FEBRUARY 2011

On Friday January 21st, a crowd of over 100 Victoria Flying Club pilots, family members, and friends gathered at the Wardroom to celebrate the achievements of 2010. The annual Wings Banquet is a long-standing tradition, which recognizes the incredible achievement of completing a Private Pilot’s Licence, thereby earning the right to proudly wear the wings that signify entry into the elite portion of the population who can call themselves pilots. It was an evening of great food, good conversation, and celebration. A large number of Private Pilots were awarded their wings. Certificates for Recreational Pilot Permits, Commercial Pilot Licences, and Instructor Ratings were also presented , along with several flight training awards. Thanks to all who attended and helped make this a memorable evening!

Last Month’s Mystery

This is the Pilatus PC-6. Made by the same Swiss company that makes the familiar PC-12 turbo-exec, it has phenominal STOL capabilities. The huge door opening and turbine engine makes it a favourite with free-fall clubs. This one was on ferry to Europe with a large fuel tank in the cabin.

Thanks once again to Tim Martin for finding this pretty little aircraft for us. And thanks for the bang-on guesses: Colin Waldie, Daryl Thanks for your time Chris, and for chatting with us about life in the North, and Williamson, your work atDan Buffalo Airways. Williams, Marie Woodruff, We wish you all the best in the coming year, and we look forward to following your career on Ice Pilots! Bill Davidson, Martin Pepper, Kurt and Eric Alisch, and Shawn Carlow.

“Without disruption of air traffic, these fearless, forthright, indomitable and courageous individuals did venture into the wild blue yonder in flying machines. Furthermore, these skilful individuals did safely land said flying machines at Victoria International Airport, incurring no significant damage to self or machine, thus completing first solo flights.

This month’s winning photo from Colin Williamson: “I thought I’d try a slight variant on the theme for ‘photo of the month.’ This is my 6 year old grand daughter, Marie, after her first flight—that grin says it all! She was the ‘co-pilot’ in PFW this past summer. She now wants to be a pilot when she grows up!”

As people come and go at VFC, it’s always nice to keep up with old friends, colleagues, and flying buddies. Eleanor Eastick submitted this update on two former VFC pilots and instructors: Cameron Law, and Tracy Biddle. Both Cam and Tracy trained at VFC and were popular instructors in the early 90s. Cam also taught aerobatics, and it was said that IDS was never on the ground during that time! Before taking her instructor’s rating, Tracy won the 1993 Webster Trophy, and as her prize from Air Canada, she and Cam made a round the world tour, taking four weeks off from their duties at the Club. It was a great loss to VFC when they left in 1995, ATPL in hand, to begin their careers as airline pilots. Tracy departed for Pickle Lake while Cam headed for Sioux Lookout. Both were very quickly

taken on by Air Nova (now Jazz) and based in Halifax where Cam, after flying the Dash-8, transferred to the BAE 146 in order to get jet time. Tracy continued as Dash-8 captain. Both were still in Halifax when the 911 crisis took place and the runways and taxiways were crammed with aircraft ordered out of the sky. Several years later, Cam made a company change and began flying for WestJet while Tracy moved into the RJ for Jazz and both transferred their base to Calgary. Came became a 737 captain and in 2010, Tracy also joined WestJet as a first officer. What a success story! Cam and Tracy had the opportunity to fly together recently (photo below). The last time they flew together was in HDP in February 1995.

On a windy day, let’s go flying. There may be no trees to rest on, There may be no clouds to ride, But we’ll have our wings And the wind will be with us. That’s enough for me. That’s enough for me.
