Liam’s First Solo – Thursday January 7th, 2010 He’s too young to drive a car, but old enough to fly a plane around the circuit as pilot in command for the first time.

Hi Christie, Things are going well here in Ottawa. I have been flying pretty regularly out of CYRO Rockliffe with the Rockliffe Flying Club, although my past 3 flights have all been cancelled due to weather or maintenance. I went skating on the Rideau Canal last night, my first time on skates in 40 years. The flying out here is quite good although I miss the mountains. The challenges of the weather here are very different. RFC lost 3 airplanes (and 18 others parked at the airport) to a tornado in April. The good news is that the insurance companies seem to have turned to very quickly and most aircraft were replaced or repaired within a few months. I must tell you, it's a little disturbing to open a journey log and find the previous entries are: destroyed by tornado followed by an extensive repair list and then 1 test flight...and you're next!! My walkaround was pretty thorough I can tell you. Thanks for taking on the Patrician, it makes my day when I see it in my e-mail. Cheers, Chris Peschke

Three days after his 14th birthday, Liam Aloni made his first solo. The day was cold, not too windy and runway 27 was in use. CYYJ was very busy that day - lots going on, lots to look out for, but Liam was checked out and ready to go, a very cool pilot as he waited his turn for take-off. The circuit was uneventful as far as the flying went, the landing was great, followed by a gentle roll-out and the new pilot taxied off on Sierra after waiting for a Q-400 to go past on its way to 27. It was huge event for Liam’s Mom and Dad (who taped the flight), family friend Kathleen and Sue and myself, the two pilots in the cheering squad. It will be three more years until Liam can get his PPL, but he has now taken the first step towards his life-long dream of being a pilot. Happy flying and Blue Skies, Liam; we are all so proud of you! Eleanor Eastick

Editor’s Note: You guys seriously need to watch that video. Jaw-dropping flying skills. Thanks Don!

Thanks Eleanor, for sending that along. Congratulations and Happy Birthday to Liam!

Valentine’s Day is not for everyone, I admit.

Many of you might

scoff at the obligatory roses and chocolates. But I believe that inside the heart of every pilot, there lives a romantic soul, one whose dreams far exceed the bonds of earth. The Patrician is for those who love aviation, whose hearts soar farthest above the earth. Publishing The Patrician is an absolute privilege for me, and a true labour of love. I am inspired by so many of you, who challenge yourselves to learn more, who achieve lifelong dreams, and who succeed in the ambitious aviation industry. For all those who pursue the love of flying, for those who appreciate the romance of taking to the skies, I dedicate this issue of The Patrician. To all my very favourite aviators, and to one in particular, I wish you a

Happy Valentine’s Day.

High Flight Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds, - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . . Up, up the long, delirious burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or ever eagle flew — And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

KINCARDINE A B C GATHERING AERO

BIKES

CARS

By: Colin Williamson and Kim Schliper

On New Year’s Eve we were at a party where we played a game called “High and Low”. Each of us had to stand up and tell everyone else what was our low point and our high point of 2009. For both my wife, Kim, and me it was the same – the low was my father passing away in June at home in Midland, Ontario and the high was our 10,000-km motorbike ride from Victoria to Ontario (and back!) in July and August.

Aside

from wanting to spend time with our family back east, we also wanted to do something special to mark the 30th anniversary of our first date way back in 1979 when we went to see Bob Marley at Maple Leaf Gardens. We share many great loves – each other, flying, motorbike touring, and this big beautiful country of ours. I am also a bit of a car-nut, owning a pair of Mustangs including a 1966 convertible. So when my brother, Paul, who lives in Kincardine, Ontario, phoned and suggested we visit the Kincardine ABC Show – ABC meaning Airplanes, [motor]Bikes and Cars – plans started to fall into place. Rather than do the usual WestJet trip to Ontario, why not take the Goldwing?

Colin and Kim on the Goldwing

Why

not, indeed! The unseasonably cold temperatures across the country (8°C in Canmore, Alberta; 11°C in Marathon, Ontario) and the 2,000 kms of torrential rain across Manitoba and Northern Ontario could be why not, but ride we did – and Kim still seems to like me! Despite the weather, we had a wonderful trip with much visiting of family along the way. The ride was truly awesome. Canada is amazingly beautiful…and huge, vast, enormous – words cannot describe it.

