabria in 2005 I may have never discovered competition aerobatics.

The
story of Lieutenant Robert Hampton Gray is well known amongst Canadian military aviators. In the waning days of the War in the Pacific, “Hammie” Gray, a much respected and loved Canadian naval officer flying Corsairs from the Royal Navy carrier HMS Formidable, gave his life during an attack on a Japanese destroyer in Japan’s home waters.
The Vintage Wings of Canada FG-1D Corsair, in the markings of Robert Hampton Gray, will be making special appearances at Naval festivities across Canada in 2010 in support of the Centennial of the Canadian Navy. Where possible, she will fly in the company of our other Naval aviation classic—the Fairey Swordfish. The Corsair will have the honour of bringing Hampton Gray’s Victoria Cross (VC), which is the last VC awarded to a Canadian aviator, to tour stops and airshows across the country.
