VFC Alumni On The Job
We were excited recently to receive a photo from two former VFC students and instructors. Jeff Bujas (left) and Jeff Lightheart (right) are both flying for Central Mountain Air, and had the opportunity to snap a quick photo between flights on a recent pairing where they were scheduled to fly together. These guys are great examples of the successful combination of solid training at VFC, and hard work out in the industry. Well done guys!
We are still looking for photos of our successful (and good looking!) alumni to share with prospective student pilots. If you completed any of your training, or worked as an instructor, at VFC and you are presently working in the aviation industry (in a plane or on the ground) then we really want to hear from you! We couldn’t be any prouder of your achievements and we would love to share that pride with our new visitors and students!

Victoria Flying Club Welcomes Historic WWII Bomber B-25J “Maid in the Shade” The Victoria Flying Club is thrilled to host the Commemorative Air Force Airbase Arizona and their B-25J WWII Bomber, “Maid in the Shade,” from July 28 to August 3. The iconic aircraft will be on display for the public to tour through the aircraft, enjoy a flight, breath in the history, and learn about the unique roll these aircraft played in military aviation history. The B-25 Mitchell was made famous by the Doolittle Raiders on April 18, 1942. Sixteen B-25s took off from the deck of the USS Hornet and bombed Tokyo just four months after Pearl Harbour. This massive morale boost for the United States helped set the stage for the victories to come. The
B-25 served in many roles from bomber to transport. In the post-war years, it became best known for its role as a fire bomber. “We’re really excited to host the Commemorative Air Force and “Maid in the Shade,” said Victoria Flying Club president Ramona Reynolds, “It’s a great opportunity not only for our members to see an amazing historic aircraft, but we’re looking forward to welcoming the community in to see it as well.” “Maid in the Shade” will be available for public viewing from 8am to 4pm daily at the Victoria Flying Club. Cockpit tours are available for $5, or a family rate of $10. But for those looking to cross an item off their bucket
list, there are a limited number of flights available as well. The CAF was founded to acquire, restore and preserve in flying condition a complete collection of combat aircraft which were flown by all military services of the United States, and aircraft of other nations, for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations. More than just a collection of airworthy warplanes from the past, the CAF’s fleet of historic aircraft, known as the CAF Ghost Squadron, recreate, remind and reinforce the lessons from the defining moments in military aviation history. More information is available at: http:// www.azcaf.org/pages/aircraft_ bios/TB-25N_Mitchell.html
“Bombers, Burgers, Beer… and Bacon!” BBQ for Club Members, Staff, & B-25 Crew By donation with proceeds going to fuel for the B-25 Saturday, August 2, 2014 - 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

“Without disruption of air traffic, these fearless, forthright, indomitable and courageous individuals did venture into the wild blue yonder in flying machines. Furthermore, these skillful individuals did safely land said flying machines at Victoria International Airport, incurring no significant damage to self or machine, thus completing first solo flights.

The reason we started the Vancouver Island Chapter of Women in Aviation was to create a progressive and safe community where inclusivity and equality is a given; where we encourage and support mentorship; and we provide opportunities for women and girls to develop and flex their leadership muscles. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of women in all aviation and aerospace career fields and interests. We provide year-round resources to assist women in aviation and to encourage young women to consider aviation as a career. WAI also offers educational outreach programs to educators, high school and university students, aviation industry members and young people. We are starting our outreach program with the Girl Guides and Pathfinders of British Columbia so that they may attain their aviation badge as part of their Nationwide STEM Challenge. In addition, WAI promotes public understanding of the accomplishments and contributions of women in aviation.
Here’s how you can help! As a sponsor of $300 to $500 or more your organization would receive two free tickets to the event as well as inclusion on all of our advertising and promotion of the event, together with promotion at the event itself; and our undying devotion of course. If you would like to be a sponsor, or if you have an exciting auction item to add to our growing list, please contact Ramona Reynolds at reynoldsworks@shaw.ca. August 2014

July’s meeting of COPA was held on the second Tuesday of the month; the first Tuesday was July 1st, Canada Day and the day of a very big flyout to Alert Bay. Twelve planes and about 25 people descended on the little town, a neat and charming place. This was a good outing of COPA members and VFC members, private and club aircraft. Hurray! Let’s have more of those flyouts. The July meeting featured a presentation by Rob Shemilt and
Dan Waldie, lots of photos and commentary about their 2013 Canada Day flight to Nelson, a bit of a tricky place to get into! The next COPA meeting will be Tuesday, August 5 at the Catalina Grill House on the north side. Come on out for a summary of where the VAA & CYYJ in general are at. If anyone has concerns that we can’t immediately answer we’ll do our best to take them back to the VAA and get factual answers. No more rumours necessary. As always, come early for dinner at 6 PM, meeting starts at 7 PM. Let us know if you will be dining there so restaurant staff will have a heads-up. For more information, email copaflight6@gmail.com - anyone interested in cool aviation talk is welcome to attend.