WWW.FLYVFC.COM 5

Just prior to the August long weekend we rode the Goldwing from Toronto to Kincardine on the shore of Lake Huron. The bike got a thorough cleaning and polishing to get it ready for the ABC Show. We even decorated it with a BC flag flying from the antenna.

hopped off, stashed our riding gear in Goldwing’s trunks, and sauntered off to enjoy the show.

Late in the afternoon before the show, we went to Kincardine Municipal Airport in Paul’s truck to meet Kim’s brother, Eric, who arrived in his 1947 Stinson 108. The airport has two paved runways: 05-23 at 2083’ long, which is too short for large aircraft, and 13 -31 at 4085’. The wind was blowing strongly out of the south-west making 23 the desired runway. Eric’s Stinson barely used ¼ of 23! Some other aircraft were also arriving for the show, and the larger ones were forced to land on 31 despite a serious crosswind from the left. We watched a B25 Mitchell crabbing into the wind and touch down still in the crab – not the smoothest landing. We later learned it was the pilot’s first crosswind landing in a B25. Not bad all things considered!

Spitfire on take off

Straight away I had to go check out the Spitfire, a Mark 9 that had seen action post D-Day in a Canadian squadron. It sports a then-unofficial small Canadian roundel with the maple leaf painted in the middle. Curiously, there is a very grumpy looking Mickey Mouse painted on the Spit’s cowling. I asked the aircraft’s owner about it, but he only smiled in response. Rumour had it that he’d won a lawsuit against Disney – and that’s why Mickey looks so unhappy. It seems Disney provided the funding for the Spitfire, a Messerschmitt 109, a Hawker Hurricane, and a couple of other less esoteric planes, as well as the funding to operate them… hmmm, I’d sure like to know how to organize that kind of a deal! I volunteered to fly the Spitfire. The owner just laughed and suggested I get in line with “a hundred other guys”!

For a small-town show in only its second year, the

B25J Mitchell on take off

The

Sunday of the show the weather improved remarkably. Still a bit breezy, but beautiful clear blue skies and temperatures in the mid-twenties. We arrived at the show just before noon on the Goldwing. A volunteer at the entrance smiled broadly and somehow wordlessly communicated as we rolled in, “You putting that in the show?” I nodded. Turned out we were the entrants from furthest away! The volunteer directed me onto the airfield where a couple of dozen other bikes were parked between the B25 and a Canso, right near a gorgeous Spitfire. We

ABC Show attracts an astonishing number of people and an amazing range of stuff. As well as the Spit, there was a B25 Mitchell, a Canso flying boat, a few Harvards, a Cornell and a Chipmunk, a Fokker Triplane and a Sopwith 1½ Strutter, and an assortment of vintage Cessnas, Pipers and of course Eric’s Stinson. There were also some modern home-builts and a glider. The motorbikes ranged from vintage Harleys through modern and custom ones, Hondas and BMWs both old and new, sport-bikes, touring bikes, and even a vintage snowmobile.

FEBRUARY 2010 6

The cars ranged from 1930s-era Model A Fords

We will certainly be going back to this show, and I

through the 40s, 50s and 60s, both domestics and imports. Some were lovingly restored back to original condition, others creatively modified into striking hotrods. There was also an excellent collection of model airplanes that put on a superb aerobatics show complete with white “smoke” trailing behind.

highly recommend that if you are in Ontario on the August long weekend that you take yourself there. Perhaps a club fly-out destination?

The ABC Show has a remarkably easy-going and friendly feel to it. Blake Evans is a super friendly guy who is a key organizer of the show. He’s the sort of fellow who is quite capable of talking the leg off a donkey. Needless to say he was the MC of the show and ran the trivia quiz, handing out aviation videos to whomever could get to centre-stage first. (Jeopardy quiz: what is Castle Bromwich?) Blake also arranged a friendly discussion on stage between two former foes of World War II: an ex-Spitfire pilot and an exMesserschmitt pilot. It was very touching to hear these two former enemies now chatting amiably with each other, simply being two pilots who share a common love of flying.

The highlight of the ABC Show, for those devoted (demented?) enough to stay until the very bitter end, was hearing and watching all those vintage planes take off, one by one, each one saluting us with a low-andover then disappearing into the wild blue yonder, the wonderful sounds of their engines fading away like the last notes of a symphony.
